Abstract:Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) has been extensively used to study thermal transport at various length scales in many materials. In this method, two local thermostats at different temperatures are used to generate a nonequilibrium steady state with a constant heat flux. Conventionally, the thermal conductivity of a finite system is calculated as the ratio between the heat flux and the temperature gradient extracted from the linear part of the temperature profile away from the local thermostats. Here, we show that, with a proper choice of the thermostat, the nonlinear part of the temperature profile should actually not be excluded in thermal transport calculations. We compare NEMD results against those from the atomistic Green's function method in the ballistic regime and those from the homogeneous nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method in the ballistic-to-diffusive regime. These comparisons suggest that in all the transport regimes, one should directly calculate the thermal conductance from the temperature difference between the heat source and sink and, if needed, convert it into the thermal conductivity by multiplying it with the system length. Furthermore, we find that the Langevin thermostat outperforms the Nosé-Hoover (chain) thermostat in NEMD simulations because of its stochastic and local nature. We show that this is particularly important for studying asymmetric carbon-based nanostructures, for which the Nosé-Hoover thermostat can produce artifacts leading to unphysical thermal rectification.

Abstract:Exposing a solution to a temperature gradient can lead to the accumulation of particles on either the cold or warm side. This phenomenon is known as thermophoresis, and its microscopic origin is still debated. Here, we show that thermophoresis can be observed in any system having internal states with different transport properties, and temperature-modulated rates of transitions between the states. These internal degrees of freedom might be configurational, chemical or velocity states. We also derive an expression for the Soret coefficient, which decides whether particles accumulate on the cold or warm side. Our framework can be applied to any chemical reaction system diffusing in a temperature gradient. It also captures the possibility to observe a sign inversion of the Soret coefficient as the competition between chemical and velocity states. We establish thermophoresis as a genuine non-equilibrium effect, originating from internal microscopic currents consistent with the necessity of transporting heat from warm to cold regions.

Unification of Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics and the Mode-Resolved Phonon Boltzmann Equation for Thermal Transport Simulations

Abstract:Nano-size confinement induces many intriguing non-Fourier heat conduction phenomena, such as nonlinear temperature gradients, temperature jumps near the contacts, and size-dependent thermal conductivity. Over the past decades, these effects have been studied and interpreted by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) simulations separately, but no theory that unifies these two methods has ever been established. In this work, we unify these methods using a quantitative mode-level comparison and demonstrate that they are equivalent for various thermostats. We show that different thermostats result in different non-Fourier thermal transport characteristics due to the different mode-level phonon excitations inside the thermostats, which explains the different size-dependent thermal conductivities calculated using different reservoirs, even though they give the same bulk thermal conductivity. Specifically, the Langevin thermostat behaves like a thermalizing boundary in phonon BTE and provides mode-level thermal-equilibrium phonon outlets, while the Nose-Hoover chain thermostat and velocity rescaling method behave like biased reservoirs, which provide a spatially uniform heat generation and mode-level nonequilibrium phonon outlets. These findings explain why different experimental measurement methods can yield different size-dependent thermal conductivity. They also indicate that the thermal conductivity of materials can be tuned for various applications by specifically designing thermostats. The unification of NEMD and phonon BTE will largely facilitate the study of thermal transport in complex systems in the future by, e.g., replacing computationally unaffordable first-principles NEMD simulations with computationally less expensive spectral BTE simulations.

Abstract:We study a reacting mixture (217 <-> F-2) in a temperature gradient. We had previously used boundary-driven non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations to study this system, and found that the reaction was close to local chemical equilibrium in temperature gradients up to 1012 K/m. Using the condition of local chemical equilibrium, we show that the heat of transfer of the reacting mixture is equal to minus the enthalpy of the reaction. The fact that the sign of the heat of transfer is determined by the type of reaction adds insight to the discussion of the origin of the sign.

Abstract:We have examined a simple chemical reaction in a temperature gradient; 2F <==> F2. A mechanical model was used, based on Stillinger and Weber's 2- and 3-body potentials. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations showed that the chemical reaction is in local thermodynamic as well as in local chemical equilibrium (delta(r)G = 0) in the supercritical fluid, for temperature gradients up to 10(12) K m(-1). The reaction is thus diffusion-controlled. The velocity distributions of both components were everywhere close to being Maxwellian. The peak distributions were shifted slightly up or down from the average velocity of all particles. The shift depended on the magnitude of the temperature gradient. The results support the assumption that the entropy production of the reacting mixture can be written as a product sum of fluxes and forces. The temperature gradient promotes interdiffusion of components in the stationary state, a small reaction rate and an accumulation of the molecule in the cold region and the atom in the hot region.

Abstract:We calculate transport properties of a reacting mixture of F and F(2) from results of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The reaction investigated is controlled by thermal diffusion and is close to local chemical equilibrium. The simulations show that a formulation of the transport problem in terms of classical non-equilibrium thermodynamics theory is sound. The chemical reaction has a large effect on the magnitude and temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity and the interdiffusion coefficient. The increase in the thermal conductivity in the presence of the chemical reaction, can be understood as a response to an imposed temperature gradient, which reduces the entropy production. The heat of transfer for the Soret stationary state was more than 100 kJ mol(-1), meaning that the Dufour and Soret effects are non-negligible in reacting mixtures. This sheds new light on the transport properties of reacting mixtures.

Abstract:Thermally induced diffusion of chemicals is observed in many natural phenomena and engineering processes. We present analytical solutions to the non-isothermal diffusion of chemicals under combined effects of molecular and thermal diffusion processes and under variable diffusion coefficient with temperature. The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is adopted to successfully derive the analytical solutions to the one-dimensional boundary problem under Neumann and Dirichlet outflow conditions. The accuracy of the analytical model developed is examined against three benchmarks including two experimental datasets. The analytical models are applied to develop an understanding of how the chemical transfer under non-isothermal conditions is governed by a combination of the Soret effect and temperature dependency of diffusion coefficient. We demonstrate that the mass transfer components due to thermal diffusion (or Soret effect) and the temperature dependency of diffusion coefficients are equally important to develop an accurate assessment of non-isothermal diffusion problem. Under the conditions of the case study considered, we show that a threshold for the Soret coefficient exists at which the temperature dependency of chemical diffusion coefficient can induce equally or larger influences on the chemical compared to the influence of thermal diffusion. The analytical solutions proposed also provide modelling benchmarks to examine the accuracy of alternative multiphysics numerical models for studying the non-isothermal diffusion problems in porous media. A Unified Phonon Interpretation for the Non-Fourier Heat Conduction by Non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Nanoconfinement induces many intriguing non-Fourier heat conduction phenomena that have been extensively studied in recent years, such as the nonlinear temperature profile inside the devices, the temperature jumps near the contacts, and the finite-size effects. The understanding of these phenomena, however, has been a matter of debate over the past two decades. In this work, we demonstrate a unified phonon interpretation of non-Fourier heat conduction which can help to understand these phenomena by a mode-to-mode correspondence between the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations and the mode-resolved phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). It is found that the nanoscale phonon transport characteristics including temperature profile, the heat flux value and the modal temperature depend on the applied thermal reservoirs on the two contacts. Our NEMD simulations demonstrate that Langevin thermostat behaves like an infinitely large thermal reservoir and provides thermally equilibrium mode-resolved phonon outlets, while biased reservoirs, e.g., Nose-Hoover chain thermostat and velocity rescaling method behave like non-equilibrium phonon outlets. Our interpretation clearly demonstrates that the non-Fourier heat transport phenomena are originated from a combination of non-diffusive phonon transport and phonon thermal nonequilibrium. This work provides a clear understanding of nanoscale heat transport and may guide the measurement and control of thermal transport in various applications.

Abstract:Diffusion-controlled phase transformations are of singular importance in controlling microstructures and mechanical properties but are difficult to model and calculate for Fe-C-X alloys because of the large difference in the diffusivities of the interstitial element C and the substitutional element X. In this work, the thermodynamic extremal principle was applied to propose a modified quasi-sharp-interface model that integrates trans-interface diffusion from the product phase to the interface, trans-interface diffusion from the interface to the parent phase, interface migration and bulk diffusion of C and X. Applications to isothermal and cyclic phase transformations showed that the model allows the arbitrary setting of the initial conditions. For isothermal phase transformations, three different kinds of characteristic phase transformation kinetics (i.e., a gradual transition from non-partition to partition, a sharp transition from non-partition to partition and solely partition) were found, and their dependence on the interface properties, the grain size and the isothermal temperature was discussed. For both isothermal and cyclic phase transformations, the important roles of trans-interface diffusion and interface migration were highlighted.

Abstract:Exposing a solution to a temperature gradient can lead to the accumulation of particles on either the cold or warm side. This phenomenon, known as thermophoresis, has been discovered more than a century ago, and yet its microscopic origin is still debated. Here, we show that thermophoresis can be observed in any system such that the transitions between different internal states are modulated by temperature and such that different internal states have different transport properties. We establish thermophoresis as a genuine non-equilibrium effect, whereby a system of currents in real and internal space that is consistent with the thermodynamic necessity of transporting heat from warm to cold regions. Our approach also provides an expression for the Soret coefficient, which decides whether particles accumulate on the cold or on the warm side, that is associated with the correlation between the energies of the internal states and their transport properties, that instead remain system-specific quantities. Finally, we connect our results to previous approaches based on close-to-equilibrium energetics. Our thermodynamically consistent approach thus encompasses and generalizes previous findings.

Thermodynamics of Non-equilibrium Diffuse-Interfaces in Mesoscale Phase Transformations

Abstract:We present a new phase-field formulation for the non-equilibrium interface kinetics. The diffuse interface is considered an integral of numerous representative volume elements (RVEs), in which there is a two-phase mixture with two conserved and two non-conserved concentration fields. This particular way of separating concentration fields leads to two distinct dissipative processes besides the phase boundary migration, i.e., trans-sharp-interface diffusion between different phases within a single RVE and trans-diffuse-interface diffusion between different RVEs within a single phase. A two-part mechanism is proposed to balance the driving forces and energy dissipation for diffusionless and diffusional processes in RVEs. Moreover, the classical interface friction and solute drag can be recovered by integrating the diffuse interface. Compared with the sharp interface theory, the present diffuse interface can reproduce the atomic simulated partial-drag self-consistently in thermodynamics.

Abstract:We present a generalization of AEMD approach, routinely applied to estimate thermal conductivity, to the more general case in which Soret and Dufour effects determine a coupled heat-mass transfer. We show that, by starting from microscopical definitions of heat and mass currents, conservation laws dictates the form of the differential equations governing the time evolution. In particular, we focus to the well specific case in which a closed-form solution of the system is possible and derive the analytical form of time-evolution of temperature and concentration scalar fields in the case in which step-like initial profiles are imposed across a rectangular simulation cell. The validity of this new generalized expression is finally validated using as benchamrk system a two-component Lennard-Jones liquid system, for which generalized diffusivities are estimated in different reduced temperature and density region of phase diagram.

Optimizing reaction and transport fluxes in temperature gradient-driven chemical reaction-diffusion systems

Abstract:Temperature gradients represent energy sources that can be harvested to generate steady reaction or transport fluxes. Technological developments could lead to the transfer of free energy from heat sources and sinks to chemical systems for the purpose of extraction, thermal batteries, or nonequilibrium synthesis. We present a theoretical study of 1D chemical systems subjected to temperature gradients. A complete theoretical framework describes the behavior of the system induced by various temperature profiles. An exact mathematical derivation was established for a simple two-compartment model and was generalized to arbitrary reaction-diffusion systems based on numerical models. An experimental system was eventually scaled and tuned to optimize either nonequilibrium chemical transport or reaction. The relevant parameters for this description were identified; they focused on the system symmetry for chemical reaction and transport. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic approaches lead to a description analogous to electric circuits. Temperature gradients lead to the onset of a steady chemical force, which maintains steady reaction-diffusion fluxes moderated by chemical resistance. The system activity was then assessed using the entropy production rate as a measure of its dissipated power. The chemical characteristics of the system can be tuned for general optimization of the nonequilibrium state or for the specific optimization of either transport or reaction processes. The shape of the temperature gradient can be tailored to precisely control the spatial localization of active processes, targeting either precise spatial localization or propagation over large areas. The resulting temperature-driven chemical system can in turn be used to drive secondary processes into either nonequilibrium reaction fluxes or concentration gradients.

Abstract:Evaporation and condensation near the triple phase contact line is important for the heat and mass transfer at the micro-nano scale. In the present work, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (NEMD) were conducted to investigate the evaporation and condensation in thin liquid films at a triple phase system. The simulation domain was a cuboid with periodic boundary conditions. All the three phases were made up of Lennard-Jones molecules (platinum and argon). As solid walls were set with different temperatures, a non-equilibrium state system was established. Intensive evaporation and condensation through the thin liquid films were observed. The evaporation mass flux, the non-evaporation region on the heating wall and the related disjoining pressure were discussed and compared to theoretical results.

Interplay between thermal and compositional gradients decides the microstructure during thermomigration: a phase-field study

Abstract:The presence of thermal gradients in alloys often leads to non-uniformity in concentration profiles, which can induce the thermomigration of microstructural features such as precipitates. To investigate such microstructural changes, we present a phase-field model that incorporates coupling between concentration and thermal gradients. First, we simulated the evolution of non-uniform concentration profiles in the single-phase regions of Fe-C and Fe-N alloy systems due to imposed thermal gradients. To validate our model with the classical experiments performed by Darken and Oriani, we studied the evolution of spatially varying concentration profiles where thermal gradients encompass single-phase and two-phase regions. We developed a parameterized thermodynamic description of the two-phase region of a binary alloy to systematically study the effect of interactions between chemically-driven and thermal gradient-driven diffusion of solute on the evolution of precipitates. Our simulations show how thermal gradient, precipitate size, and interparticle distance influence the migration and associated morphological changes of precipitates. The composition profiles and migration rates obtained from single-particle simulations show an exact match with our analytical model. We use twoparticle simulations to show conditions under which thermomigration induces the growth of the smaller particle and shrinkage of the larger one in contrast to the isothermal Ostwald ripening behavior. Our multiparticle simulations show similar behavior during coarsening. Moreover, in the presence of a thermal gradient, there is a shift in the center of mass of the precipitates towards the high-temperature region. Thus, our study offers new insights into the phenomena of microstructure evolution in the presence of thermal gradient.

Abstract:The thermodynamic extremal principle was applied to model of diffusion-controlled phase-transformations in multi-component substitutional alloys, in which dissipations by interface migration and trans-interface diffusion were integrated for a sharp interface. In the modeling, a new concept of trans interface diffusion in two-steps, i.e. from the product phase to the interface and from the interface to the parent phase, was introduced, ascribing to which the model follows the Onsager's reciprocal relation. In contrast to the work of Svoboda et al. (2004) that considers only the interfacial dissipation by interface migration, non-equal jumps of chemical potentials across the interface are herein allowed. Applications to the Fe-Cr-Ni and Fe-Ni alloys showed that the model is able to describe accurately not only the kinetic processes of massive transformation and diffusive transformation but also the critical limit between them. Since the transformation direction is not a priori condition for model calculations, the model is of potential value in applications to the cases in which the migrating direction changes, e.g. cycle phase-transformations etc. (C) 2016 Acta Materialia Inc. Temperature fluctuations in mesoscopic systems

Abstract:We study temperature fluctuations in mesoscopic $N$-body systems undergoing non-equilibrium processes from the perspective of stochastic thermodynamics. By introducing a stochastic differential equation, we describe the evolution of the system's temperature during an isothermal process, with the noise term accounting for finite-size effects arising from random energy transfer between the system and the reservoir. Our analysis reveals that these fluctuations make the extensive quantities (in the thermodynamic limit) deviate from being extensive for consistency with the theory of equilibrium fluctuation. Moreover, we derive finite-size corrections to the Jarzynski equality, providing insights into how heat capacity influences such corrections. Also, our results indicate a possible violation of the principle of maximum work by an amount proportional to $N^{-1}$. Additionally, we examine the impact of temperature fluctuations in a finite-size quasi-static Carnot engine. We show that irreversible entropy production resulting from the temperature fluctuations of the working substance diminishes the average efficiency of the cycle as $\eta_{\rm{C}}-\left\langle \eta\right\rangle \sim N^{-1}$, highlighting the unattainability of the Carnot efficiency $\eta_{\rm{C}}$ for mesoscopic-scale heat engines even under the quasi-static limit

Abstract:We study the transformation behavior and microstructure evolution from thermoelastic to non-thermoelastic martensitic transformation by considering the coupling of volumetric strain and the transformation strain within a GinzburgLandau framework. The volume change associated with the transformation due to the coupling is demonstrated to be the essential physics controlling the transformation from thermoelastic to non-thermoelastic transformation. The characteristics of non-thermoelastic transformation, including the large residual strain, large thermal hysteresis and incomplete transformation gradually appear with increasing coupling strength. A materials descriptor for properties associated with a martensitic transformation is proposed based on insights from the model.
