Abstract:We reveal a contradiction in measure-theoretic probability. The contradiction is an "equation" $1/2 = 0$ with its two sides representing probabilities. Unlike known paradoxes in mathematics, the revealed contradiction cannot be explained away and actually indicates that measure-theoretic probability is inconsistent. Appearing only in the theory, the contradiction does not exist in the physical world. So practical applications of measure-theoretic probability will not be affected by the inconsistency as long as "ideal events" in the theory (which will never occur physically) are not mistaken for real events in the physical world. Nevertheless, the inconsistency must be resolved. Constructive mathematics can avoid such inconsistency. There is no contradiction reported in constructive mathematics.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the status of some `unbelievable results' presented in the paper `On Some Contradictory Computations in Multi-Dimensional Mathematics' [1] published in Nonlinear Analysis, a journal indexed in the Science Citation Index. Among some of the unbelievable results `proved' in the paper we can find statements like that: (i) a linear transformation which is a rotation in R^2 with rotation angle theta different from nphi/2, is inconsistent with arithmetic, (ii) complex number theory is inconsistent. Besides these 'results' of mathematical nature [1],offers also a `proof' that Special Relativity is inconsistent. Now, we are left with only two options (a) the results of [1] are correct and in this case we need a revolution in Mathematics (and also in Physics) or (b) the paper is a potpourri of nonsense. We show that option (b) is the correct one. All `proofs' appearing in [1] are trivially wrong, being based on a poor knowledge of advanced calculus notions. There are many examples (some of them discussed in [2,3,4,5,6]of complete wrong papers using nonsequitur Mathematics in the Physics literature. Taking into account also that a paper like [1] appeared in a Mathematics journal we think that it is time for editors and referees of scientific journals to become more careful in order to avoid the dissemination of nonsense.

Abstract:If a mathematical theory contains incompatible postulates then it is likely that the theory will produce theorems or results that are contradictory. It will be shown that this is the case with Dirac field theory. An example of such a contradiction is the problem asociated with evaluating the Schwinger term. It is generally known that different ways of evaluating this quantity yield different results. It will be shown that the reason for this is that Dirac field theory is mathematically inconsistent, i.e., it contains incompatible assumptions or postulates. The generally accepted definition of the vacuum state must be modified in order to create a consistent theory.

Debunking Cantor: New Set-Theoretical and Logical Considerations

Abstract:For more than a century, Cantor's theory of transfinite numbers has played a pivotal role in set theory, with ramifications that extend to many areas of mathematics. This article extends earlier findings with a fresh look at the critical facts of Cantor's theory: i) Cantor's widely renowned Diagonalization Argument (CDA) is fully refuted by a set of counter-examples that expose the fallacy of this proof. ii) The logical inconsistencies of CDA are revisited, exposing the short-comings of CDA's implementation of the method of proof by contradiction. iii) The denumerability of the power set of the set of the natural numbers, P(N), is substantiated by a proof that takes full account of all the infinite subsets of N. Such a result confirms the denumerability of the set of the real numbers, R, and with it the countable nature of the continuum. iv) Given that the denumerable character of (probably) all infinite sets makes their comparison in terms of one-to-one correspondences a rather pointless exercise, a new concept of relative cardinality is introduced which facilitates a quantitative evaluation of their different magnitudes.

Big in Reverse Mathematics: the uncountability of the real numbers

Abstract:The uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ is one of its most basic properties, known far outside of mathematics. Cantor's 1874 proof of the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ even appears in the very first paper on set theory, i.e. a historical milestone. In this paper, we study the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics (RM for short), in the guise of the following principle: $$\hbox{for a countable set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$, there exists $y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus A$.}$$ An important conceptual observation is that the usual definition of countable set -- based on injections or bijections to $\mathbb{N}$ -- does not seem suitable for the RM-study of mainstream mathematics; we also propose a suitable (equivalent over strong systems) alternative definition of countable set, namely union over $\mathbb{N}$ of finite sets; the latter is known from the literature and closer to how countable sets occur 'in the wild'. We identify a considerable number of theorems that are equivalent to the centred theorem based on our alternative definition. Perhaps surprisingly, our equivalent theorems involve most basic properties of the Riemann integral, regulated or bounded variation functions, Blumberg's theorem, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. Our equivalences are also robust, promoting the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ to the status of 'big' system in RM.

Abstract:We discuss a class of proofs of Bell-type inequalities that are based on tables of potential outcomes. These proofs state in essence: if one can only imagine (or write down in a table) the potential outcome of a hidden parameter model for EPR experiments then a contradiction to experiment and quantum mechanics follows. We show that these proofs do not contain hidden variables that relate to time or, if they do, lead to logical contradictions that render them invalid.

On two recent extensions of the Big Five of Reverse Mathematics

Abstract:The program Reverse Mathematics in the foundations of mathematics seeks to identify the minimal axioms required to prove theorems of ordinary mathematics. One always assumes the base theory, a logical system embodying computable mathematics. As it turns out, many (most?) theorems are either provable in said base theory, or equivalent to one of four logical systems, collectively called the Big Five. This paper provides an overview of two recent extensions of the Big Five, working in Kohlenbach's higher-order framework. On one hand, we obtain a large number of equivalences between the second-order Big Five and third-order theorems of real analysis dealing with possibly discontinuous functions. On the other hand, we identify four new 'Big' systems, i.e. boasting many equivalences over the base theory, namely the uncountability of the reals, the Jordan decomposition theorem, the Baire category theorem, and Tao's pigeon hole principle for the Lebesgue measure. We discuss a connection to hyperarithmetical analysis, completing the picture.

Abstract:Violation of the CHSH inequality supposedly demonstrates an irreconcilable conflict between quantum mechanics and local, realistic hidden variable theories. We show that the mathematical assumptions underlying the proof of the CHSH inequality are, in fact, incompatible with the physics of the experiments testing such inequality. This implies that we cannot dismiss local realistic hidden variable theories on the basis of currently available experimental data yet. However, we also show that an experimental proof of CHSH inequality is, in principle, possible, but it is unclear how to implement, in practice, such an experiment.

The Biggest Five of Reverse Mathematics

Abstract:The aim of Reverse Mathematics(RM for short)is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. These minimal axioms are almost always equivalent to the theorem, working over the base theory of RM, a weak system of computable mathematics. The Big Five phenomenon of RM is the observation that a large number of theorems from ordinary mathematics are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of only four systems; these five systems together are called the 'Big Five'. The aim of this paper is to greatly extend the Big Five phenomenon as follows: there are two supposedly fundamentally different approaches to RM where the main difference is whether the language is restricted to second-order objects or if one allows third-order objects. In this paper, we unite these two strands of RM by establishing numerous equivalences involving the second-order Big Five systems on one hand, and well-known third-order theorems from analysis about (possibly) discontinuous functions on the other hand. We both study relatively tame notions, like cadlag or Baire 1, and potentially wild ones, like quasi-continuity. We also show that slight generalisations and variations of the aforementioned third-order theorems fall far outside of the Big Five.

Abstract:Recently, in Axioms 10(2): 119 (2021), a nonclassical first-order theory T of sets and functions has been introduced as the collection of axioms we have to accept if we want a foundational theory for (all of) mathematics that is not weaker than ZF, that is finitely axiomatized, and that does not have a countable model (if it has a model at all, that is). Here we prove that T is relatively consistent with ZF. We conclude that this is an important step towards showing that T is an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.

Abstract:G{ö}del's second incompleteness theorem forbids to prove, in a given theory U, the consistency of many theories-in particular, of the theory U itself-as well as it forbids to prove the normalization property for these theories, since this property implies their consistency. When we cannot prove in a theory U the consistency of a theory T , we can try to prove a relative consistency theorem, that is, a theorem of the form: If U is consistent then T is consistent. Following the same spirit, we show in this paper how to prove relative normalization theorems, that is, theorems of the form: If U is 1-consistent, then T has the normalization property.

A Reverse Mathematical Analysis of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and Basis Theorem

Abstract:This paper presents an expository reverse-mathematical analysis of two fundamental theorems in commutative algebra: Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and Basis Theorem. In addition to its profound significance in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, the Basis Theorem is also historically notable for its nonconstructive proof. The Nullstellensatz, on the other hand, is noteworthy as it establishes a fundamental connection between the more algebraic notion of ideals and the more geometric notion of varieties. We explore the conscious shift from computational to conceptual approaches in mathematical argumentation, contextualizing Hilbert's contributions. We formalize the relative constructivity of these theorems using the framework of reverse mathematics, although we do not presuppose familiarity with reverse mathematics. Drawing from contemporary mathematical literature, we analyze the Basis Theorem's reliance on nonconstructive methods versus the more constructive nature of the Nullstellensatz. Our study employs the standard tools of reverse mathematics, in particular subsystems of second-order arithmetic, to outline the minimal set-existence axioms required for these theorems. We review results showing that certain formulations of the Nullstellensatz are provable in the weak axiom system of $\mathsf{RCA}_0$, while the Basis Theorem requires stronger axioms, such as $\Sigma^0_2$-Induction. Consequently, we position these theorems separately within the Friedman-Simpson hierarchy. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the foundational requirements for these pivotal results in algebra.

Approximation theorems throughout Reverse Mathematics

Abstract:Reverse Mathematics (RM for short) is a program in the foundations of mathematics where the aim is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. Generally, the minimal axioms are equivalent to the theorem at hand, assuming a weak logical system called the base theory. Moreover, many (most?) theorems are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of four logical systems, together called the Big Five. For instance, the Weierstrass approximation theorem, i.e. that a continuous function can be approximated uniformly by a sequence of polynomials, has been classified in RM as being equivalent to weak Koenig's lemma, the second Big Five system. In this paper, we study approximation theorems for discontinuous functions via Bernstein polynomials from the literature. We obtain (many) equivalences between the latter and weak Koenig's lemma. We also show that slight variations of these approximation theorems fall far outside of the Big Five but fit in the recently developed RM of new 'big' systems, namely the uncountability of R, the enumeration principle for countable sets, the pigeon-hole principle for measure, and the Baire category theorem. In conclusion, one equivalence in second-order RM, namely for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, gives rise to many equivalences in higher-order RM, and we hope the case study in this paper can serve as a kind of template.

Abstract:An alternative mathematics based on qualitative plurality of finiteness is developed to make non-standard mathematics independent of infinite set theory. The vague concept "accessibility" is used coherently within finite set theory whose separation axiom is restricted to definite objective conditions. The weak equivalence relations are defined as binary relations with sorites phenomena. Continua are collection with weak equivalence relations called indistinguishability. The points of continua are the proper classes of mutually indistinguishable elements and have identities with sorites paradox. Four continua formed by huge binary words are examined as a new type of continua. Ascoli-Arzela type theorem is given as an example indicating the feasibility of treating function spaces. The real numbers are defined to be the points on the linear continuum and have indefiniteness. Exponentiation is introduced by the Eulerian style and basic properties are established. Basic calculus is developed and the differentiability is captured by the behavior on a point. Main tools of Lebesgue measure theory is obtained in a similar way as Loeb measure. Differences from the current mathematics are examined, such as the indefiniteness of natural numbers, qualitative plurality of finiteness, mathematical usage of vague concepts, the continuum as a primary inexhaustible entity and the hitherto disregarded aspect of "internal measurement" in mathematics.

Prawitz's Conjecture is False; So What?

Abstract:Several recent results bring into focus the superintuitionistic nature of most notions of proof-theoretic validity, but little work has been done evaluating the consequences of these results. Proof-theoretic validity claims to offer a formal explication of how inferences follow from the definitions of logic connectives (which are defined by their introduction rules). This paper explores whether the new results undermine this claim. It is argued that, while the formal results are worrying, superintuitionistic inferences are valid because the treatments of atomic formulas are insufficiently general, and a resolution to this issue is proposed.

Abstract:Deficiencies in Kauffman's proposal regarding a new way for building scientific theories are pointed out. A suggestion to overcome them, and in fact, independently construct mathematical theories which are beyond the reach of Goedel's incompleteness theorem is presented. This suggestion is based on bringing together recent developments in literature regarding inconsistent mathematics and self-referential mathematics.

Abstract:After highlighting the cases in which the semantics of a language cannot be mechanically reproduced (in which case it is called inherent), the main epistemological consequences of the first incompleteness Theorem for the two fundamental arithmetical theories are shown: the non-mechanizability for the truths of the first-order arithmetic and the peculiarities for the model of the second-order arithmetic. Finally, the common epistemological interpretation of the second incompleteness Theorem is corrected, proposing the new "Metatheorem of undemonstrability of internal consistency".

Abstract:In this paper we present a proof of Goodman's Theorem, a classical result in the metamathematics of constructivism, which states that the addition of the axiom of choice to Heyting arithmetic in finite types does not increase the collection of provable arithmetical sentences. Our proof relies on several ideas from earlier proofs by other authors, but adds some new ones as well. In particular, we show how a recent paper by Jaap van Oosten can be used to simplify a key step in the proof. We have also included an interesting corollary for classical systems pointed out to us by Ulrich Kohlenbach.

Abstract:In a recent paper Kent has pointed out that in consistent histories quantum theory it is possible, given initial and final states, to construct two different consistent families of histories, in each of which there is a proposition that can be inferred with probability one, and such that the projectors representing these two propositions are mutually orthogonal. In this note we stress that, according to the rules of consistent history reasoning two such propositions are not contrary in the usual logical sense namely, that one can infer that if one is true then the other is false, and both could be false. No single consistent family contains both propositions, together with the initial and final states, and hence the propositions cannot be logically compared. Consistent histories quantum theory is logically consistent, consistent with experiment as far as is known, consistent with the usual quantum predictions for measurements, and applicable to the most general physical systems. It may not be the only theory with these properties, but in our opinion, it is the most promising among present possibilities.

Abstract:Ramanujan Summation is one of the most important foundational results which is linked to many important results across fields including Renormalization Techniques having applications in QFT-Physics, to the celebrated most important 160 years old open problem of Riemann Zeta Function hence Riemann Hypothesis among many others. The Result of Ramanujan Summation is surrounded by beauty, magic, unknowability, Undecidability about the infinite Series Sum of such types under the set of existing rules involving Infinite Series. Ramanujan’s Summation Identity is one of the greatest mysteries in Science popular worldwide.In this paper, we try to show that since Ramanujan Summation and in general any such Summation involving Infinite Series Divergence could be fundamentally Self- Inconsistent and Undecidable Truth through Self-Reference! . This also leads to the Undecidability of the celebrated Riemann Hypothesis, involving Infinite Divergent Series i.e. Riemann Hypothesis can’t be consistently proven or disproven under this set of undecidable rules of axioms involving infinity due to foundational self-referential issue. This is like Godel’s Undecidable Statement through Self-Referential type Issue! Infact, the Rules of Such Infinite Divergent Series themselves appear uncertain, undecidable. Different Summation approaches involving complex analysis e.g. Abel, Cesaro, Zeta Regularization etc. also seem foundationally self-inconsistent!Even the famous Fields and Abel Laureate Michael Attiyah had recently claimed that Riemann Hypothesis is Undecidable statement in Godel context Many other greats have speculated the same in history but have not been able to clearly show why it could be Undecidable. We shall try to show if that’s true or not! This leads to probably one of the most important foundational results in Number Theory-Mathematics and raises future extremely important open questions for the development of mathematics!
