Abstract:Kinetic study on the complexation of gallic acid with ferrous sulfate was performed using UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. Under the experimental conditions, the stoichiometric composition of the formed complex is 1:1. The complexation reaction was found to be a second-order one. The influences of temperature, ionic strength and solvents on the complexation reaction were investigated. According to the Arrhenius equation, the apparent activation energy of the complexation reaction was evaluated to be 71.64kJ×mol−1. A three-step reaction mechanism was proposed, which can well explain the kinetic results obtained.

Abstract:Acetalization and ketalization of various aldehydes and ketones with glycerol by using FeCl3 as catalyst were studied. Effects of reaction time, mole ratio of reactants and amount of catalyst on the yield of acetals (ketals) were investigated. Results showed that FeCl3 was an efficient catalyst for the acetalization and ketalization. The optimal reaction conditions were found as follows: molar ratio of aldehydes and ketones to glycerol = 1 : 1.2, 1 wt% catalyst, reaction time 2 h. Under these conditions, conversion and the selectivity were above 90% and 95%, respectively.

Abstract:Al-Ferron timed spectrophotometry assay is a basic method in the study on the formation of polynuclear hydroxyl aluminum species and their transformation laws in aqueous systems. In actual working process, this methodology has some dogmatism and arbitrariness in the time limits demarcation of the three kinds of aluminum fractions (Al(a), Al(b) and Al(c)) in polynuclear aluminum solutions, which makes this kind of classification rougher, and the experimental results non-reproducible. The reason for this difference is that the specific species within Al(a), Al(b) and Al(c) have different reaction mechanism and dynamics, and that specific species of Al(b) having different OH/Al ratios have different reaction rates with ferron. In this paper, the ExpAssoc distribution was applied to quantitatively fit the Al-Ferron reaction dynamics curve, and the extrapolation method was used to survey the 1 min measured value [Al(a)] of monomeric Al, which is hard to obtain in manual manipulation. The time demarcation between Al(b) and Al(c) should reach the point of the experimental data curve up to horizontal platform. The microwave-radiated technology was used to fast assay the total aluminum concentration [Al(T)]. With these methods, the contents of monomeric Al(a), polynuclear Al(b) and gel Al(c) can be conveniently and quantitatively measured. It offers a novel method for surmounting the arbitrariness in the measurement of the three kinds of aluminum fractions and the repetitive calculation of Al(a) and Al(b).

Abstract:The oxidation of the tetrakisoxalatouranate(IV) ion by the hexacyanoferrate(III) ion was studied in an oxalate buffer medium. The reaction was first order in both UIV(C2O4)44– and Fe(CN)63–, and a second order rate constant of k2av = (5.46 ± 0.04) × 10–2 M−1 s−1 at 34.9 °C was obtained. The reaction is inversely proportional to [H+] and a pKa of 5.99 was found for the deprotonation of UIV(C2O4)3(H2O)22−. Activation parameters have been obtained by application of the Eyring equation. Minimum excess concentrations of UIV(C2O4)44– over Fe(CN)63– for the kinetic study under pseudo-order conditions were evaluated following literature guidelines and also compared to results from a direct second order treatment of data. Contradictory to general beliefs, a fivefold excess of UIV(C2O4)44– was found to be sufficient for a pseudo-order kinetic treatment. The need to obtain results from traditional approximation methods, for example utilizing the linearized Eyring equation to obtain activation enthalpies (∆H#) and entropies (∆S#), was demonstrated not to be required anymore as modern computational capabilities utilizing least square fitting programs allows ∆H# and ∆S# to be obtained directly from temperature and rate constant data utilising the exponential Eyring equation easily and more accurately. A reaction mechanism for the reaction is proposed.
The Kinetics and Mechanism of the Oxidation of Phenylthioacetic Acid and Thiodiglycolic Acid by Potassium Ferrate

Abstract:The kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of phenylthioacetic acid and thiodiglycolic acid by potassium ferrate were investigated under pseudo and non pseudo first-order conditions. Phenylthioacetic acid was oxidized to the sulfone and Fe(II) within 300s and thiodiglycolic acid was oxidized to the sulfoxide and Fe(III) within 1000s. Above a pH value of 8.7 for phenylthioacetic acid and 8.3 for thiodiglycolic acid the kinetics were firstorder in the concentration of the hydrogen ions, the organosulfur compound and the ferrate ions, whereas below these pH values the kinetics were independent of the hydrogen ion concentration. A possible mechanism involves reaction between protonated ferrate and the organosulfur compound as the rate-determining step with a rate constant of 35 M-1s-1. These results are comparable with other similar compounds.

Abstract:The UV-visible spectroscopic study of the interaction between rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 and different aluminoxanes, such as isobutylaluminoxane (BAO) and ethyl(isobutyl)aluminoxane (EBAO), was conducted under normal polymerization conditions. UV-visible absorption spectra of rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2/aluminoxanes were correlated with the formation of ionic zirconium species. The influence of different aluminoxanes on the tightness of the metallocenium-aluminoxane ionic pairs was interpreted in terms of the aluminoxane structure. The loose ionic pairs formed in the EBAO system causes a fast decaying kinetic profile, advantageous for copolymerization.

Abstract:Oxalic acid in an aqueous solution was extracted by tri-octylamine (TOA) in n-octanol as well as in the mixture of n-octanol and kerosene. Infrared spectroscopic analysis was performed to study the stoichiometry of complex formation. A model for the extraction equilibrium was presented and subsequently used to correlate the experimental data. The distribution coefficient increases with TOA concentration, S0. The TOA loading increases sharply at lower aqueous phase concentration of oxalic acid, and approaches 1.0 at higher aqueous phase concentration of oxalic acid. The effect of diluent, kerosene, on the extraction of oxalic acid depends on S0. Kerosene apparently affects the extraction behavior at lower S0. The infrared spectroscopic analysis result shows that (1,2) complex between oxalic acid and amine was formed in this experimental system. The apparent chemical association constants, K11 and K12, were obtained by fitting the experimental data of extraction equilibrium, where K11 was much larger than K12.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation is carried out to investigate the structures, (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts of aqueous Al-F complexes and their water-exchange reactions. The following investigations are performed in this paper: (1) the microscopic properties of typical aqueous Al-F complexes are obtained at the level of B3LYP/6-311+G**. Al-OH(2) bond lengths increase with F(-) replacing inner-sphere H(2)O progressively, indicating labilizing effect of F(-) ligand. The Al-OH(2) distance trans to fluoride is longer than other Al-OH(2) distance, accounting for trans effect of F(-) ligand. (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts are calculated using GIAO method at the HF/6-311+G** level relative to F(H(2)O)(6)(-) and Al(H(2)O)(6)(3+) references, respectively. The results are consistent with available experimental values; (2) the dissociative (D) activated mechanism is observed by modeling water-exchange reaction for [Al(H(2)O)(6-i)F(i)]((3-i)+) (i = 1-4). The activation energy barriers are found to decrease with increasing F(-) substitution, which is in line with experimental rate constants (k(ex)). The log k(ex) of AlF(3)(H(2)O)(3)(0) and AlF(4)(H(2)O)(2)(-) are predicted by three ways. The results indicate that the correlation between log k(ex) and Al-O bond length as well as the given transmission coefficient allows experimental rate constants to be predicted, whereas the correlation between log k(ex) and activation free energy is poor; (3) the environmental significance of this work is elucidated by the extension toward three fields, that is, polyaluminum system, monomer Al-organic system and other metal ions system with high charge-to-radius ratio.

Abstract:Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for ferrate(VI) oxidation of phenol have been measured in isotopic solvents, H2O and D2O, using ambient and high-pressure stopped-flow UV−visible spectroscopy. An increase (fast stage) and then a decrease (slow stage) in absorbance at 400 nm are observed when potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) and aqueous phenol solutions are mixed rapidly. This suggests that small amounts of unstable intermediate 4,4‘-biphenoquinone are produced during this redox process. An electron paramagnetic resonance signal for the reaction mixture of ferrate and phenol trapped by spin-trap α-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone indicates a radical reaction pathway. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric measurements show p-benzoquinone is a major organic product, and the red ferric thiocyanate complex formed from addition of potassium thiocyanate to the spent reaction solution indicates that Fe(VI) is reduced to Fe(III). Abstract:The reaction between thiourea (TU) and tetrakis(2,2’-bipyridine)-μ-oxodiiron (III) complex ([Fe2(bpy)4O]) hereafter referred to as Fe2O has been studied in aqueous acidic media at hydrogen ion concentration ([H]) of 0.001 moldm, constant ionic strength of 0.3 moldm(NaCl), T= 27 ±1°C and atwave length of maximum absorption (λmax) of 520 nm. The stoichiometry of reaction shows that one mole of oxidant is consumed per mole of reductant. The reaction is first order with respect to oxidant and reductant respectively and is not hydrogen ion and ionic strength dependent. The reaction conforms to the rate law: −d dt [Fe2O 4+] = k2[Fe2O ][TU]. Added SO  2

Abstract:A kinetic study on the reactions of the OH radical and ozone with acetylacetone (AcAc) has been performed in a 1080 L quartz glass reaction chamber using in situ FTIR spectroscopy analysis. Temperature dependent rate coefficients for the reaction of AcAc with the OH radical were determined over the temperature range 285-310 K using the relative kinetic method. The following Arrhenius expression was derived: k = 3.35 x 10(-12) exp((983 +/- 130)/T) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1), where the indicated error is the two least-squares deviation. A rate coefficient (in units of cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1)) of (1.03 +/- 0.31) x 10(-18) has been obtained at (298 +/- 3) K for the reaction of ozone with AcAc. A product investigation on the gas-phase reaction of OH radical with AcAc was conducted in a 405 L borosilicate glass chamber using in situ FTIR spectroscopy to monitor reactants and products. Methylglyoxal, acetic acid, peroxy acetic nitrate (PAN) were positively identified as products with molar yields of (20.8 +/- 4.5)%, (16.9 +/- 3.4)%, and (2.0 +/- 0.5)%, respectively. From the residual infrared spectrum the main products are attributed to 2,3,4-pentantrione (CH3-CO-CO-CO-CH3) and its hydrated analogue pentan-2,3-dione-4-diol (CH3-CO-CO-C(OH)2-CH3). Based on the observed products, a simplified mechanism for the reaction of the OH radical with AcAc is proposed.

Abstract:Seven acetylacetonate (acac) metal complexes ranging from early transition metals to post-transition metals were examined by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl sulfoxide, and dimethylformamide. The electronic potential of any observed redox events is reported along with an analysis of the reversibility of those events across a range of scan rates. Group 8 compounds Fe(acac)3 Ru(acac)3 showed at least quasi-reversible reductions across all solvents while Ru(acac)3 also featured a reversible oxidation. The early and post-transition compounds VO(acac)2, Ga(acac)3 and In(acac)3 exhibited irreversible reductions, while TiO(acac)2 showed no redox activity within the examined potential ranges. Mn(acac)3 featured an oxidation that showed solvent-dependent reversibility, and a reduction that was irreversible in all examined solvents. DFT calculations indicated minimal solvent effects on the HOMO-LUMO gap for the majority of compounds, but a significant effect was observed for Ru(acac)3. This study serves as a valuable initial step for further examination of acetylacetonate metal complexes for applications as electrochemical internal standards, nanoparticle precursors, and electrocatalysts.

Modified ferron assay for speciation characterization of hydrolyzed AI(III): A precise k value based judgment

Abstract:The speciation of Al-OH complexes in terms of Al-a, Al-b and Al-c could be achieved by traditional ferron assay and Al-b is generally considered as Al-13, however, the inherent correlation between them remains an enigma. This paper presents a modified ferron assay to get precise determination of Al-13 using nonlinear least squares analysis, and to clarify the correlation between Alb and Al-13. Two parallel reactions conforming to pseudo-first-order kinetics can simulate the complicate reactions between polynuclear complexes and ferron successfully. Four types of experimental kinetic constant (k value) of Al-OH complexes can be observed by this method when investigating three typical aluminium solutions. Comparing with the results of Al-27 NMR, the species with moderate kinetics around 0.001 s(-1) can be confirmed to resemble to Al-13 polycation. The other types of kinetics are also well-regulated in partially neutralized aluminium solutions with various OH/Al ratios (b values) in the range 0 similar to 2.5. It would provide potential means to trace the in-situ formation of Al-13 in dilute solutions such as coagulation with Al-based coagulants
Study on the interaction of chromate with bovine serum albumin by spectroscopic method

Abstract:The interaction between two chromates [sodium chromate (Na2CrO4) and potassium chromate K2CrO4)] and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in physiological buffer (pH 7.4) was investigated by the fluorescence quenching technique. The results of fluorescence titration revealed that two chromates could strongly quench the intrinsic fluorescence of BSA through a static quenching procedure. The apparent binding constants K and number of binding sites n of chromate with BSA were obtained by the fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters enthalpy change (ΔH), entropy change (ΔS) were negative, indicating that the interaction of two chromates with BSA was driven mainly by van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds. The process of binding was a spontaneous process in which Gibbs free energy change was negative. The distance r between donor (BSA) and acceptor (chromate) was calculated based on Forster's non-radiative energy transfer theory. The results of UV-Vis absorption, synchronous fluorescence, three-dimensional fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectra showed that two chromates induced conformational changes of BSA.
Studies on the Kinetics of Thermal Oxidation of Rosin and Abietic Acid on the Polyethylene Film

Abstract:The kinetics of thermal oxidation of rosin and abietic acid absorbed on the polyethylene film were respectively studied.The kinetic equation of heat oxidation was determined by UV spectrophotometry.The experimental results show that the thermal oxidation reaction of both rosin and abietic acid are pseudo first order reaction.When the reaction temperatures were 303.15,308.15,313.15,318.15,323.15 and 328.15 K,respectively,the apparent reaction rate constants of abietic acid were 0.0036,0.0041,0.0062,0.0087,0.011 and 0.0157 min-1,respectively.Its reaction activation energy was 50.29 kJ/mol.when the reaction temperatures were 308.15,313.15 and 318.15 K,respectively,the apparent reaction rate constants of rosin were 0.0009,0.0015 and 0.0025 min-1.The reaction activation energy was 80.2 kJ/mol.

Studies on Iron-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation of Benzylic Alcohols to Carboxylic Acids

Abstract:A comprehensive study on aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols to carboxylic acids with a catalytic amount each of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, TEMPO, and KCl is conducted. Various synthetically useful functional groups are well tolerated in the reaction. Distinct electronic and steric effects are observed in the reaction: electron-withdrawing groups accelerate the reaction while electron-donating groups make the reaction slower, and ortho-substituted substrates react slower than meta-substituted substrates. Several large-scale reactions (100 mmol) are conducted using a slow air flow of 30 mL/min to demonstrate the practicality of this method in an academic laboratory.

Abstract:The structures and water-exchange reactions of aqueous aluminum-oxalate complexes are investigated using density functional theory. The present work includes (1) The structures of Al(C2O4)(H2O)(4)(+) and Al(C2O4)(2)(H2O)(2)(-) were optimized at the level of B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p). The geometries obtained suggest that the Al-OH2 bond lengths trans to C2O42- ligand in Al(C2O4)(H2O)(4+) are much longer than the Al-OH2 bond lengths cis to C2O42-. For Al(C2O4)(2)(H2O)(2)(-), the close energies between cis and trans isomers imply the coexistence in aqueous solution. The Al-27 NMR and C-13 NMR chemical shifts computed with the consideration of sufficient solvent effect using HP GIAO method and 6-311+G(d,p) basis set are in agreement with the experimental values available, indicating the appropriateness of the applied models; (2) The water exchange reactions of Al(III)-oxalate complexes were simulated at the same computational level. The results show that water exchange proceeds via dissociative pathway and the activation energy barriers are sensitive to the solvent effect The energy barriers obtained indicate that the coordinated H2O cis to C2O42- in Al(C2O4)(H2O)(4)(+) is more labile than trans H2O. The water exchange rate constants (k(ex)) of trans- and cis-Al(C2O4)(2)(H2O)(2)(-) were estimated by four Methods and their respective characteristics were explored; (3) The significance of the study on the aqueous aluminum oxalate complexes to environmental chemistry is discussed. The influences of ubiquitous organic ligands in environment on aluminum chemistry behavior can be elucidated by extending this study to a series of Al(III)-organic system.

Similarly, for adipic acid: k(T, H2A) (7 [(-1210 1701()/T], k(1'' HA) = (9.5 0.3) x 10 10/Tx e-'41][.(5-0.20.02) (010xe P2010I(){T],k('T, A2-) (8.7 0.2) X 1010 x e,q,[(-1100 170K)(unitsm in of L 1-1 s-). Density functional theory(DFT) calculations were performed to calculate the energy barrier of the H atom abstraction. The calculation results show that the energy barriers thatatthe Cp-atoms of the two DCAs are much lower than those at the Ca-atoms, indicatingthe H atom abstractions predominantly occur at the Cfi-atoms. The increased.0H rate constant in the case of the deprotonated form can be explained by the reduction of energy barrier, which is predominately caused by the variation of the inductive effect of the carboxyl group. As an important sink in the atmosphere, the degradation of glutaric acid and adipic acid by -OH under atmospheric conditions can be accurately described by the.irrlienius expressions obtained.
