Frontiers of Chemical Engineering in China

Abstract:The process of p-xylene liquid phase oxidation to produce purified terephthalic acid (PTA) involves a series of liquid phase radical reactions, chemical absorption, reactive crystallization, and evaporation. A commercial PTA production flow sheet includes a number of unit operations, which construct a complex process system. In this paper, a review of research and development (R&D) works on PTA process carried out in Zhejiang University during recent years is introduced. The works cover the oxidation and crystallization kinetics, gas-liquid mass transfer and evaporation, reactor modeling, database development, novel reactor design, process modeling, simulation, and optimization. The author emphasizes the viewpoint through this case study that chemical reaction engineering should be developed to process system engineering to extend its scope, and particular attention should be paid on reactor and process modeling.

Abstract:Three different processes, i.e. the gas phase process, liquid phase process and process of gas-liquid mixed phase, for producing isopropanol used in industry and its advantages and disadvantages are introduced. Recent advances in using solid acid catalyst in direct hydration of propylene for isopropanol production and current situation of research work and production of isopropanol are also introduced. Finally, development of producing isopropanol by direct hydration of propylene in China is forecasted based on the production and technique researches at home.

Abstract:Most phosphorus ores are in medium and low grades in China.In order to meet the requirement of sustainable development,it is necessary to not only produce phosphoric acid by using these phosphorus ores,but also create a good economic benefit.The production processes,including wet-process phosphoric acid,thermal process phosphoric acid and kiln-method phosphoric acid technologies were described.The fundamental principles,major equipment,technological process of each process were overviewed.The thermal phosphoric acid and kiln-method phosphoric acid technologies whose processes are strict were emphasized,and some new progress of the kiln-phosphoric acid process were expounded.Focusing on these processes helps to comparatively analyze the aforesaid industrial phosphoric acid production processes,thus the best craft can be selected depending on the actual situation.

Abstract:Isophthalic acid (IPA) is commercially produced from m-xylene oxidation with the catalysis of the homogeneous Co–Mn–Br catalyst system. In this study, a catalytic system consisting of HPW/C and Co(II) has been put forward to oxidize m-xylene (MX) to IPA. The experimental results prove that the HPW/C and Co catalytic system is capable of catalyzing the oxidation of MX to IPA, which can obtain a higher MX conversion and IPA concentration than the homogeneous H3PW12O40/Co(OAc)2/Mn(OAc)2 catalytic system. The heterogeneous catalytic system is also advantageous over the homogeneous catalytic system in the inhibition of the oxidation of acetic acid and IPA. The optimal amount of phosphotungstic acid supported on carbon is 7.5% (wt). The best dosage of HPW/C is 15gl−1. The optimum Co(II) concentration in the catalytic system for IPA production is 0.064% (wt). The best HPW/C activation temperature is 220°C.

Abstract:Isophthalic acid (IPA) is usually produced by the Co–Mn–Br catalyst system. In this study, a bromine-free catalyst system consisting of H3PW12O40/Co(OAc)2/Mn(OAc)2 has been put forward to oxidizing m-xylene (MX) to IPA. The experimental results proves that the homogeneous H3PW12O40/Co(OAc)2/Mn(OAc)2 catalytic system is able to catalyze the oxidation of MX to IPA. The optimal phosphotungstic acid concentration is 0.52wt%. The optimum Co(II) concentration for IPA production is between 0.044% and 0.088wt%. The best Mn/Co ratio is found to be 2.46. Temperature has a strong effect on the reaction rates. Oxygen partial pressure influences on the IPA yield greatly. The kinetic parameters such as activation energies, reaction orders have been estimated.

Abstract:Myo-inositol and its derivatives have been extensively used in the pharmaceutics, cosmetics, and food and feed industries. In recent years, compared with traditional chemical acid hydrolysis, biological methods have been taken as viable and cost-effective ways to myo-inositol production from cheap raw materials. In this review, we provide a thorough overview of the development, progress, current status, and future direction of myo-inositol production (e.g., chemical acid hydrolysis, microbial fermentation, and in vitro enzymatic biocatalysis). The chemical acid hydrolysis of phytate suffers from serious phosphorous pollution and intricate product separation, resulting in myo-inositol production at a high cost. For microbial fermentation, creative strategies have been provided for the efficient myo-inositol biosynthesis by synergetic utilization of glucose and glycerol in Escherichia coli. in vitro cascade enzymatic biocatalysis is a multienzymatic transformation of various substrates to myo-inositol. Here, the different in vitro pathways design, the source of selected enzymes, and the catalytic condition optimization have been summarized and analyzed. Also, we discuss some important existing challenges and suggest several viewpoints. The development of in vitro enzymatic biosystems featuring low cost, high volumetric productivity, flexible compatibility, and great robustness could be one of the promising strategies for future myo-inositol industrial biomanufacturing.

Abstract:Global competition and storage for indium resources are increasing. This paper uses substance flow analysis to quantify the flow of indium in China from 2000 to 2019 and discusses the problems facing China’s indium industry chain. Over the past 20 years, China has mined more than 21,000 tons of indium from the lithosphere, and the accumulated indium content in imported ore is about 3600 tons. In the upper reaches of the industrial chain, the loss of indium exceeded 19,000 tons; in the middle reaches, due to technical barriers, China exported a large amount of indium at low prices and imported a large amount of ITO targets at high prices. The amount of indium in the imported targets exceeded 2100 tons; in the downstream, approximately 60% of the final products were exported abroad. China’s cumulative output of recycled indium was about 630 tons, primary indium output was 5912 tons, and the cumulative inventory of indium reached 3200 tons. Therefore, increasing the recovery rate in the primary production stage, overcoming the technical barriers in the middle of the industry chain, and establishing an efficient recovery system are necessary measures to promote the sustainable development of indium resources and its industry chain.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is a significant white inorganic pigment used in coating, plastic, rubber, ink, paper, etc. Material flow analysis of TiO2 can help to analyze the relationship among inflows, outflows and stocks throughout the whole titanium life-cycle in China. This paper divides the whole material flow of TiO2 into four stages by using MFA, including primary production, manufacturing and fabrication, use and waste management. The results indicated that China produced 2,654,700 tons of TiO2 in 2017, which about 95% of the TiO2 comes from the sulfuric acid method. 70% TiO2 is used for domestic consumption which 85% is low-end products such as coatings, plastics and paper. Because of the low recovery rate of TiO2 products and the low efficiency of the sulfuric acid process method, the waste of titanium resources is serious. The policy suggestions for improving the resource utilization efficiency of TiO2 are as follows: increasing the proportion of the sulfuric acid purification of high titanium slag, and promoting the proportion of chlorination process to produce TiO2; the government should strengthen the protective development of ilmenite resources in the "fourteenth five-year plan" of China's mining industry, and adjust China's titanium industrial structure and gradually develop into high-end fields.

Supply and demand prospect of global lithium resources and some suggestions

Abstract:With the development of emergent industries such as information technology and new energy vehicles, the importance of lithium is increasing with each passing day. Based on an analysis of the present situation of lithium resource in the world in the aspects of its distribution and its supply and demand as well as the impact of the future development of lithium ion batteries on the demand of lithium resource, the authors hold that the present relaxed global lithium market will become tightening in the mid-short term; nevertheless, in the long run, there will be no shortage of global lithium resources. The main challenges facing the lithium industry are that the production concentration degree is too high, domestic extraction technology of saline lake lithium should be improved, and the safety of lithium ion battery should be increased. Some suggestions have been put forward in this paper, which argue that lithium should be categorized into the new energy minerals inventory as critical mineral resources in China, that the lithium strategic reserve should be established, and that the extraction process in the saline lake with high Mg/Li ratios should be strengthened.

Development status and suggestion on China carbon fiber industry

Abstract:The production and consumption situation of carbon fiber were reviewed in China and abroad.Carbon fiber industry typically comprised large-tow carbon fiber production in America and regular-tow carbon fiber production in Japan.The consumption of carbon fiber dominantly located in North America,Europe and Asia(Japan) in the fields of aerospace,national defense,industry,sports and leisure.The slow development of China carbon fiber industry can not satisfy the growing consumption both in product varieties and quality.The development of novel carbon fiber materials was described in details in Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited,who cooperates with scientific and research insitutes and integrates the technologyical resources in industry,universities and research institutions.Some suggestion was proposed on the development of China carbon fiber industry.It was pointed out that in order to stimulate the comprehensive development of China carbon fiber industry,the whole development plan of China carbon fiber industry be drawn as soon as possible key industry bases be built,the regional cooperation superiority be developed,national or regional evaluation and certificate authorities for carbon fibers and their composite material be established.

Abstract:Based on the general framework of substance flow analysis, this paper quantifies the social economic metabolism of indium in China. The results show that in recent years, the output of indium primary products in China accounts for more than 50% of the worldwide production, but the domestic consumption is less than 20%. For the lack of key technologies for processing into indium tin oxide (ITO), more than 98% of the high quality ITO targets depend on imports. As the indium industry has been affected by policy, great changes have occurred in China's indium import/export trade, which has mainly focused on a few countries. There is a significant excess in indium primary products, which are mainly absorbed by national purchasing and the Pan Asian Nonferrous Metals Exchange. In the short-term this protects the development of China's primary indium industry, but in the long-term the development of indium still needs to rely on downstream industries. The quantitative analysis of indium flow can provide a quantitative scientific basis for adjusting the indium industrial structure, improving the indium industrial policy and realizing the sustainable development of the indium industry.

Abstract:The itaconic acid (IA) world market is expected to exceed 216 million of dollars by 2020 as a result of an increasing demand for bio-based chemicals. The potential of this organic acid produced by fermentation mainly with filamentous fungi relies on the vast industrial applications of polymers derived from it. The applications may be as a superabsorbent polymer for personal care or agriculture, unsaturated polyester resin for the transportation industry, poly(methyl methacrylate) for electronic devices, among many others. However, the existence of other substitutes and the high production cost limit the current IA market. IA manufacturing is done mainly in China and other Asia-Pacific countries. Higher economic feasibility and production worldwide may be achieved with the use of low-cost feedstock of local origin and with the development of applications targeted to specific local markets. Moreover, research on the biological pathway for IA synthesis and the effect of medium composition are important for amplifying the knowledge about the production of that biochemical with great market potential.

Abstract:In the production of titanium dioxide by sulfuric acid process,the production of 1t titanium dioxide will generate 8~10 t waste sulfuric acid with mass fraction of about 20%.Treatment and comprehensive utilization of waste acid is a very important work for solving environment pollution of titanium dioxide production.Some methods for the treatment and comprehensive utilization of titanium dioxide waste acid at home and abroad in recent years were summarized.Methods of concentration,diffusion dialysis,and extraction etc.commonly used in recovery of sulfuric acid were introduced.Various technologies of producing ferrous ammonium sulfate,gypsum,synthetic rutile,calcium superphosphate,polyferric sulfate,and iron-based painted with titanium dioxide waste acid as raw material were sumed up.Methods of separating and extracting scandium,titanium,vanadium,iron,and other valuable metals from waste acid were emphasized.Lastly,development direction of comprehensive utilization of titanium dioxide waste acid utilizing various resources in waste acid simultaneously while treating and controlling it to change waste into valuable was pointed out.

Abstract:l-Lactide is an intermediate for the industrial production of polylactic acid (PLA). The chemical and optical purities of lactide determine the quality of the prepared PLA. It is of great challenge to synthesize l-lactide efficiently with high chemical and optical purities under the conditions applicable for industrial production. With the national plastic reduction order issued, developing biodegradable materials such as PLA has gradually become a hot topic, and the production of upstream lactide is the key technique for the whole industrial chain. This mini-review aims to summarize typical works on the related synthetic technology development in recent years.
