Abstract:Diatom, due to its high sensitivity to environmental change, is one of the bio-indicators of aquatic ecosystem health, and some typical diatom species have been applied to indicate the heavy metals pollution of water body. With the focus on the surface water heavy metals pollution, this paper reviewed the research advances in the toxic effect of heavy metals pollution on diatom, biosorption and bioaccumulation of heavy metals by diatom, ecological adaptation mechanisms of diatom to heavy metals pollution, and roles of diatom as bio-indicator and in ecological restoration of heavy metals pollution. The growth tendency of diatom and the morphological change of frustule under heavy metals pollution as well as the differences in heavy metals biosorption and bioaccumulation by diatom, the ecological adaptation mechanisms of diatom on heavy metals surface complexation and ion exchange, and the roles of diatom as bio-indicator and in ecological restoration of heavy metals polluted water body were also discussed. This review could provide scientific evidences for the prevention of aquatic ecosystems heavy metals pollution and related early warning techniques.

Abstract:The effect of technogenic emissions on the input of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni into plants from the Poaceae and Asteraceae families has been studied. Soil and plant contamination by anthropogenic emissions from industrial enterprises leads the decreasing of crop quality; therefore, the monitoring investigation of plants and soils acquires special importance. The herbaceous plants may be used as bioindicators for main environmental changes. It was found that the high level of anthropogenic load related to atmospheric emissions from the power plant favors the heavy metal (HM) accumulation in herbaceous plants. Contamination with Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni was revealed in plants growing near the power plant. Heavy metals arrive to plants from the soil in the form of mobile compounds. Plant family is one of the main factors affecting the HM distribution in the above- and underground parts of plants. Plants from the Poaceae family accumulate less chemical elements in their aboveground parts than the Asteraceae plants. Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Artemisia austriaca are HM accumulators. For assessing the stability of plants under contamination with HMs, metal accumulation by plants from soil (the bioconcentration factor) and metal phytoavailability from plants above- and underground parts (the acropetal coefficient) were calculated. According to the bioconcentration factor and translocation factor values, Poaceae species are most resistant to technogenic contamination with HMs. The translocation factor highest values were found for Tanacetum vulgare; the lowest bioconcentration factor values were typical for Poa pratensis.

Abstract:Contamination of soils by lead( Pb) is of widespread occurrence because of the industrialization,urbanization,mining,and many other anthropogenic activities. It is urgent and necessary for scientists to uncover the mechanisms of uptake,translocation,accumulation and detoxification of Pb in plants for the following two reasons. First,it helps target and regulate the key process of Pb uptake by crops and vegetables and minimize the threat of Pb introduction to the food chain. Second,it helps cultivate Pb hyperaccumulating plants that can absorb and sequester excessive amounts from contaminated soils in their biomass without incurring damage to basic metabolic functions. The purpose of this review was to summarize the research advances in uptake,translocation and accumulation of Pb in plants and address the mechanisms by which plants or plant systems detoxify Pb. The further researches on the foliar uptake,the interactions between soil components and plant cell wall,as well as the integrated technologies for phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soils were prospected.
Advances in research of mechanisms of heavy metal hyperaccumulation in plants

Abstract:The mechanism of heavy metal hyperaccumulation were very complicated and involved various metabolic processes in plants.The recent studies showed that the high ability of metal ion uptaking and trafficking,compartmentalization in vacuole,cell wall or trichome,and the chelation with organic acid (such as citrate,malate and oxalate) or amino acid (histidine) were involved in the metal accumulation and tolerance mechanism in hyperaccumulation.In addition,several metal cation transmembrane transporter genes were cloned and characterized in hyperaccumulator,which belong to the CDF family,or NRAMP family and/or ZIP family.The overexpression of the metal ion transporter genes play important roles not only in heavy metal uptaking,trafficking,distribution and accumulation in the cell,but also in increase the heavy metal tolerance of hyperaccumulator.

Abstract:Seagrass is a kind of monocotyledonous plants growing in shallow coastal area and playing an important role in maintaining offshore ecological balance.It has been proved that heavy metals can impose various effects on seagrass.This paper summarized the research advances about the impacts of heavy metals on seagrass from the aspects of(1) accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in seagrass and related affecting factors,(2) impacts of heavy metals on physiological and ecological characteristics,especially photosynthetic efficiency of seagrass,and(3) physiological and biochemical adaption mechanisms of seagrass under heavy metals contamination.Further research directions were suggested,including(1) differences in heavy metals absorption capacity of seagrass leaf and root,(2) synergistic and antagonistic effects of various heavy metals,(3) acute and chronic toxicity of various heavy metals,and(4) toxicity mechanisms of heavy metals on seagrass.

Abstract:In the paper,these influencing factors about actions of heavy metals' absorption/desorption,dissolution/precipitation,oxidation/deoxidation and chelation in soil are summarized since the beginning of the 21 century,such as clay mineral,microbe,humus,pH,heavy metal's character,soil enzyme,human activity and so on.Meanwhile,these researches about behavior and character of heavy metal have not been gotten enough recognition under complex outdoors,and the relationship of vegetable and heavy metals has little been focused,and the difference of behavior between heavy metals and compounds in different areas and agrotypes need to be scientificlly explained and many of restoration technologies about polluted soils by heavy metals appeare to be risk,and integrated pollution of heavy metals need to continue quantification in soil.

Abstract:The heavy metal cadmium (Cd), as one of the major environmentally toxic pollutants, has serious impacts on the growth, development, and physiological functions of plants and animals, leading to deterioration of environmental quality and threats to human health. Research on how plants absorb and transport Cd, as well as its enrichment and detoxification mechanisms, is of great significance to the development of phytoremediation technologies for ecological and environmental management. This article summarises the research progress on the enrichment of heavy metal cadmium in plants in recent years, including the uptake, transport, and accumulation of Cd in plants. The role of plant roots, compartmentalisation, chelation, antioxidation, stress, and osmotic adjustment in the process of plant Cd enrichment are discussed. Finally, problems are proposed to provide a more comprehensive theoretical basis for the further application of phytoremediation technology in the field of heavy metal pollution.

Abstract:Phytoremediation is now regarded as one of the most important techniques to clean soil of heavy metal contamination.It is a key for phytoremediation to select proper plants.Concept of species in taxonomy is not enough in identifying plants for ecological restoration.Rather,consideration must be taken at the level of ecotype.Plants of different ecotype often have large difference in accumulating and tolerating heavy metal,although they are classified as the same species in taxonomy.They could respond differently to variation of concentration,ion form,and interaction of heavy metals.Difference in accumulating heavy metals is mainly attributed to the difference of heavy metal transporter,detoxication and genetics.Difference in enduring heavy metals is due to the difference in genetics,enzyme system and sequestration in cell of different ecotypic plants,while phytochelatins (PC) is not a key factor.Plants of different ecotype are ideal materials in study of hyperaccumulation,toleration and detoxication of heavy metals.This paper introduces the concept,origination and classification of ecotype.It also reviews research progress in heavy metal accumulation and toleration of different ecotypic plants.

Abstract:Goal, Scope and Background As one of the consequences of heavy metal pollution in soil, water and air, plants are contaminated by heavy metals in some parts of China. To understand the effects of heavy metals upon plants and the resistance mechanisms, would make it possible to use plants for cleaning and remediating heavy metal-polluted sites. Methods The research results on the effects of heavy metals on plants and resistant mechanisms are compiled from Chinese publications from scientific journals and university journals, mostly published during the last decade. Results and Discussion Effects of heavy metals on plants result in growth inhibition, structure damage, a decline of physiological and biochemical activities as well as of the function of plants. The effects and bioavailability of heavy metals depend on many factors, such as environmental conditions, pH, species of element, organic substances of the media and fertilization, plant species. But, there are also studies on plant resistance mechanisms to protect plants against the toxic effects of heavy metals such as combining heavy metals by proteins and expressing of detoxifying enzyme and nucleic acid, these mechanisms are integrated to protect the plants against injury by heavy metals. Conclusions There are two aspects on the interaction of plants and heavy metals. On one hand, heavy metals show negative effects on plants. On the other hand, plants have their own resistance mechanisms against toxic effects and for detoxifying heavy metal pollution. Recommendations and Outlook To study the effects of heavy metals on plants and mechanisms of resistance, one must select crop cultivars and/or plants for removing heavy metals from soil and water. More highly resistant plants can be selected especially for a remediation of the pollution site. The molecular mechanisms of resistance of plants to heavy metals should be studied further to develop the actual resistance of these plants to heavy metals. Understanding the bioavailability of heavy metals is advantageous for plant cultivation and phytoremediation. Decrease in the bioavailability to farmlands would reduce the accumulation of heavy metals in food. Alternatively, one could increase the bioavailability of plants to extract more heavy metals.

Abstract:Plants posses homeostasis mechanisms to minimize the damage from exposure to heavy metal stress. These mechanisms involve in the binding of heavy metals to cell wall, immobilization exclusion of the plasma membrane, efflux of these toxic metal ions, reduction of heavy metal transport, compartmentalization and metal chelation by tonoplast-located transporters, expression of more general stress response mechanisms such as stress proteins. This review provides a broad overview of the molecular mechanisms involved in heavy metal detoxification and tolerance.

Abstract:Heavy metals like cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), resulting from anthropogenic activities, are elements with high persistence in nature, being able to accumulate in soils, water, and plants with significant impact to human and animal health. This study investigates the phytoremediation capacity of Silphium perfoliatum L. as a specific heavy metal hyperaccumulator and the effects of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb on some physiological and biochemical indices by growing plants under floating hydroponic systems in nutrient solutions under the presence of heavy metals. One-year-old plants of S. perfoliatum grown for 20 days in Hoagland solution with the addition of (ppm) Cu-400, Zn-1200, Cd-20, Pb-400, and Cu+Zn+Cd+Pb (400/1200/20/400) were investigated with respect to the control. The level of phytoremediation, manifested by the ability of heavy metal absorption and accumulation, was assessed. In addition, the impact of stress on the proline content, photosynthetic pigments, and enzymatic activity, as being key components of metabolism, was determined. The obtained results revealed a good absorption and selective accumulation capacity of S. perfoliatum plants for the studied heavy metals. Therefore, Cu and Zn mainly accumulate in the stems, Cd in the roots and stems, while Pb mainly accumulates in the roots. The proline tended to increase under stress conditions, depending on the pollutant and its concentration, with higher values in leaves and stems under the associated stress of the four metals and individually for Pb and Cd. In addition, the enzymatic activity recorded different values depending on the plant organ, its type, and the metal concentration on its substrate. The obtained results indicate a strong correlation between the metal type, concentration, and the mechanisms of absorption/accumulation of S. perfoliatum species, as well as the specific reactions of metabolic response.

Abstract:With aggravation of industrial pollution and increase of agricultural chemical material,the problem of heavy metal pollution becomes more and more serious in soil;soil animals can absorb and accumulate part of residue of heavy metal which threats health of animals and human through food chain.On the basis of discussion of Characteristics of heavy metals enrichment,the author analysis comprehensively toxic effect on the soil animals of heavy metal from individual,population and community level and detoxification strategy of soil animal in soil which is polluted by heavy metal.Finally,in order to provide a reference for further studying,the author analyzed these issues existed and forecast the research trends in terms of methods to detect toxicity of heavy metals,combined pollution mechanisms,research of molecular mechanisms and soil animals' ecological restoration function.

Abstract:Phytoremediation is an ecological technique used to clean polluted soils by heavy metals.The study on phytoreme- diation and hyperaccumulator is one of the hot fields of academic research worldwide.The mechanism of phytoremediation for soil polluted by heavy metals is that plants absorb,accumulate and translate pollutants.Phytoremediation has many advantages such as low cost,no worsening the ecological environment of soils and rivers and no recontamination.Reviewed the actuality of phytoreme- diation of soil polluted by heavy metal and the study of mechanism on hyper-accumulator in past ten years,and discussed some shortage of the technology still exist currently on phytoremediation and direction of development.

Abstract:Among abiotic stress, the toxicity of metals impacts negatively on plants' growth and productivity. This toxicity promotes various perturbations in plants at different levels. To withstand stress, plants involve efficient mechanisms through the implication of various signaling pathways. These pathways enhance the expression of many target genes among them gene coding for metal transporters. Various metal transporters which are localized at the plasma membrane and/or at the tonoplast are crucial in metal stress response. Furthermore, metal detoxification is provided by metal-binding proteins like phytochelatins and metallothioneins. The understanding of the molecular basis of metal toxicities signaling pathways and tolerance mechanisms is crucial for genetic engineering to produce transgenic plants that enhance phytoremediation. This review presents an overview of the recent advances in our understanding of metal stress response. Firstly, we described the effect of metal stress on plants. Then, we highlight the mechanisms involved in metal detoxification and the importance of the regulation in the response to heavy metal stress. Finally, we mentioned the importance of genetic engineering for enhancing the phytoremediation technique. In the end, the response to heavy metal stress is complex and implicates various components. Thus, further studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms involved in response to this abiotic stress.

Abstract:This paper briefly reviews the progress in studies of wetland plants in terms of heavy metal pollution. The current research mainly includes the following areas: (1) metal uptake, translocation, and distributions in wetland plants and toxicological effects on wetland plants, (2) radial oxygen loss (ROL) of wetland plants and its effects on metal mobility in rhizosphere soils, (3) constitutional metal tolerance in wetland plants, and (4) mechanisms of metal tolerance by wetland plants. Although a number of accomplishments have been achieved, many issues still remain unanswered. The future research effort is likely to focus on the ROL of wetland plants affecting metal speciation and bioavailability in rhizosphere soils, and the development of rhizosphere management technologies to facilitate and improve practical applications of phytoremediation of metal-polluted soils.
