Abstract:Background Cataracts are the main cause of poor vision and blindness worldwide. The effects of statin administration on cataracts remain debated. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis to determine whether statin use affects the risk of cataracts. Methods and Results We performed a systematic search of the electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library through January 2016. Weighted averages were reported as relative risk values with 95% CIs. Statistical heterogeneity scores were assessed with the standard Cochran's Q test and the I2 statistic. A total of 6 cohort studies, 6 case–control studies, and 5 randomized controlled trials, together involving more than 313 200 patients, were included in our study. The pooled estimates of cohort studies indicated that the use of statins moderately increases the risk of cataracts (relative risk, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.01–1.25). The pooled estimates of case–control studies (relative risk=1.10, 95% CI, 0.99–1.23) and randomized controlled trials (relative risk, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.72–1.10) indicated that the use of statins does not increase the risk of cataracts. The sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of the results. Heterogeneity was found among the cohort and case–control studies. Conclusions Based on the present meta‐analysis of these studies, we could only conclude that there is no clear evidence showing that statin use increases the risk of cataracts. The most likely case is that there is no association between statin use and cataracts. Because of the considerable benefits of statins in cardiovascular patients, this issue should not deter their use.

Abstract:We aimed to assess whether vitamin C prevents or slows progression of age-related cataracts. We identified studies by searching EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science up to April 2017. Studies were included if they assessed relationship between vitamin C and risk of age-related cataract. We evaluated the quality of case-control and cohort studies using Newcastle-Ottawa scoring system, and cross-sectional studies using Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality scoring system. Risk ratios (RRs) and odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to measure pooled data. A total of 25 studies (11 cohort studies, 6 case-control studies and 8 cross-sectional studies) were included in this meta-analysis. Overall RR of age-related cataracts comparing the highest and lowest levels of vitamin C intake was 0.8 (95% CI: 0.66 to 0.97) for cohort studies. Subgroup analysis according to types of cataracts showed that vitamin C has a protective effect on nuclear cataracts (RR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.32 to 0.81). A similar protective effect emerged from case-control studies (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.47 to 0.79). As for serum ascorbate, the pooled data of cross-sectional studies showed that higher serum ascorbate has a protective effect on age-related cataracts (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.63 to 0.83). Higher vitamin C intake and serum ascorbate may bring benefits to prevent age-related cataracts, especially nuclear cataracts. For prevention of cataracts, it is recommend older people try to increase vitamin C intake.
Smoking And Risk Of Age-Related Cataract: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:PURPOSE. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between smoking and age-related cataract (ARC).METHODS. Eligible studies were identified via computer searches and reviewing the reference lists of the key articles. The summary relative risk ratio (RR) or odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Study-specific risk estimates were pooled using a random-effects model. Meta-regression to assess heterogeneity by several covariates and subgroup analysis on ARC types were performed.RESULTS. A total of 13 prospective cohort and eight case-control studies met our inclusion criteria. Ever smoking was statistically significantly associated with increased risk of ARC among cohort studies (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.23-1.62) and case-control studies (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.20-2.07). In subgroup analysis, ever smoking exhibited a positive relationship with nuclear cataract (NC; OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.46-1.89) and a marginally significant relationship with posterior subcapsular cataract (OR 1.43, 95% CI 0.99-2.07) in cohort studies. Similar results were found in case-control studies (NC OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.47-2.36; posterior subcapsular cataract OR 1.60, 95% CI 0.97-2.65). Current smokers were at higher risk of ARC than past smokers. No association between smoking and cortical cataract was observed.CONCLUSIONS. The overall current literature suggests that smoking was associated with increased risk of ARC, especially NC. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Age-related cataract (ARC) is the leading cause of blindness in the world. The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and risk of ARC is controversial across observational studies. We therefore performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the association between BMI and risk of ARC. METHODS: Eligible studies were identified through an electronic search of PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. We pooled study-specific relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to determine the risk of ARC associated with BMI categories and per 1 kg/m² increase in BMI. RESULTS: A total of 17 prospective cohort studies were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled RRs of ARC were 1.08 (95% CI, 1.01-1.16) for overweight and 1.19 (95% CI, 1.10-1.28) for obesity compared with normal weight. These findings were robust when stratified by sex, sample source, outcome types and confounders, while significantly differed by assessment of BMI and ARC, and duration of follow-up. The summary RR suggested that per 1 kg/m² increase in BMI was associated with a 2% increased risk of ARC (RR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.03). Pooled estimates of RRs consistently indicated a trend for subjects with a high BMI to develop posterior subcapsular cataracts (RR 1.19, 95% CI 1.06-1.35, for overweight; RR 1.50, 95% CI 1.24-1.81, for obesity; RR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.06, per 1 kg/m² increase in BMI) other than nuclear or cortical cataracts. CONCLUSIONS: The overall findings suggest that elevated BMI may increase the risk of ARC, especially posterior subcapsular cataracts. Further trials are needed to investigate the effect of weight reduction in obese populations on the risk of ARC.

Abstract:PurposeTo evaluate the relationship between gout and age-related cataracts (ARCs).MethodsA comprehensive literature search of the PubMed and Web of Science databases was conducted to identify papers on the association between gout and cataract risk that had been published between February 1991 and January 2017. Pooled relative risks (RRs) or odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The random-effects model was used instead of the fixed-effects model when heterogeneity was identified, as indicated by a Cochran's Q statistic P-value <0.10 or I2 index score >50%.ResultsA total of 3 cross-sectional studies and 3 case-control studies were included in the meta-analysis. Gout was significantly associated with increased odds of ARCs (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.27-1.84). In the subgroup analysis, gout exhibited positive associations with the odds of posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSCs, OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.06-2.70) and cortical cataracts (CCs, OR 1.39, 95% CI: 1.06-1.81). However, no association was identified between gout and the odds of nuclear cataracts.ConclusionsThe current literature suggested that gout may be associated with increased odds of ARCs, especially PSCs and CCs. Further efforts should be made to confirm these findings and clarify the effect of gout and gout medications on the development of cataracts.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Cataract is the major cause of blindness across the world. Many epidemiologic studies indicated that hypertension might play an important role in the development of cataract, while others not. We therefore conducted this meta-analysis to determine the relationship between risk of cataract and hypertension. METHODS:Retrieved studies on the association of hypertension with cataract risk were collected from PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library during June 2014 and were included into the final analysis according to the definite inclusion criteria. Odds ratio (OR) or risk ratio (RR) were pooled with 95% confidence interval (CI) to evaluate the relationship between hypertension and cataract risk. Subgroup analyses were carried out on the basis of cataract type, race and whether studies were adjusted for main components of metabolic syndrome (MS). RESULTS:The final meta-analysis included 25 studies (9 cohort, 5 case-control and 11 cross-sectional) from 23 articles. The pooled results showed that cataract risk in populations with hypertension significantly increased among cohort studies (RR 1.08; 95% CI: 1.05-1.12) and case-control or cross-sectional studies (OR 1.28; 95% CI: 1.12-1.45). This association was proved to be true among both Mongolians and Caucasians, and the significance was not altered by the adjustment of main components of MS. Subgroup analysis on cataract types indicated that an increased incidence of posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) resulted among cohort studies (RR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.03-1.46) and cross-sectional/case-control studies (OR 1.23; 95% CI: 1.09-1.39). No association of hypertension with risk of nuclear cataract was found. CONCLUSIONS:The present meta-analysis suggests that hypertension increases the risk of cataract, especially PSC. Further efforts should be made to explore the potential biological mechanisms.

Abstract:Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. The use of certain drugs is one of the risk factors for lens opacities, such as glucocorticoids and chlorpromazine. We reviewed new studies regarding the relationship between cataract formation and drugs that have become more widely used in recent years, such as statins, anti-epileptic drugs, antidepressants, tamoxifen, amiodarone, eltrombopag, isotretinoin, nifedipine and quetiapine. We hope this review could offer suggestions and reference for clinical doctors.
Association between vitamin D level and cataract: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: The association between serum vitamin D level and cataract remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the association between vitamin D level and cataract. Methods: In this study, articles in the PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases were searched up to 30 August 2023 and 626 articles were screened. Four studies involving a total of 10,928 subjects with cataract and 10,117 control subjects met the inclusion criteria. Results: Decreased serum vitamin D level was associated with higher incidence of cataract (P = 0.047; MD: -4.87; 95%CI: [-9.67, -0.07]). In the subgroup analysis by sex, a significant association was found between serum vitamin D level and cataract in both male (P = 0.01, MD: -2.15,95%CI: [-3.83, -0.46]) and female (P < 0.01; MD: -6.67,95%CI: [-8.20, -5.14]).In the subgroup analysis by the types of cataract, significant association was found between serum vitamin D level and nuclear (P < 0.01; MD: -10.48; 95%CI: [-12.72, -8.24]) and posterior subcapsular cataract (P = 0.02; MD: -6.05; 95%CI: [-11.30, -0.80]) but not in cortical cataract (P = 0.14; MD: -6.74; 95%CI: [-15.70, 2.22]). Conclusion: This meta-analysis revealed potential association between serum vitamin D level and cataract, more significant in female, and the subtypes of nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract.
The risk of dementia or cognitive impairment in patients with cataracts: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether cataract disease is associated with the risk of developing dementia or cognitive impairment. Methods: A systematic search of the literature in PubMed, the Extracts Database (Embase), the Cochrane Library and the Web of Science databases was performed from the inception data of each database until 1 September 2022. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness and reliability of the overall findings. All extracted data were statistically analyzed using Stata software v.16.0. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and the Egger test. Results: There were 11 publications included in this study, which consisted of 489,211participants, spanning 10 countries from 2012 to 2022. Aggregation suggested that cataracts were associated with cognitive impairment (odds ratio [OR] = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.21-1.43; I 2 = 45.4.%; p = 0.000). The presence of cataracts is significantly associated with an increased risk of developing all-cause dementia (relative risk [RR] = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.08-1.26; I2 = 0.0%; p = 0.000). In subgroup analyses, having cataracts may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.28; 95% CI: 1.13-1.45; I2 = 0.0%; p = 0.000) and vascular dementia (HR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.06-1.73; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.015). The data from the Egger's test showed no significant evidence of publication bias. Conclusions: Cataracts are associated with the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, and vascular dementia.
Association between long-term statin use and cataract surgery: a nationwide study on 505 105 cataract surgery patients

Abstract:Aims To assess the association between statin use and cataract surgery according to different statin treatment durations in patients with different cardiovascular risk profiles. Methods and results We performed a nested case–control study using Danish registries, covering the period from 1 January 1996 to 31 December 2020. We defined cases as surgically treated cataract patients, matched in a 1:1 ratio by sex and age with controls not undergoing cataract surgery. The exposure of interest was statin use in different durations (1, 5 and 10 years) compared with never use of statins. Conditional logistic regression provided adjusted HRs and corresponding 95% CIs in subgroups defined by established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and individuals without these comorbidities. We identified 505 150 cataract surgery cases and found no increased HR of cataract surgery with statin treatment at any duration in any of the subgroups with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hypertension. Conclusion Our findings do not support a possible association between long-term statin use and cataract in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hypertension. Although we found an association between statin use and cataract in individuals without these comorbidities, increasing durations of statin use did not yield higher cataract surgery rates.

Abstract:Background. With the growth and aging of population, the incidence of prostate cancer will increase year by year, which is bound to bring greater economic burden to the society. There has been greater interest in the anticancer effects of statin in recent years. It is controversial whether statin use is associated with the risk of prostate cancer (PCa). Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review to explore the effects of statin use and their duration and cumulative dose on the overall incidence of PCa. Method. The study was conducted according to the latest guidelines for PRISMA 2020. We searched PubMed and other databases for studies about the association of statin use with the risk of incident prostate cancer between January 1, 1990, and April 11, 2022. Two independent researchers extracted data and evaluated the quality of the studies. R x64 4.1.2 and random-effects model were used for data statistics. Relative risk (RR) and odds ratio (OR) effective values with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were used to assess the main results. Results. The results of 6 RCT and 26 cohort studies showed that statins did not significantly associate with the incidence of PCa (RR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.82–1.08). The similar results were obtained from 9 case-control studies (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.99–1.07). However, statins were associated with a lower risk of Pca (RR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.28–0.70) when the cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) was high. Using statins for more than five years could be associated with a reduced incidence of Pca (RR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.23–0.97). There was a significant heterogeneity in these studies (RCT and cohort study: I2 = 98%, P < 0.01; case-control study: I2 = 72%, P < 0.01). Conclusion. We concluded that statins had a neutral association with the overall risk of PCa. High cDDD and long duration were associated with a lower risk of PCa.

Abstract:Background: Cataract is one of the most prevalent causes of blindness worldwide. Whilst surgery is the primary treatment for cataracts, it is not always an available option, particularly in developing countries. Non-surgical methods of treatment would increase treatment availability for more patients. Several studies have investigated how topical application of oxysterols, such as lanosterol, may break down aggregated proteins and restore lens transparency. However, the results are conflicting and inconclusive. Aim: In this study, we focus on combining genetic evidence for associations between lanosterol related genetic variation and cataract to explore whether lanosterol is a potentially suitable drug treatment option. Method: Using data from 45,449 available cataract cases from the UK Biobank, with participant ages ranging from 40–69, we conducted a genetic association study (GWAS) to assess the risk of cataract. Cataract cases were defined using diagnostic and operation codes. We focused on genetic variants in the lanosterol synthase gene region. We also compared our results with previously published genetic associations of phytosterol-to-lanosterol ratios. Finally, we performed a genetic risk score analysis to test the association between lanosterol within the cholesterol synthesis pathway and the risk of cataract. Results: No statistically significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associations with cataract were observed in the gene region of lanosterol synthase at a multiple testing adjusted significance threshold of p < 0.05/13. The comparison between cataract risk and genetic association of 8 phytosterol-to-lanosterol GWAS results also showed no evidence to support lanosterol's protective properties for cataract risk. No statistically significant association was found between the lanosterol within the cholesterol synthesis pathway genetic risk score and cataract outcomes (OR = 1.002 p = 0.568). Conclusion: There was no evidence observed for genetic associations between lanosterol and cataract risk. Our results do not support lanosterol's potential role in treating cataracts. Further research may be needed to address the effect of lanosterol on specific cataract subtypes.

Recent Patents on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery

Abstract:Background: Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is a public health problem around the world. Several studies have investigated the association between statin use and the risk of HCC, however, more studies are needed in this field. Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the relationship between statin use and HCC risk. Methods: Systematic searches of Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, Science Direct, and Embase were conducted for studies published between 1980 and September 2023. Metaanalyses were performed using Stata 15 with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The search retrieved 8,125 articles, of which 40 were included in the meta-analysis after applying eligibility criteria. The total sample was 5,732,948 participants, including 68,698 HCC cases. Statin use was associated with a 44% lower risk of HCC compared to non-use (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.50–0.63, p < 0.001). The RR was 0.54 (0.42-0.69) in American countries, 0.52 (0.44-0.62) in Asian countries, and 0.63 (0.48-0.84) in European countries. The RR was 0.50 (0.42-0.60) in studies with a mean age <50 years and 0.61 (0.53-0.70) in studies with a mean age ≥50 years. No evidence of publication bias was found (Begg’s test p = 0.718). Conclusion: This meta-analysis found statin use is associated with a significantly lower HCC risk. Statins may be a promising preventive intervention against HCC

Abstract:3554 Background: Statins are frequently used for the control of hyperlipidemia. Statins have multiple anti-cancer properties and may be associated with lower CRC risks among their users. This study tries to go a step further and explores whether statin use affects the prognosis of curatively resected CRC. Methods: We established a population cohort with patients (age ≥ 40 y) who were diagnosed as having stage I or II CRC from 2004 to 2008 and received curative surgery from the database of Taiwan Cancer Registry. Data of medication prescription and co-morbidities were retrieved from the database of National Health Insurance, Taiwan. Regular statin use was defined as taking statins for > 180 days within the observation period from one year before the cancer diagnosis to one year afterward. The database of National Death Registry was used for survival outcomes. Another similar cohort consisting of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was used for comparison. Results: In total, 10762 patients with CRC were enrolled; 891 (8%) patients were regular stain users, 812 (8%) patients took statins but were not regular users, and 9059 (84%) patients never used statins. Regular statin users, compared to never users, were more likely to be female (p < 0.001), older (p < 0.001), have stage I disease (p < 0.001) and co-morbidities such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and renal disease. Adjuvant therapy was less frequently administered in regular statin users. In univariate analysis, cancer-specific survival (CSS) of regular stating users was significantly longer than that of never users (5-y CSS, 87% vs. 84%, p = 0.022), but overall survival (OS) was not significantly different (5-y OS, 80% vs. 77%, p = 0.156). In multivariate analysis adjusting for age, gender, stage, adjuvant therapy, co-morbidities, and the use of aspirin, regular stating use was an independent predictor both for better CSS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.72, p < 0.001) and for better OS (HR 0.71, p< 0.001). In contrast, no associations were found between statin use and CSS or OS in the HCC comparison cohort. The Effects Of Postmenopausal Hormone Use On Cataract: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Many observational studies assessed the relationship between postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and risk of cataract development, but the reported results were controversial. The aim of present meta-analysis was to evaluate the association of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy with risk of cataract development.Methods: The eligible observational studies, including cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies, were identified by searching PubMed and Embase during March of 2013. Either a fixed-or a random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled odds ratio (OR) with its 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Subgroup analysis on cataract types was performed.Results: A total of four cohort and five case-control or cross-sectional studies were finally included into this meta-analysis. Overall, a significant decreased risk of developing any type of cataract was found in ever HRT group as compared with non-HRT group among cohort studies (OR 0.83; 95% CI: 0.71,0.97) and case-control or cross-sectional studies (OR 0.74; 95% CI: 0.59,0.93). Subgroup analysis on cataract types determined that the significantly decreased risk of nuclear cataract in current HRT group (OR 0.72; 95% CI: 0.61,0.85) and also a critically reduced risk of nuclear cataract in ever HRT group (OR 0.80; 95% CI: 0.64,1.01) were found among case-control or cross-sectional studies, as compared with non-HRT group. No association of HRT with risk of cortical and posterior subcapsular cataract was observed.Conclusions: The results of present meta-analysis indicate that postmenopausal hormone use may play a protective role in cataract development.

Association Between Dietary Carbohydrate Intake and Dietary Glycemic Index and Risk of Age-Related Cataract: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:PURPOSE:To assess the association of dietary carbohydrate intake and dietary glycemic index (GI), and risk of age-related cataract (ARC), and quantitatively estimate their dose-response relationships.METHODS:We searched Medline, the Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Science Citation Index, ISI Web of Knowledge, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases before October 2013. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed study quality. The random-effect model was used to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs). Dose-response analyses, subgroup analyses based on ARC subtypes, heterogeneity, and publication bias assessment were also carried out.RESULTS:Seven studies were included in our meta-analysis. The pooled ORs of ARC for the highest versus the lowest category of carbohydrate intake and GI were 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.38) and 1.15 (95% CI: 1.00-1.32), respectively. Further subgroup analyses based on ARC subtypes suggested a marginally significant association between higher carbohydrate intake and cortical cataract risk (OR: 1.37, 95% CI: 0.99-1.90), and a statistically significant association between higher GI and nuclear cataract risk (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.03-1.46). In addition, a significant dose-response relationship was observed between carbohydrate intake and the risk of cortical cataract.CONCLUSIONS:Our results indicate that higher dietary carbohydrate quantity and GI may be associated with the risk of cortical and nuclear cataract, respectively. The results should be interpreted cautiously and more studies are warranted to clarify this issue.
Association Between Statin Use and Open-angle Glaucoma in Hyperlipidemia Patients: A Taiwanese Population-based Case-control Study

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the association between statin use and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) risk in hyperlipidemia patients.We used the research database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance program to conduct a population-based case-control study. A total of 1276 patients with newly diagnosed OAG were identified from 2004 to 2011. Controls comprised of 12,760 patients without glaucoma and were frequency-matched for age, sex, history of diabetes mellitus, and year of hyperlipidemia diagnosis at a 1:10 ratio. Accumulated defined daily doses (DDDs) of statins prescribed during follow-up were calculated. Average statin use was calculated as the sum of DDDs divided by the duration from the initial statin prescription date to the index date (per year), and was subdivided into 3 levels: <30, 30 to 119, and ≥120 DDDs. Comorbidity, including hypertension, depression, and the Charlson comorbidity index, the frequency of eye care visits, and the use of nonstatin cholesterol-lowering drugs, were all considered as confounding factors.For the group with statin use, the adjusted odds ratio of OAG was 1.02 (95% confidence interval 0.90-1.15) when compared with the group without statin use. Subanalysis showed that a high dosage of statin use (≥120 DDD/y) resulted in a1.24-fold increased risk of OAG (odds ratio 1.24, 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.49). The incidence of OAG was increased with the increase of the dosage of statin use (P for trend = 0.0458).Clinicians should be cautious of hyperlipidemia patients with a high dosage of statin use because it might be associated with an increased risk of OAG. Ophthalmologist consultation is necessary for this high-risk group.

Abstract:ImportanceCataract risk factors data will provide epidemic evidence for cataract prevention. BackgroundThis study aimed to study the risk factors for age-related cataract in a Chinese adult population. DesignThis is a population-based, cross-sectional study. ParticipantsA total of 10 234 eligible subjects 45 years old (response rate: 78.1%) were included in the study. MethodsWe conducted detailed eye examinations including presenting visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, slit lamp examination of lens opacities and fundus examination. Questionnaires about lifestyle were administered. Measurements of blood pressure, heart rate and body mass index were collected. Serological metabolic indicators, including fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, lipoprotein, were also evaluated. We used stepwise multivariate logistic regression model to evaluate the association of these risk factors with any cataract and subtypes of cataract. Main Outcome MeasuresOdds ratios of risk factors for cataract were calculated. ResultsFor any cataract, we found age, gender (female), increased outdoor activity, no outdoor eye protection, high myopia, high low-density lipoprotein, low high-density lipoprotein, lower education level and increased pickled food intake were independent risk factors. When further examined the risk factors of different subtypes of cataract, we found that these risk factors also existed, but there were slight differences among different subtypes. In addition, for cortical cataract, lower annual family income and high diastolic pressure were additional independent risk factors. Conclusions and RelevanceReduced outdoor activity, outdoor eye protection, prevention of high myopia, higher education level, controlled blood pressure, improved high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein levels and reduced pickled food intake may help to reduce the risk of age-related cataract development.
