Abstract:A usable website is a key to ensuring user satisfaction whiles an unusable website brings about frustration and user dissatisfaction. Usability testing has been identified as a great way to check how usable products are to users. This is however ignored by many designers during the designing stage of products such as websites. This in the long run makes the user experience difficulties, errors, and frustration because the product was not created with the user needs in mind. Usability testing is a great way to explore the needs of users and also identify problems and challenges that users encounter while using a product. Involving users in usability testing helps to produce user-centered websites. This study therefore is an attempt to examine the Jiangsu University English Library Website which was designed for international students. Thus the study seeks to identify the needs of the international students as well as problems the users face whiles using the academic library website by involving them in the usability test. A user evaluation usability test with the Morae software was used in this study to analyze data. The study involves twenty international student participants of whom ten were from Asian Countries outside China and the other ten were from African countries and compared usability issues encountered by the groups when using the JUELW. According to the rule of the thumb 5 users are enough to help explore the usability issues. This study therefore serves as a guide for various libraries to use while conducting usability tests for their users and also makes recommendation for libraries to consider when designing library websites for their users especially international student.

Abstract:In this paper, a brief review was made of the research work abroad in the aspect of evaluation of hypertext usability, and an account was given of the two main methods for evaluating the hypertext usability. One of them was proposed by Blustein etc., focusing on measuring the quality of hypertext links, and the other was proposed by Smith, focusing on route measurement. The paper also discussed the advantage and limitation of these two methods.

Abstract:The library in the institutions of higher learning is the special stack room to collect literature of its own.It is of great significance to show the result of running school,to keep up complete data and to form a characteristic collection.By taking University of Zhejiang Science and Technology(ZUST)as an example,we analyze the existing problems in the library construction of the newly-built institutions of higher learning and define the scope of the library collection.Thus several methods are advanced to strengthen both its direction and initiative to turn the data base resources into the school's special collection resources as well as to grasp the timing node to collect library materials.

Abstract:This paper makes a survey of 50university library websites combined with the relevant literature,and analyses the inadequacies of the current library site.It is not to design a site with the user's point of view,with no attention to detail,and user experience is not high,and so making library website not ease to use.The article describes the details of the web interface design principles based on user experience combined with practical experience,focuses on the five parts of the design principles of the guidance function,learning,site search,personalized service and leave the site,in order to play on the library website design serve as a stimulus,and make the library website design more user-friendly and easy to use.

Abstract:Firstly,this paper briefly introduces the theories of users' experience and usability,and clarifies the methodology and subjects of user experience investigation in this program.It proposes usability design scheme from three aspects of display mechanisms for webpage information,guiding mechanisms for user behavior,and preventive and corrective mechanisms for user error behavior,in order to improve the level of user experience when using Tsinghua mobile library.Combining with the investigation results,it analyses users' satisfaction degree towards these schemes and tests the necessity to carry them out.Finally,it presents usability design principles of the mobile library website on the basis of the experience summarized from the design and investigation processes and research achievements in the mobile applications at home and abroad.

Abstract:Campus website in university is the extension of campus culture on the network, which is one of the most direct and effective means to improve university popularity in the information society. From the perspective of communication and information architecture theory, research on the development and construction of campus website in university plays a very important role for promoting the university to the outside and strengthening the internal and external communication. First, we introduce basic theories including mass communication, uses and gratifications and information architecture. Then based on these theories, we conduct basic research on the campus website, find out effective communication ways, comb out website problems in the dissemination process, and as a basis for reference provide ideas and methods for the development of communication strategies of campus websites. Finally, we analyze and summarize interfaces, content and services of campus websites, and propose the design method and implementation technology solutions of campus website construction. The above contents open up a new way for the study of campus website, also broaden this kind of research fields, and they are the important supplements to the website communication studies with certain innovation.

Abstract:This paper investigates the homepage construction of university branch libraries(UBLs) of 10 Chinese and foreign universities by applying the typical survey method.By comparing the similarities and differences of the UBL homepages in their construction form,functionality,and content of services,the successful experience in the UBL homepage construction is concluded.It is suggested that Chinese UBL homepage construction can be developed and improved in some aspects including highlighting the subject navigation functionality,establishing a communicative and interactive platform for patrons.

Abstract:According to the problems existed in the higher education evaluation,such as too much administration,quantitative,formalization,trends of convergence and lack of personalization,we analyze the main reasons caused the problems using the comparison method and draw on the theories and methods of education evaluation.We then propose four suggestions: use of the ternary evaluation instead of dual evaluation;use of the "six main elements" evaluation system;with the evaluation purpose as the leading of evaluation;and the establishment of the common quality standards and personal quality standards.To integrate the common evaluation with the individual evaluation,we should clarify the purpose of evaluation and establish different evaluation standards according to the different institutes and departments,different majors and every student's personality.At the same time,we should extend the time length of evaluation,foster a relaxed environment,improve the professional level of fine evaluation,and establish an independent and authoritative evaluation institution to ensure that the evaluation is fair,reasonable,and authoritative.

Abstract:"Information Commons" is becoming more prevalent in the academic libraries in North America universities. It is breaching the shackles of traditional library services and winning more users by its characteristics such a"sone-stop shopping"、"seamless access"and "coordinative learning". JiangWan District Library of Fudan University is just completed its construction,in which the authors plan to construct an IC. Abstract:Library plays an important role in the teaching and scientific research of university.This is the core competence of university libraries.In this paper,an evaluation indicator system for library in universities is proposed from the view of resource and ability in core competence field.A three-dimensional evaluation model is presented as well as its projection analysis.Optimized point method is further given to evaluate several libraries.Then this method is applied to a demonstration of 10 libraries in domestic famous universities.The conclusion is that library staff is the bottleneck to the core competence of library in universities.The solution is also given in the end.

Abstract:Besides indexes which were widely used by former link analysis research,this paper proposed three new indexes- portal index,return rate of homepage and link optimization index to evaluate homepage ' s link structure.Using those indexes a comparative research on link structure of top 20 universities ' library websites in China and America was made.In the end of this research,Gray Related Analysis method was used to give a link structure rank of university library websites in each country.

Abstract:Digital libraries must reach out to users from all walks of life, serving information needs at all levels. To do this, they must attain high standards of usability over an extremely broad audience. This paper details the evolution of one important digital library component as it has grown in functionality and usefulness over several years of use by a live, unrestricted community. Central to its evolution have been user studies, analysis of use patterns, and formative usability evaluation. We extrapolate that all three components are necessary in the production of successful digital library systems.

Abstract:This paper firstly analyzes the relation between search engine evaluation and usability analysis. Based on the characteristics of the three stages of information retrieval by search engine, the demand of usability evaluation is given, and the evaluation hierarchical model on the usability of search engine is constructed based on the four foundations for the choice of evaluation indicators. Then the weights of indicators are accounted by Delphi method, and a valuable search engine usability evaluation system is provided.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the usefulness of digital library (DL) resources and the value of multidisciplinary databases among students. The study discussed perception and usage of digital databases, level of satisfaction, impact on users, factors affecting accessing digital databases, and problems in usage of digital databases. Design/methodology/approach: The survey research method was used to collect data for this study. A multi-method approach was used. The data was analyzed via SPSS (13.0). Findings: The findings reveal that most of the respondents (total mean value = 4.33, 4.26, 3.86) used DL resources for research purposes in order to fulfil their thesis/dissertation and course work requirement. A total mean value of 4.156 indicates that the respondents were extremely satisfied with the authenticity of information in available databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria: This study included only the top five universities of Nanjing, China, according to a Chinese university rank list and the rest of the universities in China excluded from this study. The focus was on onsite users; remote users and non-users were excluded from this study. Research limitations: The study included only five universities of Nanjing, China. Therefore, a smaller size of post-graduate students was considered and a random proportionate stratified sample technique was used to make the representative sample. Practical implications: The present study will be helpful for library professionals, subject specialists, and policy makers in designing, developing, and managing university DL resources. Originality/value: This study will present valuable suggestions and contribute to the evaluation of DL resources in academic libraries from a fresh perspective.
