Abstract:The frequent occurrence of crude oil leakage accidents and the massive discharge of industrial oily wastewater not only caused huge damage and pollution to the ecosystem but also wasted a lot of precious resources. Therefore, it is urgent to solve the worldwide problem of oil/water separation. As a leader in advanced fiber materials, nanofibrous materials prepared by electrospinning have the advantages of high permeability, high separation efficiency, large specific surface area, adjustable wettability, simple preparation process, and low cost, making it attracted more attention of researchers in oil/water separation. This article mainly reviews the recent progress of various electrospun nanofibrous materials for oil/water separation field. The preparation and synthesis of nanofibrous adsorbents, nanofibrous membranes, and nanofibrous aerogels in recent years based on different applications, design principles, and separation approaches are systematically summarized. Finally, this review discusses the challenges and future development directions in oil/water separation.

Abstract:Offshore oil spills, industrial oily wastewater, and domestic oil pollution are some of the most serious global challenges, and are leading environmental causes of morbidity and mortality. Nanofiber membrane materials manufactured via electrostatic spinning for oil/water separation have become one of the emerging technologies to treat oil/water emulsions. Here, we give a comprehensive review of current progress on electrospinning nanofibers for oil/water separation to promote the field's advancement. Typical examples of hydrophilic-oleophobic, hydrophobic-oleophilic, and special wettability nanofiber membranes are systematically summarized. The effects of material selection, fiber production processes, and subsequent modifications on the membrane performance are compared and discussed. Potential shortcomings of various types of separation membranes and the potential solutions are provided. The review concludes with a summary and outlook on future directions and innovations in electrospinning nanofibers and membranes for oil/water separation.

Abstract:Human activities produce large amounts of oily wastewater, which needs to be treated to protect the environment. Membrane separation methods have attracted attention because of their high efficiency, however, most of the current membrane separation methods can only be used for one of water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions, and may even be optimized for narrower composition ranges, limiting their applicability. To solve this problem, smart oil/water separation membranes have been proposed. Smart membranes refer to membranes whose wettability can be transformed under specific conditions, including Janus membranes, pre-wetting membranes and responsive membranes. This paper reviews smart oil/water separation membranes prepared using electrospinning methods. Stimuli responsive membranes change their physical properties upon changes in pH, exposure to light or heat, or upon application of an electrical or magnetic field. This review focuses specifically on changes in wettability, and not on changes in other properties. This article describes in detail the preparation of these membranes, the advantages and disadvantages of each membrane, the theoretical support and the wettability transition mechanisms used in the separation process. Illustrative examples of stimuli responsive materials for smart membranes are provided. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for smart membranes in oil/water separation are summarized.

Abstract:Oil-contaminated water and industrial oily wastewater discharges have adversely affected aquatic ecosystems and human safety. Membrane separation technology offers a promising solution for effective oil–water separation. Thus, a membrane with high surface area, hydrophilic–oleophobic properties, and stability is a promising candidate. Electrospinning, a straightforward and efficient process, produces highly porous polymer-based membranes with a vast surface area and stability. The main objective of this study is to produce hydrophilic–oleophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers using core–shell electrospinning. Incorporating CA into the shell of the nanofibers enhances the wettability. The core PAN polymer improves the electrospinning process and contributes to the hydrophilicity–oleophobicity of the produced nanofibers. The PAN/CA nanofibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and surface-wetting behavior. The resulting PAN/cellulose nanofibers exhibited significantly improved surface-wetting properties, demonstrating super-hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, making them a promising choice for oil–water separation. Various oils, including gasoline, diesel, toluene, xylene, and benzene, were employed in the preparation of oil–water mixture solutions. The utilization of PAN/CA nanofibers as a substrate proved to be highly efficient, confirming exceptional separation efficiency, remarkable stability, and prolonged durability. The current work introduces an innovative single-step fabrication method of composite nanofibers, specially designed for efficient oil–water separation. This technology exhibits significant promise for deployment in challenging situations, offering excellent reusability and a remarkable separation efficiency of nearly 99.9%.

Abstract:The effective separation of oily wastewater not only effectively avoids the environmental pollution problems caused by direct discharge, but also enables the recycling of oil and water resources, so the research of materials for separating oily wastewater is particularly important for saving resources and protecting the environment. Membrane separation technology is considered to be the most promising method for effective treatment of oily wastewater due to its flexible operation and high efficiency. Special wettability nanofiber membrane materials have superhydrophobic/superoleophilic or superhydrophilic/superoleophobic properties, which have led to widespread interest in the research of oil-water separation applications. This paper summarizes and concludes the application of different types of special infiltrative nanofiber membrane materials in the field of oil-water separation, points out the problems in the separation process, and finally gives an outlook on its future development direction.

Abstract:Oil spills and the release of oily sewage from domestic and industrial activities have not only imposed a huge threat to all living beings in the ecosystem but have also exacerbated water scarcity. To address such issues, the development of advanced materials and technologies for the purification of emulsified oily wastewater has garnered great concern and become a central topic. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes with intriguing advantages, including tunable wettability, diverse structures, good connectivity, and ease of scalable production, have generated significant interest and are showing great promise for treating emulsified oily wastewater. Here, a systematic overview of the rational design and controlled fabrication of nanofibrous membranes toward the separation of oil‐in‐water emulsions is given. Some design considerations about the fabrication of membranes for emulsion separation are presented as a starting point for the discussion. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes with desirable wettability and rational structure are then introduced and classified as polymeric, inorganic, and hybrid membranes in terms of raw material components. The different design concepts, fabrication strategies, and performance characteristics of each type are comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, significant properties are presented, which are required by membranes in practical applications. Finally, the challenges and future development trends in this field are highlighted.

Abstract:Oily wastewater treatment is an arduous global problem. Electrospinning has great potential applications in construction of durable and highly efficient oil–water separation membranes. In this article, low-cost coal was directly incorporated into the fiber skeleton to enhance the roughness of C-NF and impart hydrophobicity (WCA = 130°). The gravity-driven oil flux exceeded 600 L m −2 h −1 with a separation efficiency of 96.5 % for emulsions. However, successful mitigation of surface fouling while maintaining efficient flux stability and separation efficiency remains a challenge for C-NF membranes. Herein, we adjusted the diameter of fiber membranes by controlling the heat treatment process and then introduced a vapor deposition technique to achieve super-hydrophobicity (>150°) and super-lipophilicity (0°) in the obtained C-NFOH and C-NFCH fibers. As a result, these fibers exhibit high flux and separation efficiency for gravity-driven separation of oil/water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions. Particularly, the C-NFOH membrane exhibits a superior ability to separate water-in-oil emulsions with an efficiency of up to 99.5 %, surpassing that of both C-NF (96.5 %) and C-NFOH (99.2 %) membranes. Furthermore, the robust C-NFOH and C-NFCH membranes exhibit exceptional self-cleaning properties. These membranes are fabricated via direct electrospinning of coal, offering novel opportunities for advanced membrane design in the realm of oil/water emulsion separation.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers have been widely applied in many fields because of its unique advantages. However, it is a challenge to prepare cellulose nanofibers by electrospinning directly owing to the special molecular structure of cellulose. This limits the practical applications of cellulose nanofibers. In this work, cellulose nanofibers were successfully prepared directly by design of new electrospinning receiving device and optimization of process parameters. The as-prepared cellulose nanofibers exhibit good oil-water separation performances. Driven solely by gravity, the separation flux of the cellulose nanofibers for mixture of oil and water reaches 34,300.6 L m-2 h-1, and the separation flux and efficiency for surfactant-stabilized emulsion of oil and water reach 2503.7 L m-2 h-1 and over 98.3%, respectively. The as-prepared cellulose nanofibers also exhibit good mechanical properties and reusability. The breaking strength of the cellulose nanofibers can reach 148.2 cN. The separation fluxes of cellulose nanofibers for mixtures and emulsions of oil and water can be maintained 99.7% and 86.3% of the initial value after being used for 20 times. Furthermore, the as-prepared cellulose nanofibers have good degradability. These properties render as-prepared cellulose nanofibers as promising materials with potential applications in oil-water separation.

Abstract:Non-solvent assisted electrospinning was proposed for fabricating Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres and fibers with a hollow core and porous shell, which could be used for oil adsorption and oil/water separation. Propanediol was chosen as the non-solvent because of its high surface tension and viscosity as well as large phase separation tendency with polymer, which was beneficial to the formation of both the hollow core and porous shell during the electrospinning. With the increase of the polymer solution concentration, the microsphere gradually evolved to the bead-on-string geometry and finally to a continuous fiber form, indicating the transition from electro-spraying to electrospinning. The hollow core and dense surface pores enhanced the hydrophobicity, oleophilicity, permeability, and specific surface area of the fibers, and hence imparted the fibrous mat a high oil adsorption capacity. When the porous hollow microspheres were electro-sprayed onto the stainless steel mesh followed by the PDMS modification, the modified mesh became super-hydrophobic and super-oleophilic with the contact angle of 153° and sliding angle of 4°. The as-prepared mesh showed rapid oil/water separation with high efficiency and excellent recycling performance. The flux for separation of oil/water mixture could reach as high as 11,000 L m−2 h−1. This facile non-solvent assisted electrospinning method provides a new avenue for preparation of multifunctional porous materials which possess potential applications in large-scale oil/water separation.

An Accessible Superhydrophobic Coating with Nanostructure for Continuously Oil/water Separation

Abstract:It is an urgent need to develop low-cost, scalable-fabricating materials, technologies and equipments that are capable to separate oil-water mixtures efficiently. Traditional separation technologies are discontinuous and expensive. Large-scale separation devices are difficult to be prepared. Here we report stainless steel wire mesh coated with Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic coating, which can be easily prepared by solution method. Our mesh can selectively and effectively (>95%) separate oil from oil/water mixtures, such as gasoline, diesel, vegetable oil and kerosene/water mixtures without any extrapower. The separation equipment can be designed to achieve separate and continuous collection of oil and water. We anticipate that our separation method will have numerous applications, including emergency treatment of spill accidents of oil and derivative products, wastewater treatment and fuel purification.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofiber membranes exhibit efficient oil-water separation performance, owing to their fine and controllable fiber diameters. However, the three-dimensional dense stacking of nanofibers leads to low porosity, decreasing the oil flux in oil-water separation. Here, a composite nanofiber membrane with a dual-scale structure was designed to achieve a high oil-water separation efficiency and high oil flux simultaneously. In detail, a dense polyurethane/fluorinated polyurethanes (PAN-FPU) nanofiber layer with a fine fiber diameter (150 nm) and a small pore size (3-4 mu m) was combined with a fluffy polysulfone (PSF) nanofiber layer with a coarse diameter (1200 nm) and a large pore size (8-9 mu m). Using the PAN-FPU nanofiber layer as the inlet layer, modular electrospinning equipment was used to prepare dual-scale nanofiber membranes with a high oil-water separation efficiency and high flux in one step. When the fiber ratio of PAN-FPU/PSF was 1:2, the resulting composite nanofiber film could achieve a separation efficiency of 99.58% and an oil flux of 4630 L m(-2) h(-1) for an oil-water mixture. For a water-in-oil emulsion, the separation efficiency and oil flux reached 99.37% and 1124 L m(-2) h(-1), respectively. In addition, the separation efficiency and flux of the biscale nanofiber membrane were simulated by establishing a fluid model, and the simulation results confirmed that the fiber membrane had excellent separation performance. Dual-scale composite nanofiber membranes have potential applications in the field of oily wastewater treatment and locomotive filters compared with monolayer membranes.

Abstract:In recent years, both the increasing frequency of oil spill accidents and the urgency to deal seriously with industrial oil-polluted water, encouraged material scientists to design highly efficient, cost effective oil-water separation technologies. We report on electrospun nanofibrous membranes which are composed of core-sheath structured cellulose-acetate (CA)-polyimide (PI) nanofibers. On the surface of the CA-PI fibers a fluorinated polybenzoxazine (F-PBZ) functional layer, in which silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were incorporated, has been applied. Compared with F-PBZ/SNP modified CA fibers reported before for the separation of oil from water, the PI-core of the core-shell F-PBZ/SNP/CA-PI fibers makes the membranes much stronger, being a significant asset in their use. Nanofibrous membranes with a tensile strength higher than 200 MPa, a high water contact angle of 160 degrees and an extremely low oil contact angle of 0 degrees were obtained. F-PBZ/SNP/CA-PI membranes seemed very suitable for gravity-driven oil-water separation as fast and efficient separation (>99%) of oil from water was achieved for various oil-water mixtures. The designed core-sheath structured electrospun nanofibrous membranes may become interesting materials for the treatment of industrial oil-polluted water.

Abstract:Superwetting interfacial porous membranes with different wettabilities have enormous potential for wastewater treatment. The wettability of most smart separation membranes is controlled by external environmental factors such as temperature, pH, and pressure. In a constant environment, they have only one kind of wettability and can separate only one type of emulsion, and in multiple extreme environments, they become "unintelligent" and even lose their separation ability. Inspired by China's "Face-Changing in Sichuan Opera," we have prepared a novel electrospun SiNPs/ZnNPs-SiO2/TiO2 (SZST) nanofiber membrane by a calcining-spraying method. The obtained membrane can rapidly switch its wettability in various environments for the controllable separation of both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The advanced electrospinning, combined with micro-nano hierarchical structures, greatly improved the wettability and porosity of the membrane, making the separation efficiency more than 99% stable. Additionally, the flux was maintained at about 2000 L/m2h. Interestingly, the separation efficiency showed almost no change in various harsh environments (e.g., strongly acidic and alkaline conditions, high or low temperatures, and even salty media), and the developed membrane exhibited excellent recyclability. In addition to good corrosion resistance and chemical stability, the membrane demonstrated excellent fire and frost resistance. Therefore, the SZST nanofiber membrane has great practical value in industrial production.

Abstract:Although membrane technology has attracted considerable attention for oily wastewater treatment, the plastic waste generated from discarded membranes presents an immediate challenge for achieving eco-friendly separation. We designed on-demand biodegradable superhydrophilic membranes composed of polylactic acid nanofibers in conjunction with polyethylene oxide hydrogels using electrospinning technology for ultrafast purification of oily water. Our results showed that the use of the polyethylene oxide hydrogels increased the number of hydrogen bonds formed between the membrane surface and water molecules by 357.6%. This converted hydrophobic membranes into superhydrophilic ones, which prevented membrane fouling and accelerated emulsion penetration through the membranes. The oil-in-water emulsion permeance of our newly designed nanofiber membranes increased by 61.9 times (2.1 × 10 4 liters per square meter per hour per bar) with separation efficiency >99.6%, which was superior to state-of-the-art membranes. Moreover, the formation of hydrogen bonds was found to accelerate polylactic acid biodegradation into lactic acid by over 30%, offering a promising approach for waste membrane treatment.

Abstract:Developing superabsorbents for efficiently separating immiscible oil-water mixtures and oil-water emulsions are highly desirable for addressing oily wastewater pollution problems, but it remains a challenge. Ultralight nanofibrous aerogels (NFAs) with unique wetting properties show great potential in oily wastewater treatment. In this study, a facile and efficient method for producing hierarchical porous structured NFAs with hydrophobicity for high efficiency oil-water separation was developed. The synthesis included three steps: wet electrospinning, freeze drying, and in situ polymerization. The obtained NFA demonstrated outstanding oil absorption capacity toward numerous oils and organic solvents, as well as efficient surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion separation with high separation flux and excellent separation efficiency. Furthermore, these NFAs displayed excellent corrosion resistance and outstanding recoverability. We assume that the resultant NFAs fabricated by this facile strategy are highly promising as ideal oil absorbents for practical oily wastewater treatment under harsh conditions.

Abstract:Oily wastewater treatment is an arduous and urgent global problem. Electrospinning has wide applications in construction of high-efficiency oil-water separation membranes. Herein, electrospinning and electrospraying technology were combined to construct a Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanofiber membrane (NFM) with multileveled structure for oily wastewater treatment. The separation performance (driven by gravity) of the NFM to oil-water mixture was studied. In addition, the demulsification performance of the NFM to water-in-oil surfactant-stabilized emulsions (W/O SSEs) under gravity and oil-in-water surfactant-stabilized emulsions (O/W SSEs) at 0.5 bar were studied subsequently. The results showed that the flux of the 9% D-H-PTFE to the oil-water mixture reached 4949 L·m-2·h-1, with a separation rate of 99.99%; the flux to the CCl4 W/O SSE reached 1867.93 L·m-2·h-1 with the separation rate of 98.7%. The flux to the CCl 4 O/W SSE was 111 L·m-2·h-1 and the separation rate was 99.4%. Therefore, these NFMs are expected to be practically applied to a low-pressure driven membrane separation system for preliminary separation of different types of oily wastewater.
