Abstract:Feasible sets play an important role in model predictive control (MPC) optimal control problems (OCPs). This paper proposes a multi-parametric programming-based algorithm to compute the feasible set for OCP derived from MPC-based algorithms involving both spectrahedron (represented by linear matrix inequalities) and polyhedral (represented by a set of inequalities) constraints. According to the geometrical meaning of the inner product of vectors, the maximum length of the projection vector from the feasible set to a unit spherical coordinates vector is computed and the optimal solution has been proved to be one of the vertices of the feasible set. After computing the vertices, the convex hull of these vertices is determined which equals the feasible set. The simulation results show that the proposed method is especially efficient for low dimensional feasible set computation and avoids the non-unicity problem of optimizers as well as the memory consumption problem that encountered by projection algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an exact method for the 0-1 polynomial knapsack problem. The algorithm seeks the exact optimal solution of the problem by a back-tracking branch-and-bound procedure. The upper bounds are computed by a Lagrangian dual search where the Lagrangian relaxations are solved by the maximum-flow method. Heuristic procedures are derived to search for feasible solutions and thus to improve the performance of the algorithm. Promising computational results are reported for test problems with both single constraint and multiple constraints.

Abstract:In this paper, we study how to find all real solutions of polynomial equations, if there are finitely many ones. We propose a semidefinite relaxation algorithm for computing them sequentially. Each solution can be obtained by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations. Convergence properties of the algorithm are also discussed.

Abstract:It is well known that general 0–1 programming problems are NP-Complete and their optimal solutions cannot be found with polynomial-time algorithms unless P=NP. In this paper, we identify a specific class of 0–1 programming problems that is polynomially solvable, and propose two polynomial-time algorithms to find its optimal solutions. This class of 0–1 programming problems commits to a wide range of real-world industrial applications. We provide an instance of representative in the field of supply chain management.

Abstract:We present a complete and practical algorithm which can determine the number of distinct real solutions of a given polynomial system of equations and inequalities with integer coefficients mechanically. Based on this algorithm, a program called nearsolve has been implemented in Maple. The algorithm and program have been successfully applied to many problems with various backgrounds and to automated discovering and proving for inequality-type theorems.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss the numerical solution of Boolean polynomial programs by algorithms borrowing from numerical methods for differential equations, namely the Houbolt scheme, the Lie scheme, and a Runge-Kutta scheme. We first introduce a quartic penalty functional (of Ginzburg-Landau type) to approximate the Boolean program by a continuous one and prove some convergence results as the penalty parameter converges to 0. We prove also that, under reasonable assumptions, the distance between local minimizers of the penalized problem and the set is of order . Next, we introduce algorithms for the numerical solution of the penalized problem, these algorithms relying on the Houbolt, Lie and Runge-Kutta schemes, classical methods for the numerical solution of ordinary or partial differential equations. We performed numerical experiments to investigate the impact of various parameters on the convergence of the algorithms. We have tested our ODE approaches and compared with the classical nonlinear optimization solver IPOPT and a quadratic binary formulation approach (QB-G) as well as an exhaustive method using parallel computing techniques. The numerical results on various datasets (including small and large-scale randomly generated synthetic datasets of general Boolean polynomial optimization problems, and a large-scale heterogeneous MQLib benchmark dataset of Max-Cut and Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems) show good performances for our ODE approaches. As a result, our ODE algorithms often converge faster than the other compared methods to better integer solutions of the Boolean program.

Abstract:Let A(n) be a $k\times s$ matrix and $m(n)$ be a $k$ dimensional vector, where all entries of A(n) and $m(n)$ are integer-valued polynomials in $n$. Suppose that $$t(m(n)|A(n))=#\{x\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{s}\mid A(n)x=m(n)\}$$ is finite for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $Z_+$ is the set of nonnegative integers. This paper conjectures that $t(m(n)|A(n))$ is an integer-valued quasi-polynomial in $n$ for $n$ sufficiently large and verifies the conjecture in several cases.

Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm to solve nonlinear integer programming problems.After finding out a discrete local minimal solution by using a genetic algorithm as a initial point,the algorithm tries to improve a discrete local minimal solution by minimizing a filled function.Finally,a global solution will be found after finite iterations.Numerical experiments show that this algorithm is efficient.
An ODE approach to multiple choice polynomial programming

Abstract:We propose an ODE approach to solving multiple choice polynomial programming (MCPP) after assuming that the optimum point can be approximated by the expected value of so-called thermal equilibrium as usually did in simulated annealing. The explicit form of the feasible region and the affine property of the objective function are both fully exploited in transforming the MCPP problem into the ODE system. We also show theoretically that a local optimum of the former can be obtained from an equilibrium point of the latter. Numerical experiments on two typical combinatorial problems, MAX-$k$-CUT and the calculation of star discrepancy, demonstrate the validity of our ODE approach, and the resulting approximate solutions are of comparable quality to those obtained by the state-of-the-art heuristic algorithms but with much less cost. This paper also serves as the first attempt to use a continuous algorithm for approximating the star discrepancy.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

Abstract:This paper studies Nash equilibrium problems that are given by polynomial functions. We formulate efficient polynomial optimization problems for computing Nash equilibria. The Lasserre type Moment-SOS relaxations are used to solve them. Under generic assumptions, the method can find a Nash equilibrium if there is one. Moreover, it can find all Nash equilibria if there are finitely many ones of them. The method can also detect nonexistence if there is no Nash equilibrium.

Abstract:The work in this paper is to initiate a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials. The central question is to ask whether a polynomial represented by certain economically compact structure has a multilinear monomial in its sum-product expansion. The complexity aspects of this problem and its variants are investigated with two objectives. One is to understand how this problem relates to critical problems in complexity, and if so to what extent. The other is to exploit possibilities of applying algebraic properties of polynomials to the study of those problems. A series of results about ΠΣΠ and ΠΣ polynomials are obtained in this paper, laying a basis for further study along this line.

Termination Analysis of Polynomial Programs with Equality Conditions

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the termination problem of a family of polynomial programs, in which all assignments to program variables are polynomials, and test conditions of loops and conditional statements are polynomial equations. Our main result is that the non-terminating inputs of such a polynomial program is algorithmically computable according to a strictly descending chain of algebraic sets, which implies that the termination problem of these programs is decidable. The complexity of the algorithm follows immediately from the length of the chain, which can be computed by Hilbert's function and Macaulay's theorem. To the best of our knowledge, the considered family of polynomial programs should be the largest one with a decidable termination problem so far. The experimental results indicate the efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:This paper deals with a functional equation and inequality arising in dynamic programming of multistage decision processes. Using several fixed-point theorems due to Krasnoselskii, Boyd–Wong and Liu, we prove the existence and/or uniqueness and iterative approximations of solutions, bounded solutions and bounded continuous solutions for the functional equation in two Banach spaces and a complete metric space, respectively. Utilizing the monotone iterative method, we establish the existence and iterative approximations of solutions and nonpositive solutions for the functional inequality in a complete metric space. Six examples which dwell upon the importance of our results are also included.

Abstract:The satisfiability of a class of random Boolean equations named massive algebraic system septated to linear and nonlinear subproblems is studied in this paper. On one hand, the correlation between the magnetization of generators and the clustering of solutions of the linear subproblem is investigated by analyzing the Gaussian elimination process. On the other hand, the characteristics of maximal elements of solutions of the nonlinear subproblem are studied by introducing the partial order among solutions. Based on the algebraic characteristics of these two subproblems, the upper and lower bounds of satisfiability threshold of massive algebraic system are obtained by unit-clause propagation and leaf-removal process, and coincide as the ratio of nonlinear equations q>0.739 in which analytical values of the satisfiability threshold can be derived. Furthermore, a complete algorithm with heuristic decimation is proposed to observe the approximation of the satisfiability threshold, which performs more efficiently than the classical ones.

Abstract:The following article presents and corroborates an outcome space branch-and-bound algorithm for solving the general linear multiplicative programming problem (GLMPP). In this new algorithm, GLMPP is transformed into its equivalent problem by introducing auxiliary variables. To compute the tight upper bound for the optimal value of GLMPP, the linear relaxation programming problem is assembled by using bound and hull linear approximations. Furthermore, the global convergence and computational complexity of the algorithm are demonstrated. Finally, the soundness and advantage of the proposed algorithm are validated by solving a demonstrative linear multiplicative problem.

Sparse Polynomial Matrix Optimization

Abstract:A polynomial matrix inequality is a statement that a symmetric polynomial matrix is positive semidefinite over a given constraint set. Polynomial matrix optimization concerns minimizing the smallest eigenvalue of a symmetric polynomial matrix subject to a tuple of polynomial matrix inequalities. This work explores the use of sparsity methods in reducing the complexity of sum-of-squares based methods in verifying polynomial matrix inequalities or solving polynomial matrix optimization. In the unconstrained setting, Newton polytopes can be employed to sparsify the monomial basis, resulting in smaller semidefinite programs. In the general setting, we show how to exploit different types of sparsity (term sparsity, correlative sparsity, matrix sparsity) encoded in polynomial matrices to derive sparse semidefinite programming relaxations for polynomial matrix optimization. For term sparsity, one intriguing phenomenon is that the related block structures do not necessarily converge to the one determined by sign symmetries, which is significantly distinguished from the scalar case. For correlative sparsity, unlike the scalar case, we provide a counterexample showing that asymptotic convergence does not hold under the Archimedean condition and the running intersection property. By employing the theory of matrix-valued measures, we establish several results on detecting global optimality and retrieving optimal solutions under correlative sparsity. The effectiveness of sparsity methods on reducing computational complexity is demonstrated on various examples of polynomial matrix optimization.

Fine-Grained Equivalence for Problems Related to Integer Linear Programming

Abstract:Integer Linear Programming with $n$ binary variables and $m$ many $0/1$-constraints can be solved in time $2^{\tilde O(m^2)} \text{poly}(n)$ and it is open whether the dependence on $m$ is optimal. Several seemingly unrelated problems, which include variants of Closest String, Discrepancy Minimization, Set Cover, and Set Packing, can be modelled as Integer Linear Programming with $0/1$ constraints to obtain algorithms with the same running time for a natural parameter $m$ in each of the problems. Our main result establishes through fine-grained reductions that these problems are equivalent, meaning that a $2^{O(m^{2-\varepsilon})} \text{poly}(n)$ algorithm with $\varepsilon > 0$ for one of them implies such an algorithm for all of them. In the setting above, one can alternatively obtain an $n^{O(m)}$ time algorithm for Integer Linear Programming using a straightforward dynamic programming approach, which can be more efficient if $n$ is relatively small (e.g., subexponential in $m$). We show that this can be improved to ${n'}^{O(m)} + O(nm)$, where $n'$ is the number of distinct (i.e., non-symmetric) variables. This dominates both of the aforementioned running times.
