Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a new method is developed to investigate the anti-penetration performance of the steel/nylon sandwich plate, which incorporates experimental method with numerical simulation. Constitutive parameters of the steel/nylon sandwich plate are measured by the Hopkinson Pressure Bar, and LS-DYNA is applied to simulate the penetration process of projectiles into the sandwich plate. The dynamic response, failure modes and energy absorption coefficients are obtained, and the penetration tests are conducted to verify the numerical method. Results show: results obtained by experimental and numerical methods have very high agreement, which demonstrates that the method proposed can be applicable for predicting the anti-penetration performance of the sandwich plate.

Abstract:Sandwich plates are widely used in the engineering domain and are extensively studied by researchers for their special performances. Among them, the sandwich plate with coordinate-dependent material parameters has excellent vibration isolation performance. However, there are few effective and convenient analytical methods for solving the dynamic response of this type of sandwich plate. To solve this problem, an equivalent spring-based model for the dynamic analysis of the sandwich plate is proposed in this paper. Assuming that the sandwich plate is a linear elastic structure, and considering the core plate as equivalent springs, whose stiffness coefficients are derived based on the classical elasticity theory and Kirchhoff hypothesis. Besides, displacement solutions of base and constrained plates of the sandwich plate in the x , y and z directions are expressed as a two-dimensional Fourier series supplemented with several one-dimensional Fourier series, respectively. Then, according to the orthogonality of trigonometric functions and selectivity of Dirac functions, the displacements of the sandwich plate are solved accurately. By comparing with available analytical and numerical results, the proposed method is proven to have excellent performance in dealing with the sandwich plate with coordinate-dependent material parameters. Finally, the dynamic characteristics and vibration isolation performance of the inhomogeneous sandwich plate are discussed. The results show that the proposed method can be used to design the inhomogeneous sandwich plate and improve their vibration isolation performance significantly.

Abstract:Athree-layer composite plate element is developed for finite element modeling and vibration analysis of sandwich plate with frequency-dependent viscoelastic material core. The plate element is quadrilateral element bounded by four-node with 7-degree-of-freedom per node. The frequency-dependent characteristics of viscoelastic material parameters are described using the Biot model. The method of identifying the parameters of the Biot model is given. By introducing auxiliary coordinates, the Biot model is combined with the finite element equation of the viscoelastic sandwich plate. Through a series of mathematical transformations, the equation is transformed into a standard second-order steady linear system equation form to simplify the solution process. Finally, the vibration characteristics of the viscoelastic sandwich plate are analyzed and experimentally studied. The results show that the method in this paper is correct and reliable, and it has certain reference and application value for solving similar engineering vibration problems.

Abstract:Two finite element formulations using different laminate plate theories are developed for the elastic-viscoelastic-elastic sandwich plates. A critical comparison and assessment between them are provided. The dynamic characteristics, namely, the natural frequencies and associated loss factors of the elastic-viscoelastic-elastic sandwich plates are calculated using the two finite element models. The two models are validated through the numerical example and experiment results. Comparisons of the accuracy and computational efficiency of the two finite element models are given. The results show that both of the two finite element models have good accuracy in predicting the natural frequencies and the loss factors with different efficiency. The works in this article have instructive significance in the calculation and application of the elastic-viscoelastic-elastic sandwich structures.

Abstract:In the traditional analysis schemes of the composite sandwich structures the core is firstly simplified as an equivalent anisotropic material and then modeled by the plates and shells theories. Its main disadvantage is that the equivalent core will result in large equivalent error especially in the key area and the thick core will further reduce the analysis accuracy of the plates and shells theories. Therefore, a layerwise/solid-element method (LW/SE) is proposed in this paper, in which the layerwise theory is used to model the behavior of the composite laminated facesheets while the eight-noded solid element is employed to discretize the core. Three models, the full model, the local model and the equivalent model, are presented to model the core. Several numerical examples are investigated and the static analysis and free vibration analysis of the composite sandwich plates are tested. The results of proposed method are in good agreement with those of 3D finite element model. A detailed comparative study is conducted to investigate the performance of three modeling schemes for static analysis and free vibration analysis problems.

Abstract:A novel four-node quadrilateral element with eleven degrees of freedom per node is approximated using the C 1 -order non-conforming Hermite and Lagrange functions and the novel refined Quasi-3D plate hypothesis for buckling and free vibration analysis of non-uniform thickness bi-directional functionally graded sandwich porous (BFGSP) plates resting on variable elastic foundations (VEF) in a hygro-thermal environment. Material and mechanical properties that change in both the length and thickness directions with three different laws of porosity, which are made up of a fully ceramic core layer and two bi-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) material ones, may be used a lot in the aerospace engineering and military industries. In order to analyze the buckling and free oscillation behaviors shown by the plate with arbitrary boundary conditions, a series of mathematical methods created in Matlab's software are used. The computation program's correctness is verified by comparing numerical findings to dependable assertions. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the impact of factors on the buckling and free oscillation responses is conducted. The findings reveal that the novel porosity patterns, the hygro-thermal environment, the elastic medium characteristics, and the boundary conditions have a substantial impact on the mechanical behaviors of the non-uniform thickness 2D-FG sandwich porous plates. The results of this article can be used as a useful reference for engineers when calculating and designing structures of this type in engineering practice.

Analysis on Reinforce Concrete Sandwich Wall-Panel Using Nonlinear Finite Element Method

Abstract:By using nonlinear finite element program ANSYS,the mechanical behavior of the reinforce concrete sandwich wall-panels is analyzed.The calculated resultes,such as the characters of the deformation and stress distribution of oblique tie bars under vertical loads,are discussed in detail.The influence on the mechanics behavior of reinforce concrete sandwich wall-panels,due to the changes of the amount and the yielding strength of the oblique tie bars,are analyzed.The study reveals that the two concrete wall-panels connected by oblique tie bars can work very well as an integral plate.The outside wall-panel will not only protect the isulation layer,but also strengthen the stability of the inside wall-panel.The mechanical behavior of the reinforce concrete sandwich wall-panels are greatly affected by the amount of the oblique tie bars.The concrete sandwich wall-panels work together better along with the amount increase and the yielding stress upgrading of the oblique tie bars.

Abstract:Electrical modeling and vibration control analysis of piezoelectric structronic systems are of great significance in design of new smart structures. However, studies of electrical modeling of piezoelectric structronic plate systems by using voltage signals to evaluate real-time dynamic displacements are scarce in open literatures. An equivalent circuit model is presented to simulate the piezoelectric structronic plate/sensor/actuator system with simply supported boundary conditions, so that the actual physical model could be replaced by a single circuit chip in the future. By means of the finite difference (FD) discretization method, the higher order dynamic partial differential equations (PDE) of plate’s structure/sensor signal/control system are transformed to finite difference equations and further represented by electronic components. Electrical simulation model of the piezoelectric structronic plate systems based on finite difference discretization is established. Meanwhile, an equivalent circuit design program is proposed. Control characteristics of the structronic plate model are analyzed and the control effects are compatible with the results of the numerical model in relevant references. Thus, numerical simulation result presented in this paper can provide a reference for the further research of electrical modeling of more complex piezoelectric structronic plate systems.

Abstract:The mechanical behaviour of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) connections under axial tension, eccentric tension and in-plane bending is extensively studied by the experimentally validated finite element analysis (FEA) in this paper. A total of 336 connections with a wide range of parameters on geometrical configurations, material properties and load positions was conducted to investigate (a) the general applicability of the experimental conclusion for the governing limit state, (b) the shear stress profile on the failure face and (c) the design equations based on fracture analytical models under various loading conditions. FEA extended the validity of experimental conclusion that the only governing limit state was punching shear failure instead of the deformation limit of 3% chord diameter (D). With an aim of proposing design equations based on ductile fracture mechanics, the stress distributions on the fracture failure face and the inner concrete were investigated by the parametric study, and then were adopted in the analytical models. Finally, design equations based on semi-theoretical models for the ultimate strength of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled CHS connections under three investigated loads were proposed. It is found the connection-capacity predictions agreed with both test and FEA results well.

Abstract:Sandwich structures are susceptible to wrinkling when subject to in-plane compressive loads, which threatens structural safety. To accurately investigate the failure behavior, the following work is to be required. Firstly, the wrinkling behavior of sandwich plates is a typical three-dimensional (3D) issue. To consider a 3D effect, an enhanced higher-order finite element formulation including transverse normal strain has been proposed for the first time. Utilizing the proposed finite element formulation, a refined quadrilateral element model has been constructed. Secondly, the buckling and wrinkling behaviors of square sandwich plates have been investigated. The performance of the proposed model has been evaluated by comparing it with the quasi-3D solutions, the results obtained from the 3D finite element method (3D-FEM), and other models. The differences between the buckling and wrinkling failure behaviors have been carefully explained. Thirdly, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling and wrinkling deformation have been explored in detail. By utilizing the proposed model, the translation mechanism between the buckling and wrinkling deformations of sandwich plates under different boundary conditions has been revealed, which can help other investigators to well understand the buckling and wrinkling behaviors of sandwich plates. It can be shown that the wrinkling behaviors of thick sandwich plates occur earlier than the buckling behaviors when the thickness ratio of core to face panel is more than 35. Besides, it also can be shown that the buckling and wrinkling loads decrease gradually with the relaxation of the boundary restriction.

Abstract:This study presents a new higher-order refined analysis model for static and free vibration analysis of a sandwich plate with soft functionally graded material core. The governing equations are derived from equilibrium differential equations of motions. The accuracy and convergence of the present model and numerical solution are validated versus available results. Variable length width ratios, thickness ratios between skins and core and span-to-thickness of sandwich plates have been studied. Obtained results show that suggested model can achieve greater accuracy for sandwich plates with soft functionally graded material core, as compared to existing functionally graded sandwich plate analysis models and models based on finite element method. Finally, parametric study has been carried out to investigate influence of volume fraction distribution, thickness to side ratio and material properties on the plate bending and free vibration.

Abstract:This study presents an alternative and easy-to-use model to produce accurately higher-order frequencies of composite and sandwich plates. The proposed model only contains the independent displacement variables, and compatible conditions of displacements and stresses at interfaces of adjacent layers can be met beforehand. Exact solution is firstly utilized to appraise capability of present model. Subsequently, a triangular element based on the proposed model has been also established for dynamic analysis of sandwich plates with complex boundary conditions, where the refined element approach is utilized to conquer compatible requirement of first derivatives of deflection at shared edges of adjacent elements. To strictly evaluate the models, tests of natural frequencies for sandwich plates composed of aluminium face sheets and PMI foam core are carried out, which are less reported in literature. Compared to testing data, the good performance of the proposed model can be illustrated. This work can also demonstrate that compatible conditions of transverse shear stresses at interfaces have a significant impact on accurate prediction of higher-order frequencies of composite and sandwich plates, but model fulfilling compatible conditions of stresses might also fail to produce precisely higher-order frequencies.

Abstract:Finite element numerical models are developed by using the general-purpose finite element software, ANSYS, to simulate and analyze the mechanical behavior of beam-column end-plate connections with different types and details, and the corresponding tests are carried out to validate the finite element models. This finite element model’s accuracy and efficiency are verified by a comprehensive comparison of the modeling and testing results. Hence it can be applied for further finite element parametric analysis on the end-plate connections with different types and details. Moreover, the finite element analysis provides some extra valuable results which are difficult to obtain in the tests, including the principal stress flow of the connections, the distributions of the pressure and the frictional force between the end-plate and column flange under the bolt pretension force and the joint moment.

Abstract:The orthotropic steel deck is more and more widely used in bridges. But with the economic development, fatigue cracks in orthotropic steel bridge decks occur with the increasing of traffic volume. The sandwich plates method for strengthening fatigue cracks in orthotropic steel bridge decks is a relatively new method for bridge strengthening. This paper gives a brief introduction of the sandwich plates method and its application. Using finite element software ANSYS and ABAQUS, several kinds of elements were compared to obtain a reasonable and economical finite element model, which is suitable for simulating the sandwich plates. Vehicle load was applied according to General Code for Design of Highway Bridges and Culverts. The sandwich plates method was proved effective through the analysis of non-strengthened and strengthened orthotropic steel bridge decks. The stresses of the steel bridge decks were greatly reduced due to the sandwich plates strengthening method. In addition, parametric analysis of the elastic modulus of the middle layer was carried out, and the results indicted its effects on orthotropic decks' bearing behavior. Finally, a reasonable method for strengthening fatigue cracks in orthotropic steel bridge decks was put forward, so as to guide experimental research, as well as engineering design and practical operations of strengthening steel bridges.

Abstract:Combining the improved C-0 plate element using high-order zigzag theories and the beam element degenerated from the plate element, a type of analysis model for the sandwich lattice composite panel was developed. Compared with the actual test results including the mid-span deflections and the surface sheet normal stresses, the outstanding of that method was presented through numeric calculation. The results showed that the model has great potential to become an excellent and highly efficient analysis and design tool for sandwich lattice composite panel to avoid the conventional three-dimension hybrid element model, which usually may lead to the complex program establishment, and the coupling degrees of freedom among the different types of elements.
Mechanical Model of Steel Plate Composite Shear Walls

Abstract:Based on concepts of mechanics,a mechanical model of novel type of steel plate composite shear wall is presented.The novel type of structure is formed by steel plate shear wall and T-shaped solid-web composite columns.Flexural stiffness of steel beams,lateral stiffness of the T-shaped solid-web composite columns,shear stiffness of steel plate composite shear wall and shear stiffness of beam-column connection are taken into account in the mechanical model.And the equivalent damping between steel plate and boundary is considered.Based on the deformation features of structures and the calculation hypothesis,the lateral stiffness model and the energy dissipation model of structures are developed.Meanwhile,the calculation equations of elastic ultimate and plastic ultimate of shear strength of structures are set up.The theoretical analysis results inosculate better with the results of experiment.The comparison between the result calculated from the formula and the experimental result shows that the calculation precision is high enough to meet the demand of theoretical analysis.The difference,including equivalent model,stress states,manufacturing defect and installation error,between the formula and the experiment has been further discussed.

Abstract:In order to enhance the mechanical behavior of ultra-light lattice composite structure with high strength,especially its anti-buckling ability,a new hierarchical isogrid sandwich structure was designed.An equivalent continuum method was proposed to put forward the equivalent calculation theory of hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate and to predict the effective elastic modulus and bending rigidity of the stretching-dominated hierarchical structure.Elastic buckling failure load and strength in material failure mode of the hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate in edgewise compression were analyzed.Based on these theoretical models,failure mode map of the hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate under edgewise compression was plotted to point out the corresponding relationships between the structure failure modes and the dimensions of the hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate.Results show that hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate with I-shaped cross-section is stiffer and stronger in buckling resistance compared with isogrid plate with traditional rectangular cross-section.The property of hierarchical isogrid sandwich plate is superior as a kind of ultra-light lattice structure with high strength.

Abstract:The mechanical principle of the Vierendeel Sandwich Plate is to excavate the web of the thick plate evenly to reduce the dead weight of the structure. It is suitable for large span building roof structure. The plate is composed of surface plate, upper rib, lower rib and short column (shear key). The governing equations of the Vierendeel Sandwich Plate are established by the variational method. The stress is regarded as an independent variable, the energy function is established, and the stress result is taken as a constraint condition by using Lagrange multipliers. The deflection equation of the Vierendeel Sandwich Plate can be obtained in a similar form to that obtained by Reissner and Liaw. An example is given to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that by considering the membrane force of the equivalent plate and redefining the physical constants of the Vierendeel Sandwich Plate, the existing solutions of the Reissner equation for single layer sandwich with an isotropic core or Liaw equation for a multi-layer sandwich with an orthotropic core can be extended to the Vierendeel Sandwich Plate. The developed theory is an extension of the theory given in the sandwich plate.
