Effect of Periodontal Initial Therapy on the Serum C-reactive Protein Level

Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of periodontal therapy on the serum level of CRP in the moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis patients,the chronic periodontitis patients with CHD,and chronic periodontitis patients with CHD risk factors. Methods From 2007.7 to 2008.7,thirty-five patients with moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis were enrolled in the present study,who were treated in the Oral Department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital. Periodontal initial therapy,consisting of oral hygiene instruction,supragingival scaling,subgingival scaling and root planing,was performed on all patients.Periodontal parameters were recorded before and 3 months after completion of treatment. Blood samples were taken at baseline and 3 months after treatment. Serum hs-CRP concentration was determined by immunorturbidimetric test. Results At three months after periodontal therapy,plaque and bleeding scores decreased,probing depths reduced,and attachment level gained in all three groups(P 0.05) . The risk classes of CRP were lowered at 3 months after periodontal initial therapy. Conclusion This study indicates that periodontal initial therapy results in decrease of serum CRP levels in peridontitis patients with CVD or CVD risk factors. It is suggested that the risk class of CVD be decreased by periodontal therapy.
