Abstract:Starch is a homopolysaccharide made up of glucose units which are linked together via a glycosidic linkage. This biopolymer is well known for its low cost, biodegradability, renewability and easy availability. In spite of all these beauties, starch has some problems with their solubility in water, retrogradation, loss of viscosity due to rupturing of glucosidic bond when subjected to treatment and absence of some groups of primary importance like different functional groups especially carboxylic group, ester group, ether group and amino group. In order to overcome these shortcomings and enhance its applications, starch must be modified. The modification can be done chemically, physically and enzymatically, but noteworthy one is the chemical modification. In this review article, we focused on the recently used ways of chemical modification such as acid hydrolysis, cross-linking, acetylation/esterification, dual modification, oxidation and grafting of starch, and their properties. This review article highlighted the application of modified starch as an adsorbent for the removal of ammonia, phenol, heavy metals, and dyes.

Abstract:Starch has received much attention as a promising natural material both in biomedical fields and waste water treatment due to its unique biological and adsorptive properties. Recently, the modification of starch is rapidly developed along with its growing applications. This review focuses on the ways of chemical modification of starch including cross-linking, grafting, esterification, etherification, dual modification and so on, and presents the applications of the modified starch in fields like drug delivery, tissue engineering and heavy metal and dye removal.

Abstract:Starch has great application potential as a renewable green biological material.However,native starch has limits in popularization and application because of its shortcomings.Modification of starch is carried out to improve its properties.In recent years,research report about starch modification has received wide attention.More and more functional properties are introduced into starch by modification.After modification,adhesion stress,freeze-thaw stability,water absorption capacity and thermal stability of starch are remarkably enhanced.The modified starch can be used for adhesive,food production,waste water treatment,as well as biomedcine industrial production field. This review highlights many current methods that have been discovered in starch modification,including chemical (oxidation,cross-linking,graft-copolymer,esterification,etherification and dual modification),physical (hydrother-mal treatment,microwave treatment,ionizing radiation treatment,ultrasonic treatment,ball milling treatment and extrusion treatment)and enzymatic modification.In this paper,a lot of research progresses and applications of starch modification are reviewed and presented.Finally,the research status of modified starch is analyzed and the future di-rection is expected.

Abstract:Apart from its non-toxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, starch has demonstrated eminent functional characteristics, e.g., forming well-defined gels/films, stabilizing emulsions/foams, and thickening/texturizing foods, which make it a promising hydrocolloid for various food purposes. Nonetheless, because of the ever-increasing range of its applications, modification of starch via chemical and physical methods for expanding its capabilities is unavoidable. The probable detrimental impacts of chemical modification on human health have encouraged scientists to develop potent physical approaches for starch modification. In this category, in recent years, starch combination with other molecules (i.e., gums, mucilages, salts, polyphenols) has been an interesting platform for developing modified starches with unique attributes where the characteristics of the fabricated starch could be finely tuned via adjusting the reaction parameters, type of molecules reacting with starch and the concentration of the reactants. The modification of starch characteristics upon its complexation with gums, mucilages, salts, and polyphenols as common ingredients in food formulations is comprehensively overviewed in this study. Besides their potent impact on physicochemical, and techno-functional attributes, starch modification via complexation could also remarkably customize the digestibility of starch and provide new products with less digestibility.

Abstract:Starch is a renewable and multifunctional polysaccharide biopolymer that is widely used both in the food industry and other areas of the economy. However, due to a number of undesirable properties in technological processes, it is subjected to various modifications. They improve its functional properties and enable the starch to be widely used in various industries. A modified starch is a natural starch that has been treated in a way that changes one or more of its initial physical and/or chemical properties. Chemical modification consists of the introduction of functional groups into starch molecules, which result in specific changes in the physicochemical and functional properties of starch preparations. The bases of chemical modifications of starch are oxidation, esterification or etherification reactions. In terms of functionality, modified preparations include cross-linked and stabilized starches. These starches have the status of allowed food additives, and their use is strictly regulated by relevant laws. Large-scale scientific research is aimed at developing new methods of starch modification, and the use of innovative technological solutions allows for an increasingly wider use of such preparations. This paper characterizes chemically modified starches used as food additives, including the requirements for such preparations and the directions of their practical application. Health-promoting aspects of the use of chemically modified starches concerning resistant starch type RS4, encapsulation of bioactive ingredients, starch fat substitutes, and carriers of microelements are also described. The topic of new trends in the use of chemically modified starches, including the production of biodegradable films, edible coatings, and nanomaterials, is also addressed.

Abstract:Starch has been a convenient, economically important polymer with substantial applications in the food and processing industry. However, native starches present restricted applications, which hinder their industrial usage. Therefore, modification of starch is carried out to augment the positive characteristics and eliminate the limitations of the native starches. Modifications of starch can result in generating novel polymers with numerous functional and value-added properties that suit the needs of the industry. Here, we summarize the possible starch modifications in planta and outside the plant system (physical, chemical, and enzymatic) and their corresponding applications. In addition, this review will highlight the implications of each starch property adjustment.

Abstract:Starch is a readily available and abundant source of biological raw materials and is widely used in the food, medical, and textile industries. However, native starch with insufficient functionality limits its utilization in the above applications; therefore, it is modified through various physical, chemical, enzymatic, genetic and multiple modifications. This review summarized the relationship between structural changes and functional properties of starch subjected to different modified methods, including hydrothermal treatment, microwave, pre-gelatinization, ball milling, ultrasonication, radiation, high hydrostatic pressure, supercritical CO2, oxidation, etherification, esterification, acid hydrolysis, enzymatic modification, genetic modification, and their combined modifications. A better understanding of these features has the potential to lead to starch-based products with targeted structures and optimized properties for specific applications.

Abstract:In this article, starch phosphate-g-poly (methacrylic acids) (SP-g-PMAAs) were synthesized by dual modification. Firstly starch phosphate (SP) was synthesized by phosphorylation of native starch (NS) with mono sodium-phosphate and di sodium-phosphate. Afterwards, methacrylic acid (MAA) was grafted onto SP via free radical polymerization to synthesize SP-g-PMAAs. The structure of the SP and SP-g-PMAAs was investigated by phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction studies showed that the modification diminished the crystalline nature of SP and SP-g-PMAAs. The SEM images showed spherical or polyhedral smooth surface for the starch. After modification, SP and SP-g-PMAAs exhibited distorted and rougher surfaces which are assumed to be good for adsorption. The dual modification produced phosphate and carboxylic groups on the starch backbone. The phosphate and carboxylic groups have high tendency to make hydrogen bonding with phenol. The comparative adsorption studies of NS, SP and SP-g-PMAAs were checked for phenol. The experimental results showed adsorption efficiencies of 0.022 g/g, 0.082 g/g, 0.100 g/g, 0.148 g/g and 0.151 g/g for NS, SP, SP-g-PMAA1, SP-g-PMAA2 and SP-g-PMAA3, respectively. The following findings revealed that dual modification enhanced the adsorption ability of NS.

Abstract:Starch,as a natural polymer,has the advantages of renewability,biodegradability,abundance and low cost,and has received great attention in non-food applications for a long time.However,starch cannot be used alone as a polymeric material due to its insolubility in cold water,poor shearing stability and water resistance,and absence of melting flow.Therefore,it should be chemically/physically modified in order to strengthen some functions or form some new properties.This review provides an insight into some developments in the chemical and physical modification of starch for its applications in biodegradable plastics,absorption materials,tissue engineering scaffold and drug carriers primarily based on the publications that appeared during the last five years.The chemical modification of starch included esterification,etherification,oxidation,crosslinking and graft polymerization.The physical modification of starch focused on the blending of starch with other biodegradable polymers such as aliphatic polyesters,poly(vinyl alcohol) and other natural macromolecules.Starch nanocrystals obtained by acid hydrolysis were also reviewed,and they can be functionalized or used to enhance the mechanical properties of starch or other polymer materials.As a kind of renewable material,starch,especially the non-food starch should receive more and more attentions in the preparation of practical polymeric materials in the future.
Effect of the phytate and hydrogen peroxide chemical modifications on the physicochemical and functional properties of wheat starch.

Abstract:To investigate the characteristics of chemically modified wheat starch, such as oxidized (OWS), cross-linked (CLWS) and dual-modified wheat starches, cross-linked oxidized (COWS) and oxidized cross-linked (OCWS) wheat starches were obtained by 12% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and 2% sodium phytate treatments, respectively. After modifications of wheat starch by cross-linking and oxidization, it was determined that native wheat starch was effectively modified with respect to the structure and physicochemical characteristics, as detected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Rapid Visco Analyzer (RVA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). DSC analysis demonstrated that peak temperature (Tp) 64.41°C of the COWS was the highest. The RVA viscosity indexes of CLWS were noticeably increased compared with the other four starches, of which three oxidized starch samples showed lower RVA profiles because of oxidation. The XRD result indicated that cross-linked phosphates from sodium phytate were primarily located in the amorphous regions of starch granules. After modifications by different treatments, the starch samples exhibited different morphological characteristics, including A-type and B-type wheat starch granules, which showed much closer contact with each other by the cross-linking reaction under SEM observations. The functional characteristics, including solubility, swelling power, light transmittance and freeze-thaw stability (FTS), of all five treated and untreated wheat starches demonstrated that COWS had the highest solubility at 0.57 and that CLWS showed the best swelling power at 12.63 (g/g). The paste clarity of COWS was improved to 47.72% higher than that of native starch (7.54%), and the water loss of COWS (21.62%) was the lowest, which is beneficial to the production of quick-frozen food. Our results showed that dual-modified starch by using sodium phytate and hydrogen peroxide had significantly altered structural and functional properties. The present study provides fundamental information of dual-modified wheat starch for its potential industrial application.

Abstract:Starchy foods are an essential part of people's daily diet. Starch is the primary substance used by plants to store carbohydrates, and it is the primary source of energy for humans and animals. In China, a variety of plants, including edible medicinal plants, such as Pueraria root, yam tuber and coix seed, are rich in starch. However, limited by their inherent properties, kudzu starch and other starches are not suitable for the modern food industry. Natural starch is frequently altered by physical, chemical, or biological means to give it superior qualities to natural starch as it frequently cannot satisfy the demands of industrial manufacturing. Therefore, the deep processing market of modified starch and its products has a great potential. This paper reviews the modification methods which can provide excellent functional, rheological, and processing characteristics for these starches that can be used to improve the physical and chemical properties, texture properties, and edible qualities. This will provide a comprehensive reference for the modification and application of starch from medicinal and edible plants.

Abstract:As a class of important natural polymeric additives,numerous starches and their derivatives have been prepared and their properties for various building materials have been studied,such as adhesion,thickening effect,anti-sagging property,anti-slip property,synergy with cellulose ethers,and some of these starches have been widely used in this area.These materials include mainly pregelatinized starches,etherified starches,crosslinked starches,and phosphorylated starches.The building materials area include dry mortars,putty,tile adhesives,latex,wallpaper adhesives,fire-resistant materials and so on.This article provides a review of their research and development in view of the special situation in China.Some important features of their properties and application examples are also presented.

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers obtained from renewable natural resources have received increasing attention due to their potential as alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Among the various sources, polysaccharides stand out as a highly convenient feedstock because they are readily available, renewable, inexpensive, and provide great stereochemical diversity. Starch, a renewable polysaccharide polymer, has been well researched and attracted commercial interest as a feedstock due to its renewability, biodegradability, low cost, and abundance of –OH chemistry, leaving it open to endless modification possibilities and melt processability in the presence of plasticizers. However, its hydrophilicity, thermal, and mechanical properties limitations, rapid degradability, and strong intra and intermolecular hydrogen bonding of the polymer chains hinder its melt processability and limit its widespread commercial application as a renewable biopolymer. Therefore, modification is necessary to mitigate these limitations and bring about other desirable properties. This article critically reviews the recent progress achieved in the modification of starch for industrial biopolymer material applications where starch is used as one of the major constituents.

Abstract:The traditional modified starch has a single hydrophilic property;hydrophobic modification of starch becomes one of the hot points in the field.The present situation and the existing problems of alkyl fatty acid starch ester and alkenyl succinic anhydride at home and abroad were introduced.The main point of starch esterfied by alkyl fatty acid group is how to prepare the product of high degree of substitute at low cost and in friendly environment,while it is important to study products of low dextrose equivalent value of starch esterfied by alkenyl succinic anhydride.The former can be realized through changing the granular structure of starch;and the latter can be resolved through reducing the dosage of enzyme and action time as well as using extrusion technology or a drum dryer.

Abstract:This study was carried out to develop a new type of modified starch based on α-amylase and glucoamylase. The structural and chemical characteristics of the porous starch were determined by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The potential application of the porous starch as an adsorbent was evaluated using methyl violet as an adsorbed model. The adsorption capacity was optimized by investigating the reaction factors, including the mass ratio of α-amylase to glucoamylase (m(α-amylase)/m(glucoamylase)), the mass ratio of total amount of enzymes to starch (m(enzyme)/m(St)), the ratio of liquid volume to starch mass (V(H2O)/M(St)), pH value of the reaction solution, enzymatic reaction temperature, and enzymatic reaction time. The hydrolysis ratio of each sample was also determined to investigate the effect of different reaction conditions on the hydrolysis degree. The results suggest that the porous starch has a more excellent adsorption capacity than the native starch, and may be expected to have wide potential applications in many fields.
