Abstract:Fast and accurate methods for predicting traffic properties and trend are essential for dynamic network resource management and congestion control. With the aim of performing online and feasible prediction of network traffic, this paper proposes a novel time series model, named adaptive autoregressive (AAR). This model is built upon an adaptive memory-shortening technique and an adaptive-order selection method originally developed by this study. Compared to the conventional one-step ahead prediction using traditional Box–Jenkins time series models (e.g. AR, MA, ARMA, ARIMA and ARFIMA), performance results obtained from actual Internet traffic traces have demonstrated that the proposed AAR model is able to support online prediction of dynamic network traffic with reasonable accuracy and relatively low computation complexity. Abstract:Predicting urban traffic flow is significant to intelligent transportation systems. Urban traffic flow data is a type of time-series data, which collects the traffic flow of a road section or area. So in this paper, we treat urban traffic flow prediction as a time series problem. The traditional method to tackle traffic flow prediction is difficult, because of the complex influence factors and nonlinear dependencies. Recently, LSTM based network has been widely used to model long-term series, but the memory of LSTM is typically too small and is not enough to accurately remember facts from the past. In this paper, we using memory time-series network with additional memory mechanisms to address urban traffic prediction problems. Historical data were divided into long-term and short-term two parts, long-term historical data models the overall trend and short-term historical data takes into account recent changes. The experiment results on two urban traffic flow datasets demonstrate the model is effective and outperforms baselines.

Abstract:Network traffic prediction is very important in network protocol designing,network management and high performance routers designing etc.Currently,ARMA and FARIMA time series are the main models used to fit and predict the network traffic.But the relation between time scale and time series models hasn't been studied.The network traffic was modeled according to different time scales using the traffic trace data taken from the Internet traffic archive,and the prediction performance of those models was compared.The results show that time series models perform better under the large scale(minute)than under small time scales(millisecond and second),and the performance of self similarity model FARIMA shows no advantage over other models.

Abstract:Real-time traffic speed prediction is an essential component of intelligent transportation systems applications on large-scale urban networks, e.g., proactive traffic management, advanced information provision, and prompt incident response. The family of traffic prediction models (e.g., convolutional neural networks) based on multi-detector speed diagrams in the time-space plane has been one of the most frequently used approaches for individual roads and the entire network. However, the predefined stacking sequence of traffic detectors along the spatial dimension of the speed diagram has a significant influence on the prediction performance, which makes network-wide speed prediction more challenging. To tackle the above challenge and better capture complicated traffic dynamics, we propose a novel speed prediction approach, named spatial-temporal deep tensor neural networks (ST-DTNN), for a large-scale urban network with mixed road types. Spatial and temporal dependencies of different road segments are simultaneously taken into account to improve the network-wide prediction accuracy. A scalable deep tensor is constructed for the ST-DTNN to eliminate the potentially negative impact caused by the manually stacking sequence of speed time series collected at different locations. Multi-step ahead traffic speeds can be simultaneously predicted based on probe data for a real-world large-scale urban network with hundreds of detectors installed on freeways, highways, and major/minor arterials. The results demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of the proposed ST-DTNN approach. Compared with the benchmark models, the ST-DTNN performs higher prediction accuracy during either peak or off-peak periods within an acceptable training time and has more stable prediction performance on the spatial scale. The proposed approach can be extended to develop network-wide traffic state monitoring, optimize routing in navigation services, and support congestion mitigation.

Abstract:Network traffic prediction is a very complex and difficult issue in the network management and design. This paper shows a model with a new algorithm (MLSL), and the model parameters can be modified by the new algorithm, which improves the adaptive ability of the model and makes the model adaptive function. Simulation and actual network traffic data experiment has proved that this algorithm has the advantage of high prediction accuracy and fast convergence, and its computing complexity is lower than other related algorithms.

Abstract:Traffic state prediction is an essential component and an underlying backbone of intelligent transportation systems, especially in the context of smart city framework. Its significance is mainly twofold in modern transportation systems: supporting advanced traffic operations and management for highways and urban road networks to mitigate traffic congestion and enabling individual drivers with connected vehicles in the traffic system to dynamically optimize their routes to improve travel time. Traffic state prediction with interval-based pointwise methods at 15-minute or hourly intervals is common in traffic literature. However, because traffic dynamics are a continuous process over time, the discrete-time pointwise methods for traffic prediction at a fixed time interval hardly meet the advanced demands of continuous prediction in modern transportation systems. To close the gap, we propose functional approaches to intraday and day-by-day continuous-time prediction for traffic volume. This research focuses on network-level traffic flow predictions concurrently for all locations of interest. Two functional approaches are introduced, namely, the network-integrated functional time-series model and the functional neural network model. With functional approaches a 24-hour intraday traffic profile is modeled as a functional curve over time, and sequences of historical traffic curves are used to predict traffic curves for near future days in a row and multiple locations of interest. We also include the functional varying coefficient model, Sparse VAR and traditional AR models in the comparative study; empirical results show that the network-integrated functional time-series model outperforms other approaches in terms of the accuracy of predictions at network-scale.

Abstract:Spatio-temporal mining neural networks have proven to be effective methods for predicting traffic flow in road networks. Existing research has designed numerous network structures but has often overlooked the impact of spatiotemporal correlation ranges on prediction results. To determine a reasonable spatiotemporal correlation range, we constructed a Inverse Isochrone (ISOv) model that considers the dynamic diffusion time and direction of traffic flow. The dynamic spatio-temporal correlation range defined by this model allows for the selection of highly relevant spatio-temporal features. We also designed the Dynamic Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (ISOv-DTGCN) method, which incorporates a graph pooling layer to adapt to the dynamically changing spatiotemporal correlation range and extract spatiotemporal correlations. Experimental results on a real dataset from the Wuhan road network show that the complete ISOv-DTGCN model improves prediction accuracy by approximately 15% in terms of RMSE compared to existing baseline models.

Abstract:Due to the complicated and ever-changing characteristics of Internet, network traffic prediction is a very complex and difficult issue in the network management and design. Generating self-similar series to simulate the network traffic and do some test, the experimental results of simulating and actual network traffic data have proved that this algorithm has the advantage of high accuracy and fast convergence.

Abstract:In view of the problem that traditional deep learning models do not consider the active time-varying characteristics of traffic flow (signal control information) when predicting the speed of urban road networks, and have low prediction accuracy, this paper proposes a speed prediction framework based on generative adversarial networks and graph neural networks. In this framework, the generator network simultaneously encodes the road network traffic flow and signal control information through active and passive prediction modules to generate prediction results, and then uses the discriminator network to improve the generalization of the prediction results. This framework can obtain higher prediction accuracy than traditional time series models and deep learning models. In the real road network speed prediction scenario, this framework can reduce the prediction error compared to the best benchmark model 3%-4%.

Abstract:Internet traffic analysis, models simulation and prediction play a very important part in the network management and design. This paper shows the new thought in network traffic modelling and prediction, and proposes a new algorithm to modify the model coefficient continuously. By far, most of models have not been considered to possess the adaptive ability. Our goal is to improve the model adaptive ability and make the model parameters update dynamically. We present the modified LSL algorithm, which can modify the parameters with each new input data update and has the property of fast convergence and high accuracy.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, multiple time series forecasting, which is typical of traffic flow forecasting, has become increasingly important in big data analysis. As the cornerstone of intelligent transportation system, traffic flow forecasting has important scientific research value and practical application value for urban traffic operation scheduling, quality and efficiency improvement of logistics transportation industry and public travel planning. Traffic flow prediction is always an important task of intelligent transportation system. Due to the complex temporal and spatial dependence of traffic flow sequence, it is very challenging to construct accurate traffic flow prediction in its ring neural network, graph network and Transformer model. Much of the existing work is based on very good models. Considering the advantages of convolutional networks, such as high computational efficiency and strong feature extraction ability, a traffic flow prediction model based on multi-view spatiotemporal convolution is proposed.

Abstract:Daily traffic flow forecasting is critical in advanced traffic management and can improve the efficiency of fixed-time signal control. This paper presents a traffic prediction method for one whole day using a deep neural network based on historical traffic flow data and contextual factor data. The main idea is that traffic flow within a short time period is strongly correlated with the starting and ending time points of the period together with a number of other contextual factors, such as day of week, weather, and season. Therefore, the relationship between the traffic flow values within a given time interval and a combination of contextual factors can be mined from historical data. First, a predictor was trained using a multi-layer supervised learning algorithm to mine the potential relationship between traffic flow data and a combination of key contextual factors. To reduce training times, a batch training method was proposed. Finally, a Seattle-based case study shows that, overall, the proposed method outperforms the conventional traffic prediction method in terms of prediction accuracy. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Enhancing Peak Network Traffic Prediction via Time-Series Decomposition

Abstract:For network administration and maintenance, it is critical to anticipate when networks will receive peak volumes of traffic so that adequate resources can be allocated to service requests made to servers. In the event that sufficient resources are not allocated to servers, they can become prone to failure and security breaches. On the contrary, we would waste a lot of resources if we always allocate the maximum amount of resources. Therefore, anticipating peak volumes in network traffic becomes an important problem. However, popular forecasting models such as Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) forecast time-series data generally, thus lack in predicting peak volumes in these time-series. More than often, a time-series is a combination of different features, which may include but are not limited to 1) Trend, the general movement of the traffic volume, 2) Seasonality, the patterns repeated over some time periods (e.g. daily and monthly), and 3) Noise, the random changes in the data. Considering that the fluctuation of seasonality can be harmful for trend and peak prediction, we propose to extract seasonalities to facilitate the peak volume predictions in the time domain. The experiments on both synthetic and real network traffic data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Accurate and real-time network traffic prediction is of paramount importance in the fields of network management, performance optimization, and fault diagnosis. It provides strong support for autonomous network control, network administration and network services. Therefore, we propose a novel approach for network traffic prediction, which integrates the Butterworth filter, Convolutional Neural Network and Long Short-Term Memory network(BWCL). First, this method the network traffic data to frequency domain processing, utilizing the Butterworth filter to extract its low-frequency components. The residual component is generated by subtracting the low-frequency component from the network traffic sequence. Then, CNN-LSTM prediction models are employed to capture the spatial and temporal features of the data in different frequency bands. Finally, the prediction results of the two models are linearly summed to represent the final predicted value. To validate the feasibility of the proposed model, we construct a variety of datasets with statistical features by taking the raw network traffic in single\multi-cell scenarios at two different temporal granularities: minutes and hours. In the Pytorch experimental environment, we evaluate the performance of the model using MSE , RMSE , MAE , and R2 performance metrics. The experimental results show that the prediction accuracy of the model is improved by 25% compared to the existing time series prediction models. This innovative approach provides new ideas in the field of time series forecasting, which has a broad application prospect.

Abstract:Many modern machine learning tools are inefficient due to the pronounced nonlinearity of traffic changes and nonstationarity. For this, the task of predicting the signs of increments (directions of change) of the process of time series is singled out. This article proposes the use of some results of the theory of random processes for a quick assessment of the predictability of signs of increments with acceptable accuracy. The proposed procedure is a simple heuristic rule for predicting the increment of two neighboring values for a random sequence. The connection of this approach to time series with known approaches to the prediction of binary sequences is shown. The possibility of using the experience of predicting the absolute values of traffic in predicting the signs of changes is considered.

Abstract:City-scale traffic speed prediction provides significant data foundation for the intelligent transportation system, which enriches commuters with up-to-date information about traffic condition. However, predicting on-road vehicle speed accurately is challenging, as the speed of the vehicle on the urban road is affected by various types of factors. These factors can be categorized into three main aspects, which are temporal, spatial, and other latent information. In this paper, we propose a novel spatio-temporal model named L-U-Net based on U-Net as well as long short-term memory architecture and develop an effective speed prediction model, which is capable of forecasting city-scale traffic conditions. It is worth noting that our model can avoid the high complexity and uncertainty of subjective features extraction and can be easily extended to solve other spatio-temporal prediction problems such as flow prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that the prediction model we proposed can forecast urban traffic speed effectively.

Abstract:Traffic speed prediction is an indispensable element of intelligent transportation systems. Numerous studies have devoted to high-precision prediction models. However, most existing methods implement the link-wise or network-wide input. The former is time-consuming especially for large-scale applications, while the latter may incur the dilemma of underfitting owing to the heterogeneous traffic states within the entire network. Herein, we propose a novel prediction scheme based on spatiotemporal traffic pattern clustering. Firstly, road segments are partitioned into several groups via the developed clustering approach, which considers both the observed data sequence and spatial topology structure. Subsequently, sequence-to-sequence learning architecture is employed for each group to generate predictions for the entire traffic network. Validated by a real-world dataset in Beijing, our proposed paradigm offers a significant improvement over other well-known benchmarks for various prediction intervals in terms of prediction accuracy and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Real-time road traffic prediction is a fundamental capability needed to make use of advanced, smart transportation technologies. Both from the point of view of network operators as well as from the point of view of travelers wishing real-time route guidance, accurate short-term traffic prediction is a necessary first step. While techniques for short-term traffic prediction have existed for some time, emerging smart transportation technologies require the traffic prediction capability to be both fast and scalable to full urban networks. We present a method that has proven to be able to meet this challenge. The method presented provides predictions of speed and volume over 5-min intervals for up to 1h in advance.
