Abstract:We propose a method to design bifunctional acoustic lens using acoustic metamaterials that possess separate functions at different directions. The proposed bifunctional acoustic lens can be implemented in practice with subwavelength unit cells exhibiting effective anisotropic parameters. With this methodology, we experimentally demonstrate an acoustic Luneburg-fisheye lens at operational frequencies from 6300 Hz to 7300 Hz. Additionally, a bifunctional acoustic square lens is proposed with different focal lengths for multi directions. This method paves the way to manipulating acoustic energy flows with functional lenses.

Abstract:There are significant challenges to design acoustic metasurface in the ultrasonic regime where the wavelength is small. Moreover, the routine design rule based on effective medium approximation is invalid for underwater ultrasound. Our recent development of metasurface provides a great opportunity to solve above-mentioned challenges and the results demonstrate the great potential to apply this metasurface in the field of ultrasonic focusing. Here, we presented a focusing metasurface lens with extreme simplicity (slot structure) and ultra-compact size (deep-subwavelength spacing and thickness). Instead of tuning the acoustic path length individually, we exploited the strong wave couplings between the deep-subwavelength-spaced units for the phase modulation. A microscopic coupled-wave theory was used to predict the phase profile, based on which the metasurface lens for ultrasonic focusing was optimized. Particularly, broadband focusing was also exhibited due to the non-resonant arrangement of the proposed metasurface lens. The numerical and experimental results agreed well with each other, effectively validating the feasibility of the proposed metasurface lens. The proposed approach provides a feasible avenue for the design of simple and ultra-compact ultrasonic lenses that would be suitable in various fields of ultrasonics.
Realization of broadband acoustic metamaterial lens with quasi-conformal mapping

Abstract:Recently, transformation acoustics has been widely recognized for its ability to convert the acoustic pressure field into desired spatial patterns, resulting in numerous functionalities with unique functionalities. Here, we propose and realize a two-dimensional flattened Luneburg lens using quasi-conformal mapping in the acoustic regime, allowing geometries with curved shapes to be converted into flat systems while the broadband and low-loss properties are preserved. Importantly, such an acoustic metamaterial lens is composed of purely isotropic materials that are easy to obtain via artificial structures. Our results may give rise to various applications, such as medical treatments and novel imaging systems.

Abstract:With the ability to focus and rotate the acoustic field in a given region while keeping the outside region unchanged, the acoustic concentrator and rotator has been developed for the versatile manipulations of acoustic wave. In this letter, we report the design of acoustic concentrator and rotator facilitated by linear coordinate transformation. Compared with the previous ones that have inhomogeneous parameter distributions, the designed devices are composed of several parts with homogeneous parameters, which can be achieved with the help of few homogeneous layered structures. Simulations are also performed to verify the functions of the designed device. The proposed acoustic concentrators and rotators would be useful in numerous applications such as acoustic sensing and communication.

Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.
Ultra-compact Reflective Metasurface for Wave Manipulation

Abstract:Recently, electromagnetic metasurfaces have witnessed a promising future for useful devices with extremely compact footprint. However, their mapping to acoustic regimes remains challenging because the acoustic wavelength is considerably larger than the optics, especially at low frequencies. We propose an ultra-compact metasurface that can manipulate the reflected waves upon plane waves incidences. Remarkably, the metasurface simply consists of a rigid plate perforated with deep-subwavelength grooves of varying depths. A theoretical formulation based on multiple-scattering and dynamical diffraction is established to address the underlying mechanism, and used to optimize metasurfaces for wave manipulation. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements are conducted on the designed sample, which are in good agreement and well predicted by the theory. This study provides a comprehensive guideline for the design of ultra-compact and planar acoustic reflective metasurface; moreover, the study may promise an additional avenue to integrate acoustic devices in practical applications.

Abstract:Fisheye lens and Luneburg lens are lenses with different refractive index distributions. Combination of two of them in an acoustic wave will pave way for special features in acoustic wave and simplify methods of focusing or defocusing acoustic energy. Here, we designed anisotropic acoustic metamaterials in sub wavelength unit cells and shaped their effective parameters to control acoustic wavefront and produce distinct refractive index distribution at each coordinate directions. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed structure in controlling acoustic waves and merging two different lenses to work in single device. Also proposed, is an acoustic bifunctional square lens with different focus points at each coordinate directions using the same method. This procedure opens up an avenue in acoustic wave to combine other lenses in single device and control acoustic propagation.

Abstract:The applications of acoustic focusing and acoustic asymmetric focusing (AAF) are severely constrained by the narrow frequency bandwidth. In this paper, we report broad bandwidth acoustic focusing lens and asymmetric acoustic focusing lens consisting of monolayer and dual-layer metamaterials, respectively. Additive manufacturing technology was utilized to fabricate the designed lens. Finite element analysis and experimental approaches are adopted to verify the performances of acoustic focusing and asymmetric acoustic focusing. The results demonstrate that the designed acoustic focusing lens can converge acoustic waves at the frequency from 4717 Hz to 7717 Hz. The excellent AAF effect can be realized at a large frequency range from 4717 Hz to 6717 Hz. The results of measurement are consistent well with the simulated ones. Besides, by changing the separation between the dual-layer metamaterials for the AAF lens, the focusing position can be controlled without changing the metamaterials structure. Our approach may offer an efficient method to design broadband acoustic focusing and AAF devices and promote the important applications in numerous practical fields, including acoustic absorption and noise reducing, acoustic energy harvesting, ultrasonic medicine and multifunctional materials.
Broadband and high-numerical-aperture sharp focusing for waterborne sound with metagrating-based lens

Abstract:Metalens with broadband and high-efficiency focusing functionality is desired in various underwater acoustic applications such as sonar and oceanography. Here we design and demonstrate a metagrating-based lens consisting of spatially sparse and wavelength-scale meta-atoms with optimized structures. With the help of grating diffraction analysis and intelligent optimization algorithm, the reflective metalens enables broadband and high-numerical-aperture focusing for waterborne sound over a 40 kHz-bandwidth for working frequency at 200 kHz. Full-wave numerical simulations unambiguously verify a sharp and high-efficiency focusing of sound wave intensity, with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) at the focal spot being smaller than 0.5λ and thus beating the Rayleigh-Abbe diffraction limit. Our work not only provides an intelligent design paradigm of high-performance metalens, but also presents a potential solution for the development of planar acoustic devices for high-resolution applications.

Abstract:Acoustic metamaterials have become a novel and effective way to control sound waves and design acoustic devices. In this study, we design a 3D acoustic metamaterial lens (AML) to achieve point-to-point acoustic communication in air: any acoustic source (i.e. a speaker) in air enclosed by such an AML can produce an acoustic image where the acoustic wave is focused (i.e. the field intensity is at a maximum, and the listener can receive the information), while the acoustic field at other spatial positions is low enough that listeners can hear almost nothing. Unlike a conventional elliptical reflective mirror, the acoustic source can be moved around inside our proposed AML. Numerical simulations are given to verify the performance of the proposed AML.

Abstract:A bi-functional metamaterial is proposed for acoustic and electromagnetic manipulation simultaneously by Qiang Cheng, Tie Jun Cui, and co-workers, in article number 1800161. Under the illumination of sound, large acoustic insulation is achieved owing to the resonant modes within the double membrane structure. In the meanwhile, polarization-dependent responses are generated for microwave by attaching anisotropic meta-atoms on the membrane. This scheme is especially beneficial for developing such bi-functional devices in the future.

Abstract:We propose a single-phase super lens with a low density that can achieve focusing of sound beyond the diffraction limit. The super lens has a star-shaped lattice structure made of steel that offers abundant resonances to produce abnormal dispersive effects as determined by negative parameter indices. Our analysis of the metamaterial band structure suggests that these star-shaped metamaterials have double-negative index properties, that can mediate these effects for sound in water. Simulations verify the effective focusing of sound by a single-phase solid lens with a spatial resolution of approximately 0.39 λ. This superlens has a simple structure, low density and solid nature, which makes it more practical for application in water-based environments.

Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces have enabled unprecedented control over acoustic waves, offering opportunities in areas such as holographic rendering, sound absorption, and acoustic communication. Despite the steady progress made in this field, most acoustic metasurface designs are passive in that they only provide static functionalities. Here, a reconfigurable active acoustic metalens is implemented to showcase scanning of the focus along arbitrary trajectories in free space with the help of a previously developed active acoustic metasurface platform. Each unit cell of the metasurface contains a cavity, whose size can be tuned continuously by a dynamic control system to adjust the phase of the reflected wave. While this work focuses on beam focusing, it could hold great promise for a wide range of applications including acoustic levitation and tweezers.

Abstract:We have proposed a two-dimensional acoustic Maxwell’s fish-eye lens by using the gradient-index metamaterials with space-coiling units. By adjusting the structural parameters of the units, the refractive index can be gradually varied, which is key role to design the acoustic fish-eye lens. As predicted by ray trajectories on a virtual sphere, the proposed lens has the capability to focus the acoustic wave irradiated from a point source at the surface of the lens on the diametrically opposite side of the lens. The broadband and low loss performance is further demonstrated for the lens. The proposed acoustic fish-eye lens is expected to have the potential applications in directional acoustic coupler or coherent ultrasonic imaging.

Abstract:Field transformation, as an extension of the transformation optics, provides a unique means for nonreciprocal wave manipulation, while the experimental realization remains a substantial challenge as it requires stringent material parameters of the metamaterials, e.g., purely nonreciprocal bianisotropic parameters. Here, we develop and demonstrate a nonreciprocal field transformation in a two-dimensional acoustic system, using an active metasurface that can independently control all constitutive parameters and achieve purely nonreciprocal Willis coupling. The field-transforming metasurface enables tailor-made field distribution manipulation, achieving localized field amplification by a predetermined ratio. The metasurface demonstrates the self-adaptive capability to various excitation conditions and can be extended to other geometric shapes. The metasurface also achieves nonreciprocal wave propagation for internal and external excitations, demonstrating a one-way acoustic device. The nonreciprocal field transformation not only extends the framework of the transformation theory for nonreciprocal wave manipulation but also holds great potential in applications such as ultrasensitive sensors and nonreciprocal communication.

Abstract:Acoustic lenses find applications in various areas ranging from ultrasound imaging to nondestructive testing. A compact-size and high-efficient planar acoustic lens is crucial to achieving miniaturization and integration, and should have deep implication for the acoustic field. However its realization remains challenging due to the trade-off between high refractive-index and impedance-mismatch. Here we have designed and experimentally realized the first ultrathin planar acoustic lens capable of steering the convergence of acoustic waves in three-dimensional space. A theoretical approach is developed to analytically describe the proposed metamaterial with hybrid labyrinthine units, which reveals the mechanism of coexistence of high refractive index and well-matched impedance. A hyperbolic gradient-index lens design is fabricated and characterized, which can enhance the acoustic energy by 15 dB at the focal point with very high transmission efficiency. Remarkably, the thickness of the lens is only approximately 1/6 of the operating wavelength. The lens can work within a certain frequency band for which the ratio between the bandwidth and the center frequency reaches 0.74. By tailoring the structure of the metamaterials, one can further reduce the thickness of the lens or even realize other acoustic functionalities, opening new opportunity for manipulation of low-frequency sounds with versatile potential.

Abstract:Acoustic metagratings (AMs) have provided diverse routes for sound modulations based on high-efficiency diffractions created by periodic supercell structures. The emergence of the extension of the generalized Snell's law (GSL), covering both acoustic diffractions and phase modulations, has promoted the design of the AMs with aperiodic phase profiles, which have a great potential in designing high-performance multifunctional devices. However, the realization of reflected aperiodic AMs and its associated multifunctional devices remain a challenge. To overcome this, we here theoretically design and experimentally demonstrate a class of reflected aperiodic AMs and multifunctional acoustic lenses. By using the extension of the GSL, we can overcome the limitations of the GSL (such as the phase gradient and the incident critical angle) and experimentally demonstrate theoretical predictions of sound reflections created by the aperiodic AMs with arbitrary phase gradients under a full-angle incidence. Additionally, we experimentally design a multifunctional reflected lens composed of two selected aperiodic AMs. Interestingly, by simply adjusting the incident angle of sound, we can realize the transformation between the beam splitting and the Bessel-like beam without changing the structure of the lens. Our work paves a way for modulating sound reflections and designing reflected multifunctional devices with promising applications.

Abstract:A major limitation of current acoustic metamaterials is that their acoustic properties are either locked into place once fabricated or only modestly tunable, tying them to the particular application for which they are designed. We present in this paper a design approach that yields active metamaterials whose physical structure is fixed, yet their local acoustic response can be changed almost arbitrarily and in real-time by configuring the digital electronics that control the metamaterial acoustic properties. We demonstrate experimentally this approach by designing a metamaterial slab configured to act as a very thin acoustic lens that manipulates differently three identical, consecutive pulses incident on the lens. Moreover, we show that the slab can be configured to implement simultaneously various roles, such as that of a lens and beam steering device. Finally, we show that the metamaterial slab is suitable for efficient second harmonic acoustic imaging devices capable to overcome the diffraction limit of linear lenses. These advantages demonstrate the versatility of this active metamaterial and highlight its broad applicability, in particular to acoustic imaging.

Abstract:Acoustic asymmetric focusing (AAF) has a great potential application in medical ultrasound imaging, focused ultrasound therapy, and nondestructive testing. The advancement of acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces has provided various mechanisms to design AAF lenses. However, due to the existence of a certain difficulty in realizing sound focusing and asymmetric transmission simultaneously, the realization of the AAF lens with a broad bandwidth and an integrative planar structure still remains a challenge. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate an integrative planar AAF lens based on a type of mode-conversion meta-atom composed of two types of phased unit cells with a phase difference of π and a step waveguide. The meta-atom can realize the conversion between the zero-order and first-order waves and asymmetric sound transmission, which arises from the phase modulation and the cutoff frequency of the first-order wave, respectively. Based on the proposed mode-conversion meta-atoms, we design a broadband AAF lens with high performance, in which its fractional bandwidth can reach about 0.19 and the focus size is only about 0.38λ. The proposed mode-conversion meta-atom and its associated AAF lens provide diverse routes for designing asymmetric multi-functional sound devices with promising applications.
