Abstract:The Study on influential factors of tourism is the fundamental work of defining the tourism industry. The complexity of the factors and the blur of the definition find it hard to set foot of the researches in the academic field. Therefore, studies on the domino effect phenomena in tourism and explorations of the influential factors of tourists' demands are becoming the focus of the relative researches. Adopting the Multivariate Time Series Variance Component Model (MTV) which is effective in such research due to the diversity and complexity of the influential factors in tourism demand, this paper concentrates on the influential factors of China's domestic tourism demand, and analyzes the correlative data from 1984 to 2005. the paper holds that the fluctuation of the domestic tourism demand is mainly affected by the increasing speed of economy; the further studies on the development of hospitality and retailing also reflect that the secondary industry pull the domestic tourism demand more effectively than the tertiary industry, while the transport industry doesn't impact too much. The prosperous future of the secondary and tertiary industry in China will surely offer a long-term dynamics for the increase of the tourism demand. Also, the paper points out the roles of investments and the imports and exports, which are the impetus of the economy increase. Then, the paper argues that the higher the living standard is, the more tourists demand, and these demands actually increase with the different degrees and speeds. Finally, this paper puts forward that the increasing speed of the domestic tourism demand is still below the speed of living standard improvement. Thus, the rapid tourism consumption increasing period has not come yet.

Abstract:This study explores the current status of research on inbound tourism to China, which ranks third globally among tourist receiving countries. The importance of inbound tourism as an indicator of national tourism competitiveness and the current slow growth of inbound tourism in China make this review timely. A bibliometric approach is used. Articles published with CSSCI (Chinese Social Science Indexed) journals and international studies published in English-language journals were identified. Analysis of over 700 domestic articles about inbound tourism indicates that the studies concentrate on macro issues, in particular the spatial and temporal distribution of the inbound tourists and their economic impacts. Few studies on Chinese inbound tourism have been published in English language journals. The most popular theme is tourists’ behaviors. A comparison between publications in two languages is made and implications are offered in the context of the Chinese government’s policies on inbound tourism and the current status of research.

Abstract:With increases in disposable income in China as well as the traditional focus on family life, family tourism is one of the fastest growing segments in contemporary Chinese tourism. This study presents a systematic review of 66 research articles from Chinese academic journals published between 1995 and 2015. The general trend, themes and methods are analyzed. Listening to children's voices, paying attention to diverse family types, the influence of social media on family travel, collaboration among researchers with different backgrounds, and thinking through the role of Chinese culture are posited as topics requiring increased attention to enhance future family tourism research in China.
Positive Psychology and Its Applications in Tourism Studies

Abstract:Positive psychology is an area of study that seeks to highlight the role of positive emotions, character strengths and positive institutions serving human happiness and well-being. There has been a rapid rise in the prominence of this area of psychology since the year 2000. Due to its consistency with the social economic concerns of the contemporary era, as well its accordance with ordinary people' s pursuit of happiness, positive psychology has been increasingly adopted by a range of disciplines. Its application in tourism, however, has been very slow. It was first introduced to tourism studies by Dr. Philip Pearce, a tourism psychologist based in Australia, in 2007. This article initially addressed the core ideas about positive psychology. Its background, its differences from the traditional clinical psychology, and its distinctive ways of doing research were reviewed. More importantly, the three core research areas, positive emotion, positive personality, and positive institutions were addressed in detail. The relationships among these three elements were also presented. In addition, positive interventions, which help to achieve the three afore-mentioned outcomes were considered. The highlight of this overview lies in the introduction of earlier positive psychology studies to tourism. The work of Pearce and his colleagues', especially Sebastian Filep, has been thoroughly reviewed and acknowledged. Their work, together with others, fully supports a consistency between the goals of tourism and the aims of positive psychology. For example, tourist behaviour as a case study, the benefits of travelling for individuals can fit in all the elements proposed by Martin Seligman's (2011) PERMA model (e.g. pleasure, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievement). The existing literature which underpins positive psychology and its adoption in tourism is helpful in enriching our understanding. Research in this area, however, can be more insightful and useful if we take the Chinese context into consideration. A critical issue is to incorporate the Chinese cultural issues, especially the influential Confucianism, the Buddhism, as well as the modern communist cultures. These cultural contexts offer insights in exploring the distinctive characters of both Chinese tourist behaviour and the tourism community development. Considering the broader cultural issues and the research in and about China tourism, we proposed three areas for further research. Firstly, there is a paucity of positive psychology studies in tourism community research. As far as China is concerned, where many provinces and regions are using tourism as a tool to enhance local livelihoods, studies about how tourism can improve tourism community's well-being are both timely and important. Secondly, the thinking in positive psychologies can also be applied to the extraordinarily growing Chinese tourist market and consumer studies. Examples include what issues will influence Chinese tourists' positive on-site emotional experiences, and what are the learning outcomes of travelling, especially those for non-traditional travel (e. g. independent overseas travel, gap year, couch surfing, and self-drive tourism). The last but not the least point is concerned with the well-being of China's aging population and its increasing mobility. The kinds of tourism styles and benefits for this group in China may be very different from snowbirds and grey nomads in the western world. Research about how travel and serious leisure contribute to tourism communities and their own well-being is of particular help to both the policy makers and tourism industry in China.

Abstract:This paper provides a thorough examination of the Mainland Chinese demand for outbound travel. It analyses the impacts of the Mainland Chinese outbound tourism market according to factors such as policy, economy and socio-political issues. The origins, destination perceptions and organization of Mainland Chinese outbound tourists are also explained, together with the negative impacts of tourism on Mainland Chinese travellers, travel agencies, national image and economic loss. Finally, the marketing policies for Mainland Chinese outbound tourism in travel agencies, government tourism offices and destinations are examined. Abstract:China’s domestic tourism has developed quickly in the past 20 years. This article briefly reviews the scale of expansion in domestic tourism in China and summarizes three important factors contributing to that great change. In search of development trends, the article examines the main products of domestic tourism and government policy changes that influence tourism development. The conclusion is that China’s domestic tourism has shifted to the 3H (high input, high risk and high output) pattern. Besides intermediate‐long‐haul sightseeing and business tourism, domestic tourists frequently take medium‐short‐distance sightseeing trips and short‐distance weekend vacations, which forms ReBAM (Recreational belt around metropolis), a new tourist spatial pattern.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to focus on the reforms in the public-holiday-policy system and their influence on the domestic tourism in China. The major reforms in the Chinese holiday system in the last 20 years and the overall changes in the demand for domestic tourism are analyzed in this paper to provide a better understanding of China's holiday-system reform for policy makers in the future.Design/methodology/approach - This paper summarizes the development and reform of the holiday system in China. Policy review and domestic tourism statistics were applied to study the intrinsic relationship between the holiday system and the domestic tourism. The statistics of domestic tourism are cited, including the growth rates of both urban and rural tourists, the domestic tourism expenditure per capita, etc. Finally, this research explains the trends of these rates in a comprehensive background.Findings - The increasing length of holidays positively affects the domestic tourism demand by increasing the leisure time. Yet, the holiday-tourism activities lead to a series of problems, such as a huge pressure on transportation, overloaded tourist attractions, and threats to safety precautions. Paid leave, price leverage, and more reasonable tourist-attraction arrangements will be effective in easing China's holiday rush.Originality/value - Through studying the intrinsic relationship between the holiday system and the domestic tourism, this paper points out the problems of excessive concentration of domestic tourism demand in a particular time, caused by the holiday system. Solutions and suggestions are provided on the basis of the analysis.

Abstract:Given the prospects for the development of the Chinese tourism market, we consider it appropriate to thoroughly study the impact of Chinese conditions on the global tourism industry and China's international tourism positioning. Literary analysis of Chinese tourism research has shown a growing interest in this issue since the 2010s. Most scholars, tourism practitioners, government officials and professionals in tourism agencies agree that the Chinese tourism market has mega potential and high development dynamics. However, while scientific reviews of the past decade have focused exclusively on researching the travel geography of Chinese travelers and the dynamics of Chinese outbound tourism, modern work provides a deep understanding of Chinese tourists' behavior and experiences and highlights negative aspects of Chinese mass tourism. In this article, the author specifies China's place in the global tourism market, using quantitative data and tourism indices. In particular, after ranking the world countries on key quantitative indicators of the level of development of the tourism industry (number of tourists, number of international tourist arrivals, number of revenues from tourism), China's strong position was revealed (3rd, 4th and 11th respectively).Graphs of changes in the number of international tourist arrivals and cash inflows from tourism showed a positive trend. In particular, in 2019 a record was reached among the number of tourists and the number of tourist arrivals in China for the entire research period. At the same time, it should be noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has not bypassed China's tourism sector and in 2020 the number of international tourist arrivals decreased fivefold (this is the lowest figure for the country in the history of collecting international tourism statistics, since 1995). revenues from international tourists reached 14.2 billion dollars. (less than ever in the last 20 years). The prospects of the Chinese market and optimistic dynamics of its development were evidenced by the highest rating indices in the field of tourism and travel − Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (2019) and Travel & Tourism Development Index (2021), where China ranked 13th and 12th respectively. Thus, quantitative indicators and integrated indices have confirmed China's important position in the tourism market and allow us to predict their stable strengthening and China's short-term world leadership in the tourism sector.

Abstract:This study integrates natural and cultural environmental factors within a unified framework, exploring their specific effects on tourism demand in China. To more effectively account for spatial dependence and variable heterogeneity in tourism demand, we utilize the spatial Durbin model in analyzing provincial-level data spanning from 2007 to 2019. Research findings reveal: (1) Both domestic and inbound tourism display significant spatial association. (2) Natural and cultural factors exhibit spatial spillover effects on domestic tourism demand, exemplified by sulfur dioxide generation and intangible cultural heritage quantity. (3) The impact factors or mechanisms of natural and cultural environment on domestic and inbound tourism share some similarities, but differences still exist. For instance, intangible cultural heritage prosperity stimulates regional domestic tourism but only affects local inbound tourism. This study, using China as a case, offers a practical approach and theoretical perspective for probing into the emergent growth poles in tourism demand.

Does it Matter? Examining the Impact of China’s Vacation Policies on Domestic Tourism Demand

Abstract:With the domestic tourism market enjoying rapid expansion in the past decade, a number of significant changes in public policy have affected the institutionalization of public holidays and paid vacations in China. This article examines the impact of public policy in shaping domestic tourism development in China and estimates domestic tourism demand by applying a dynamic model using panel data. Three alternative models are applied to a panel data set made up of the ratio of domestic tourist departures in each of the 29 Chinese originating cities between 2001 and 2010. The empirical results exhibit the significant value of the lagged dependent variable on consumer decision and reveal the causal link between domestic tourism demand and consumer, trip-related and policy attributes. The findings clearly indicate that (a) China’s domestic tourism market is maturing, (b) the vacation policy changes adopted in 2007 have had a significant effect in changing domestic tourism demand, and (c) domestic tourism demand has been substituted by an ever-increasing outbound tourism market. Implications are discussed for policy making and destination management.

Abstract:Background Travel for health reasons is booming around the world and in China. As a huge source and destination of health tourism, little is understood about the volume, characteristics, motivations, and preferences of health travelers in China. This study provides details of China’s health tourism reality and consumer demand of Chinese residents who did or will travel for health. Methods We established a questionnaire through literature analysis and a focus group, then collected 695 responses based on an online random sampling design. Finally, 629 questionnaires (effective recovery rate was 90%) were analyzed with statistical description, binary logistic regression, and word frequency analysis to draw the reality of health tourism, explore the influential factors, and sort out suggestions. Results In this study, 387 respondents knew of health tourism (61.53%), 446 reported interest (70.9%), and 234 had traveled for health reasons before (37.2%), with 329 occurring within China (91.4%). The top three reasons for health tourism were decompression and relaxation (116, 20%), physical examination (82, 14.1%), and health care (73, 12.6%). High costs (372, 16.3%), little disposable time (309, 13.5%), and lack of reliable professional institutions (289, 12.6%) were the main potential barriers for consumers. Professional level and quality of the institution, personal privacy, and service personnel’s attitude were the most important concerns for consumers when arranging health travel. Marital status (OR = 0.209, 95% CI = 0.085–0.514, P = 0.001) and attitude to health tourism (OR = 2.259, 95%CI = 1.553–3.287, P < 0.001) were factors for consumers’ willingness to perform health tourism. “Propaganda” was proposed most frequently by participants, followed by “service” and “price”. Conclusion The popularity of health tourists is low although there is a huge market in China. There are also differences between willingness of previous and prospective customers with varying socio-demographic characteristics in this investigation. Overall, more diverse propaganda measures should be taken, and government policies or legal documents ought to keep pace with it. Health tourism products’ promotion, as well as supporting measures and brand, need to be emphasized.

Abstract:Abstract Modeling and forecasting tourism demand across destinations has become a priority in tourism research. Most tourism demand studies rely on annual statistics with small sample sizes and lack research on spatial heterogeneity and drivers of tourism demand. This study proposes a new framework for measuring inter-provincial tourism demand's spatiotemporal distribution using search engine indices based on a geographic perspective. A combination of spatial autocorrelation and Geodetector is utilized to recognize the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of tourism demand in 2011 and 2018 in 31 provinces of mainland China and detect its driving mechanisms. The results reveal that the spatial distribution of tourism demand manifests a vital stratification phenomenon with significant spatial aggregation in the southwest and northeast of China. Traffic conditions, social-economic development level, and physical conditions compose a constant and robust interaction network, which dominates the spatial distribution of tourism demand in different development stages through different interactions.

An International Comparative Study on Development Level of China's Outbound Tourism

Abstract:Outbound tourist market is the fastest growing market among the three tourist markets in China.Hence a correct understanding of the level and phases of its development can serve as the basis of both theoretical researches and policy practices.Based on data of 44 main tourist countries and regions from 1980 to 2004,the authors applied cross-section and panel data research methods to study their outbound tourist markets.It is found that a country's outbound tourist rate appears to increase with it's growing per capita GDP and GNP,and an explosive growth is expected when per capita GNP reaches about 16000 USD;however there exists a big-country effect demonstrated by negative correlation between the population of a country and its outbound tourist rate.The results also show that remarkable impact of economical growth speed will only be clearly felt when the economy grows to a particular level.

Abstract:Abstract Tourism is a way of recreation, which involves a person’s travel to another city, country, and even to another continent. Travel is different, and any connoisseur can choose a vacation to their liking: active, educational, wellness, religious, beach, or rural. Tourism helps people escape from everyday problems, learn something new, and get an unforgettable aesthetic satisfaction. Also, such a vacation helps not only to learn the cultures of other countries and peoples but also contributes to the personal development of any traveller. In general, it allows people to combine relaxation with learning new things. However, different tourists have different preferences, so their motivation to visit specific cities, countries, or regions are also different. This study aims to provide tourists in China with an up to date and specific typology based on centricity and experience. Besides, the motive behind the work presented in this paper is to identify the different types of tourists in China, analyse their preferences, and as a result, create their holistic profile. Several studies from China already have information on the factors that influence this typology. In general, they include characteristics of travel (for example, on-site activities, prior knowledge) and some sociodemographic characteristics. This study shows that, in practice, there are small differences in preferences between local day trippers and those travelling for several days from remote regions of China.

Abstract:Based on a large number of domestic literature reviews with related research abroad, academic standards and issues awareness have been intensified in domestic tourism geography, disciplinary consciousness and innovation enhancement. Hence, some valuable achievements have been made in the areas of tourism resources, tourism regional system, the spatial structure of tourism, tourism flow, ecotourism, tourism industry, tourism planning and tourism impacts, which strengthened the traditional advantages of research, expanded new areas of research and made research trends diverse. Research trends of China’s tourism geography are prospected: 1) Catering to national strategic needs, persisting problem-oriented, strengthening the metatheoretical research, and building Chinese “localization” of theory of tourism geography and method system. 2) Introducing and assimilating foreign theories and research methods, while focusing on explaining new tourism phenomena and problems in the domestic socio-economic background. 3) Concerning about the new regional spatial processes of demographic process, social process, and spatial process in new tourism trend. 4) Exploring interactive process and mechanism of man-land relationship and new models to develop territorial space under the tourism impacts. 5) Exploring important research issues of tourism geography in global, national, regional and local scales, from the point of view of spatial differentiation, scale transformation, interaction of man and nature, creating tourism geography interpretation system based on “process-structure-mechanism” of China. 6) Building theoretical system actively, while strengthening application-oriented research, and focusing on tourism poverty alleviation, tourism and heritage protection, national parks’ construction and other hot issues. Faced with econometrics research boom, we should return to rational thinking, using big data scientifically, while paying attention to the important role of qualitative evaluation in future research.

Abstract:In the recent decade, with the increasing affluence of Chinese economy, domestic tourism have entered into an accelerated development stage and the demands in lodging market kept rising. China’s domestic tourism had a continuous increase of around 10% each year. In 2012, with an immense increase in domestic demand, the total number of domestic tourists is estimated to 3.13 billion persontimes (Table 1), the country has already formed the largest domestic tourist market in the world. The newly emerging economy hotels which offer clean and comfortable guest rooms at relatively low price are undergoing dramatic developments and has expanded rapidly since 2003 (Table 2).
