Abstract:<p>Metamaterials exhibit properties beyond those exhibited by conventional materials in conventional scenarios. These have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally at length. In many cases the underpinning physical understanding of metamaterials has greatly preceded our ability to manufacture constituent structures. However, the development of additive manufacturing techniques gives new possibilities for the fabrication of complex metamaterial structures, many of which cannot be realised through conventional fabrication methods. The literature to date contains contributions from a diverse group of researchers from the physical sciences, mathematics, and manufacturing technology in the creation of metamaterials for electromagnetic, acoustic and mechanical applications. It is proposed that additive manufacturing holds the key to realise the capabilities of this vibrant research community and permit the creation of new paradigms in fundamental structures but also exploitation through application. For this purpose, a literature review is presented which identifies key advances in metamaterials alongside additive manufacturing and proposes new opportunities for researchers to work together through intra/inter disciplinary research to realise structures which exhibit extraordinary behaviour(s). This review represents a comprehensive account of the state-of-the-art in the production of such metamaterials using additive manufacturing methods and highlights areas, which, based on trends observed in the literature, are worthy of further research and require a coordinated effort on behalf of the afore mentioned disciplines in order to advance the state-of-the-art.</p>

Abstract:The emergence of additive manufacturing (AM) facilitates the fabrication of lightweight mechanical metamaterials characterized by intricate geometrical features. Here, we focus on the contributions of microstructural and structural design to the significant performance enhancement of metamaterials. Cubic plate-lattices featuring spherical holes were produced using laser powder bed fusion. Different from commonly used optimization of AM parameters to change the thermal histories and the resulting properties, we employ a simple strategy inspired by the crystallographic and AM features—tilting the build orientation. Compared to the normal build orientation, the tilted build orientation converts the printed microstructure of the plate-lattices from (100)-dominated to (111)- and (101)-dominated crystallographic texture and significantly refines the grain size, leading to remarkable 30% and 10% increase of compressive strength and strain in printed plate-lattices. For further tailoring the performance of metamaterials, we integrated a wavy plate topology design to improve the isotropy of properties and increase the impact attenuation. Our work paves the way to optimize additively manufactured metamaterials by combining microstructural and structural designs.

Abstract:Metamaterials are featured by artificial composite structures with exotic properties, which process promising application potentials in various areas. However, the manufacturing of metamaterials faces great challenges due to the structural complexity, accuracy requirement, and small scale. Additive manufacturing (AM), as a layer-by-layer technique, shows intrinsic advantages in the fabrication of metamaterials. This paper extensively reviews the current state on how and to what extent AM techniques are adopted for metamaterials fabrication, in which the metamaterials are mainly classified into mechanical, acoustic and electromagnetic types. More importantly, the challenges and research opportunities are discussed for AM fabrication of metamaterials, with focus on high precision, multi-structural and multi-material, topology optimization, support structure, anisotropy and heterogeneity, residual stresses and application realization. It is expected that with further innovative solutions being developed to bridge the research gaps, the industries will become more confident to adopt metamaterials in devices and systems for critical applications.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials can be defined as a class of architected materials that exhibit unprecedented mechanical properties derived from designed artificial architectures rather than their constituent materials. While macroscale and simple layouts can be realized by conventional top-down manufacturing approaches, many of the sophisticated designs at various length scales remain elusive, due to the lack of adequate manufacturing methods. Recent progress in additive manufacturing (AM) has led to the realization of a myriad of novel metamaterial concepts. AM methods capable of fabricating microscale architectures with high resolution, arbitrary complexity, and high feature fidelity have enabled the rapid development of architected metamaterials and drastically reduced the design-computation and experimental-validation cycle. This paper first provides a detailed review of various topologies based on the desired mechanical properties, including stiff, strong, and auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) metamaterials, followed by a discussion of the AM technologies capable of fabricating these metamaterials. Finally, we discuss current challenges and recommend future directions for AM and mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:This paper presents several demonstrators that utilize advanced additive manufacturing (AM) to rapidly prototype antennas, RF components for microwave and mm-wave applications. Antenna substrates with tailored permittivity; lenses, reflectarray with locally varied dielectric properties; and metamaterials can be fabricated by using extrusion based AM processes such as fused filament fabrication method to realize high gain antenna systems with low material cost, time-saving and low impact to the environment.

Abstract:As a novel structural material proposed by topology optimization, metamaterials present unusual properties, such as negative Poisson's ratio, negative indexofrefraction and so on. Metamaterials have potential application in the aspect of wave controlling and stealth. Therefore, it has aroused great interests in the world. Additive manufacturing technology, also called 3D printing technology, is suitable to make structures with complicated geometries. It is a high geometric freedom to fabricate stealth metamaterials via additive manufacturing technology,which provides technical support for the wide applications.The design of structure and the theory of stealth are both mentioned based on the basic theory of metamaterial. Moreover, a variety of additive manufacturing processes for the preparation of stealth metamaterials, such as light curing method, fusion deposition method, laser selective sintering / melting method are described in detail in the present paper. Problems, for instance, the staircase effect, raw material adhesion, thermal diffusivity, dimensional accuracy and roughness occurred in the fabrication of additive manufacturing metamaterials are discussed in order to provide references for the follow-up researchers.

Abstract:Metamaterial structure has important scientific research value and extensive application prospect in military stealth and camouflage, communication, security and medical imaging owing to the ability of manipulating the phase and propagation mode of electromagnetic wave and acoustic wave precisely. The research is one of the hotspots in the field of international academic and engineering. Generally speaking, the research on metamaterial structure in the world has greatly promoted its development of lightness, broadband, high performance and practicality. However, the interdisciplinary research of manufacturing technology and electromagnetics, acoustics, physics, materials and other disciplines should be further focused. It is necessary to accelerate the exploration of the way of manufacturing metamaterial structure in a large scale, and promote its rapid development towards application. In this paper, the application status of additive manufacturing technology in manufacturing metamaterial structure is summarized, and the research progress of metamaterial structure functional devices is discussed. We also discuss and prospect the future development trend about metamaterial structure.

Abstract:Metamaterials with multiple anisotropic properties have strong potential in medicine, military, and civil engineering applications. However, previous studies have been limited to the design and fabrication of polymers, metals, and alloys, which can allow the retention of the structure at low temperatures. Metamaterials that operate at high temperatures or over large temperature ranges need to be developed. In this study, 3D-architected ceramic metamaterials with programmable thermal expansion, which can be used in high-temperature or large-temperature-range environments, were designed, fabricated, and characterized. First, three multi ceramic quadrangular-pyramid-structured metamaterials with programmable thermal expansion behaviors were proposed and designed based on ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics. The design mechanism and programmable range of thermal expansion were analyzed. Then, 3D-architected ceramic metamaterials with negative (-10 x 10(-6)/degrees C), zero (0 x 10(-6)/degrees C), and positive (+10 x 10(-6)/degrees C) thermal expansion were designed and fabricated through stereolithography additive manufacturing. The manufactured 3D-architected multi-ceramic meta materials with programmable thermal expansion behaviors were analyzed using a digital image correlation (DIC) method. The results showed that the experimentally measured values were in good agreement with the theoretical values. The obtained findings pave the way for the application of 3D-architected multi-ceramic metamaterials.

Abstract:<p>The concept of metamaterials originates from the proposal of left-hand materials with negative refractive index, followed by which, varieties of metamaterials with kinds of fantastic properties that cannot be found in natural materials, such as zero/negative Poisson's ratio, electromagnetic/acoustic/thermal cloaking effect, etc., were come up with. According to their application fields, the metamaterials are roughly classified into four categories, electromagnetic metamaterials, acoustic metamaterials, thermal metamaterials, and mechanical metamaterials. By designing structures and arranging the distribution of materials with different physical parameters, the function of metamaterials can be realized in theory. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology provides a more direct and efficient way to achieve a sample of metamaterial and experiment verification due to the great advantages in fabricating complex structures. In this review, we introduce the typical metamaterials in different application situations and their design methods. In particular, we are focused on the fabrication of metamaterials and the application status of AM technology in them. Furthermore, we discuss the limits of present metamaterials in the aspect of design method and the disadvantages of existing AM technology, as well as the development tendency of metamaterials.</p>

Abstract:Broadband microwave absorption as a hot research topic plays important roles on electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic radiation protection and radar detection disguise. However, traditional molding method is difficult to fabricate large-size curving structures for broadband microwave absorption. Herein, the material extrusion with high-speed printing process was effective to manufacture large-size metastructures for broadband microwave absorption. The polylactic acid was mixed and extruded with nano pyrolytic carbon in high temperature to manufacture functional filaments with high dielectric loss. The printed metastructure integrated with 0.5 mm quartz fiber reinforced composite (QFRC) achieved -10 dB broadband microwave absorption in 3.03-18 GHz and effective load bearing performance in tensile and flexural tests. Severe impedance mismatch brought by QFRC was overcome by appropriate structure design and high-speed printing technique. The proposed design-manufacturing closed loop is a promising approach to fabricate aircraft skin with broadband microwave absorption performance and suitable aerodynamic properties for heavy unmanned aerial drones.

Abstract:Phononic crystal (PnCs) is one of the metamaterials focusing on the wave controls. The fabrication of this metamaterial is the key for its further industrial applications. Due to the advantage on the direct combination of computer-aided design, additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the most efficient manufacturing technologies for the fabrication of this wave controlling metamaterial. Here we reviewed the recent applications of AM on the fabrication of the wave-controlling metamaterials. The new features generated from the printing of the metallic parts like quick temperature changes in heating and cooling and re-melting and reheating were introduced. The theoretical and numerical developments on the printing of alloys were combined with the existing knowledge on metallurgy for the explanations of the changes of mechanical properties. The variations of mechanical properties, the residual distortions, and the property-oriented design of AM were introduced with the focus on the shift of band gap characteristics from the theoretical design in the wave-controlling metamaterials. The relationship between the process parameters and the structural performance of the wave-controlling metamaterials and the mechanical properties of the AM objects were mainly summarized.

Abstract:Metamaterials are artificial materials with extraordinary physical properties that natural materials do not possess. The continuous development of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies offers new possibilities for fabrication of complex metamaterial structures, and which can achieve excellent properties that cannot be achieved by conventional methods. To this end, this review collected recent research results on the design, fabrication and property testing and classification of metallic metamaterials mentioned in the literature, and further elaborated the application prospects of metal metamaterials to provide a reference for future engineering applications. In addition, there are also some difficulties in manufacturing metallic metamaterials, such as the fusion problem of multiple materials, which is noteworthy. In order to better understand the mechanical behavior of metamaterials under more complex loads, more research should be performed, including experiments and simulations.

Abstract:Metamaterials are composite materials that have artificially designed structures and exhibit extraordinary physical properties that natural materials do not have. The research on metamaterials conducted by the authors includes: the preparation of permeable steel metamaterials by laser-selective melting 3D printing technology; efficient processing technology for non-spreadable surface and ceramic tip splitting deep cavity inner surface functional structure; folded sandwich composite molding process, and multi-layer programmable electromagnetic metamaterial integrated potting molding technology, realized the six-layer structure with flexible circuit in a set of mold integrated potting molding. The proposed forming and processing techniques have been tested in practice for several typical metamaterial structures, and can provide a reference for researchers in the field of metamaterials.

Abstract:In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and materials as well as design possibilities to manufacture metamaterials for a variety of biomedical applications, of which many are inspired by nature itself. It is described that how new AM technologies (such as continuous liquid interface production and multiphoton polymerization) and new developments in more mature AM technologies (such as powder bed fusion, stereolithography and extrusion-based bioprinting) have led to more precise, efficient, and personalized biomedical components. Extrusion-based bioprinting, specifically, is a revolutionary topic creating intricate models with remarkable mechanical compatibility of metamaterials, such as negative/zero Poisson's ratio and stress elimination for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. By exploiting a variety of designs for porous structures (such as truss, triply periodic minimal surface, and plant/animal-inspired and functionally graded lattices), AM made bioactive bone implants, artificial tissues and organs are made for tissue replacement purposes. The material palette of the AM metamaterials has also become very diverse nowadays ranging from metals and alloys (such as titanium and cobalt-chromium alloys) to polymers (like biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)) which could be even integrated within bioactive bioceramics. These advancements are driving the progress of biomedical technology, improving human health and quality of life for future generations.

Abstract:The manufacturing of 3D and conformal metamaterials remains a major challenge. The projection micro-stereolithography 3D printing technology combined with the liquid metal filling method is employed here to fabricate the metamaterials, which are characterized with embedded features that can effectively protect the metal resonance layer from external influence, and integrated molding of macro-micro structures and function-structure. To demonstrate the robustness and flexibility of the proposed method, three types of metamaterials are fabricated: 3D orthogonal split-ring resonator metamaterial, bionic compound eye conformal metamaterial, and a five-layer broadband conformal metamaterial in the form of hemispherical moth-eye, which are costly, tedious, and time consuming in conventional fabrication methods. And the layout of the filling channel is optimized and the polydimethylsiloxane coating post-treatment process is applied to smooth the surface roughness caused by the staircase effect of 3D printing to improve the transmission performance of metamaterial devices. The transmission properties are measured using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system and the experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper makes metamaterial manufacture no longer limited to complex structures, which effectively expands the application range of metamaterials.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) represents a set of manufacturing processes that create complex 3D parts out of polymers, metals, and ceramics. AM of metals and ceramics is widely used to produce parts for aerospace, automotive, and medical applications. At the micro- and nano-scales, AM is poised to become the enabling technology for efficient 3D microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), 3D micro-battery electrodes, 3D electrically small antennae, micro-optical components, and photonics. Today, the minimum feature size for most commercially available metal and ceramic AM is limited to ~20-50 μm. Currently, no established processes can reliably produce complex 3D metal and ceramic parts with sub-micron features. In this thesis, we first demonstrate a nanoscale metal AM process that can produce ~300 nm features out of nanocrystalline, nanoporous nickel using synthesized hybrid organic-inorganic materials, two-photon lithography, and pyrolysis. We study microstructure and mechanical properties of as-fabricated nickel architectures and compare their structural strength to established AM processes. We then show how this process can be extended to other metals and metalloids, including Mg, Ge, Si, and Ti. This study extends further into nanoscale AM of transparent, high refractive index materials for micro-optics and photonic crystals. We develop an AM process to 3D print fully dense nanocrystalline rutile titanium dioxide (TiO₂) with feature dimensions down to ~120 nm. We carefully study and model the relationship between feature dimensions and process parameters to achieve a Finally, a microscale AM process of titanium dioxide is demonstrated for photocatalytic water treatment. We show how synthesized hybrid organic-inorganic materials can be applied for stereolithography to print TiO₂ architectures with 100 μm features. We use the developed 3D printing process to investigate the effect of 3D architecture on the efficiency of photocatalytic water treatment. This work establishes a versatile and efficient pathway to create three-dimensional nano-architected metals and ceramics and to investigate their properties for applications in 3D MEMS, micro-optics, photonics, and photocatalysis.
