Abstract:According to Design standard for energy efficiency of residential buildings in hot summer and cold winter zone (JGJ 134-2010),there is a great difference between continuous energy utilization and actual energy usage.Based on the large scale of questionnaire survey in Hangzhou,a typical city in hot summer and cold winter zone,obtains the basic air conditioning behavior of local residents,the tolerant temperature and the average set temperature.Analyses the energy saving effects of the exterior thermal insulation of the residential buildings under different energy usage modes using building energy consumption simulation software DeST.The results show that reasonably setting the design condition in energy saving design standards is an important premise for accurately evaluating the energy saving effect of the exterior thermal insulation.

Abstract:Optimizing the thermal storage of building components is crucial for improving indoor thermal conditions and reducing heating energy consumption. However, existing studies often overlook the effect of the substantial thermal mass in common building components, each storing different levels of heat. This study finds that considering this thermal mass and its energy during the building design phase can significantly save insulation material costs and heating energy consumption.Our work is built upon the analysis of the thermal behaviors of real buildings. We collected data from 43 representative rooms in cold regions and utilized Multiple Linear Regression models to examine how solar radiation and outdoor temperatures affect thermal mass in external walls, internal walls, and floors. We also used Probabilistic Density Distribution models to study heat transfer within these components. Subsequently, we applied Conduction Transfer Functions with just a 2.08% error rate to derive an optimal passive design strategy for year-round use of building thermal mass. Experimental results show that our strategy saves more energy by 0.78 kWh/m2 without increasing the insulation material cost, exceeding current standards. In cold regions, our study suggests focusing on mitigating the negative effects of building thermal mass, which offers greater energy savings than exploiting its positive aspects. Moreover, our findings can be easily integrated into the optimization of physical properties like thermal capacity and insulation for either improving stock buildings or designing new buildings, further enhancing their energy and material efficiency.

Abstract:It has been challenging for designers to identify the appropriate design parameters that would reduce building energy consumption while achieving thermal comfort for building occupants. This study aims to determine the most important architectural building design parameters (ABDPs) that can increase thermal comfort and reduce energy use in educational buildings. The effect of 15 ABDPs in an Australian educational lecture theatre and their variabilities on energy consumption and students’ thermal comfort for each parameter were analysed using Monte Carlo (MC) techniques. Two thousand simulations for every input parameter were performed based on the selected distribution using the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique. Sensitivity analyses (SA) and uncertainty analyses (UA) were used to assess the most important ABDPs in terms of thermal discomfort hours and energy consumption. The study found that the ABDPs, such as cooling set-point temperatures and roof construction, significantly reduce the operative temperature by up to 14.2% and 20.0%, respectively. Consequently, these reductions could significantly shorten the thermal discomfort hours, thereby reducing energy consumption by 43.7% and 41.0%, respectively. The findings of this study enable building designers to identify which ABDPs have a substantial impact on thermal comfort and energy consumption.

Abstract:Due to the current environmental situation, energy saving has become the leading drive in modern research. Although the residential houses in tropical climate do not use air conditioning to maintain thermal comfort in order to avoid use of electricity. As the thermal comfort is maintained by adequate envelope composition and natural ventilation, this paper shows that it is possible to determine the thickness of envelope layers for which the best thermal comfort is obtained. The building is modeled in EnergyPlus software and HookeJeves optimization methodology. The investigated house is a typical residential house one-storey high with five thermal zones located at Reunion Island, France. Three optimizations are performed such as the optimization of the thickness of the concrete block layer, of the wood layer, and that of the thermal insulation layer. The results show optimal thickness of thermal envelope layers that yield the maximum TC according to Fanger predicted mean vote.

Abstract:<p>Three main groups of internal and external influencing factors have been identified through this review, including building characteristics, equipment and technologies, and occupant's behaviors. The consideration of only building characteristics cannot guarantee the best energy design of a building, as it could be dependent on the other two groups of factors. Under some circumstances, some of the energy efficiency design solutions did not consider economic or environmental benefits. A wide range of advanced technologies is available for building designers, while challenges still exist from a cost-effectiveness perspective. Many numerical results are hard to validate and confirm the feasibility of those real projects. Comparatively, occupant behavior interventions provide an alternative solution for building users to improve energy efficiency with a relatively low cost and unsophisticated construction procedures. According to those reviewed studies, the ranges of energy-saving are 10-28% and 43-71% through the smart control of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and the lighting systems, respectively. The trends of key influencing factors on energy efficiency design have slightly changed over the past few decades. The influencing factors had been mainly investigated in the optimization design and technological updates of buildings previously but now have incorporated the building management of occupant behaviour. Few studies have been carried out to integrate the occupant behavior model into the current energy simulation software. Thus, two research directions can be concluded after this review. Building efficiency design needs to be conducted from a systematic view to figure out the underlying issues among different efficient design measures. Energy performance benchmarking of both occupant behavior interventions and the technological updates and building service systems are urgently needed as a guided reference to help the building users to make smart decisions.</p>

Abstract:Abstract The need for maintaining thermal comfort conditions inside the building is a significant contributor to the total energy requirements of the buildings. Thus far, limited research has offered some strategies to mitigate the effect of ambient conditions on the thermal comfort and the building energy requirements for composite climatic zone in India. In order to address this problem, this study was conducted to evaluate and analyze the impacts of four different passive design strategies, i.e., insulation, cool roof, phase change material (PCM) thermal storage system, and shading, on thermal comfort and energy demand in the two-storey building situated in the composite climate zone of Delhi, India. The results obtained by numerical simulation for four different cities, i.e., Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Indore, have been compared to study the effect of local climatic and seasonal variations within the composite climatic zones. The simulations were conducted using the Design Builder software to capture results for one year. The results indicate that no single passive design strategy is sufficient to maintain comfortable conditions inside the building. The cool roof provides significant benefits in combination with other passive technologies in all seasons except for December, January, and February. The combination of insulation and PCM is useful for winter conditions. Energy saving of up to 20.5% is possible using the combination of all four passive strategies, whereas the cool roof alone gives an 18% reduction in energy load. The PCM with a melting point of about 32 °C is suggested for the cities under study.

Abstract:Abstract The energy consumption of office buildings is analysed, and the influential factors to be considered in architectural design that affect the light and heat environment of office buildings are summarised. The original building model was established by Ecotect, and variable methods were adopted to simulate the influence of different influencing factors on the light and thermal environment, and to quantitatively evaluate the importance of different factors on energy consumption of buildings. This analysis provides an important basis for optimised energy saving design, and finally puts forward the optimal design strategy for energy saving, so as to build harmonious light and heat architectural environment.

Abstract:Current housing unit design focuses on performance optimization, such as building energy use, daylighting, and occupant comfort. There is significant potential for efficient optimization in the early design stage. This paper proposed a building energy demand optimization framework that considers building design variables for housing unit design in Beijing. First, a high-rise apartment building was designed using geometric and thermal envelope parameters. Second, a thermal load simulation of the housing unit was performed. Third, sensitivity analysis and multi-objective optimization were conducted to evaluate the building's performance. Finally, a neural network was trained to predict the thermal load. A comparison of the base case and optimal cases revealed that more than 20% of energy demand could be saved. In addition, the effect of the parameters on the thermal load and the lighting schedules on the unit's energy load were analyzed.

Abstract:According to the climate features and the energy consumption characteristics of public buildings in the hot summer and cold winter regions,in order to reduce the energy consumption for air-conditioning and lighting systems some energy saving schemes are designed.Since the energy consumption of air-conditioning system is the most important part in total building energy consumption,the energy saving methods for building envelope,which is closely related to the energy consumption of air-conditioning system,including the design of outer wall,forms,and exterior shadings are emphatically analyzed;the heat recovery technology of new air system is briefly described;and a scheme with LED technology instead of existing energy-saving lamps is proposed.The results of energy consumption analysis after renovation show that the proposed energy saving schemes have high pertinence and tremendous promotion action on the energy saving of the public buildings in hot summer and cold winter regions,which further stress the importance of energy saving idea.

Abstract:Since the building's heating and cooling needs are always growing during the cold and warm months, respectively, the building's energy consumption has shot up dramatically. So, phase change materials (PCMs) became the first for latent thermal storage applications in the building sector, but with some limitations. So, herein, an overview of PCMs classifications and the most available and commonly used types, PCMs disadvantages and the provided solutions for thermal properties, safety, and cost issues, the effectiveness of adding PCMs into building construction elements, PCM incorporation methods as a solution for PCMs being in the liquid state, PCMs thermo-physical properties with the provided enhancement techniques. Moreover, the selection of PCM with design consideration based on some real applications was reviewed since using the right materials with the right properties could decrease the annual energy consumption by 17.6 %. Otherwise, using the wrong materials may cause increases in energy consumption. Optimizing the location of PCMs could come up with better performance. Using PCMs on the floor or as a layer between the concrete could up a 3°C temperature differential at all times. The poor heat transfer of PCMs has been beat defeated by using some additives; using PCMs with graphite had 12 times higher thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Office building thermal environment quality is essential since thermal comfort and worker productivity are closely related. As thermally comfortable condition is determined by the climate, geography, and surroundings, it is vital to have thermal comfort standards to guide the building designers to create a comfortable indoor thermal environment. The current paper reviews studies on adaptive approach of thermal comfort carried out in offices across the world. It has analyzed many research papers through Scopus. This study reveals that indoor thermal condition is impacted by outdoor climates and the impact is higher in naturally ventilated building. Building with natural ventilation has 17.6°C to 31.2°C rage of comfortable temperature. Adaptive comfort models have also been proposed to predict the comfortable indoor temperature in different modes. According to several studies, lowering the set point and using natural ventilation may result in considerable energy savings. The importance of developing climate specific thermal comfort guidelines in order to create energy efficient designs is also emphasized in this study, as present comfort standards may not be suitable for all climates.

Abstract:This paper discusses the effect of various climatic conditions that pertain to passive design measurements and their relationships with building configurations to improve indoor thermal comfort based on the different climate zones in Egypt to support Egypt’s sustainability agenda 2030. We find the most appropriate design settings that can increase the indoor thermal comfort, such as building orientation and shape. These settings can be modeled using DesignBuilder software combined with Egyptian meteorological data. This software is used accompanied by computational fluid dynamics to numerically assess the outcomes of different changes, by simulating indoor climate condition factors such as wind speed and temperature. Natural ventilation simulations were performed for four different shapes to create comprehensive dataset scenarios covering a general range of shapes and orientations. Seven scenarios were optimized to put forward a series of building bioclimatic design approaches for the different characteristic regions. The results indicated that the temperature decreased by about 3.2%, and the air velocity increased within the study domain by 200% in the best and the worst cases, respectively, of the four different shapes. The results of the study gave evidence that the configuration of buildings, direction, and wind speed are very important factors for defining the natural ventilation within these domains to support the green building concept and the sustainable design for a better lifestyle.

Abstract:Based on a large number of researches and engineering practices both domestic and overseas, it is shown that the building parameters to be determined during scheme phase can exert a great effect on the building energy consumption. In this paper, through a combination of the popular design method of building parameterization at present and the design goal of energy saving during the scheme phase, the author carries out researches on the design methods and tool development which are applicable to parameterization of building energy saving in this stage. In connection with the characteristics of both modeling process of parameterization and energy saving design, and by means of steady calculation as well as simulation, this paper establishes an simplified model to calculate the overall energy consumption of air-conditioning, heating, lighting and equipments, and ultimately gives suggestions on design of scheme for energy saving by optimization with the genetic algorithm (GA). On the basis of the model, a software platform is developed by computer language QT and openGL interface and is oriented to the design users and sets up the MMI (human–computer interaction) software interface for parameterization of building energy saving, which achieves automatic modeling of parameterization and promotes research on practical design cases.

Abstract:In order to explore the thermal characteristics and thermal storage performance analysis of energy-saving phase change heat storage materials in buildings, taking the common exterior wall insulation composite wall structure in southwestern China as an example, the influence of insulation board structure thickness design on the total cost of residential air conditioning energy consumption and insulation board cost is studied, thus clarifying the concept and calculation origin of economic insulation thickness. The experimental results show that by drawing mathematical functions of energy consumption cost, total cost, and insulation material cost in the same 2-D coordinate, it is intuitively demonstrated that the minimization of total cost can be ensured when the insulation thickness is in an economic state, and the specific economic thickness can be accurately calculated through example data. Therefore, specific measures for improving external wall insulation from refined insulation structure design are proposed. It has been proven that the design of the exterior wall insulation layer structure is an important way to improve the overall energy-saving benefits of building exterior wall insulation.

The building energy conservation is imperative, and heating system design is the head of heating system energy conservation. To achieve the purpose of energy conservation, the paper analyses existing problems in heating system design at present. Combining with heating system design of boiler house, thermal net and monomeric building, the paper put forward relevant energy conservation measures. For example, boiler house adopts automatic control energy conservation new technique, thermal net adopts utilidor direct?buried technique, and monomeric building should precedently adopt two pipe system, automaticly control room temperature. The paper also suggest revising outdoor calculating temperature for current heating.

Abstract:Rising energy demands in buildings for heating, cooling and operating appliances underscore the importance of implementing energy-efficient solutions. Passive cooling techniques provide a sustainable alternative to conventional, energy-intensive cooling systems, promising reduced energy consumption in buildings. Using a dynamic heat transfer model validated with ANSYS Fluent, this study examined three configurations: integrating phase change materials at the brick's centerline with cavities filled with air, EPS insulation, and emissivity coating. Additionally, the benefits of combining all three passive methods were evaluated. Results indicated that among the evaluated PCMs, capric acid demonstrated superior performance. While each passive method studied offers distinct advantages in enhancing thermal performance and achieving energy efficiency, assessing their combined effects revealed significant insights. Specifically, integrating capric acid at the brick's centerline, while simultaneously configuring EPS insulation in the upper cavities and emissivity coating in the lower cavities, yielded superior performance. This configuration significantly reduced inner surface temperature by approximately 6.6 °C and minimized heat flux by about 58.4 % compared to traditional bricks. Achieving energy savings of 56.24 %, this configuration shows potential to enhance both thermal comfort and energy efficiency in building applications.

Abstract:In the context of environmental protection, researches on thermal performance of buildings represent a growing field, most of which use a variety of linked calculating algorithms to maximize performance metrics. However, previous studies have done little to investigated in balancing energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort of industrial buildings. With various combinations of architecture design parameters, this paper aims to optimize the comprehensive thermal performance of clean plants. Matlab software was used for data preparation, deployment, and sampling. Two thousand simulations based on the different combinations were performed using Monte Carlo technique. The most appropriate combinations of sensitive factors were then analyzed to offer a reference for the architecture design, with the uncertainties of the original alternative parameters being substituted by mathematical statistics and data filtering. The result shows that the total thermal discomfort hours (TTD) increase by 14.95% and the total energy consumption (TEC) increases by 35.19% when the heating setpoint temperature is raised from 14 °C to 24 °C. The TTD increase by 3.93% and the TEC decreases by 21.68% when the cooling setpoint temperature is raised from 20 °C to 28 °C, respectively. The findings can contribute to understanding of the parameter combinations enhancing the comprehensive thermal performance of industrial buildings.

Abstract:In this paper, a 3-floors building with capacious spaces was introduced. It has unique shape and all-glass envelope, which worsens the thermotechnical performance of the envelope, deteriorates the indoor thermal comfort. By simulation, the indoor thermal environment of this building can be obtained. Standard Effective Temperature (SET) was adopted to assess the thermal environment of the occupied zones in the building. Three cases were assessed and compared: the original design, the design with some ceiling sunshades and the design with some ceiling and sidewall sunshades. From the comparison, the appropriate building envelope design and air-conditioning system design schemes which satisfy human thermal comfort requirement were obtained. From the case it can be found that, in the architectural design, the application of building simulation takes an important assistant effect. Sometimes this application may be indispensable.

Abstract:Today, the main challenge to world energy policies is to complete the energy demands of society more sustainably without polluting the environment. The application of renewable energy sources is an alternative solution, but they are less efficient compared to conventional sources. The efficient utilization of energy ensuring the minimum losses from the system is an effective way. In this context, properly designed buildings can contribute in minimizing the overall energy demands of society. Generally, window systems are considered a critical part of a building with significantly poor thermal performance. Those must be designed carefully for the building to be energy efficient. The present work takes an opportunity to review several design parameters (window) affecting the annual energy consumption statistics (in terms of cooling and heating loads) for the buildings.
