Abstract:In the current paper, the major functional components in grain of rice were briefly introduced and research progresses in rice breeding for high Iron, Zinc content, amino acids, LCG, and novel endosperms were briefly reviewed. Abstract:Grain shape is an important trait that affects the yield and quality of rice, so it is necessary to understand the genetic regulation mechanism of grain shape to improve rice yield and quality. Grain shape is characterized by a combination of grain length, grain width, grain thickness, and grain length-to-width ratio, belonging to quantitative traits, which is controlled by different genetic systems, such as embryo, endosperm and maternal plant. With the rapid development of rice functional genomics and re-sequencing technology, more than 400 QTLs related to rice grain shape have been located at present, and at least 60 genes associated with rice grain traits have been identified. Some rice grain shape regulation pathways were identified, including phytohormones, the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, epigenetic modification, the G protein signaling pathways. In this review, we systematically summarize and sort out the research progress of the cloning and functional analysis of rice grain shape genes, and evaluate the utilization value of rice grain shape genes in rice breeding for high yield and good quality.

Abstract:The major approaches of molecular breeding are transgenic and marker-assisted selection breeding.In the present study,the biological base of molecular breeding of rice were stated from several aspects including yield,adaptability,quality,resistance and heterosis.Some important achievements were enumerated as molecular breeding of rice progressed.As a result of the sequencing of rice genome,map-based cloning of genes controlling the important agronomic traits,the gradually perfected transgenic technology,the rapid development of bioinformatics,and the development of software in simulating breeding,breeding by molecular design has increasingly become an important method of rice breeding.

Abstract:Wild rice has adapted to weather and unfavorable environments under natural selection. It has been well recognized as a natural gene bank that conserves a lot of specific genes presently not available for extinct in the cultivated rice. Abstract:Rice is a staple food for half of the worlds population mostly in Asia. Productivity of rice has largely been improved since the Green Revolution in 1960s. Further improvement of rice yield is necessary to keep pace with population growth, which is a challenging task for breeders. This book, Rice - Germplasm, Genetics and Improvement, as its name implies, comprehensively reviews current knowledge in germplasm exploration, genetic basis of complex traits, and molecular breeding strategies in rice. In the germplasm part, we highlight the application of wild rice in rice breeding. In the genetics part, most of the complex traits related with yield, disease, quality have been covered. In the improvement part, Chinese experiences in hybrid rice breeding have been summarized together with many molecular breeding practices scattering in different chapters.

Abstract:Amylose content is a key determinant of eating quality of rice. With the characteristics of fluffy texture, glossy appearance when cooked, remaining soft when cooled and excellent puffing ability, the low-amylose rice with amylose content 5-15% could be served as not only cooked rice directly, but also good material for convenience, mixed rice and puffing foods.Current status on characterization, inheritance, molecular mechanism and breeding of lowamylose content rice was reviewed in this paper, strategy of related researches in the era of glymics was mainly discussed furthermore. The future research should focus on screening and enhancing the germplasm, further elucidating the molecular mechanism on mutation of low amylose content, utilizing the genes independent of Wx on low-amylose content rice breeding program, and developing high quality functional rice cultivars for special usage through pyramiding low amylose gene and other special quality genes.

Abstract:Eating-quality is one of the most important qualities for rice. With the development and application of molecular biology techniques, studies of its genetic and molecular bases have made great progresses. This paper summarizes these progresses from the following aspects: the relation between starch component and structure and cooked rice texture, gene location and QTL analysis, the key enzymes involved in the starch synthesis and corresponding gene expression and regulation on starch quality. The possible approaches to further research are discussed.

Abstract:1. Introduction Rice is a staple food for 3.2 billion people. The food security threat that shook many Asian countries in 2008 still looms, because farmers are facing the challenge of producing more rice with fewer resources of water, land, and inputs. The targets of rice improvement have changed from high yield alone to the combined targets of high yield, good quality, balanced nutrition, health safety, and sustainable production, especially in China [1]. Breed-ing rice cultivars like green super rice (GSR) will meet such targets and increase the profit of rice production.

Abstract:Amylose content is a key determinant of eating quality of rice. With content ranging from 5% to 15%, the low-amylose rice is characterized by fluffy texture, glossy appearance of the cooked rice, soft texture of cooled rice, and excellentexpansibility for food processing, which can be used as not only cooked rice directly, but also as good material for instant, mixedrice and expanded foods. Abstract:Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important food crop consumed by the developing world. Whereas the total production and yield stability is largely affected by the environmental stresses. Drought stress affects about 45% of the world's rice area. Drought stress has been drawn a great attention in the past half century due to its frequently occurrence and costly impacts. Drought stress affects plant at molecular, biochemical, physiological and phenotypic levels. Conventional breeding method of singly pedigree selection was commonly used to breed a numbers of drought-tolerant rice varieties since Green Revolution. As plant molecular biology progresses rapidly, hundreds of drought tolerant QTLs/genes were discovered and tested in rice crop under both indoor and field condition. A number of drought tolerant rice varieties were developed through mark-assisted selection and genetically engineered approaches. Several genes were introgressed into elite germplasm to develop commercially accepted drought tolerant varieties. This review provids up-to-dated information on proof-of-concept genes and breeding methods in molecular breeding eras, which could be used for rice breeders to develop drought-tolerant rice variety.

Abstract:Plant functional traits have an essential role in community formation and ecosystem function. Unlike natu-ral ecosystems, agroecosystems are affected by natural conditions and human management. Plant (i.e., crop)functional traits in the agroecosystems are thus shaped by natural and human selection. We reviewed the development of functional trait research, focusing on crop functional traits, research methods of agroecosystems based on traits, and the application of functional traits in agriculture. We then elaborated on the effect of domestication on crop trait trade-offs, the relationship between community functional structure and agroecosystem services, and the application of functional traits in weed management, cover cropping, and intercropping systems. Future research directions of crop functional traits include enriching the types of agroecosystems and crop species in studies, buil-ding up a crop functional trait database, and focusing on agroecosystem multifunctionality.

Abstract:Rice is a major food crop in the world. Owing to the shortage of rural labor and the development of agricultural mechanization, direct seeding has become the main method of rice cultivation. At present, the main problems faced by direct seeding of rice are low whole seedling rate, serious weeds, and easy lodging of rice in the middle and late stages of growth. Along with the rapid development of functional genomics, the functions of a large number of genes have been confirmed, including seed vigor, low-temperature tolerance germination, low oxygen tolerance growth, early seedling vigor, early root vigor, resistance to lodging, and other functional genes related to the direct seeding of rice. A review of the related functional genes has not yet been reported. In this study, the genes related to direct seeding of rice are summarized to comprehensively understand the genetic basis and mechanism of action in direct seeding of rice and to lay the foundation for further basic theoretical research and breeding application research in direct seeding of rice.

Abstract:The genetic variability among rice varieties and genetic control of iron content in rice grain were briefly summarized. Progresses in breeding for rice enriched with iron content were reviewed based on improving absolute high content of iron or its bioavailability, including traditional breeding, induced mutation and genetic engineering method. The problems and prospects through induced mutation in the dense iron rice research were discussed.

Abstract:Agriculture has been evolving along with the development of human society. Agricultural germplasm resources play a crucial role in supporting the development of human civilization (Doebley et al., 2006;Tian et al., 2021). With the change of agricultural population structure, there are new requirements for germplasm resources (Yu and Li, 2021). Combined with global climate change, crops should also be able to cope with the challenges of environmental stresses and maintain a stable increase in production (Shahzad et al., 2021). Subsequently, rice has new breeding requirements in production, quality, and yield (Zeng et al., 2017). This Research Topic covers multiple approaches to exploit rice germplasm, excavate and utilize the key genes, and understand the molecular basis of yield component traits.The classical mapping and cloning technique still play an important role in the discovery of new genetic loci.
