Abstract:China’s expansion in higher education has also given rise to developing university towns in sub-cities to deal with increasing enrollments and contribute to broader socio-economic development. Taking Xiasha University Town in Hangzhou as a case study, this paper adopts a tripartite framework of teaching, research, and service to investigate the role of university towns in human capital and skills development, regional innovation, and social and community services. This paper is the first to systematically evaluate Hangzhou’s largest university town after more than two decades since its development; it also provides a more nuanced and contextual approach to university town developments similar to others in China or broader learning region integrations globally. Documentary research and interviews from relevant stakeholders were utilized to collect data. This study presents the three dimensions contextualized within Xiasha and points to issues that can further improve such through a more efficient resource-sharing scheme, a focused discipline orientation, more significant investments in research and development, and a more active role in community engagement.

Abstract:The Jingshi Daxuetang established in 1898 displayed the form but not the real- ity of a university.The so called"form"refers to the fact that it borrowed relevant system of a modern university and introduced relevant instruction contents from Japan indirectly. While,"reality"so called was still under the influence of traditional ideas,not free from the old-fashioned bureau nature.The phenomenon mentioned above can be reflected in Qinding Jingshi Daxuetang Zhangcheng(regulations of Peking University made in 1902)and Jingshi Daxuetang zhangcheng made in 1904.Not until the appearance of Daxue Ling chiefly made by Cai yuanpei at the beginning of the Republic of China can the university idea of modern u- niversity see the transition from tradition to modern.

Abstract:The first decade of 1900s was the decade when great changes had taken place in Chinese traditional education.The abolition of the imperial examination system,the issue and implementation of modern school system and the establishment of a large number of new-style schools had greatly shocked the souls of millions of scholars who studied earnestly day and night under the old educational system and had a lot to do with their future and destinies.As a traditional scholar benefiting from imperial examination system,facing great educational changes in the early 1900s,the cognition and activities of Yun Yuding,on the one hand,were greatly influenced by his growth and traditional culture.He felt distressful,grieved and enraged at the collapse of mainstream value system of the feudal society;on the other hand,the consideration of the interests of his family and himself impelled him to get involved into the changes consciously and unconsciously.All the conflicts and paradoxes shown in his lectures and activities were actually a miniature of the complexities of the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1900s and reflected a cultural predicament confronting the intellectuals in times of critical transformation.

Abstract:Yenching University, one of the most influential institutions in Chinese education in the first half of the twentieth century, also was emblematic of Sino-American cultural interchanges. Its development in the late 1910s and the 1920s coincided with a strong upsurge in national sentiment and anti-Christian movements in China. When the Communist victory and the Korean War brought patriotic anti-American feelings to a peak, the university was deeply shaken and was forced to close its doors. Forty years after its closure, Yenching’s name still arouses memories and fierce unresolved controversies. Both strong critics and defenders of the school need to include the Yenching experience in any discussion of cultural activities between the United States and China in the twentieth century. Yenching is more than a historical interlude, for the Yenching experience sheds light on issues that may influence the future of educational and cultural interactions in Sino-American relations.

Abstract:In the early days Department of Sociology,Yanjing University,was mainly staffed with American teachers and the objectives of training,programs of courses and textbooks were thickly characteristic of the West.And a teaching faculty with Chinese teachers as the mainstay had not taken shape till some 1926.These Chinese teachers worked hard to develop Chinese theory of sociology,train Chinese sociological workers and serve development of Chinese society.They made great contributions to the Chinesization of sociology and valuable experience to the construction of college disciplines.

Abstract:A provisional education-conference was held in Beijing from July 10,1912 to August 10,1912 by the Ministry of Education in the early Republic of China,which tried to draw up the major educational policies of the Republic of China through communication between government and civilians.Many significant issues such as the aims of education,school systems and many other types of school regulations were discussed,which became the prototypes of many major measures of educational reform,and had a great impact on the education development of the Republic of China.From the perspective of education modernization,it could be said that it was an initial attempt to the democratization of educational decision-making advocated by Cai Yuan-pei.

Abstract:Based on the analyses on the quality of educational periodicals and the number of publications and citations in Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI), this paper intends to make an analysis and introduction of the general situation of Chinese educational journals and publications during 2000–2004. Results show that the quantity of educational periodicals and papers published in China, their influence, impact factor and the quantity of language varieties and quotation types are not completely compatible.

Abstract:The Chinese government aspires for inclusive education to serve as an exemplary model in addressing educational inequity issues and establishing a responsible global image as a major power. Nevertheless, there has been limited focus on China’s news media coverage concerning its inclusive education initiatives aimed at international audiences. To bridge this gap, this study employed a corpus-assisted critical discourse analytic approach to examine China’s self-image in relation to its inclusive education endeavours. Seventy-three English-language news articles from the official channel were retrieved for meticulous line-by-line concordance analysis. The results indicate that out of the 520 co-occurring instances, they can be broadly categorised into four groups: efforts to develop inclusive education (65.4%); consensus on benefits of inclusive education (24.5%); challenges faced by inclusive education (4.8%); and others (5.4%). This study illuminates the effective utilisation of official media in the image construction of inclusive education in China.

Abstract:The spread of Christianity to China initiated a process of indigenization, particularly evident in Christian art. This study explores the indigenization of early 20th-century Chinese Christian paintings through literature reviews, case studies, and comparative research. The analysis covers four forms of primary research. First, it explores the indigenization of Christian concepts, tracing their development from the introduction of Nestorian Christianity in the Tang dynasty through the establishment of Fu Jen Catholic University in the Republican era. Matteo Ricci's implementation of the "Ricci Rule" during the late Ming dynasty, subsequently expanded by Celso Costantini, played a crucial role in the indigenous adaptation of Christian painting in China. The second facet focuses on the Beijing Catholic School of Painting, led by Chen Yuandu, a group that innovated Chinese Christian art by integrating local artistic expressions with traditional depictions of saints, assimilating symbols from Chinese literati painting, and preserving time-honored Chinese painting techniques. The third facet examines the strategy behind Christian painting methods. Fourth, this study discusses how the Fu Jen School faced varied reception and evaluations from domestic and international audiences under the complex social currents of the Republic of China and how the artists reflected the national spirit and artistic responsibility in their narrative paintings. Fundamentally, the practice of Christian painting at the early 20th-century Catholic School is not only an innovative artistic endeavor but also a significant case of cultural exchange between East and West and religious localization.

Abstract:This paper presents data from a qualitative research project with university students in China regarding how they interpreted and represented the government's newly stated direction into a "New Era". It also investigates how different forms of media, as well as ideological and political curricula and activities, informed student participants' unsystematical and sentimental national imaginaries. This research employs qualitative coding methods and textual analysis to interpret the meanings of 73 students' interview transcripts. The findings reveal that most participants in the study did not take up the governmental voice, but used their own imaginaries in reworking the meaning of related policies. Their national imaginaries had plural and inconsistent value orientations, articulating a fervent nationalist aspiration with the apathy of socio-political issues and an uncritical admiration of the west. University students' imaginaries were less informed by ideological and political education, but more by images offered and circulated via popular and social media. Adopting a critical stance, the research views popular and social media as largely shaped by commercial logic. These forms of media provide barren soil for critical reflections upon individuals' relations to the nation.

Abstract:The defeat of the First Sino-Japanese War led to the intensification of the national crisis, and the call for “education saving the nation” was rising. To consolidate its authority, the Qing government implemented various policies to encourage Chinese students to study teacher education in Japan. This paper focuses on those students who studied in Japan during the late Qing Dynasty, summarizes the factors of the rise of the study abroad movement and the situation of teacher education in Japan, and discusses the contribution of overseas students to the modernization of Chinese education from multiple perspectives.

Abstract:Only a few years following the publication of Democracy and Education, from May 1919 to July 1921, John Dewey traveled and lectured in China. He arrived an already famous American psychologist, philosopher, and educator; but over the course of the years after his departure, that fame diminished, turning to infamy in the 1950s and 1960s, only to be somewhat restored in recent decades. The changing attitudes of the Chinese to Dewey and his ideas are associated with the changing, and often tumultuous, cultural and political context for education in China from the time of his visit through the following century. Hu Shi and Tao Xingzhi, PhD students of Dewey at Columbia University, were prominent Chinese educators who adapted Dewey's educational concepts to the Chinese environment, and their work continues to influence educational debate in China today. While there is desire among many contemporary educators for educational reforms that would be in line with Dewey's principles, there are equal or greater pressures for maintaining systems focused on examinations and memorization.
