Abstract:The principle of 4×4 Integer Transform (IT) of H.264 and a fast 1-D algorithm are introduced. And then, a parallel algorithm of 2-D IT which suits for TMS320C64 series is proposed by using Kronecker product. The algorithm is optimized based on the features of VILW and SIMD of TMS320C64 series, and the parallelism is improved.

Abstract:There are two kinds of integer transform in H.264,8×8 integer transform and 4×4 integer transform.This makes hardware design more complex.At the same time,more powerful decoder is required for high definition video application.High performance hardware architecture is proposed for 2D inverse integer transform in H.264.For 4×4 inverse integer transform,four 4×4 blocks in an 8×8 sub-macroblock was reconstructed.Therefore,the 8×8 2D inverse integer transform and 4×4 2D inverse integer transform could have the same architecture.With a new strategy of data storage and pipeline,inverse transform for column data and inverse transform for row data could perform at the same time.On average,32 clocks were needed for processing an 8×8 sub-macroblock.The transpose memory was composed of a two-port 32×32bits SRAM and 8 groups of registers.Compared with former design,the new architecture could reduce 53.7% area of transpose memory.When clocked at 108 MHz,the proposed design can perform real-time inverse transform for high definition video decoder of H.264.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multiple transform coding structure which processes all transforms in H.264/AVC including integer transform, 4times4 and 2times2 Hadamard transforms, and corresponding inverse transforms. In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm in which all transforms are described in identical equations. Additionally, we merges the architecture processing individual transforms into a multiple transform coding architecture according to the proposed fast algorithm and use an interlaced timing schedule to arrange the coding order of each transform. This structure is reconfigurable so as to achieve different data processing rates and therefore, it can be used in H.264/AVC coding systems of various data processing rates. The synthesis result shows that this design can achieve the requirement of real-time processing HD 1080i video at a low operating frequency of 50 MHz.

Abstract:The 4*4 integer transform, as one of the key techniques in H.264 video compression standard, is very important for the whole performance of H.264 CODEC Based on stream processing model, this paper presents an Interleaved Streaming Transform (IST) algorithm for 4*4 integer transform in H.264, and maps it onto Imagine stream processor. Experimental results show that the streaming implementation of IST processes a 4*4 integer transform only in 4.5ns for CIF image format, far beyond the real-time requirement of current video applications. In addition, stream processors can take advantage of their flexibility to use IST widely in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents an intra-frame coding mode decision algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264/AVC transcoding in integer transform domain. The edge direction inside a block is estimated in the integer transform domain to reduce candidate prediction modes. Based on the analysis of the variance of the sixteen subblock DC coefficients inside a macroblock, “transition interval” and “double thresholds” intra prediction size selection are proposed to reduce wrong judgments. According to statistical results of high probability of neighboring blocks having the same intra prediction mode, a decision rule is given to predict the coding mode of the current block from its neighbors. The proposed transcoding algorithm can reduce computation time by more than 75% comparing with the pixel domain cascaded intra-frame transcoder, while maintains similar picture quality and bitrate.

Abstract:Converting MPEG-2 8-tap discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to H.264/AVC 4-tap integer transform (IT) coefficients is one of the indispensable operations for MPEG-2 to H.264 transform domain transcoding. In this paper, we propose a novel transform kernel matrix based on the factorization of DCT to perform this operation directly in transform domain. Furthermore, additional reduction in computation can be obtained by taking advantage of the fact that most of the 8×8 DCT blocks in real video sequences only have nonzero coefficients in the upper left 4×4 quadrant. Relative to Jun Xin’s method, the proposed method saves 16 operations in the worst case and 440 operations in the best case for each 8×8 DCT block. Experimental results also show that the proposed method efficiently reduces the computational cost up to 42.9% with negligible degradation in video quality. Hence, the proposed method can be efficiently used in the real-time and high capacity MPEG-2 to H.264 transform domain transcoding.
A highly parallel VLSI implementation for 8×8 integer transform in H.264/AVC

Abstract:This paper presents a highly parallel cost-effective architecture for 8×8 integer transform for H.264/AVC and AVS. A two dimensional dual port parallel memory scheme is used to support parallel access both in row and column directions. This parallel memory eliminates the need for a transpose circuit. A multiple stages pipeline is designed for the one dimensional transform of the multiplication by the transform matrix which contains only shifts and additions. This can reduce the critical path length and increase throughput. The design is implemented under UMC 0.18um technology. The result gates are 15,526 and the critical path is within 2.5ns. Compared with existing architecture, our design has the advantages in area and speed.

Abstract:The 4times4 integer transforms are adopted in the MPEG-4 AVC /H.264 standard. In this paper, two novel signal flow graphs of the 4times4 forward and inverse transforms for H.264 are proposed. A high-performance reconfigurable 2-D architecture without using transpose memory for the multiple transforms is proposed on the basis of the new SFGs. Our design is implemented with 0.18 um CMOS technology. The proposed design is more efficient than the existing typical designs. Under a clock frequency of 100 Mhz, the architecture allows the real-time processing of 4096times2048 at 60 fps.

Abstract:A high-performance hardware architecture was presented for 2-D inverse integer transform in AVS(Video part).This architecture had two 1-D inverse transform cores and four dual-port SRAMs.The size of each SRAM was 16×16.By controlling the SRAMs,data pre-processing and post-processing were avoided and the depth of pipeline was decreased.When vertical inverse transform was performed,the order of data processing was changed,which ensured that four dual-port SRAMs would not influence processing speed.37 clocks were needed for processing 8×8 data by this architecture.Compared to conventional architecture,it could save 28% area on the condition of the same processing speed.The experiment shows that this architecture is suitable for HDTV’s decoder which adopts AVS as video standard.

Abstract:In this paper an optimized implementation of real-time MPEG4 encoder based on TMS320DM642 DSP of Texas Instruments, Inc. is presented. The optimization techniques include algorithm optimization and data memory access efficiency in order to reduce the complexity and improve the software parallelism. Currently, the encoder can deal with the CIF video sequence at about 25 f/s.

Abstract:Hybrid transform and scalar quantization is a key component in ITU-T H.264, and mathematic analysis and decomposition are elaborately made for its hardware implementation, the calculation process is simplified, all time-consuming and hardware expensive multiplication and division are avoided effectively. A new block parallel VLSI architecture mainly containing a 2D direct hybrid transform engine and a full wiring 52-level scalar quantizer is proposed. It is very suitable for pipeline acceleration, and the block throughput rate can reach 156 M/s with one register row inserted, which can satisfy 4096times2304@150 Hz digital video coding in real-time easily, even all macroblocks are predicted with intra_16times16 mode.

Abstract:The 4times4 integer transforms are adopted in the MPEG-4 AVC /H.264 standard. In this paper, two novel signal flow graphs of the 4times4 forward and inverse transforms for H.264 are proposed. A new dynamic reconfigurable architecture without using transpose memory for the multiple transforms is proposed on the basis of the new SFGs. Our design is implemented with 0.18 mum CMOS technology. Under a clock frequency of 200 Mhz, the architecture allows the real-time processing of 4096times2048 at 30 fps with the area cost of 5140 gates and the power dissipation of 15.64 mW.

Abstract:The very-long-instruction-word architecture is widely used for DSP. In AVS coding process, the prediction residual and integer DCT are frequently called and the methods of optimizing the loops are significant for reducing coding time. Based on the VLIW character, the paper analyzes the optimization methods to accelerate the speed of prediction residual and integer DCT. The AVS prediction residual and integer DCT modules are optimized and simulated on the platform of TMS320DM6446. The experiments show that the instruction cycles are reduced by about 71% and 60% for prediction residual and 8 Ã 8 integer DCT separately.

Abstract:In H.264/AVC, an integer 4×4 transform is used instead of traditional float DCT transform due to its low complexity and exact reversibility. Combined with the normalization for the integer transform together, a division-free quantization scheme is used in H.264/AVC. H.264/AVC is the most outstanding video coding standard at far. But at first H.264/AVC targets to low bit-rate coding, and almost all experimental results of the proposals for H.264/AVC are tested at low bit-rate. In the near, experimental results show that 8×8 transform can further improve the coding efficiency on high definition (HD) coding. In this paper a kind of 8×8 low complexity integer transforms are studied and corresponding quantization schemes are developed for HD coding. Compared with 4×4 transform/prediction based coder, the proposed 8×8 based coder can achieve better performance on HD coding while with much lower encoder/decoder complexity.
A Unified 4/8/16/32-Point Integer IDCT Architecture for Multiple Video Coding Standards

Abstract:4 or 8-point IDCT are widely used in traditional video coding standards. However larger size (16/32-point) IDCT has been proposed in the next generation video standard such as HEVC. To fulfill this requirement, this work proposes a fast computational algorithm of large size integer IDCT. A unified VLSI architecture for 4/8/16/32-point integer IDCT is also proposed accordingly. It can support the following video standards: MPEG-2/4, H.264, AVS, VC-1 and HEVC. Multiplier less MCM (Multiple Constant Multiplication) is used for 4/8-point IDCT. The regular multipliers and sharing technique are used for 16/32-point IDCT. The transpose memory uses SRAM instead of the traditional register array in order to further reduce the hardware overhead. It can support real-time decoding of 4K×2K (4096×2048) 30fps video sequence at 191MHz working frequency, with 93K gate count and 18944-bit SRAM. We suggest a normalized criterion called design efficiency to compare with previous works. It shows that this design is 31% more efficient than previous work.
High Performance Multi Transform Coding Hardware Architecture Design for H.264/AVC

Abstract:In hardware architecture design,in order to increase the hardware utilization and minimize the hardware cost,and maintain the real-time coding at the same time,a multiple transform coding architecture which could process all the transforms in H.264/AVC was proposed.By simplifying these transforms and exploring their similarities,the proposed design merges the architectures processing individual transforms into a multi-transform coding architecture.Simulation and synthesis show that compared with other designs,this design has lower hardware cost,and can meet the requirement of real-time coding/decoding HD 1080i(1 920×1 088@60 fps) video at 50 MHz,which helps to reduce the power consumption.This architecture can be easily adjusted to achieve different data processing rates,so that it can be embedded into H.264/AVC coding systems of various data processing rates.

Abstract:H.264 High Profile proposes the new 8×8 integer transform which achieves average bit-rate reduction of around 10% for HD material.This paper presents an efficient architecture for H.264 multiple block-size inverse transform.2-D transform decomposition and common matrix operation extraction were applied to design general processing elements to simplify the implementation of transforms.The proposed architecture is both area-efficient(4807gates) and high performance(can provide real-time decoding of 4096×2048@60fps High Profile in 150MHz,1.2G pixels/s data throughput rate,using TSMC 0.13 μm).This paper supporting all of the H.264 high profile transforms is the most efficient one,compared with the existing designs with the Data Throughput rate per Unit Area(DTUA) adopted as the comparison index.

Abstract:The bandwidth saving of H.264 compared with MPEG-2 provides a big motivation to migrate to H.264, and this inspires the research on MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding. We proposed two fast algorithms for MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding in DCT domain. The first one synthesizes a H.264 integer DCT block for motion compensation from four intersected integer DCT blocks using only a few additions and shift operations. The second algorithm shows our rapid solution on dealing with the difference of scale in the integer DCT domain before and after the quantization procedure and replace the division operations with multiplications and shift operations. They are very useful in MPEG to H.264 DCT domain transcoder designing, especially for embedded RISC processors.

Abstract:Data compression is a kind of power concentrating process. Complex data could be transferred into eigenvalues and sparse data concentrated directly. DCT is a very efficient transform but hard to implement. 8×8 integer transform derived here is easily mapping into a parallel accelerating system, and proved to earn a better performance than existing 4×4 ones. This work implemented 8×8 integer algorithm on the REmus system, a novel reconfigurable system designed by Tsinghua, verified the architecture with several media applications. A 46.0% speedup comparing with 4×4 integer ones and a 60.1% average boost comparing with other processors are achieved. Different dividing of frames also has an impact on other algorithms, such as deblocking, the most significant process in h264 codec. It gets 62.5% boost, too. Comparing with 4×4 ones, when quantity level is smaller than 10, 8×8 restores better pictures and a 10% improvement is always found on compress ratios.

Abstract:Converting MPEG-2 8-tap discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to H.264/AVC 4-tap integer transform (IT) coefficients is one of the indispensable operations for transcoding MPEG-2 to H.264 in the transform domain. Motion information in the input MPEG-2 sequence should be reused as much as possible to speed up the transcoding process. Motivated by this, we first exploits the distribution information of non-zero DCT coefficients to classify the input 8times8 DCT block into three types, then proposes a fast method to perform coefficients conversion based on the type of 8times8 DCT block. The simulation results show that the proposed method significantly reduces the computational complexity, while maintains almost the same video quality compared with the existing method. Hence, it can be efficiently used in the real time transform domain MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding

Abstract:The paper discusses an implementation of MPEG-4 simple profile video real-time encoder based on TMS320DM642.For the real-time requirement,after analyzing the hardware architecture and instruction characteristics of DM642,we present the implementation of video encoder and optimization methods.We achieve real-time encoder of CIF(352×288) pictures,which demonstrates that the high performance of DM642 can meet the requirement of video real-time encoder.
