Abstract:Fenjiashan Reservoir is a large (Ⅱ) reservoir located on a sediment-laden river. The sediment deposition of the reservoir has been controlled successfully by the method of sediment flushing with density current. The blending process of the density current and the forming process of the turbid water reservoir are observed through building the reservoir before dam, and the vertical distribution of sediment before the dam is obtained in the experiment.

Abstract:The Lancang reservoirs play an essential role in the national economy and life, and the study of reservoir siltation is of great significance to ensure its sustainable service for the nation and people. In this paper, reservoir sedimentation is quantified in stages by empirical models and theoretical methods using reservoir information and sediment data to reveal the latest status of siltation in Lancang reservoirs. Results show that the storage capacity loss of Manwan and Jinghong reservoirs has reached 51.4% and 1.54% until 2019, which illustrates that the situation of siltation is serious. The theoretical trapping efficiency of Manwan reservoir was about 69% and the estimation result of Brune method performed best with a value of 67.5% among the empirical methods. Brune method was then modified with a correction coefficient and the revised Brune method can be used for the estimation of trapping efficiency in other reservoirs. Overall, this paper can present relatively accurate information for managers to understand the current state of siltation in Lancang reservoirs, and provide scientific guidance and data support for them to take measures to reduce sedimentation and ensure the sustainability of reservoirs.

Abstract:Sediment management is always most challenging in the hydraulic engineering on sediment‐laden rivers. Chinese people have accumulated abundant experiences in solving the problems like watershed erosion, heavily sediment‐laden rivers, reservoir sedimentation, estuarine and coastal sedimentation, and debris flows and control strategies. This paper summarizes the sediment issues, research approaches and management strategies. The paper outlines a vision for the future sediment research in the new century, especially reporting on an ambitious plan of validation of sediment studies performed for the Three Gorges Project. The need for multidisciplinary approaches to conducting research is also discussed.

Abstract:Aiming at merit and demerit of sediment discharge and cleaning measures of reservoir at present,through model tests,the self-absorb pipe sediment discharge system and siphon pipe draining sediment system were simuated.Pipe sediment discharge system can fully use the effective water head of reservoir and discharged sediment through pipe.The effect of two sediment discharge systems were checked.Tests showed that two kinds of pipe sediment discharge systems had higher efficient,less water consumption and higher adaptability and operability.It provided another idea for discharge sediment measures and test support for application of pipe discharge sediment system into reservoir.

Abstract:Diversion into the urban river networks can quickly improve the water quality, but it brings the problem of sediment deposition at the same time.Urban river networks possess not only numerous channels but also hydraulic structures such as sluices, which makes the research on water flow and sediment transport more complex.In order to deposit more sediment in the river reaches which are easy to be dredged, optimization measures of sluice scheduling are thus necessary.This paper established a 1D mathematical model of sediment transport considering sluices for river networks in the first place.Then, the model was verified by the measured data of water flow and sediment.The amount of sediment deposition and its distribution in west Hangzhou river network were calculated under each operating condition of the sluices with different diversion discharges by the model.Optimal scheduling of the sluices that had the lowest deposition ratio and the most conducive dredging work was further proposed as a result of the analysis on calculation data, respectively.The results this paper presents can provide a useful reference and guidance for sediment dredging of urban river networks.

Abstract:The Xiaobeiganliu and lower Wei River (LWR) have undergone severe sedimentation since the operation of Sanmenxia reservoir. The base-level of the channel reaches at Tongguan rose obviously and the incoming water discharge and sediment load varied significantly as a result of nature factors and human-induced disturbance. The fluvial processes of theXiaobeiganliu and LWR were complexly affected by the combined effects of the variation of water discharge and sediment load as well as the channel bed elevation at Tongguan. It's assumed that channel reaches in their potential equilibrium state, compared to the initial boundaries, have a deposition body with a triangular longitudinal shape determined by the variation of Tongguan elevation Delta Z, initial channel bed slope J(0) and the potential equilibrium slope J(e). Based on the delayed response model and an equation developed for calculating the volume of triangular deposition body, a method for simulating the erosion and deposition processes of the river reaches was proposed. The accumulated deposition processes of the river reaches during 1960 and 2011 were well simulated using the proposed method. The results also showed that the method takes into account the effects of both Tongguan elevation and the water and sediment conditions.

Abstract:Large- bottom area reservoir is the reservoir with a broad surface and serious transverse sedimentation.Conventional sediment ejection is costly,however,only local sediment can be cleared.So the efficient and energy saving sediment ejection for large-bottom area reservoir needs to be solved urgently.Through the model test,this paper concludes that sediment concentration in pipe is related to not only the length but also the diameter.Non-depositing critical velocity and friction loss are defined by hydraulic calculation,and then annual sand discharge capacity of sediment ejection system is also calculated.Through experiments and calculations,we can see the superiority of the sediment ejection system,it provides a foundation for the sediment ejection system to be better applied to engineering practice due to the advantages of effective,water-saving and low -energy consumption.

Abstract:Sediment deposition carried by flood flow is the main cause of reservoir sedimentation. This can be reduced by an appropriate operational strategy of flood flow and sediment in the reservoir. High-precision and large-scale hydrodynamic models to predict flood propagation and sediment transport in reservoirs are extremely important for an efficient flood forecasting and real-time joint regulation of water and sediment in reservoirs. In the present study, the three-dimensional (3D) numerical semi-implicit cross-scale hydroscience integrated system model (SCHISM) was adopted to model the flood propagation and sediment transport in the approximately 280km-long reach in the Three Gorges Reservoir. This model is mainly focused on analysing the asynchronous movement characteristics of flood propagation and sediment transport and the operational strategy of sediment peak regulation. The flood event in July 2013 was reproduced by the numerical model, which was validated by a comparison with the measured data. The results indicated that the numerical model has the ability to accurately simulate the flood propagation and sediment transport processes. The time that the sediment peak lags behind the flow discharge peak increases as the flood waves propagate downstream, reaching 8.1 days at the dam site. During the rising period of the flood, the discharged flow is lowered to reduce the flood peak, and when the sediment peak reaches the dam, the discharged flow is increased to release high concentration sediment during the flood recession period so as to reduce sedimentation in the reservoir. The model results agreed well with the measured results. The 3D numerical model can be used for the real-time prediction of the arrival time of the flow discharge and sediment peaks for the joint regulation of water and sediment in the Three Gorges Reservoir.

Abstract:Reviews of reservoir sedimentation management including management approaches,reservoir sedimentation study,reservoir desilting strategies and reservoir sedimentation management evaluations are made in this paper.For management approaches,the design life management approach and the life cycle management approach are reviewed and compared.For reservoir sedimentation study,the existing research results of operation rules,sedimentation control and calculation models are reviewed,and the disadvantages of calculation models are pointed out.For reservoir sedimentation desilting strategies,the retention and reduction of sediment inflow,sediment release through desilting facilities,sediment desilting using mechanical equipments and effective utilization of sediment removed out of reservoir are reviewed.For management evaluation,the technique feasibility evaluation,economic evaluation and social-environmental evaluation are reviewed.Based on the reviews above,the development trend of reservoir sedimentation management is proposed.

Abstract:Hydraulic and sediment deposition problems in water intake system of a pumping house were studied by a physical model. The experimental results of different working conditions indicate that the sediment depositions at the gates, stilling basin and culverts are very few when the system is normally operated, but in the forebay of pumping house, especially in the pumping house for living water, the amount of sediment deposition sometimes is considerably large. At the front of the entry of pumping house for living water, installing a set of oblique pipes can prevent the coarse grains to enter the house, the deposition amount will obviously decrease.

Abstract:According to channel head works with dam which in front of dam of diversion engineering with Tailan River,the paper carried out the physical model test to study the influence of the system operation and management sediment ejection on sediment deposition in front of the Dam,respectively simulated the one year with one and many year met.The experimental results shown that the water power station sediment ejection was for 0.1087 million tons each year by water diversion condition,and sediment ejection was 0.3367 million tons each year by scouring of reservoir emptying.According to the channel lncoming sediment,2 ~ 3 times of emptying scour each year can meet a year storage reservoir.Sediment ejection flow rate choose 70~110m3/s is more reasonable.The paper analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of sediment ejection by diversion and reservoir emptying,provided another sand discharge thinking and test support for reservoir and channel head works.

Abstract:Sediment accumulation has been the most important factor influencing the comprehensive benefit of reservoirs. A quantitative investigation of the sediment trapping efficiencies of reservoirs is a key to understanding the impact of sedimentation on reservoirs. Generally, the simplest method to assess sediment accumulation ratio is adopting sediment concentration curve with trap efficiency (TE) of the reservoir. Many empirical and semi-empirical models have been proposed to determine this term related to the average annual inflow, features and characteristics of the reservoir watershed area. In this article four different empirical models decided by capacity to inflow ratio (C/I), capacity to watershed ratio (C/W) were used. These different models were summarized and utilized to determine TE of large reservoirs on the Upper Yangtze River for recent decades. Based on these conventional models, an improved model to estimate sediment trapping efficiency is proposed, and experimental data from other 18 reservoirs come from different basins were used to validate the model. The results indicate that the sediment trapping efficiencies that were estimated by the four empirical model were similar to the measured efficiencies for reservoirs on the Upper Yangtze River. Among the the Brune and Siyam empirical models were the most reliable and can be applied to estimate sediment trapping efficiency for reservoirs on the Upper Yangtze River. The improved model takes the capacity/annual inflow ratio and capacity/watershed area ratio into account comprehensively, the effect of particle size and settling velocity of the sediment are also considered, it is more applicable and accuracy to predict large reservoir sediment trapping efficiency. The results of this study provide a valuable reference for predicting large reservoir sedimentation and sediment regulation.
Numerical modeling of coarse sediment dredging for deposition reduction in Three Gorges reservoir

Abstract:Coarse sediment dredging(CSD) at a fixed basin is an applicable measure of reservoir desiltation.This paper presents a study of CSD process and its effects to reduce deposition in the Three Gorge reservoir by applying a model of unsteady flow and sediment transport.Calculations reveal that by clearing away the coarse sediment from a dredging basin of 10 km long located at the reservoir's backwater end,the volume of deposits accumulated during 100 years will be reduced from 17×109 to 14×109m3.A detailed analysis shows that the dredged backwater reach could collect and hold up most of the inflow coarse sediment and the desiltation effect of dredging extends from the dredging location to the whole reservoir through an adjustment process of riverbed slope,flow velocity,sediment transport capacity and deposition distribution.Thus,CSD at a fixed basin is a reliable method of high efficiency in reducing reservoir deposition.

Abstract:Reviewing on the operation mode of reservoirs from flood detention and sediment flushing to storing clear and discharging muddy water,the cognition process of reservoir as non-sustainable use to sustainable use is demonstrated.The reservoir names Xiluodu is taken as a case study to explain that although sedimentation could be controlled to certain extent by means of adopting the mode of storing clear and discharging muddy water,the effective capacity would still not be adequately preserved for long term use.In this case, sedimentation regulation could be optimized to a considerable degree to reduce the sediment deposition.Computational results show that much more capacity can be preserved by the present mode,if lower flood control level(FCL) could be used.In addition to this,plenty runoff of the Yangtze river guaranties the refilling of the reservoir after the floods.By slight change of the present design and management,the effective capacity of Xiluodu for the future could be preserved to a much more extent to achieve the reservoir sustainability of the project.

Abstract:Reservoir sedimentation is an unsolved problem. In this paper, based on measured data, theoretical analysis and numerical computations, we prove that a proportion of the sediment coarser than 0.1 mm (CS) is sorted and deposited in specific reaches in the upper backwaters or in run-of-river reservoirs. The ratio of CS is usually small but it impacts the slope of deposition delta greatly and raises the backwater in later stages for a river shaped reservoir (RSR). Based on these facts, we propose to remove such CS from a fixed basin (FB) in the upper backwater by dredging and we prove that the removal of CS is effective in reducing sediment deposition and in preserving the long-term capacity of reservoirs. A numerical model computation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP) reservoir indicates that dredging 30×10 6 –50×10 6 t/a of CS could reduce 20% total deposition by the end of 100th year, so that the slope of deposition can be slowed down by 25%–30%. This would be remarkable for a long extended RSR. This method of removing CS can also be applied to the Xiaolangdi reservoir (XLD) on the Yellow River (YR) to not only limit reservoir deposition but also filter out the CS from entering the Lower Yellow River (LYR) to slow down the rise of the perched LYR. It provides a new alternative to postpone the continuous siltation of the LYR.

Abstract:In view of the sediment deposition problem in Kezier Reservoir,the application of the combined technology of diversion dike and sediment desilting channel in the sediment desilting of the reservoir is studied here through physical model tests.Under general flow,by using the combined technology,the main sediment scouring channel could be faster formed,through which the upstream sediment could be desilted effectively.So this combined technology is feasible in the sediment desilting of reservoir,at the same time,it could be used with other sediment desilting measures to recover reservoir storage faster.This combined technology could also provide another new idea for the sediment desilting of the reservoir in water and economy restriction.

Abstract:Siltation of drainage pipelines is a major disaster-causing factor in urban flooding. Owing to critical bed shear stress and the possibility of settlement at the bottom of pipes, there are significant nonlinear differences in the hydraulic transport and retardation response characteristics of siltation particles under different initial flow velocities, siltation degrees, and siltation lengths. Studies on siltation in drainage pipelines lack a comprehensive understanding of the intricate coupling dynamics between siltation particles and water flow, and the regularity governing the siltation transport behaviour under varying water flow conditions remains unclear. To solve these problems, this study constructs computational fluid dynamics and discrete element (CFD-DEM) coupling method and adaptive penalty model for pipeline deposition based on probabilistic settlement function, adaptive genetic algorithm, and bidirectional long short-term memory neural network (PSF-AGA-BLSTM). A three-dimensional transient hydraulic model of pipeline siltation was adopted to clarify the critical bed shear stress of the silt particles, after which an adaptive genetic algorithm with a probability settlement function as fitness was constructed to generate a numerous silt particle sample sets with settlement result labels. Adaptive genetic algorithms were combined with bidirectional long short-term memory neural networks to establish a spatiotemporal adaptive penalisation mechanism for pipeline silt particle transport. The simulation model based on PSF-AGA-BLSTM and CFD-DEM was analysed using simulation and scale tests and was found to have strong robustness and reliability. The results showed that the effects of siltation degree, flow rate, and siltation length on the transport of silt particles were all non-negligible; when the siltation degree exceeded 0.2, the siltation degree had a more significant effect on particle transport than siltation length and flow rate. The transport of silt particles occurred in two phases, rapid growth and steady growth under erosion by water flow. The rate of change in silt length accounted for up to 45% of the reason for silt nudging and silt spreading. The study clarified the hydraulic transport law of silt particles and analyzed the effect of different influencing factors. These efforts provide technical support for subsequent pipe cleaning and maintenance as well as flood prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:In order to determine the main deposition area of sediment in middle and lower reaches of Liaohe and water and sediment source areas of controlling it, the annual series of data of hydrological stations is based and applies sediment budget to research temporal and spatial distribution of sediment. Using statistical methods to research the correlation between sedimentation of the main deposition area and water and sediment from different sediment district. Studies have shown that Juliu-he to Liujian-fang is a strong deposition district. Changes of sediment yield area-Liuhe play a major role in controlling changes of sedimentation in lower reaches of Liaohe. For alleviating the problem of deposition, the governance of soil erosion should be strengthened in Liuhe basin.
