Abstract:Abstract The water hazard is one of the major accidents in coal mines. The existing geophysical exploration methods do not meet the precise requirements for exploration accuracy. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is currently the only geophysical method that can directly detect groundwater. This paper firstly introduces the basic principles and working methods of surface-to-underground NMR, and then gave the NMR response of the uniform earth excited by a circular loop source, at last, the NMR responses of some aquifers at different depths were simulated by the numerical modeling. The response for the observation underground is higher than that on the surface, which shows that the surface-to-underground NMR can increase the detection depth.

Abstract:The quadrupole resonance (QR) technology can be used as a confirming sensor for buried plastic landmine detection by detecting the explosives within the mine. We focus herein on the detection of TNT mines via the QR sensor. Since the frequency of the QR signal is located within the AM radio frequency band, the QR signal can be corrupted by strong radio frequency interferences (RFIs). Hence to detect the very weak QR signal, RFI mitigation is essential. Reference antennas, which receive RFIs only, can be used together with the main antenna, which receives both the QR signal and the RFIs, for RFI mitigation. The RFIs are usually colored both spatially and temporally, and hence exploiting only the spatial diversity of the antenna array may not give the best performance. We exploit herein both the spatial and temporal correlations of the RFIs to improve the TNT detection performance.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) is a novel geophysical method to detect groundwater directly. By applying this method to underground projects in mines and tunnels, warning information can be provided on water bodies that are hidden in front prior to excavation and thus reduce the risk of casualties and accidents. However, unlike its application to ground surfaces, the application of MRS to underground environments is constrained by the narrow space, quite weak MRS signal, and complex electromagnetic interferences with high intensities in mines. Focusing on the special requirements of underground MRS (UMRS) detection, this study proposes the use of an antenna with different turn numbers, which employs a separated transmitter and receiver. We designed a stationary coil with stable performance parameters and with a side length of 2 m, a matching circuit based on a Q-switch and a multi-stage broad/narrowband mixed filter that can cancel out most electromagnetic noise. In addition, noises in the pass-band are further eliminated by adopting statistical criteria and harmonic modeling and stacking, all of which together allow weak UMRS signals to be reliably detected. Finally, we conducted a field case study of the UMRS measurement in the Wujiagou Mine in Shanxi Province, China, with known water bodies. Our results show that the method proposed in this study can be used to obtain UMRS signals in narrow mine environments, and the inverted hydrological information generally agrees with the actual situation. Thus, we conclude that the UMRS method proposed in this study can be used for predicting hazardous water bodies at a distance of 7-9 m in front of the wall for underground mining projects.

Discussion on the Application Prospect of the Transient Electromagnetic Method Based on the Dual Launcher and Mine Advanced Detection

Abstract:The dual transmitter implements the equivalent anti-magnetic flux transient electromagnetic method, which can effectively reduce the scope of the transient electromagnetic detection blind area. However, this method is rarely reported in the detection of pipelines in urban geophysical exploration and the application of coal mines. Based on this, this paper realizes the equivalent anti-magnetic flux transient electromagnetic method based on the dual launcher. The suppression effect of this method on the blind area is analyzed by physical simulation. And the detection experiment of underground pipelines is carried out outdoors. The results show that the dual launcher can significantly reduce the turn-off time, thereby effectively reducing the impact of the blind area on the detection results, and the pipeline detection results verify the device’s effectiveness. Finally, based on the ground experimental results, the application prospect of mine advanced detection is discussed. Compared with other detection fields, the formation of blind areas is mainly caused by the equipment. If the dual launcher can be used to reduce the blind area, the accuracy of advanced detection can be improved more effectively. The above research results are of great significance for improving the detection accuracy of the underground transient electromagnetic method.

Abstract:Knowledge of the existing roadway condition is vital to transportation government agencies for management and safety purposes. Verifying the presence and extent of subsurface defects/voids is vital to prevent failures and accidents from occurring. A nondestructive and noninvasive geophysical method, ground penetrating radar (GPR), which utilizes electromagnetic waves, was employed in this study. Four field projects are presented in this study to demonstrate the application of electromagnetic waves for detection of voids and anomalies. Auguring and excavation were used to verify the suspicious areas that were located by the electromagnetic waves. Voids and different subsurface features, like rebar, geo-grid, and geo-textile, were successfully detected. A large negative peak that appears in the wave form is an indication of a dry void. Void sizes, ranging from a few centimeters to several meters, were successfully detected. Early identification of concealed subsurface voids under the roadway structure can prevent major failures from occurring. The methodologies presented in this study are applicable to many other projects.

Abstract:This paper presents the conceptual stages of the simulation and development of a modified transceiver antenna for a high-power pulsed nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) detector of explosives containing the 14N isotope. At a frequency of 4.645 MHz, better characteristics are obtained using a nine-turn coil shaped as half of a Fermat spiral with an outer radius of 75 mm. Using a COMSOL Multiphysics numerical parametric simulation and a materials browser, it was possible to calculate a physical system with parameters as close to reality as possible. According to the results of the experimental studies of the radio frequency (RF) energy, the proposed antenna features an increase in the working area compared to a similar antenna, the topology of the conductive coil of which has the form of an Archimedean spiral. The resulting diagrams of the distribution of the magnetic induction also indicate that the topology of the electromagnetic (EM) field does not depend on the orientation of the sample under study relative to the axis of the radial symmetry observed in square–rectangular planar antennas.

First, we consider exploiting the spatial correlation of the RFIs only and propose a maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for parameter estimation and a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector for TNT detection. Second, we adopt a multichannel autoregressive model to take into account the temporal correlation of the RFIs and devise a detector based on the model. Third, we take advantage of the temporal correlation by using a two-dimensional robust Capon beamformer (RCB) with the ML estimator for improved RFI mitigation. Finally, we combine the merits of all of the three aforementioned approaches for TNT detection. The effectiveness of the combined method is demonstrated using the experimental data collected by Quantum Magnetics, Inc.

Abstract:A quantitative method of determination of rock properties from cuttings by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technology is presented, for which the rock relaxation could be achieved by using the feasibility of fluid in pore. Differences between Nuclear Magnetic Resonance cuttings analysis and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance core analysis are studied. The method to determine the rock properties such as porosity. permeability, etc, from cuttings by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technology is also presented. The on-.site application of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of cuttings is carried out in Qinghai, Jilin and Jidong Oilfield, suggesting that the NMR technology on cuttings and conventional core analysis matches well.

Abstract:Surface Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SNMR), a new geophysical method,can be used to detect groundwater directly,and which is currently the only way to find groundwater directly in the geophysical area.With the widely using of SNMR,the traditional model with loops as transceiver has been unable to meet certain specific requirements, while in the model of the finite grounding wire as the excitation source,we can receive SNMR signals in multi-channel, with high productivity, theoretically speaking,getting more accurate one-dimensional to three-dimensional information of underground aquifers. In this paper, we will calculate the magnetic field of finite grounding wires, and carry out numerical simulation for the underground aquifers SNMR responses excitated by line source obtaining that this method is feasible.

Abstract:Nuclear technology applications have been very important research fields in Tsinghua University (THU) for more than 50 years. This paper describes two major directions and related projects running in THU concerning nuclear technology applications for radiation imaging and nuclear technology applications for astrophysics. Radiation imaging is a significant application of nuclear technology for all kinds of real world needs including security inspections, anti-smuggling operations, and medicine. The current improved imaging systems give much higher quality radiation images. THU has produced accelerating tubes for both industrial and medical accelerators with energy levels ranging from 2.5∼20Mev. Detectors have been produced for medical and industrial imaging as well as for high energy physics experiments such as the MRPC with fast time and position resolutions. DR and CT systems for radiation imaging systems have been continuously improved with new system designs and improved algorithms for image reconstruction and processing. Two important new key initiatives are the dual-energy radiography and dual-energy CT systems. Dual-energy CT imaging improves material discrimination by providing both the electron density and the atomic number distribution of scanned objects. Finally, this paper also introduces recent developments related to the hard X-ray modulation telescope (HXMT) provided by THU.

Abstract:Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) offers an unequivocal method of detecting and identifying explosives. Unfortunately, the inherent signalto-noise of the most Ammonium Nitrate (AN) is very low, For the purpose of detecting weak NQR echo train from signal which is corrupted by RF interference (RFI) and noise, a NQR signal processing method based on multi-stage wiener filter (MSWF) is presented. MSWF, implementing the wiener filter using a nested chain of scalar wiener filters, is a reduced-rank algorithm. Compared with the standard method of solving Wiener filter, MSWF does not need matrix inversion, effectively reduces the computational complexity. In this work, we employ ammonium nitrate (AN) with different weight as the experimental samples; treat the echo train as reference channel in the condition of no sample, and other conditions as observed channel. Processing steps are as follows, applying MSWF to eliminate noise and RFI by utilizing the correlation between reference channel and observed channel, accumulating a certain times and then using the fast Fourier transformation to transform the signal to frequency domain, clear spectrum peak is achieved at the resonance frequency of AN. The results indicate that the method eliminates RFI and noise efficiently, obtains stable detection ability, reduces the computational complexity effectively, and makes the real-time NQR signal detection to be possible.
Research on High-precision Detection Technology for Un-derground Space Information Data

Abstract:The quality of underground space information data has become a major problem endangering the safety of underground space. After research and analysis, we found that the current high accuracy information data remote detection methods are limited to the detection of overground spaces objects, and are not applicable to the detection of various information data in underground space. In this paper, we analyze the spectral properties of the fractional-order differential (FDO) operator, and establish mathematical model of remote transmission and high-precision detection of information data, which realizes the functions of high-precision and remote detection of information data. By fusing the information data to detect the mathematical model in a long distance and with high accuracy, A mathematical model has been established to improve the quality of underground spatial information data. Through the application in engineering practice, the effectiveness of this method in underground space information data detection is verified.

Abstract:In the past two years, dramatic changes have taken place in the field of quantum information. Both theoretical and experimental research continues as more and more resources from national governments and military funding are provided in this direction. Various quantum computing systems have shown their potential as a practical quantum computer. Among them, superconducting and ion trap systems have led this competition. Compared with those thriving quantum systems, a nuclear magnetic resonance system has some other advantages, such as accurate control techniques and a long coherence time. In such a system, we could manipulate a 12-qubit quantum system and implement a complicated 12-qubit operation. In this article, we focus on the interesting works in our group, not only representing newly-developed techniques, but also pointing towards a thriving research area. The review mainly includes three parts: 1) how to implement a more accurate control manipulation by a new technique called MQFC; 2) how to simulate other quantum systems by quantum simulation; and 3) the introduction of a new cloud-based quantum computing system—NMRCloudQ.

Abstract:The estimation of water content in water-bearing structure of coal mine tunnel directly affects the progress and quality of coal mine tunnel construction. Therefore, in order to accurately estimate the water content of water-bearing water in coal mine tunnels, this experiment innovatively applies nuclear magnetic resonance detection technology to advanced geological prediction. The research first explains the principle of water detection of nuclear magnetic resonance technology, and then optimizes and improves it to be more suitable for water detection in coal mine tunnels. In addition, in order to realize the numerical simulation of water exploration in coal mine tunnels, particle swarm optimization and wavelet transform are also applied to the inversion of nuclear magnetic resonance data. The emission energy and the sensitivity of the received signal of the optimized nuclear magnetic resonance water detection technology are improved, and the noise of the overall model is also reduced. Finally, the laboratory test of nuclear magnetic resonance water detection in coal mine tunnel was carried out. The experimental results show that the water volume value obtained from the NMR response is basically consistent with the water volume value in the actual water-holding construction; Compared with the set water content (0, 0.167, 0.333, 0.5, 0.667), the water content in the water-holding construction of the coal mine tunnel measured by nuclear magnetic resonance detection under five working conditions is basically consistent, which verifies the reliability of the technology.

Abstract:In view of the increasingly high degree of mechanization of coal mining and the increasing difficulty of mining, seismic exploration based on ground seismic method is not applicable in coal seams. Therefore, a trough wave seismic detection method of geophysical prospecting method is introduced into coal mine tunneling roadway, which provides a method and means for ascertaining the geological anomalies in front of the tunnel face. Combined with modern geological information, seismic data can be visualized and interpreted by geological personnel, which can identify geological anomalies such as faults, collapse columns, goafs and water inrush areas in the process of coal seam excavation and mining, and reduce the occurrence of disasters and accidents in the mining process.

Abstract:The nonferrous metal mines in China are rapidly depleting due to years of mining, and it has become difficult to identify new mineral resources in the periphery of the old mining area. In order to deal with this situation, advanced technologies and equipment must be deployed. The borehole transient electromagnetic method (TEM) has become a key technology due to its deep investigative capabilities within conductive geological structures. In the present study, in order to meet the exploration needs at depths of less than 3000 m, surface-borehole TEM exploration was used to analyze the characteristics of electromagnetic signals generated by a long wire source and a large loop source, providing essential data for the development of key technologies, such as sensor parameter design and signal gain optimization of the TEM system in the borehole. This study discussed in detail two key technical problems as follows: firstly, the efficient synchronization mechanism between the ground transmitter system and the borehole electromagnetic signal acquisition system ensured the accuracy and timeliness of data acquisition; and secondly, the realization of mass storage technology, which effectively solved the problem of mass storage and real-time transmission of data in a deep borehole environment. The effectiveness of the surface-borehole TEM systems with a long wire source and a large loop source was verified by tests in real mines. The surface-borehole electromagnetic signal acquisition system developed in this study effectively collected electromagnetic signals in the borehole, and the results accurately reflected the stratigraphic information of mineral resources in the study area. This study can pave a new technical path for the exploration of deep and peripheral areas of non-ferrous metal mines and provide valuable experience and insights for mineral resource exploration in similarly complex geological environments.

Advantages of the Optimum Pulse Moment in Surface NMR and Application in Groundwater Exploration

Abstract:The surface nuclear magnetic resonance (SNMR) method is widely used in groundwater detection because of its sensitivity to hydrogen in water and direct water detection. However, low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) restrict the development of this technique. An optimum pulse sequence is designed according to correspondence between the pulse moment strength and its best detection depth. Because only selection of the pulse intensity distribution according to the target aquifer depth is required and the "on-resonance" pulse pattern is still employed, this pulse sequence emission can be easily achieved using existing SNMR instrumentation. Numerical simulation results and field experiments show that, compared with traditional exponential growth pulses, the optimum pulse sequence effectively improves the SNR of the SNMR method. The aquifer boundary, water content, and pore characteristics of the inversion result are thus more consistent with characteristics of underground structures. Additionally, because the optimum pulse sequence focuses most of the pulse moments in the target depth range, in situations where two aquifers are separated by a relatively narrow aquitard, it is better able to resolve the individual aquifers than the traditional pulses. Optimum pulse moments improve the SNR by enhancing the signal amplitude, compared with various filtering methods, and obtain a better detection effect. This kind of pulse sequence can be used as an alternative pulse sequence form of the SNMR method.

Abstract:The interior space of mine is narrow, and many roadways' width and height are less than 2 meters. At present, overlapping multi-turn device is mainly used in the mine transient electromagnetic method, of which the shape and area is not fixed, so it can not guarantee the correctness of the received signal. Its data processing and geological interpretation are essentially based on ground half-space transient electromagnetic method, which has many technical problems to be solved at the application level. For the limitation of the detection space and the whole space distribution of detected target in the mine transient electromagnetic method, this paper developed a kind of inductive air-core coil sensors suitable for this method. The effective area of the sensor at home and abroad meets the requirements of the mine, but the bandwidth is too narrow. And the blind spot is too long, which limits the scope of the mine transient electromagnetic detection. So it is significant to develop a kind of inductive sensor suitable for the mine transient electromagnetic detection. According to the needs of the mine transient electromagnetic detection, the basic technical indicators of the inductive air-core coil sensor are determined. By analyzing the physical structure of the air-core coil and the equivalent noise circuit of the pre-amplifier circuit, the main source of introduced noise is obtained. Constructing the equivalent model of inductive air-core coil sensor, we realize the analysis of the amplitude-frequency characteristics and low noise of the sensor, and give the regular pattern of each noise source which affects the noise level of sensor with frequency. The method of reducing the sensor noise in the mine transient electromagnetic detection is designed, with which the SNR (signal to noise ratio) of the sensor at the resonant frequency improves 15.6 dB. Test results showed that the noise performance and output characteristics of inductive air-core coil sensor surpasses 3D-1HF-coil sensor of Canada's Geonics, which meets the needs of mine transient electromagnetic detection. Inductive sensor has been used as a key component of transient electromagnetic receiving system, and its noise level determines the minimum resolution of the received signal directly, which affects the result of the detection. In the production of the air-core coil, a LCR equivalent model is established. Winding the coil hierarchically and segmentally can reduce the distributed capacitance and inductance of the coil, which thereby increases the resonant frequency and broadens the response bandwidth. Small size, wide bandwidth, large effective area and low noise inductive air core coil sensors are designed for the whole space response of limited space inside the mine. In this paper, a air-core coil sensor with mean diameter of 0.6 m, equivalent area of 30 m(2), bandwidth of 700 kHz is produced based on the study of the equivalent model, frequency characteristics, and the noise model.
