Abstract:Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation has been reported to induce defence responses to pathogens in growing crops and described as a new environmentally friendly method for disease control. However, whether the effect of the induced defence mechanisms will persist after the stress imposed by UV-C is alleviated and how these mechanisms interact with pathogen elicitors upon infection have not yet been investigated. Thus, we inoculated strawberry plants with Mycosphaerella fragariae, the causal agent of leaf spot disease, after 5 weeks of repeated UV-C irradiation treatment (cumulative dose of 10.2 kJ m(-2)) and investigated the alteration of gene expression and biochemical phenotypes. The results revealed that UV-C treatment had a significant impact on gene expression in strawberry leaves and led to the overexpression of a set of genes involved in plant-pathogen interaction. UV-C-treated leaves displayed a stronger response to infection after inoculation, with reduced symptoms and increases in accumulation of total phenolics and volatile terpenes, higher expression of pathogenesis-related proteins and the activity of several defence enzymes. This study presumptively describe, for the first time, the involvement of terpenes, reactive oxygen species, and abscisic acid, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, and their transduction factors, in the network underpinning UV-C priming of growing crops for improved protection against pathogens.

Abstract:Depletion of ozone leads to the increase of Ultraviolet-B radiation on the surface of the Earth.Enhanced UV-B would affect the growth of plants at different extent.This review summarized the research advances in response of seed plants to enhanced Ultraviolet-B radiation in recent years.According to previous studies,higher plants sensitive to UV-B decreased in plant height,leaf area and stem length,with the integrity of chloroplast structure damaged.Photosynthetic organs,genetic material,and proteins etc.are the main targets of UV-B.In order to alleviate the harmful effects of UV-B,plants developed a range of protective mechanisms,including the dispersion and reflectance of UV-B by epicuticular structure and leaf thickening,accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds,reparation of DNA damage and elimination of active radicals.In addition,UV-B significantly interacted with drought and elevated CO\-2.Research on response of woody plant and ecosystem to enhanced UV-B radiation should be emphasized in the future.

Abstract:Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) is a relatively minor component of sunlight, but can induce stress-related physiological processes or UV-B-specific photomorphogenic responses in plants. In the last decade, significant progress has been made in understanding the UV-B photomorphogenic pathway, including identification of the key components in the pathway, molecular characterization of UV-B photoreceptor and perception mechanism, and elucidation of the signal transduction mechanisms from the photoactivated UV-B receptor to downstream gene expression. This review summarizes the key players identified to date in the UV-B photomorphogenic pathway and their roles in mediating UV-B signal transduction.

Abstract:Currently, UV-B supplementation and UV-B exclusion are the main methods for the study on crop response to UV-B radiation. This paper provides a review on the details, the causes and control techniques of systematic errors of the two methods, and a discussion on the differences in crop response to the two treatments. Plants may be more responsive in UV-B-exclusion studies than in UV-B-supplementation studies. However, the enhanced UV-B may be most important in regulating ecosystem processes. For a better understanding of the effect mechanisms of UV-B, plant responses to the both methods should be further studied. Ref 43

Potential of UV-B radiation in drought stress resilience: A multidimensional approach to plant adaptation and future implications

Abstract:The escalating impact of climate change and ultraviolet (UV) radiation is subjecting plants to unique combinations of UV-B and drought stress. These combined stressors could have additive, synergistic, or antagonistic effects, but the precise nature of these impacts remains uncertain, hampering our ability to predict plant adaptations approach towards stressors. Our analysis of various studies shows that UV-B or drought conditions detrimentally influence plant growth and health metrics by the enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species causing damage to lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and DNA. Further reducing biomass accumulation, plant height, photosynthetic efficiency, leaf area, and water transpiration, while enhancing stress-related symptoms. In response to UV-B radiation and drought stress, plants exhibit a notable up-regulation of specific acclimation-associated metabolites, including proline, flavonoids, anthocyanins, unsaturated fatty acids, and antioxidants. These metabolites play a pivotal role in conferring protection against environmental stresses. Their biosynthesis and functional roles are potentially modulated by signalling molecules such as hydrogen peroxide, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, and ethylene, all of which have associated genetic markers that further elucidate their involvement in stress response pathways. In comparison to single stress, the combination of UV-B and drought induces the plant defence responses and growth retardation which are less-than-additive. This sub-additive response, consistent across different study environments, suggests the possibility of a cross-resistance mechanism. Our outlines imply that the adverse effects of increased drought and UV-B could potentially be mitigated by cross-talk between UV-B and drought regimes utilizing a multidimensional approach. This crucial insight could contribute significantly to refining our understanding of stress tolerance in the face of ongoing global climate change.

Abstract:Global warming is a serious challenge plant production has to face. Heat stress not only affects plant growth and development but also reduces crop yield and quality. Studying the response mechanisms of plants to heat stress will help humans use these mechanisms to improve the heat tolerance of plants, thereby reducing the harm of global warming to plant production. Research on plant heat tolerance has gradually become a hotspot in plant molecular biology research in recent years. In view of the special role of chloroplasts in the response to heat stress in plants, this review is focusing on three perspectives related to chloroplasts and their function in the response of heat stress in plants: the role of chloroplasts in sensing high temperatures, the transmission of heat signals, and the improvement of heat tolerance in plants. We also present our views on the future direction of research on chloroplast related heat tolerance in plants.

Abstract:Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation from the past few decades has been widely studied due to the substantial depletion of the stratospheric ozone (O3) layer, causing morphological, physiological, cytological, and biochemical alterations in plants. As a potent abiotic stress factor, enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation has been flagged as a key factor under UV-B stress. UV-B adversely affects plant growth and development. Plants have evolved defense strategies under UV-B stress to counteract these detrimental effects. The most common protective response is an accumulation of secondary metabolites. These provide photoprotection by acting as UV-B absorbing compounds through quenching ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS).UV-B-induced metabolites share a common origin in the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway. These phenylpropanoids induced via UV Resistance Locus 8 (UVR8) signaling are transcriptionally regulated by MYB transcription factors (TFs) and are efficiently transported to different cellular and membrane-limited compartments. The accumulation of metabolites like flavonoids, anthocyanins, lignins and tannins in plants marks the importance of its metabolism in UV-B tolerance mechanism. Plant species responded differently to increased UV-B exposure in terms of phenylpropanoid concentration. Apart from UV-B screening agents, these are also potent ROS scavengers due to their structural composition and less reactive nature. The dynamic balance between ROS accumulation under UV-B stress and its metabolism via phenylpropanoids holds the key to the stress tolerance attributes of a plant. The present review focuses on the UV-B-induced secondary metabolites in plants, their biosynthesis, and defense strategies that will help in the elucidation of medicinally important bioactive compounds as well as in the development of UV-B tolerant plants.

Abstract:Despite the increasing occurrence of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, its molecular mechanism is poorly documented in higher plants compared to other environmental stress. In present study, the influence of supplemental UV-B radiation on photosynthetic performance and antioxidant enzymes in rice (Oryza sativa L.) was investigated. Supplemental UV-B radiation reduced net photosynthetic rate in rice flag leaves during senescence stage. By means of the JIP-test, it was found that the potential of processing light energy through the photosynthetic machinery was slightly inhibited by the increased thermal dissipation. Furthermore, 18 thylakoid membrane protein spots were differentially expressed (5-fold or greater variation compared to the control) in supplemental UV-B-treated rice. These identified proteins were involved in various cellular responses and metabolic processes including photosynthesis, stress defense, Calvin cycle, and others of unknown functions. Taken together, these results suggested that physiological changes that resulted from supplemental UV-B radiation were linked to the light reaction, carbon metabolism, and antioxidant enzymes in rice leaves during senescence stage.

Abstract:Purpose: The increasing amounts of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light in our surroundings have sparked worries about the possible effects on humans and plants. The detrimental effects of heightened UV-B exposure on these two vital elements of terrestrial life are different due to their unique and concurrent nature. Understanding common vulnerabilities and distinctive adaptations of UV-B radiation by exploring the physiological and biochemical responses of plants and the effects on human health is of huge importance. The comparative effects of UV-B radiation on plants and animals, however, are poorly studied. This review sheds light on the sophisticated web of UV-B radiation effects by navigating the complex interaction between botanical and medical perspectives, drawing upon current findings. Conclusion: By providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex effects of heightened UV-B radiation on plants and humans, this study summarizes relevant adaptation strategies to the heightened UV-B radiation stress, which offer new approaches for improving human cellular resilience to environmental stressors.

Abstract:Increased temperatures caused by global warming threaten agricultural production, as warmer conditions can inhibit plant growth and development or even destroy crops in extreme circumstances. Extensive research over the past several decades has revealed that chloroplasts, the photosynthetic organelles of plants, are highly sensitive to heat stress, which affects a variety of photosynthetic processes including chlorophyll biosynthesis, photochemical reactions, electron transport, and CO2 assimilation. Important mechanisms by which plant cells respond to heat stress to protect these photosynthetic organelles have been identified and analyzed. More recent studies have made it clear that chloroplasts play an important role in inducing the expression of nuclear heat-response genes during the heat stress response. In this review, we summarize these important advances in plant-based research and discuss how the sensitivity, responses, and signaling roles of chloroplasts contribute to plant heat sensitivity and tolerance.

The growth and photosynthetic responses of Cleyera japonica Thunb.seedlings to UV-B radiation stress

Abstract:In order to reveal the impact of the UV-B radiation on the woody plants in subtropical regions of China,the paper researches the effects of UV-B radiation stress on photosynthetic and physiological characters of typical woody plant Cleyera japonica Thunb.seedlings.Blocked UV-B group(BU),Solar UV group(CK) and enhanced UV-B group(EU) were set for field experiment in which C.japonica seedlings were selected as experimental material.Measurements were carried out from August 2007 to July 2009(base data was from August 2007).Results showed a great variety of UV-B effects on photosynthesis,morphology and growth,which are that:(1)The decreased UV-B radiation significantly increased the amount of the chlorophyll of C.japonica(P<0.05),while the enhanced UV-B radiation reduced the chlorophyll content.Furthermore,the parameter comparison of three growth seasons revealed that more and more significant reduction of the chlorophyll content occurred under enhanced UV-B radiation over time,which could be interpreted as a cumulative UV-B effect on the seedlings and would likely bring a negative effect on the photosynthesis of the seedlings in the long term treatment.(2) Plant height and main stem diameter were measured at the full bloom stage.Both the enhanced and decreased UV-B radiation could inhibited the stem diameter of C.japonica seedlings and the former inhibition proved to be more effective than the latter one.The height could be promoted under decreased UV-B radiation,inhibited under enhanced one.The different responses between plant height and stem diameter to UV-B radiation treatment suggests that not only the growth rate but also the internal growth mechanism of C.japonica seedlings was changing under the UV-B radiation stress.The parameter comparison of three growth seasons exhibited a tendency to decreased stress on the growth of C.japonica seedlings as the treat time went by.UV-B-absorbing compounds,which accumulate to shield plants against harmful UV-B radiation by absorbing UV-B radiation,were the best explanation and most effective self-protective responses of plants to UV-B radiation.(3)Significantly promoted photosynthesis was observed in C.japonica seedlings in response to decreased UV-B radiation according to the analysis of light response curves,while the inhibited effect was observed under enhanced UV-B radiation,the inhibition was not significant yet.Analysis of photosynthetic characteristic parameter demonstrated that both the enhanced and decreased UV-B radiation could induced significantly reduction in light saturation point(LSP) and light compensation point(LCP) during the 3-year study period,nevertheless,the scarcely significant changes of the maximum net photosynthetic rate(Amax),apparent quantum yield(AQY) and dark respiration rate(Rd) were observed,indicating that UV-B radiation exerted no significant influence on the light use efficiency of the seedlings.In brief,large increases in UV-B radiation were unlikely to have a significant negative effect on the photosynthesis of C.japonica seedlings in the short term.As UV-B effects may be cumulative or delayed,and woody plants are long-lived,the relatively small changes in photosynthesis or the light use efficiency which were observed in our study may result in some long-term effects.Therefore,the long-term and multiple-season field study on woody plants is necessary in the future.
Short-Term Uv-B Radiation Effects on Morphology, Physiological Traits and Accumulation of Bioactive Compounds in Prunella Vulgaris L.

Abstract:Prunella vulgaris plants (full-bloom stage) were subjected to short-term (15 days) UV-B radiation in a growth chamber. UV-B radiation was effective at enhancing morphological and biomass characteristics and decreasing chlorophyll contents of P. vulgaris. Treatment of P. vulgaris with artificial UV-B radiation significantly increased peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) activities compared to the control treatment. UV-B radiation significantly increased the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline in leaves of P. vulgaris compared to those of control plants. In addition, the contents of total flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and hyperoside significantly increased under UV-B radiation. The total phenolic levels also increased under UV-B treatment. These results demonstrated that short-term UV-B radiation can enhance production of secondary metabolites in P. vulgaris, resulting in increased spica yield compared to that of control plants.

Abstract:Our study aims to identify the mechanisms involved in regulating the response of Rhodoendron Chrysanthum Pall. ( R. chrysanthum ) leaves to UV-B exposure; phosphorylated proteomics and metabolomics for phenolic acids and plant hormones were integrated in this study. The results showed that UV-B stress resulted in the accumulation of salicylic acid and the decrease of auxin, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid, cytokinin and gibberellin in R. chrysanthum . The phosphorylated proteins that changed in plant hormone signal transduction pathway and phenolic acid biosynthesis pathway were screened by comprehensive metabonomics and phosphorylated proteomics. In order to construct the regulatory network of R. chrysanthum leaves under UV-B stress, the relationship between plant hormones and phenolic acid compounds was analyzed. It provides a rationale for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of radiation tolerance in plants.

A PHR-dependent reciprocal antagonistic interplay between UV response and P-deficiency adaptation in plants

Abstract:Plants are often simultaneously stressed by both UV radiation and phosphorus (P) deficiency in agricultural ecosystems. Coordinated responses and adaptations to these stressors are critical for plant growth, development, and survival. However, the underlying molecular response and adaptation mechanisms in plants remain elusive. Here, we show that plants use a reciprocal antagonistic strategy in response to UV radiation and P deficiency. UV radiation inhibited P-starvation response (PSR) processes and disrupted phosphate (Pi) homeostasis by suppressing the function of PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE PROTEINS (PHRs), the Pi central regulators. Conversely, P availability modulated the plant UV tolerance and the expression level of UV radiation response (URR) genes in a PHR-dependent manner. Therefore, reducing P supply or increasing PHRs activities can improve the tolerance to UV stress in rice. Moreover, this antagonistic interaction is conserved across various plant species. Furthermore, our meta-analysis showed that the increase in global UV radiation over the last forty years may reduce crop P-utilization efficiency worldwide. Our findings provide insights for optimizing P fertilizer management and breeding smart crops resilient to fluctuations in UV radiation and soil P levels.
Molecular Mechanism of Exogenous ABA to Enhance UV-B Resistance in Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. by Modulating Flavonoid Accumulation

Abstract:With the depletion of the ozone layer, the intensity of ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation reaching the Earth's surface increases, which in turn causes significant stress to plants and affects all aspects of plant growth and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of response to UV-B radiation in the endemic species of Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. (R. chrysanthum) in the Changbai Mountains and to study how exogenous ABA regulates the response of R. chrysanthum to UV-B stress. The results of chlorophyll fluorescence images and OJIP kinetic curves showed that UV-B radiation damaged the PSII photosystem of R. chrysanthum, and exogenous ABA could alleviate this damage to some extent. A total of 2148 metabolites were detected by metabolomics, of which flavonoids accounted for the highest number (487, or 22.67%). KEGG enrichment analysis of flavonoids that showed differential accumulation by UV-B radiation and exogenous ABA revealed that flavonoid biosynthesis and flavone and flavonol biosynthesis were significantly altered. GO analysis showed that most of the DEGs produced after UV-B radiation and exogenous ABA were distributed in the cellular process, cellular anatomical entity, and catalytic activity. Network analysis of key DFs and DEGs associated with flavonoid synthesis identified key flavonoids (isorhamnetin-3-O-gallate and dihydromyricetin) and genes (TRINITY_DN2213_c0_g1_i4-A1) that promote the resistance of R. chrysanthum to UV-B stress. In addition, multiple transcription factor families were found to be involved in the regulation of the flavonoid synthesis pathway under UV-B stress. Overall, R. chrysanthum actively responded to UV-B stress by regulating changes in flavonoids, especially flavones and flavonols, while exogenous ABA further enhanced its resistance to UV-B stress. The experimental results not only provide a new perspective for understanding the molecular mechanism of the response to UV-B stress in the R. chrysanthum, but also provide a valuable theoretical basis for future research and application in improving plant adversity tolerance.

Abstract:The amount of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation reaching the Earth's surface is increasing due to stratospheric ozone dynamics and global climate change. Increased UV-B radiation poses a major threat to ecosystems. Although many studies have focused on the potential effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on plants, the dynamic changes of defense response in plants under continuous UV-B radiation remains enigmatic. In this study, we investigated the effect of UV-B radiation at 0.024 W/m2 on the UVR8-and reactive oxygen species (ROS-) signaling pathways, antioxidant system, and wax synthesis of G. uralensis. These parameters were investigated at different UV-B radiation stages (2 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 96 h). The results revealed that the uvr8 expression level was significantly repressed after 2 h of UV-B radiation, partly because G. uralensis rapidly acclimated to UV-B. Significant H2O2 accumulation occurred after 12 h UV-B radiation, resulting in activation of the ROS signaling pathway and the antioxidant system. After 24 h of UV-B radiation, wax synthesis was enhanced alongside a decrease in the capacity of the main antioxidant system. The dynamic and ordered changes in these pathways reveal how different strategies function in G. uralensis at different times during adaption to enhanced UV-B radiation. This study will help us better understand dynamic changes of defense response in plant under enhanced UV-B radiation, further providing fundamental knowledge to develop plant resistance gene resources.
