Abstract:The cascaded multilevel converter is widely adopted to medium/high voltage and high power electronic applications due to the small harmonic components of the output voltage and the facilitation of modularity. In this paper, the operation principle of a T-type H-bridge topology is investigated in detail, and a carrier phase shifted pulse width modulation (CPS-PWM) based control method is proposed for this topology. Taking a virtual five-level waveform achieved by a unipolar double frequency CPS-PWM as the output object, PWM signals of the T-type H-bridge can be obtained by reverse derivation according to its switching modes. In addition, a control method for the T-type H-bridge based cascaded multilevel converter is introduced. Then a single-phase T-type H-bridge cascaded multilevel static var generator (SVG) prototype is built, and a repetitive controller based compound current control strategy is designed with the DC-link voltage balancing control scheme analyzed. Finally, simulation and experimental results validate the correctness and feasibility of the proposed modulation method and control strategy for T-type H-bridge based cascaded multilevel converters.

Abstract:Being advantageous in control of bidirectional power flow,diode-clamping multilevel converters are more and more concerned,researched and applied in medium-voltage motor driving and FACTS equipment. Substituting the neutral point with a two-level bridge-arm connected in parallel with a capacitor,a new kind of diode-clamping multilevel converter is obtained,which has fewer clamping-diodes than classic diode-clampling multilevel converter with same number of output levels. The new topology is well suited for use in situations where high quality waveforms are needed. The principle of the circuit is analyzed,and using PSIM6 the simulation of the proposed topology controlled with SHEPWM method is conducted,which proves its validity and practicability.

Abstract:Low voltage high power wind energy conversion system (WECS) requires heavy cables and large step-up grid interfacing transformers. In recent years, power and voltage rating of offshore wind turbines have already reached 10MW and 10kV respectively, and medium voltage converters have become strongly demanded. Some scholars proposed a cascaded multilevel converter based on dual active bridge (DAB) to avoid the multi-phase generator, multi-windings transformer or large bridge inductors in traditional multilevel cascaded converter, which is suitable for medium voltage applications. However, there is little research on the strategies of current control, DC-Link voltage stability control and balance control for this topology. Thus, in this paper, the current side-split control and the voltage hierarchical control is proposed for the topology applied to medium voltage WECS. The control strategy is verified by simulation.

Abstract:To acquire a multi-level converter with reduced device count applied in the three-phase mid-voltage system,two half-bridge power electronic building blocks (PEBB) are inserted into the DC side of a typical three-phase H-bridge converter,a novel seven-level converter is demonstrated.By using the H-bridge as a level doubling network,the natural point voltage imbalance of the conventional natural-point clamped converter (NPC) is bypassed.Moreover,because of the symmetrical structure,a rational control scheme for the DC voltage balancing is adopted to facilitate active current superposition and switching states selection.The operation principle is analyzed in detail and the structure characteristics of the topology are deeply revealed while a two-layer compound control strategy for DC voltage balancing is designed.A novel multi-level pulse-width modulation(PWM)algorithm based on objective wave-state vector function is proposed for use in drive pulse generation in the novel topology.The MATLAB/Simulink model of 3.3 kV/5 MW grid-connected converter is built to verify the validity of the operation principle,modulation algorithm and voltage balancing control strategy.

Abstract:Use of multilevel converter has become popular in recent years. This paper will present a new topology of capacitor-clamp cascade multilevel converter that is derived from two popular topologies. The new concept of the novel capacitor-clamp cascade converter is based on the connection of multiple three-level capacitor-clamp converter modules. Nine level waveform of the proposed multilevel converter is synthesized by adding of each converter output voltage. Sub-harmonic PWM method is employed in the new topology. The proposed converter is also verified by computer simulation using MATLAB-Simulink. Simulation results are also presented in this paper

Abstract:The topologies of cells cascaded multi-level converter and work principle of carrier phase shift control are introduced simply in this paper.Three kinds of method to generate PWM control single to control H-bridge power module are proposed.Then the waveform and harmonic of output voltage under these methods are analyzed.By using MATLAB to do system simulation,we can get the changes of phase voltage,line voltage and current while the modulate rate(M) is reduced.And the changes of harmonic and total harmonic distortion(THD) are also indicated.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new kind of topology of composite cascade multilevel converter, each phase of which is composed of a main converter and an auxiliary converter connected in cascade mode. The main converter is a multilevel converter composed of devices with high blocking voltage such as GTO and operates at the fundamental frequency of output voltage, and the difference between every two adjacent level is 2E or 3E. The large voltage synthesis is contributed by the main converter. The auxiliary converter is a H-bridge composed of fast switching devices such as IGBT and modulates at a higher frequency to enhance the quality of output voltage, and the voltage of the independent DC source of the H-bridge is E. A synergistic approach which combines the fast switching ability of IGBT and large voltage blocking capability of GTO is proposed. The proposed converter is well suited for application in high voltage or ultra-high voltage situations with high performance requirements and has advantages in high quality of output waveform, high efficiency, high voltage capacity etc. Two control strategies applicable to composite cascade multilevel converter are discussed. One is triangle-carrier method and another is SHEPWM method. Simulations of triangle-carrier method at 50Hz are carried out which proves the practicability and validity of proposal topology and control strategy.

Abstract:One of an H bridge Cascaded multilevel inverters was studied and designed. In this paper, the basic topology of microcontroller based H-bridge cascade multilevel inverter and the realization principle of control system are introduced. The principle and control strategy of the inverter are studied and described. Calculated by multi-superposition method, H bridge in the power field effect of the turn-off time is supposed to achieve the sine wave output, ladder wave modulation, with the switching device work in the fundamental frequency, small loss, and high efficiency. Circuit control part of the STM32 series chip by STMicroelectronics as the master chip, the device can run normally in the two H bridge out of the cascade of the state, causing a substantial increase in the reliability of the device; In EMTP power system in the electromagnetic transient analysis and simulation software, we construct a simulation model of 12H-bridge cascade. The simulation results show that the device can operate stably in the 12H-bridge cascade state and n-1, n-2 state, which indicates the correctness and reliability of the design. In addition, the experimental device of 12H-bridge cascade multilevel inverter is designed, which realizes the design function and feasibility of this thesis.

Abstract:Cascade inverter have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their practicability. This paper will present a novel composite cascade multilevel converter that is derived from these two topologies. The proposed converter structure is the series-connection of a five level diode-clamp converter and several three level H-bridge converters with equal dc bus voltage. Accordingly, for the novel inverter a hybrid modulation method which incorporates square-wave synthesis in conjunction with unipolar triangle carried-based PWM method is employed. With the novel topology consisting of a same DC bus voltage but different structure modules, the realization of a multilevel converter using a hybrid approach that involves higher voltage devices and fast switch devices operating in synergism is possible. Analysis of output spectral and the active power flow problem is carried out. The feasibility and the advantage are validated by simulation with MATLAB and the experiment.

Meanwhile, the frequency limitation to the switching states swapping is applied with a low-pass filter to ensure the control stable. The circuit operation and converter performance are analyzed. The analysis and control scheme is verified by MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results.

Abstract:The cascaded H-bridge（CHB） multilevel converter is the most widely used topology in a medium-voltage high-power motor drive system, and the traditional level-shifting pulse width modulation（LS-PWM） and phase-shifting pulse width modulation（PS-PWM） strategies cannot strike a balance between the input and output current harmonics. In this paper,the input and output THD of the CHB multilevel converter under these two modulation strategies are compared, and the reasons for the difference between the input and output waveforms obtained using these two methods are analyzed. Then,a partly carrier PS-PWM modulation method is proposed. By combining the advantages of these two modulation methods,this method not only keeps the characteristics of module power balance and low harmonic of grid-side input current in the PS-PWM modulation, but also realizes a satisfying output power quality in the LS-PWM modulation. An experimental platform of three-phase seven-level CHB converter was built, and the proposed partly carrier PS-PWM strategy was verified.

Abstract:This work presents a new voltage balancing theory for the diode-clamped multilevel converter/inverter system. A complete analysis of the voltage balance theory based on a 5-level back-to-back converter is given. The analysis is based on fundamental frequency switching control and then extended to PWM control, which can extremely lower the harmonic components of the voltage. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of the control theory.

Abstract:When modular multilevel converter (MMC) is designed with small number of sub-modules, the AC output voltage includes great harmonic components. So it is of great significance to improve the output voltage THD by improving the modulation method. Two modulation methods to compose 2n+1 levels based on the selection mechanism of the direct modulation method and the modulation method based on the carrier phase shift in MMC system was introduced, the output characteristics of the two types of modulation method was compared and verified by experiment on a one phase prototype of 10 sub-modules prototype.

Abstract:Multilevel inverters have been paid more and more attentions because of their good characteristics with low output harmonics,high power capacity,good electromagnetic compatibility and so on.With the development of the superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES)technology,the energy storage efficiency of inductors can be greatly improved,for higher power applications,current source inverters can have particular advantages in some circumstances.Hence it is useful to explore the topology and control strategy of a multilevel current source inverter(CSI)system.A topology of three-phase 5-level CSI is presented in this paper and its operational principle is analyzed.By simplifying the multicarrier PWM technology,two triangular-carriers out of phase are used to generate 3-level signals,after being decoupled,a kind of 5-level PWM control strategy suited for this topology is obtained and is also testified by simulations.Lastly,an experimental system is built to validate the mechanism of this 5-level topology and its PWM control method.

Abstract:Voltage balance issue of dc-link capacitors is very important for applications of a cascade multilevel converter or a modular multilevel converter. In this paper, a novel diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2C) topology is proposed and a power feedback control method is developed. With the developed control strategy, the proposed diode-clamped circuit becomes a controllable closed loop which enables the capacitor voltages to be clamped by low power rating clamping diodes. The proposed topology and control strategy has quicker response and requires much fewer voltage sensors than the normally used traditional method; therefore, the system performance improvement and cost reduction are expected. Based on the proposed DCM2C, a novel N +1-level cascade multilevel topology is proposed for a cascade active power filter (CS-APF). The simulation and experimental results from the CS-APF have demonstrated and verified the effectiveness of the proposed novel topology and control method.

Abstract:A novel hybrid-clamped four-level inverter topology and its derived five-level topology are presented in this paper. The proposed topologies can improve the voltage levels, reduce the number of devices in the diode-clamped and flying capacitor multilevel converters, and avoid the series connection of switches in the five-level active-neutral-point-clamped converter. To achieve the voltage balancing of DC-link capacitors and flying capacitors, a modified PWM method is proposed. This PWM method can regulate the central DC-link capacitor and flying capacitor voltages by adjusting the duty cycles of PWM signals slightly. The upper and lower DC-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection. An experimental prototype is built up, and the experimental results verify this topology.

Abstract:The novel multilevel circuit topologies are proposed in this paper. They are called multilevel circuit topologies based on switched-capacitor and diode-clamped converters (MCT-BSD). The topology structure and the operation principle, including the working states' transitions of the diode-clamped part, the voltages balancing mechanism of the dc link capacitors, and the pulse width modulated carrier control strategy are given. The switched-capacitor circuits contribute not only to balancing the voltages of capacitors but also to boosting the output voltage with a certain input dc voltage. The validity of the MCT-BSD is verified by simulations and experiments. The results show that balancing the voltages of capacitors, boosting the output voltages, and operating under the three-phase condition are all realized effectively in the MCT-BSD. The simulations also show the generalization of the MCT-BSD for n-level topologies.

Abstract:The hybrid cascaded multilevel converter is a newly introduced voltage-source converter with dc blocking capability. It has two key parts, that is, the director switch (DS) made of insulated-gate bipolar transistors in series and the wave-shaping circuit (WSC) containing stacks of full-bridge submodules (FSMs). This paper focuses on the modulation schemes of the DSs and the WSCs. First, to reduce switching losses of the DSs, a novel asymmetrical square-wave modulation at a very low frequency is proposed, and the energy flow of the WSC under this modulation is analyzed. Second, modified phase-shifted carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PSC-PWM) is presented to determine the number of FSMs to be inserted or bypassed; and the specified FSMs to be fired are selected according to the capacitor voltage-balancing strategy. Third, the capability to limit the short-circuit current during the dc fault is investigated, and fast ac overcurrent protection is designed. The effectiveness of the modulation and control strategies is verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulations.
A Novel Voltage Self-balance Diode-clamped Cascaded Multilevel Active Power Filter

Abstract:A novel diode-clamped cascaded multilevel converter topology is proposed. The half bridge cascade cell is added a clamping diode to the DC-link capacitor, and it may provide an energy channel clamping in single direction for capacitor voltage. Via the clamping diodes, only the top and bottom cells of a phase arm need to be controlled to realize each cell＇ s capacitors voltage balance. Therefore, the DC-link voltage sensors of a phase arm are reduced to two, much less than that of traditional cascaded converter. A three-phase multilevel active power filter （APF） topology based on the proposed diode clamped cascaded multilevel converter topology is provided, and its control strategy is presented as well. A simulation model and an experiment prototype of seven-level diode-clamped cascaded multilevel APF are built. The simulation and experiment results show that the novel cascaded multilevel converter topology has good performance in voltage selbbalance control and harmonics compensation, and the control algorithm is easy and feasible.

Abstract:Cascaded H-bridge multilevel matrix converter has the advantages of a wide controllable area of input output voltage, multilevel operation and modular structure. The converter is suitable for great power application, especially for the high voltage motor drive application. This paper proposed a control strategy of the single H-bridge Multilevel Matrix Converter, with a new single-capacitor PWM generation which can reduce the switching frequency. This paper also analyzed the control area of the topology. Performance of the Multilevel Matrix Converter, based on the proposed strategy, is evaluated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
