Abstract:Rendering and interacting with high-resolution geographical data sets and complex models have become integral parts in a 3D GIS, in particular, in a web-based 3D GIS. Due to large data sets and narrow network bandwidth, general-purpose GIS can no longer visualize and manipulate these spatial data over networks in real time. This paper explores a way for building a Web-based 3D GIS application. The application aims to visualize and analyze large spatial data sets. We propose a novel 3D data model for representing the features of the terrain surface and 3D objects. A server-client architecture including progressive transmission methods and multiresolution representations are presented to help create the application. Together with a spatial index, the application provides an effective way for powerful access and manipulation of large-scale data sets. Finally, an experiment is performed using the geo-data to verify that the application works appropriately.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly present a web-based 3D global terrain visualization application that provides more powerful transmission and visualization of global multiresolution data sets across networks. A client/server architecture is put forward. The paper also reports various relevant research work, such as efficient data compression methods to reduce the physical size of these data sets and accelerate network delivery, streaming transmission for progressively downloading data, and real-time multiresolution terrain surface visualization with a high visual quality by M-band wavelet transforms and a hierarchical triangulation technique. Finally, an experiment is performed using different levels of detailed data to verify that the system works appropriately.

Abstract:Global terrain visualization is a very challenging subject. Adopted a client/server architecture for complex, dynamic and distributed 3D scenes, based on hypertext transfer protocol and oriented object methods, a virtual scene for the earth which merges satellite and aerial imagery with DEM data using the Earth itself as an interface is built. Database organization functions in the server, data transfer and real-time display mechanisms are discussed in this paper; then pyramid data structure and wallet analysis principles are introduced to simplified data. How to construct high efficient indexes and algorithms of operating 3D landscape on the browser are also discussed. Finally an experiment is performed using different levels of detail data.

Abstract:In hazard management, earthquake researchers have utilized GIS to ease the process of managing disasters. Researchers use WebGIS to assess hazards and seismic risk. Although they can provide a visual analysis platform based on GIS technology, they lack a general description in the extensibility of WebGIS for processing dynamic data, especially real-time data. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for real-time 3D visual earthquake information publishing model based on WebGIS and digital globe to improve the ability of processing real-time data in systems based on WebGIS. On the basis of the model, we implement a real-time 3D earthquake information publishing system—EqMap3D. The system can not only publish real-time earthquake information but also display these data and their background geoscience information in a 3D scene. It provides a powerful tool for display, analysis, and decision-making for researchers and administrators. It also facilitates better communication between researchers engaged in geosciences and the interested public.

Abstract:The rapid advances in information technologies, e.g., network, graphics processing, and virtual world, have provided challenges and opportunities for new capabilities in information systems, Internet applications, and virtual geographic environments, especially geographic visualization and collaboration. In order to achieve meaningful geographic capabilities, we need to explore and understand how these technologies can be used to construct virtual geographic environments to help to engage geographic research. The generation of three-dimensional (3D) terrain plays an important part in geographical visualization, computer simulation, and virtual geographic environment applications. The paper introduces concepts and technologies of virtual worlds and virtual geographic environments, explores integration of realistic terrain and other geographic objects and phenomena of natural geographic environment based on SL/OpenSim virtual world technologies. Realistic 3D terrain visualization is a foundation of construction of a mirror world or a sand box model of the earth landscape and geographic environment. The capabilities of interaction and collaboration on geographic information are discussed as well. Further virtual geographic applications can be developed based on the foundation work of realistic terrain visualization in virtual environments.

Abstract:Multi-Dimensional WebGIS based 3D interactive network virtual community is a Virtual Real-time 3D network communication systems and Web systems development platform, fitted in running on a variety of web browsers, achieved based on web geographic information system technology and web virtual reality technology. Multi-source Multi-dimensional geographical data fusion of the WebGIS, Scene combination with 3D avatar, massive data network scheduling, and multi-user avatar real-time interactive were researched. System was divided into the data preprocessing, background management, front interaction to achieve. Core of the front interaction module was packaged in the multi-dimensional map expression engine 3GWebMapper and the free plug-in network 3D rendering engine WebFlashVR.

Abstract:The development of Web-based global 3D visual system has made progresses. However, there exist few mature and effective ways for managing, transmitting and visualizing massive spatial data. Based on the related work, the paper illustrates the ellipsoidal quadtree technique for rapid access multi-scale and multiple level geographical data, integrates the streaming with level-of-detail rendering method for transmitting the data on the network, and implements large-scale terrain surface simplification using M-band wavelet transforms and multiresolution triangulations. We fulfil a web-based global terrain visual system using COM components on the basis of the above techniques. The system has a good prospect in the military simulation and city plans.

Abstract:The effective representation of thematic data in 3D GIS can not only visualize tabular data intuitively in 3D environment, but also enable users to analyze thematic data directly on 3D GIS platform, thereby facilitating the decision making process. This paper proposes a method for representing thematic data in 3D GIS. Three steps are included in the method. In the first step, user is required to input some thematic representation parameters, all of which are then automatically converted into a XML fragment. In the second step, the API of the 3D GIS platform is employed to build graphic symbols according to the representation parameters and the thematic data. In the last step, we create legend and annotations to accurately interpret the meanings of the graphic symbols to user. This method has also been implemented as a module in a 3D GIS project named Digital Chongming Island, and the census data of Chongming Island are effectively represented in 3D environment.

Abstract:With the analysis of the already existed theories of 3D terrain visualization, it is argued that how to use Digital Elevation Model to construct 3D terrain models on Internet, in the light of Level of Detail technology in this paper. Finally an application system is developed to real-time display and operates the terrain on Internet. Terrain visualization is a technology that studies the display, simplification and simulation of Digital Terrain Model or Digital Elevation Model , so DEMs is one of the most important components that consist of 3D terrain visualization. It is the carrier of all kind of information and also the basic framework of 3D virtual earth.3D terrain visualization models are constructed on the base on DEM data in this paper. At current time, with the rapid development of computer software and hardware technology, network technology, multi-media technology and virtual reality technology and with the appearance of the theories of mathematic morphology, fractal subject and wavelet transformation, 3D visualization has made greater progress. Abstract:Construction of 3D geological visualization system has attracted much more concern in GIS, computer modeling, simulation and visualization fields. It not only can effectively help geological interpretation and analysis work, but also can it can help leveling up geosciences professional education. In this paper, an applet-based method was introduced for developing a web-based 3D geological information visualization system. The main aims of this paper are to explore a rapid and low-cost development method for constructing a web-based 3D geological system. First, the borehole data stored in Excel spreadsheets was extracted and then stored in SQLSERVER database of a web server. Second, the JDBC data access component was utilized for providing the capability of access the database. Third, the user interface was implemented with applet component embedded in JSP page and the 3D viewing and querying functions were implemented with PickCanvas of Java3D. Last, the borehole data acquired from geological survey were used for test the system, and the test results has shown that related methods of this paper have a certain application values.

Abstract:It takes complex coding work to develop a remote sensing applications which needs to display various remote sensing data. To solve this problem, we propose a remote sensing information display platform of web-browser pattern. A 3D remote sensing browser is designed to parse kinds of information and display them in a 3D scene. The remote sensing information is organized as a page file according to a format we define in this paper. Finally, through a use case, we illustrate the convenience of developing remote sensing application on our platform.

Abstract:This paper presents a Web-based three-dimensional Geographic Information System (3DGIS) for Wenchuan earthquake disaster assessment. With the help of information technology resources, geoscientists are in a position to learn more about the structure of the earthquake in efficient ways. Due to huge spatial datasets of Wenchuan, China and narrow network bandwidth, general-purpose applications are difficult to transmit and visualize these datasets on the network. The application aims to interactively represent and transfer large spatial objects of Wenchuan County, China, as well as for dynamically rendering them in networking environments. Level-of-detail (LOD) terrain models and vector maps are created, and the server–client architecture is presented. The application provides an effective way for powerful access and manipulation of large-scale Wenchuan datasets.

Abstract:At present,lots of solutions to 3D GIS networks using the maturing Web3D technology have already been designed with the rapid development of the WebGIS technology.And the technical superiority of AJAX should be adopted in order to avoid the plug-in download problem.Proposed in this paper,ASP.NET AJAX and Web3D are combined and tried.First the meaning of the AJAX technology is outlined,and then the more detailed principle or mechanism of ASP.NET AJAX is introduced.The feasibility study and experiment of Web3D are carried out using the partial page refresh function of this technology,and a preliminary solution is provided.Compared with other methods,it can be seen that this way has some practical significance in WebGIS applications.

Abstract:In this paper, an approach is presented for terrain visualization on the Internet, in which the NURBS method is used for surface fitting conforming to the X3D standard. On the basis of centripetal and cross-sectional models, the DEM can be transformed to an X3D model for Internet transmission. The approach is able to compress data but increase display resolution which can be viewed as the fundamental step of Web3D modeling and transmission.

Abstract:There is a tendency toward the creation of thematic maps on the web in the ongoing development of cartographic technology. However, automatically creating maps through the web and creating interactive web maps are two challenges associated with this field. To solve these problems, a web thematic cartography method based on a web service chain is presented here. Automated cartography is performed through knowledge-based web cartographic services, and interacting with the services is possible. The method is implemented in the construction of a urban thematic atlas in Shenzhen, China that is dedicated to supporting decision making for urban planning and public participatory thematic map making on the web.
