Abstract:This study examines the effect of online reviews on new product sales for consumer electronics and video games. Analyses of panel data of 332 new products from Amazon.com over nine months reveal that the valence of reviews and the volume of page views have a stronger effect on search products, whereas the volume of reviews is more important for experience products. The results also show that the volume of reviews has a significant effect on new product sales in the early period and such effect decreases over time. Moreover, the percentage of negative reviews has a greater effect than that of positive reviews, confirming the negativity bias. Thus, marketers need to consider the distinctive influences of various aspects of online reviews when launching new products and devising e-marketing strategies.

Abstract:Consumers always refer to others' opinions when making purchase decisions,especially in case of experience goods.With the advance of information technology and platforms,firms are provided with opportunities as well as challenges to initiate and manage online consumer reviews.Several key questions emerge in the process: can online consumer reviews influence the product sales? If so,how should we measure the impact? What's the dynamics of the impact across different stages of a product life cycle? Based on a large-sample panel data of more than 32 million online book reviews from dangdang.com,the leading online bookseller in China,we find that online consumer reviews have a significant impact on book sales.Specifically,both volume and valence of the consumer reviews have positive impact on sales,while the variance shows negative effect.In addition,the effect of online consumer reviews gradually declines across the product life cycle.In the early stage of the product life cycle,the volume,valence and variance of reviews all show significant impacts.When it comes to the later stage,only volume has significant impact.

Abstract:This article examines how product and consumer characteristics moderate the influence of online consumer reviews on product sales using data from the video game industry. The findings indicate that online reviews are more influential for less popular games and games whose players have greater Internet experience. The article shows differential impact of consumer reviews across products in the same product category and suggests that firms’ online marketing strategies should be contingent on product and consumer characteristics. The authors discuss the implications of these results in light of the increased share of niche products in recent years.

Abstract:Previous studies have demonstrated that online reviews play an important role in the purchase decision process. Though the effects of positive and negative reviews to consumers' purchase decisions have been analyzed, they were examined statically and separately. In reality, online review community allows everyone to express and receive opinions and individuals can reexamine their opinions after receiving messages from others. The goal of this paper is to study how potential customers form their opinions dynamically under the effects of both positive and negative reviews using a numerical simulation. The results show that consumers with different membership levels have different information sensitivities to online reviews. Consumers at low and medium membership levels are often persuaded by online reviews, regardless of their initial opinion about a product. On the other hand, online reviews have less effect on consumers at higher membership levels, who often make purchase decisions based on their initial impressions of a product.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate how prior reviews posted by other consumers affect subsequent consumers' evaluations and to what extent the review temporal distance can increase or reduce the social influence of prior reviews. In this study's restaurant context, review temporal distance refers to the duration between dining time and review time of a dining experience.Design/methodology/approach The data of paired online restaurant reservations and reviews are analyzed using Ordered Logit Model. Two robustness checks are conducted to test the stability of the main estimation results.Findings The empirical results demonstrate that consumers' restaurant evaluation is socially influenced by both the prior average review rating and number of prior reviews; review temporal distance has a direct negative effect on consumers' restaurant evaluation; and review temporal distance increases the social influence of prior reviews.Practical implications This study suggests that online review matters. Both restaurants and the online review platforms should encourage consumers to share their experiences and post online reviews immediately after their consumption.Originality/value The study contributes to the literature on electronic word-of-mouth, social influence and psychological distance. First, the bi-directional nature of social influence on electronic word-of-mouth for experience-oriented product is documented. Second, for the first time, this study examines how review temporal distance could affect the social influence on consumers' restaurant evaluation.

Abstract:Consumers increasingly rely on online reviews to make their purchase decisions. Drawing from linguistics and sociology research, the authors posit that comparative reviews, which highlight the similarities and differences between a focal product and its alternatives, may influence consumers' regulation systems and perceived credibility, thereby affecting product sales. The authors examined 61,480 reviews on e-commerce platforms to explore the effects of comparative reviews and their valence on product sales. By using a supervised learning approach, they identified positive and negative comparative reviews, as well as positive and negative regular reviews, and then applied a two-way fixed-effects model. The results show that comparative reviews positively impacted product sales. Specifically, positive comparative reviews had a greater effect than positive regular reviews, whereas negative comparative reviews had a lesser absolute effect than negative regular reviews on product sales. Moreover, positive comparative reviews exerted a greater absolute effect than negative ones. A follow-up controlled lab study further substantiated the authors' results and insights. The findings offer new insights and practical guidance for marketers and practitioners in promoting more comparative review posts and optimizing online review presentations.

Abstract:This research examines the business impact of online reviews. It empirically investigates the influence of numerical and textual reviews on product sales performance. We use a Joint Sentiment-Topic model to extract the topics and associated sentiments in review texts. We further propose that numerical rating mediates the effects of textual sentiments. Findings not only contribute to the knowledge of how eWOM impacts product sales, but also illustrate how numerical rating and textual reviews interplay while shaping product sales. In practice, the findings help online vendors strategize business analytics operations by focusing on more relevant aspects that ultimately drive sales.

Abstract:Online reviews, as one kind of new marketing methods, are becoming increasingly important in influencing preferences and decision-making of consumers. In view of this, this paper conducts an empirical study on Dangdang Books, constructs a research framework on correlation between product sales and aspects of online reviews, and explores the correction through the panel data econometric model. Compared to former research, our work analyzes real data on product sales instead of the rank of sales. Based on our study results and comparison with others' research results on Amazon (amazon.com), we provide several guiding suggestions for online review systems in the Chinese context. These systems should pay attention to emotional tendency of reviews, reviewer ranking mechanisms, spotlight reviews, review format and review voting mechanisms.

Abstract:The characteristics of online reviews are important factors that affect perceived usefulness and purchase decisior.The effect of review valence,review type and temporal distance on perceived usefulness and purchase intention were verified by using the method of situational experiment.The results show that the three attributive characters of online reviews have multiple sets of double factors of interaction on perceived usefulness and purchase intention,and there are significant differences in purchasing intention under different temporal distance,review valence and review type.However,the interaction between review valence and review type has no significant effect on perceived usefulness of online reviews,and the interaction between temporal distance and review type has no significant effect on purchase intentior.The study explains the inconsistency of previous research results from more factors.

Abstract:This paper takes the women's clothing of online shopping as the research object. Based on the B2C trading platform, collecting the data by designing and issuing the questionnaire, through correlation analysis and regression analysis with the data, this paper studies the influence degree that the related factors of online reviews impact consumers' purchase decisions. We find that the factors of online reviews, which include the quality of reviews' content, the valence of reviews and the timeliness of reviews, influence the consumer's purchasing decision significantly, but the other factors including the quantity of reviews and the reputation of reviewers do not. These findings provide valuable reference for online retailers to formula the marketing strategy and theoretical significance to future study in other professions.

Abstract:As an emerging platform for online shopping, online review changed the network consumer's purchase mode. In this paper, we study the effect of potential online purchaser influenced by the online reviews, by means of the questionnaire. The final study shows that: the Internet consumers when making purchase decisions are mostly affected by the average scores of products; and not significantly affected by the following three factors: the proportion of comment buyers accounted for all buyers, the sooner or later of online reviews and whether the contents reflecting the latest product information or not.

Abstract:Online reviews are of great importance in supporting the purchasing decision making of online consumers. With the prospering of e-commerce, increasingly fraudulent reviews are appearing on e-commerce platforms to mislead consumers, and an increasing number of consumers are worrying about being deceived in online shopping. However, little research effort has been invested in studying the impact of review credibility perception caused by online review fraud on product sales. To fill this research gap, this paper conducts empirical research on the moderating effect of consumers' credibility perception of online reviews. Here, review credibility perception, or consumers' credibility perception of online reviews, refers to the credibility or trust that consumers have in the reviews they are reading. Building on dual-process theory, this paper develops two hypotheses to understand why and how review credibility perception influence consumer decision-making behaviors. The empirical studies in this paper demonstrate that consumers' credibility perception of online reviews moderate the effect of review sentiment on product sales. This work also found that consumers' credibility perception of online reviews have a heterogeneous effect on product sales. The effect shifts the relationship between review sentiment and product sales from an inverted U-shape relationship to a monotonous positive relationship with the improvement of consumers' credibility perception of online reviews. This study has great managerial implications for platforms and vendors to improve online review management.

Abstract:Online word-of-mouth (WOM) communication in the form of online product reviews, such as those provided by consumers who have previously purchased a product, has become a major information source for consumers and marketers about a product's quality. The literature has thus far used online product reviews to predict a product's sales and future success, and found a positive relationship between the mean review scores and product sales. However, the questions that whether consumers appreciate both quantitative and qualitative aspects of online review and how do they use review information remain unaddressed. Using portfolio methodology, this paper empirically shows that consumers do appreciate the quality value difference between a good review and a bad review, and respond more to a review written by a reviewer with better reputation and higher exposure. Furthermore, it shows that the impact of online review on sales is moderated by the information environment of product. Finally, we find that the impact of reviewer exposure and product coverage on sales is moderated by the innovation level of review signal

Abstract:The effect of online product reviews on product sales has become a central interest of marketing and information systems researchers because of the popularity of such type of reviews. However, most previous studies were conducted at the product level, rather than at the website level. Analysing the influence of online reviews on consumer intention to purchase on websites is necessary because websites are more concerned about the aggregate effect of online reviews on sales, rather than sales from individual products. Using word-of-mouth literature and information quality theory as bases, we examine whether and how online reviews affect consumer purchase intention on a specific website. We identify four online review attributes, namely, intrinsic quality of online reviews, number of online reviews, reviewer reputation, and review timeliness, and assess their effects on consumer purchase intention. The findings of this study reveal the positive effects of the first two factors on consumer purchase intention, whereas the remaining two attributes show no such influence.

Abstract:When making the purchase decisions,consumers always expect to learn from other consumers’ comments on the same products or services.After their purchasing,they also would like to share their own experiences with others.Such informal communications between consumers on products or services are defined as word-of-mouth(WOM).With the development of Internet and information technology,consumers can post their comments on the products,services or online sellers on various online platforms,like their personal blogs,BBS,online social media,E-commerce websites and so on.Both the transmission pattern and influential scope of word-of-month are changing dramatically.Online word-of-mouth breaks the distance and time limit of traditional offline word-of-mouth,which has a great impact on consumers’ cognitions,decisions and behaviors.For firms,they can also initiate and manipulate the online word-of-month with low costs.Therefore,the development of online word-of-month has a great significance both to the consumers and firms.In this paper,we are going to explore some important questions of online word-of-mouth: Through what mechanism does the online word-of-mouth impact sales of experience goods? Does such an impact majorly work through the awareness effect or persuasive effect of online consumer reviews? What kind of role does endogeneity play in this process? Using archived online book sales and word-of-mouth data from the domestic leading online bookseller of dangdang.com,this research examines the effect of online word-of-mouth on book sales.We find that the consideration of endogeneity makes a big difference in estimation.After controlling for endogeneity using a first difference analysis,the impact of valence on sales disappears while the impact of volume is still significant.The result suggests that it is the awareness effect instead of persuasive effect dominating its influences.Finally,we also discuss the managerial and practical implications as well as point out the directions for future research.

Abstract:With the prevalence of the Internet and new media channels, consumer reviews have become one of the main determinants of Consumers’ purchasing decisions. This paper uses the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model to identify the key factors that are of major concern to consumers, including design factors, laptop setup factors, logistics factors, after-sales factors, and user experience factors. And, we classify these factors into product quality factors and supporting service factors for new products. We then explore the relationship between online reviews and purchase decisions under these different factors, and also further explore the impact of interactions between online review metrics on purchase decisions. Our findings suggest that the impact of online reviews on consumer purchase decisions also varies considerably across different consumer focus factors. In addition, we find that the impact of the interaction between online review features is complex. In particular, consumers do not follow the positive guidance and make purchase decisions as we would expect when confronted with a large number of positive emotional polarity online reviews. Meanwhile, the interaction between negative emotional polarity and variance of online reviews had no significant effect on consumer purchase decisions. The variance of online reviews has a limited role in reducing consumer risk perceptions triggered by negative emotional polarity. Our study provides new evidence for the study of the impact of online reviews through text mining.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increase in online review manipulation on the platforms of electronic commerce. Previous studies clarify the benefits and harms of online review manipulation for firms, and they provide mixed conclusions on the influence of online review manipulation. However, the effect of online review manipulation on product sales has not yet been thoroughly studied due to the covert nature of review manipulation. To fill this research gap, this paper examines the different effects of review manipulation in three dimensions: quantity manipulation, quality manipulation, and relation manipulation. Drawing on the Information Manipulation Theory, which reveals the manipulation behaviors of different dimensions, it is proposed that the influence of online review manipulation differs significantly among different information manipulation dimensions. The results of the empirical experiments show that the effect of review quantity manipulation on product sales exhibits an inverted U-shape. In addition, review quality manipulation positively affects product sales, but review relation manipulation exerts a negative effect. Moreover, the magnitude of the effect of review manipulation is contingent upon review manipulation duration. The findings shed light on the heterogeneous effect of review manipulation dimensions on product sales from an information manipulation perspective and suggest a need for improvement in online fraudulent review detection in the early stage of review manipulation.

Abstract:Using a unique data set that includes individually identifiable consumer online browsing and purchase data in the restaurant industry, this paper examines how individual consumer shopping characteristics and product characteristics moderate the effect of online reviews on individual consumer choice based on information search theory and signaling theory. We find that different dimensions of reviews have distinctive impacts on consumers with different information search needs and behaviors based on their shopping experience, inertia tendency and proneness to coupon promotions. Online reviews also influence consumers’ purchase decisions differently depending on the available information and signals indicated by the product’s ongoing coupon promotions and other signaling characteristics such as the overall price level. Specifically, the valence of reviews primarily affects the consumers who have more shopping experience, who demonstrate less inertia, or who are less prone to coupons, whereas the volume of reviews more significantly affects the highly coupon prone consumers or consumers with high inertia tendency. When the product is of low price or the seller offers a coupon for the product, the number of reviews plays a more important role in affecting consumers’ decision. This research not only enriches the online review literature by highlighting the differential effects of online reviews but also offers practical guidelines to sellers and platforms that wish to use online reviews together with coupon promotions to stimulate sales. Our research also highlights how companies can take advantage of the powerful combination of consumers’ shopping behavior data with online review browsing data to design timely and innovative marketing activities.

Abstract:Purpose – This study aims to investigate the impacts of online review and source features upon travelers’ online hotel booking intentions. Design/methodology/approach – This study developed a research model and empirically examined the model by collecting data from business travelers in the Mainland China. Factor analysis was adopted to identify features of online reviews content and source attribute. Regression analysis was used to examine impacts of these attributes upon travelers’ online booking intention. Findings – Six features of online reviews content and one source attribute were identified, namely, usefulness, reviewer expertise, timeliness, volume, valence (negative and positive) and comprehensiveness. Regression analysis results testified positive causal relationships between usefulness, reviewer expertise, timeliness, volume and comprehensiveness and respondents’ online booking intentions. A significantly negative relation between negative online reviews and online booking intentions was identified, whereas impacts from positive online reviews upon booking intentions were not statistically significant. Research limitations/implications – The major limitation of this study is that interrelationships among features of online reviews, which were discussed in other similar studies, were not considered. Still, this study benefited researchers from scrutinizing features of online reviews, rather than several of them. As such, it offered more comprehensive suggestions for practitioners in how to better utilize online reviews as a marketing tool. Practical implications – Hospitality practitioners could enhance consumer review management by applying the six underlying factors of online review in the present study to find out the ways of increasing consumers’ booking intentions in the specific hotel contexts. Originality/value – A major theoretical contribution of this paper is its comprehensiveness in examining features of review content as well as its source simultaneously. This study also offered areas worthy of more research efforts from perspectives of practitioners and researchers.
