Abstract:The ever-growing requirement for resilience suggests to enable self-healing features of smart distribution system using intelligent communication and control method. Traditional service restoration methods apply the centralized algorithms to maximize the load restoration. However, such methods depend solely on a control center and would lead to single points of failure. In this paper, a consensus-based decentralized algorithm is proposed to build the service restoration framework for an outage distribution system. First, a decentralized multi-agent system (DMAS) interaction mechanism is designed. Then, a consensus-based DMAS strategy is presented for determining the critical loads restored. Furthermore, an average consensus algorithm is proposed to discover the global information in microgrids (MGs), and the Dijkstra’s algorithm is utilized to modify the MG structure. The effectiveness of proposed method is validated by numerical simulations with the modified IEEE 37 bus system. The test results show that the proposed method can realize the service restoration even though the control center is out of work and has an excellent performance on solution time.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Next-Generation WDM Network Design and Routing (WDMN). The increasing demand for bandwidth that has resulted from the emergence of various bandwidth-thirsty applications has increased the need for employing WDM as a dominant technology for the next-generation optical internet. As these networks carry gigantic amounts of information, survivability has become a primary and basic need for them. Although the available proactive protection schemes provide a 100% restoration guarantee, they require huge redundancy and usually result in a very high blocking probability. We propose a novel active restoration scheme that restores a failed primary lightpath based on multiple predefined but nonreserved backup paths along the primary path. Extensive simulation results based on three typical test networks indicate that with a small increase in restoration time, our new restoration scheme can reduce the blocking probability and the capacity requirement significantly while guaranteeing a very high restoration probability.

Abstract:A fast hierarchical subnet restoration method was developed to improve the survivability of large scale automatically switched optical networks(ASON.This restoration mechanism takes full advantage of the agility of hierarchical routing and uses the SPF routing algorithm for the hierarchical signal processing,which greatly improves the network resource utilization efficiency while simultaneously reducing the restoration time.The performance of the hierarchical subnet restoration method was analyzed based on the simulated restoration time.The results show that for connections across multiple domains,this method has a faster restoration time and the restoration time can be further reduced by reducing the subnet scale.

Abstract:In high-speed WDM optical networks, failure recovery is a critical issue as a single element failure in the network will result in the interruption of multiple services. Distributed path restoration is preferable for its high flexibility and efficient resource utilization. However, with the development and maturity of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, the resource contention problem arises when simultaneously restoring a large amount of services initiated from many uncoordinated source nodes. This will degrade network performance and result in long service recovery latency. In this paper, we present the Routing Pre-Configuration (RPC) scheme for fast and scalable path restoration in DWDM networks, where pre-failure configuration and post-failure signaling are demonstrated. We compare it with the previous contention resolution approaches and the simulation results prove its improvement in restoration blocking probability and average restoration time.

Abstract:Active restoration (AR) is a novel lightpath restoration scheme proposed recently for guaranteeing a certain degree of survivability in WDM optical networks with a reasonable tradeoff between capacity requirement and restoration time. An analytical model has been proposed to understand the restoration probability behavior of a connection request in optical networks employing AR based on the assumption that all the backup routes of the connection are independent. In a real AR-based optical network, however, the backup paths of a connection are likely correlated since they may share some common links along their routes. As the first step toward the restoration probability analysis incorporating the correlation among backup paths of a connection in AR-based networks, we propose in this paper an analytical approach to modeling the restoration probability of the connection by considering all the possible correlation between any two of its successive backup paths. Compared to the old restoration models without considering the correlation among backup paths, the proposed new model can significantly improve the accuracy in estimating the restoration probability for AR-based networks, as verified by extensive simulation results based on two typical backbone network topologies.
Fast Connection Recovery Against Region Failures with Landmark-Based Source Routing

Abstract:Communication networks are vulnerable to the natural disasters or malicious attacks, which may cause a large area of corruptions and long term disconnection of network services. Such significant outage has become a serious problem today with regard to the stringent reliability requirement of the mission critical applications. In this paper, we focus on fast and effective failure recovery in face of region failures. Rather than rely on the time consuming failure localization, we introduce and evaluate a direct restoration mechanism upon detecting the path failure, which use the geographically distributed intermediate nodes, named “landmarks”, to reestablish the connection through a (near-)shortest detour path. The experimental analysis on randomly generated and realistic network topologies have shown that this approach can achieve high reliability and low stretch in case of region failures, and thus significantly reduce the impact of region failures on network based mission critical services.

Abstract:In wavelength-routed optical networks, routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) can be implemented in a dynamic and distributed way. During the distributed restoration process after a failure occurs, the concurrent reservation attempts from different original nodes may lead to collisions because they select the same wavelength with a large possibility, resulting in high recovery blocking probabilities. This paper presents a contention avoidance mechanism to improve restoration performance. With the adaptive wavelength assignment method, reservation contentions between adjacent nodes are reduced significantly and higher recovery ratio is achieved.

Abstract:Data Center Network (DCN) is the supporting platform for various applications in cloud services. As optical switch offers high bandwidth, low latency and reduced energy consumption, it becomes a promising switching solution for scalable DCN. Recently, a new DCN architecture with distributed component sets (racks and optical core switches) in a given optical network has been proposed to simplify the DCN internal connection and make the DCN fully scalable. Because the core switches play an important role in both external service access and inter-node traffic switching, a single core switch failure may lead to traffic congestion or collapse of a DCN. Based on an existing distributed DCN, in this paper we consider how to deploy a backup core switch to fight against an arbitrary single core switch failure while minimizing the total protection cost. Upon a core switch failure, all unaffected traffics keep their original routes unchanged, and predefined protection strategy (rerouting and switching) will take effect for the affected traffics. To solve this problem, we formulate an integer linear program (ILP) to place the backup core switch at a proper node and determine the fast traffic recovery mechanism. We validate the proposed design by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel hybrid optical network system is presented. The continuing increase of data traffic keeps the pressure on the backbone telecommunication networks requiring more diverse and more intelligent allocation of capacity. Optical networking has become a key technology in accommodating the rapidly expanding Internet traffic. Hybrid nodes are now playing a key role in optical networks by facilitating efficient traffic management. New optical networks are expected to support the increasing network load by employing both sophisticated transmission (wavelength division multiplexing division (WDM)) and switching technologies (optical switches and cross-connects). This study will explain how the hybrid nodes achieve with different network models and make it operation through innovative technical designs.

Abstract:With the deployment of Software-Defined Network (SDN), traditional IP routers are being upgraded to SDN-enabled switches, enabling traffic reachability in case of a single link failure. However, ideal signal transmission model overlooks the attenuation phenomenon during the transmission process. From the perspective of the Internet Service Providers (ISP), the robustness of the upper application layer has met the stability requirement of users, the cost of network construction, like the use of multiplexers on routers, shall instead get more emphasis. Therefore, we propose an integer planning-based single-link failure recovery algorithm for Optical Signal Noise Ratio (OSNR) limited optical networks, which rationally uses resources of CDC-ROADM (Colorless Directionless Contentionless Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer) devices. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can achieve fast recovery and relatively high reachability from any single link failure at a low cost of multiplexers resources on OSNR limited optical networks.

Abstract:The recovery ratio of distributed path restoration is mainly affected by the resource reservation contentions in automatic switched optical networks (ASON). This paper presents a collision avoidance based path restoration mechanism to increase the recovery ratio. The mechanism uses a colorizing algorithm to assign adjacent nodes to different wavelength sub-sets. The adjacent nodes then can select different wavelengths with different starting search points and sequences in the wavelength sub-sets for the recovery routes. Simulations show that this mechanism significantly reduces reservation contentions and achieves a higher recovery ratio than existing first-fit or random wavelength assignment policies in cases of double-fiber failure scenarios. Moreover, the restoration brings no additional signaling cost, so it is suitable for large optical networks.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of user and operator,optical networks are in dire need of fault tolerations,especially recovery from multi-fault.A multi-fault recovery survivability mechanism for optical networks was presented.The corresponding improvement solutions for the problem in classical subgraphy routing method from three aspects was provided and analyzed respectively: the shared risk link groups(SRLG) restoration into the subgraph routing method;a routing principle into the subgraph routing method;the second fault restoration method based on the subgraph routing.Simulation results are showed from the point of view of effective utilization.

Abstract:With traffic carried by fiber access networks continuously increasing, the survivability and scalability of networks have become critical for their applicability. In this paper, a low-redundancy passive optical network (PON) architecture using a star-cross-bus topology is presented along with a scale-differentiated, centrally controlled hybrid failure localization and restoration procedure. The network can provide protections for the feeder and distribution fibers as well as the optical line terminal transceivers, where multiple failures can be restored within 2.1-8.2 mu s with local failures restored locally. Analyses show that the network is highly survivable and that its expected survivability for a 128-ONU PON with 16 failures can be 8%, 9 times, and 8 times higher than those of dual-feeder-star, ring, and dual-ring networks, respectively. In addition, the network is also scalable such that hundreds of to a thousand optical network units (ONUs) can be accessed for loss budgets of 30-40 dB.

Abstract:The challenges awaiting future data networks are not only the sine qua non issue of high bandwidth, but also failure resiliency and power consumption. This can be addressed by a cross-layer physical impairments awareness permeating the network, whose elements can then be reconfigured on the fly so as to optimize transmission capacity, energy efficiency, and recovery time. We demonstrate an impairment-aware optical networking testbed, capable of quickly recovering from a router failure using optical bypasses. Its architecture aims at validating novel network and routing algorithms designed to minimize a global cost function which will take into account all relevant constraints.

Abstract:In wavelength-routed optical networks, the recovery ratio of interrupted connections after failures is mainly affected by adjacent-node resource reservation collisions in a distributed path restoration. This paper proposes a novel collision avoidance wavelength assignment (CA-WA) mechanism to make adjacent nodes select different wavelength assignment schemes and therefore different recovery wavelengths for the recovery routes. Simulation results show that in both single- and double-fiber failure scenarios the proposed wavelength assignment mechanism significantly reduces reservation contentions and achieves a higher recovery ratio, especially when the network load is high.

Abstract:Dynamic restoration is one of the basic paradigms for providing survivability capabilities in wavelength-routed WDM networks [1]. Unlike static (or preconfigured) protection, dynamic restoration does not reserve any network resources during network design or connection establishment. Instead, the network must dynamically search for spare network resources available in the network to recover the disrupted network service after a network failure occurs. For this reason, dynamic restoration is more efficient in resource utilization but slower in service recovery than static protection. Fast provisioning of a backup path for each disrupted connection has been a great concern with dynamic restoration.

Abstract:Optical networks must promptly respond to failures and efficiently handle dynamic traffic in order to fulfill their role as a critical infrastructure. Leveraging network softwarization and virtualization, virtual software-defined networks offer sufficient flexibility towards this goal by sharing the physical infrastructure among multiple tenants whose traffic must traverse the network hypervisor. In a resilient optical control plane each switch must be assigned to a primary and backup hypervisor instance through short control paths, which challenge will be addressed in this paper. First, we propose an intelligent greedy hypervisor placement heuristic which maximizes acceptance ratio for current, and preparedness for future requests. Secondly, we introduce a graph neural network model that can be seamlessly integrated with either our integer linear program or heuristic method to yield high-quality placements in significantly less time compared to our prior solutions. This enhancement renders our approach applicable to larger networks, significantly expanding its practical utility. Finally, we propose a self-adjusting hypervisor migration strategy, which continuously adapts the placement to the dynamically changing virtual network requests, thus, ensuring service continuity by avoiding frequent control plane reconfigurations. Through simulations we show that our hypervisor placement and migration strategies provide a balanced control load while they can handle a wide variety of changes.

Abstract:This study proposes and presents a new central office (CO) for the optical metro access network (OMAN) with an affordable and distinctive switching system. The CO's foundation is built upon a novel optical multicarrier (OMC) generation technique. This technique provides numerous frequency carriers that are characterized by a high tone-to-noise ratio (TNR) of 40 dB and minimal amplitude excursions. The purpose is to accommodate multiple users at the optical network unit side in the optical metropolitan area network (OMAN). The OMC generation is achieved through a cascaded configuration involving a single phase and two Mach Zehnder modulators without incorporating optical or electrical amplifiers or filters. The proposed OMC is installed in the CO of the OMAN to support the 1.2 Tbps downlink and 600 Gbps uplink transmission, with practical bit error rate (BER) ranges from 10−3 to 10−13 for the downlink and 10−6 to 10−14 for the uplink transmission. Furthermore, in the OMAN's context, optical fiber failure is a main issue. Therefore, we have proposed a possible solution for ensuring uninterrupted communication without any disturbance in various scenarios of main optical fiber failures. This demonstrates how this novel CO can rapidly recover transmission failures through robust switching a and centralized OLT. The proposed system is intended to provide users with a reliable and affordable service while maintaining high-quality transmission rates.
