Abstract:Currently the incorporation of graphene within polymer matrices requires complicated, energy-intensive, and time-consuming sample preparation steps. We report that the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) with triglycidyl para-aminophenol (TGPAP), a liquid tertiary amine-type epoxy oligomer, results in the direct and fast phase transfer of GO from water to TGPAP via simple manual stirring under ambient conditions for a very short time. The formation of TGPAP/GO complexes by the partial charge transfer from the carboxylic acid groups of GO to the tertiary amine group of TGPAP was found to be responsible for the fast phase transfer. After the in-situ thermal reduction and curing process, few-layer nanosheets of the reduced GO (rGO) disperse very uniformly in the final epoxy/rGO composites. The mechanical properties of the epoxy/rGO composites and the multiscale reinforced composites with continuous microscale carbon fiber and rGO as the primary and secondary reinforcements, respectively, are remarkably enhanced.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), nano/micro-structured polyaniline (PANi) are some typical important functional materials, which have many applications in lithium ion battery with high energy, supercapacitor, catalysts, solar cells, nanodevices, chemical sensors, biosensors and biomedical fields. In this paper, GO was obtained by using chemical oxidation method at room temperature, and nano/micro-structured GO/PANi composite was prepared with in-situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of GO suspension. A series of characterizations were examined by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, UV-Vis, et al. The results indicated that most of the surface of GO sheets was covered with a smooth thin layer of polyaniline, and some domains of the surface of GO sheets were clearly observed polyaniline nanowires anchored. To examine the surface and interface properties of GO/PANi nanocomposite, chemical prototype sensors were constructed based on GO/PANi nanocomposite and a QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) device. The response behaviors of the sensor to some typical volatile compounds operating at room temperature were investigated. The adsorption features to some typical volatile compounds were discussed. Some key issues and modification ideas were suggested for further investigation.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene oxide/polymer composites have been rapidly developed. Among numerous fillers, graphene oxide (GO) has multiple excellent properties. Its special two-dimensional structure makes it anisotropic with multiple properties that can effectively improve the overall performance of polymers, which makes it a promising candidate for polymer modification research. GO/polymer composites have been widely investigated in many fields, and many researches have shown that modulating the amount of GO and the functional groups on its surface can achieve significant improvement of polymer properties. Therefore, from the perspective of developing new high-performance polymer composites, a multidimensional understanding of GO nanofillers and their role in polymer modification is desired. This review presents the preparation methods of GO and GO/polymer composites, selectively reviewing the latest techniques for modulating the mechanical, electrical, electrochemical, thermal, adsorption, and barrier properties of polymers by GO. Finally, the development of GO/polymer composites is summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Exfoliated graphite oxide (GO) sheets with hydroxyl groups and amine groups on the surface were prepared by modification of graphite. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator molecules were grafted onto the GO sheets by reactions of 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide with hydroxyl groups and amine groups. Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) chains on the surface of GO sheets were synthesized by in-situ ATRP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results all demonstrated that polymer chains were successfully produced. After grafting of PDMAEMA, the dispersity of GO sheets in solvents was improved significantly. Poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) particles were deposited on GO sheets via hydrogen bonding between MAA units on polymer particles and amine groups of PDMAEMA. TEM and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the structure of the nanocomposites.
Facile and Highly Efficient Fabrication of Graphene Oxide-Based Polymer Nanocomposites Through Mussel-Inspired Chemistry and Their Environmental Pollutant Removal Application

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)-based polymer nanocomposites were fabricated in aqueous solution via a novel strategy combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. These GO-based polymer nanocomposites were used as efficient absorbents for the removal of organic dyes methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution. The successful preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites (GO-PDA-PSPSH) was confirmed by a number of characterization techniques in detail. Furthermore, a series of influential factors such as contact time, initial solution pH, and temperature were investigated and optimized. The optimal adsorption time of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites toward MB was 58 min. The maximum adsorption efficiency was occurred at pH 7. On the other hand, accompanying with the elevation of temperature, removal efficiency of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was significantly increased, indicating that the adsorption process of MB by GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was endothermic. More importantly, the adsorption capability of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was obviously greater than many other GO-based nanocomposites. Taken together, we have developed a facile biomimetic strategy for the preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites, which showed excellent adsorption capability toward MB and are promising for environmental adsorption applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) based polymer nanocomposites have attracted extensive research interest recently for their outstanding physicochemical properties and potential applications. However, surface modification of GO with synthetic polymers has demonstrated to be trouble for most polymerization procedures are occurred under non-aqueous solution, which will in turn lead to the restacking of GO. In this work, a facile and efficient "one-pot" strategy has been developed for surface modification of GO with synthetic polymers through single-electron-transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). The GO based polymer nanocomposites were obtained via SET-LRP in aqueous solution using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) as the monomer and 11-bromoundecanoic acid as the initiator, which could be effectively adsorbed on GO through hydrophobic interaction. The successful preparation of GO based polymer nanocomposites was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques such as H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The resultant products exhibit high water disperisibility, excellent biocompatibility and high efficient drug loading capability, making these PEGylated GO nanocomposites promising candidates for biomedical applications. Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Nanoparticles need to be well dispersed in a polymer matrix to employ their advantages. Their agglomeration may cause defects and stress concentrations, deteriorating the final properties of polymer/graphene nanocomposite. Here graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized in several ways to improve its interaction with polyethylene and dispersion. Polyethylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA) with strong polar groups was used as the matrix to consider a high potential of enhanced interaction with the GO nanoparticles and therefore obtain a high-performance polyolefin composite. First, GO was produced by modified Hammer's method from graphite. The GO was aminated by phenylene diamine and named FGO. Also GO was reduced chemically to obtain CRGO and thermally to obtain TRGO and then the recent ones were amino functionalized, named FCRGO and FTRGO, respectively. In another route GO was first amino functionalized and then was reduced chemically and named FCRGO+. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by visual tests, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA analysis. Subsequently, the study investigates the fabrication of nanocomposites using these nanoparticles at 2 wt% in the PE-g-MA matrix by solution-casting method. The nanocomposites were characterized by optical microscopy, tensile and rheometric tests, FTIR, DSC, and SEM analysis. Based on the results, FCRGO+ was identified as the optimum nanoparticle having better dispersion, improved interfacial interaction, and stronger mechanical properties. The GO functionalized nanocomposites showed up to 36% in tensile modulus, 56% in tensile strength and 70% in elongation at break as compared to those of GO nanocomposites without functionalization of GO.

Abstract:Poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM)/graphite oxide (GO) nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ polymerization method and characterized by X-ray Diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscope (HREM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FTIR). The results show that chemical reaction can take place between polymer and graphite oxide, and the polymerization process changes the orientation of the intercalated molecules.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion-templated polystyrene (PS)/graphene oxide (GO) composite microspheres were successfully prepared using surface-functionalized silica as the stabilizer. These preformed polymer/GO composite microspheres were then melt-blended into polymer matrix to prepare nanocomposite materials in a short minute using HAAKE torque rheometer. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of the nanocomposites demonstrate that GO is uniformly dispersed into PS matrix. A significant decrease of coefficient of thermal expansion (CIE) values from more than 150 to 50 ppm/K is realized with the introduction of well-dispersed GO nanosheets. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the temperature of 5% weight loss (T-0.05) are increased by 5 and 17 degrees C, respectively. Furthermore, the impact energy of the composite sample with a GO loading of 0.86% is 64% greater than that of pure PS, and is nearly twice as high as that of the composite which was prepared by direct melt-blending of surface-modified GO and commercial PS. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites are also obviously improved. The work provides an economic and convenient method which eliminates the dispersion problem of GO in polymer matrix to prepare GO-based nanocomposite materials for industrial application on a large scale. Abstract:The development of high-performance graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites is challenged by the lack of a feasible and effective route to disperse and exfoliate GO nanosheets, as well as technical gaps in providing precision control over the interfacial interactions. Here we disclose an all-aqueous processing method to immobilize few-layer extended GO nanosheets at ramie fiber driven by hydrogen bonding. The reinforcing efficacy of GO-functionalized ramie (GOFR) was examined in a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix, wherein the GOFR provided large active surfaces to induce chain ordering and lamellar organization. It permitted the preferable formation of well-organized PLA transcrystallinity at GOFR, in contrast to calabash-like and less-ordered transcrystallinity induced by pristine ramie due to the inferior nucleation activity. The transcrystallization kinetics and lamellar orientation degree were significantly facilitated by the addition of chain mobility accelerator in PLA, permitting the formation of prevailing transcrystallinity with large sizes at GOFR The profound control of interphase morphology conferred remarkable improvements in interfacial properties with weak relation to crystallization temperature, as indicated by an over 3-fold increase in interfacial shear strength between GOFR and PLA matrix compared to the counterparts incorporated with pristine ramie. The effort reveals the appealing application of natural fibers as an ideal template to extend GO nanosheets, potentially motivating further efforts toward revolutionary advancements occurring in many fields of materials science and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Two simple and effective methods, “click” chemistry and supramolecular interactions, are demonstrated here to synthesize well-defined poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) sheets. We provide a simple method to introduce azide groups on GO sheets by the ring opening reaction of sodium azide with the epoxide groups of GO. The GO-N3 sheets can easily undergo “click” reaction with alkyne-terminated PLLA by “grafting onto” method to produce GO/PLLA composites with high grafting ratio and exfoliated structure. Interestingly, GO-N3 can be grafted with oxygen-containing polymers such as PLLA, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polyethylene oxide (PEO) via supramolecular interactions between the azide groups and these oxygen atoms on polymers, producing GO/polymer composites with low grafting ratio and intercalated structure. These “grafting onto” methods are useful to produce a variety of GO/polymer composites with different structure via “click” reaction or supramolecular interactions, which have potential applications in material science.
Chemical Modification of Graphene with a Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymer and Its Reinforcement Effect in the Polymer Matrix

Abstract:In our work, graphene oxide (GO) was covalently functionalized with propargyl alcohol to obtain alkyne terminated graphene oxide. These alkyne groups on graphene oxide sheets further reacted with a kind of azido-functionalized liquid crystalline polymer via click chemistry, which was found to be a facile and effective method to graft the liquid crystalline polymer onto GO sheets. The liquid crystalline polymer introduced here was a side-chain liquid crystalline polymer – poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS). Azido-functionalized PMPCS was prepared beforehand by atom transfer polymerization to obtain polymers with designed molecular weight. The successful introduction of functional PMPCS chains onto GO sheets was confirmed by FTIR, TEM and AFM characterizations. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to calculate the graft efficiency. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies revealed that functional PMPCS had more profound π–π stacking interactions and charge transfer effect with GO sheets after liquid crystalline phase transition. Therefore, the as-prepared GO–PMPCS composite had potential applications in improving the mechanical properties of liquid crystalline PMPCS matrix as had been investigated by rheological measurements.
Polyolefin-functionalized graphene oxide and its GO/HDPE nanocomposite with excellent mechanical properties

Abstract:To prepare GO/Polyolefin nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, electrical, or thermal properties is still a challenge due to the poor interfacial adhesion between GO and non-polar polyolefins. In this study, we report an effective strategy for the polyolefin-functionalized graphene oxide (fGO) using two-step methods GO was firstly modified by using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and styrene (St) dual monomers grafting method, thus GO-g-(GMA-co-St) with numerous epoxide groups is obtained. Then through the reaction between the epoxide group of GMA and anhydride group of maleic anhydrides (MAH) of the prepared HDPE-g-(MAH-co-St), GO-g-HDPE-g-(MAH-co-St) could be obtained. The successful preparation of the GO-g-HDPE-g-(MAH-co-St) was confirmed by AFM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, DSC, and TGA characterization. The results show the grafting ratios of the poly(GMA-co-St) and HDPE-g-(MAH-co-St) being up to 50.4wt% and 70.4wt%, respectively. The functionalized GO shows homogeneous dispersion in the nanocomposites with HDPE, and the stress at break and strain at break of the nanocomposite is increased by 28.7% and 130% respectively with only 0.2wt% fGO loading. The approach of the polyolefin-functionalized GO paves a new way to develop not only polyolefin/graphene nanocomposites but also excellent nanocomposites of polyolefin/engineering plastic blends with graphene.

Abstract:Chemically engineered polyamide 6 (PA6)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were produced via the functionalization of GO with an amide (CONH 2 ) functional group, in order to produce amide-GO with improved interfacial bonding and dispersion in the host polymer matrix. In situ polymerization of ε-caprolactam was carried out in the presence of amide-GO to create PA6/amide-GO nanocomposites. The nanomaterial (pre- and post-polymerization) and the composites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile testing. The single-layer nature of GO was attested by TEM. FTIR, XPS, XRD and thermal analysis techniques confirmed the successful amide modification of GO. The expected attachment of PA6 to the surface of GO is demonstrated, along with the reduction of GO during polymerization. Some reduction of GO during the chemical functionalization process was also observed. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites was confirmed, while promotion of α-phase crystallite formation and a molecular weight change of attached PA6 are observed. A linear improvement in stiffness and yield strength was observed as functionalized GO content increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.75 wt%. A levelling off of mechanical properties ensued once the GO content reached 1 wt%, and a decrease was seen at 2 wt%.

Abstract:Amino- and epoxy-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized separately through a wash-and-rebuild process utilizing two differently terminated silane coupling agents. The modified GO sheets were then incorporated into an epoxy resin to prepare nanocomposites. The addition of 0.2 wt% amino-functionalized GO (APTS-GO) yielded a 32% increase in Young's modulus (3.3 GPa) and 16% increase in tensile strength (81.2 MPa). Less reinforcement was observed with the epoxy-functionalized GO (GPTS-GO) but there was a more significant increase in ductility for GPTS-GO/epoxy, with the fracture toughness (critical intensity factor, KIC) and fracture energy (critical strain energy release rate, GIC) nearly doubling at 0.2 wt% loading (1.46 MPam1/2 and 0.62 kJ/m2 for KIC and GIC, respectively). Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed that the GPTS-GO was dispersed more uniformly than the APTS-GO in the epoxy matrix, and better interfacial stress transfer was found for the APTS-GO. Thus the wash-and-rebuild process affords a novel strategy for controlling the functionality of graphene in the quest to develop high-performance graphene-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Graphene (G)-based nanocomposites have received much attention in various disciplines due to their high specific surface area, good compatibility, low mass density, elegant flexibility as well as the excellent synergistic effect of G with other nanomaterials. Numerous studies have been carried out to fabricate G-based polymer composites with novel and improved properties. However, the dispersion behavior of G in a polymer matrix and the interfacial bonding between G and polymers still restrict the better performances and broader applications of the fabricated G-polymer nanocomposites. In this review, we have summarized the most recent studies on the modification of G with polymers and the subsequent synthesis and applications of high quality G-polymer nanocomposites. The strategies for surface modification of G with polymers, including various covalent and non-covalent techniques, are introduced in detail. In addition, a series of effective processing routes for producing high quality G-polymer nanocomposites, such as melt compounding, solution blending, in situ polymerization, latex mixing, and electropolymerization, are introduced and discussed. Abstract:A functional GO/AgNPs nanocomposite was obtained by in situ reduction of positively charged AgNO3 precursors which were adsorbed on the negatively charged surface of GO through electrostatic attraction. GO/AgFe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (GAMNs) were generated via an amidation reaction in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyaminopropyl) carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinnimide for the first time. The catalysis property of the nanocomposite was studied by degrade 4-nitrophenol. The characterized results proved that AgNPs and Fe3O4 have been successfully decorated on GO nanosheets. The GAMNs possess high catalytic capacity and good reusability, and exhibit great potential in environmental pollutant degradation.

Abstract:Agglomeration and restacking can reduce graphene oxide (GO) activity in a wide range of applications. Herein, GO was synthesized by a modified Hummer’s method. To minimize restacking and agglomeration, in situ chemical oxidation polymerization was carried out to embed polyaniline (PANI) chains at the edges of GO sheets, to obtain GO-PANI nanocomposite. The GO-PANI was tested for the adsorptive removal of brilliant green (BG) from an aqueous solution through batch mode studies. Infrared (FT-IR) analysis revealed the dominance of hydroxyl and carboxylic functionalities over the GO-PANI surface. Solution pH-dependent BG uptake was observed, with maximum adsorption at pH 7, and attaining equilibrium in 30 min. The adsorption of BG onto GO-PANI was fit to the Langmuir isotherm, and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (qm) of 142.8 mg/g. An endothermic adsorption process was observed. Mechanistically, π-π stacking interaction and electrostatic interaction played a critical role during BG adsorption on GO-PANI.

Abstract:The integration of graphene and nonionic water-soluble polymers has generated useful composites with high performances and rich functionalities. These attractive graphene composites are usually synthesized from the aqueous mixture of graphene oxide (GO) precursor and polymers such as synthetic polyvinyl alcohol and natural cellulose. In this widely known preparation method, the miscibility of GO and nonionic water-soluble polymers seems to be intuitive but has been disputed by some observations of gelation and aggregation. Herein, we have re-examined the miscibility of GO and nonionic water-soluble polymers and confirm their general coaggregation caused by hydrogen bonding interaction. Due to the increasing GO concentration, the property of stable miscibility is converted to aggregation by surface adsorption with transient hydrogen bond crosslinking. We have proposed a preheat mixing strategy to prepare a homogenous solution of GO and nonionic water-soluble polymers in any arbitrary ratio. The re-exploited miscibility allows the fabrication of homogeneous composite papers with renewed high performance trend. The hydrogen bonding-regulated miscibility refreshes the understanding on graphene/water-soluble polymeric composites and provides an ecofriendly interaction control method to modulate the assembly of structures and materials.
