Abstract:The stochastic reliable control problem for networked control systems (NCSs) subject to actuator failure and input saturation is investigated in this paper. In order to get the relationship between the maximum allowable consecutive packet dropouts, the packet dropout probability, the actuator failure matrix and the input saturation, a packet dropout probability dependent condition is given via linear matrix inequality (LMI) technology. Then, a suitable reliable controller is designed to ensure the closed-loop system to be exponentially mean square stable against actuator failures and input saturation. Finally, numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Dynamic Security Access Control Model Based on System Reliability

Abstract:This paper proposes a dynamic security access control model based on system reliability,so as to improve the flexibility of combination among multiple security access control strategies,and to ensure system security and practicality.The model can choose the proper kind of combination among the security access control strategies dynamically in order to deal with different system states and improve the whole system performance.Experimental results prove that this model makes the multiple strategies control more flexible,ensures the system security,and improves practicality of the system.

Abstract:Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are widely used in industry. Reliable PLC systems are vital to many critical applications. The reliability analysis of PLC is special because the hardware component and embedded software are combined and operated in a specific manner. This paper presents a probabilistic modeling for PLC systems, which considers both the hardware and software components. Three analysis strategies are proposed for probabilistic evaluation of reliability characterization. The first method is an input-based analysis which considers the impact of errors from primary inputs. The second one is an action-based analysis. It extends the first method by considering the impact of software-based processing deviations on primary inputs. The third method is an action-traverse analysis. It computes the reliability characterization in a single topological traverse through the primary inputs during the software execution. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches when compared to fault tree analysis.

Abstract:Systems subjected to switching random excitations are practically significant because they include many safety-critical systems such as power plants and communication networks. In this paper, the reliability of multi-degree, nonlinear, non-integrable Hamiltonian systems subjected to switching random excitations is investigated. Such a system is formulated as a continuous–discrete hybrid based upon the Markov jump theory. Stochastic averaging is applied to suppress the rapidly varying parameters of the Markov jump process in order to generate a probability-weighted diffusion equation. The associated backward Kolmogorov equation is then set up, from which the approximate reliability function and probability density of first passage time are obtained. The utility and accuracy of this approximate procedure are demonstrated by two examples.

Abstract:Programmable logic controller (PLC) system, a typical member in the embedded family, is now widely applied in industry. For safety critical PLC systems, reliability is of top significance. However, due to subcomponents' temporal correlations caused by the run-time execution of embedded ladder programs, the complexity of reliability analysis is greatly increased. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic model to analyze reliability of PLC systems, called run-time reliability model (RRM). RRM is automatically constructed based on the structure and run-time execution of the embedded ladder program. Moreover, it is also a dynamic bayesian network (DBN) capturing full dependencies in a PLC system. Then, according to execution semantics of RRM nodes, we present customized conditional probability distribution (CPD) tables to calculate final reliability of the system, with failure probability of every referenced component as refinement. The strength of this model is that not only does it explicitly specify the correlations between run-time execution of embedded software and system components, but also it serves as a computational mechanism for probabilistic inference. Besides, the proposed approach is superior to previous works in both accuracy and efficiency. Compared to monte carlo based simulation, the average error rate of reliability values inferred from RRM model is small.

Abstract:In this paper, a detailed set of reliability prediction methodology for switched reluctance motor drive (SRD) considering system specific control strategy and component fault classification is elaborated from component level to system level. At component level, introduction to SRD and its single switch chopping strategy is presented to capture characteristics of SRD reliability under a certain control strategy. The unique fault modes classification and summary methods which are tailored to SRD are applied for identification of system dominant fault modes. Then at system level, binary models (reliability block diagram and part-count model) and multivariate model (Markov model) are adopted to build systematic SRD reliability model, respectively. Especially in the Markov model, state transition diagram and state probability matrix P(t) are built in detailed description to constitute the graphical and numerical Markov reliability model. Conclusions can be drawn that compared with RBD, Markov model can capture the effect of specific control strategy on system reliability, and further demonstrates the stronger consistency with SRD practical operation. Fault simulation and experiments are conducted to illustrate the influence on system operation state caused by a control strategy. Also, the results verify the state assessment of system performance after component-level fault occurs.
Reliability And Inspection Policies Study Of Repairable System With N Kinds Of Repairmen

Abstract:This paper considers the reliability and inspection policies of a repairable system. The system has four models-normal, abnormal, hidden fault and failure. Normal, abnormal, hidden fault are working models. When the system is operating, it is inspected once every random period to know which working model is the system in. The diagnostic result for normal and abnormal may be wrong. When system is in hidden fault, diagnostic result is correct. After the system fails, it can be repaired by one of N kinds of repairmen according to the fault's situation. When the result of inspection is that the system is in normal or abnormal models it will accept preventive maintenance. Under the assumption that failure time is arbitrary continuous distribution and inspection interval time is exponential distribution, the reliability indices and the optimal inspection cycle of the system are obtained by using probability analysis and vector Markov process method. Researches on the result of numeral example indicate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:Due to the propagation, amplification, and concatenation in a failure process, the reliabilities of repairable multistate complex mechanical systems (RMCMSs) may be affected by a significant fluctuation due to a small exception associated with a reliability indicator. Focused on the problems arising from the lack of propagation relationships among fault modes, functional components, and failure causes in conventional reliability models, a novel framework for reliability modelling is proposed to comprehensively analyse the reliabilities of RMCMSs. First, the reliability models are abstracted as weighted and directed networks with five layers. Second, an improved failure mode and effects analysis (IFMEA) method combined with the D-number method and VIKOR approach is presented to determine the importance of reliability nodes. Third, a cut set of the reliability model is generated by any exception of a reliability indicator by considering the propagation relationships, and the reliability sensibility index is defined to characterize the fluctuations in system reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated in an actual reliability modelling application. As an intuitive method, the proposed framework inherits the advantages of conventional models but overcomes the drawbacks of these existing methods. Therefore, this method can be flexibly and efficiently used in the reliability modelling of RMCMSs. Moreover, the approach provides a foundation for comprehensive and dynamic reliability analysis and the failure mechanism mining of RMCMSs, and it can be used in other engineering applications.

Abstract:This paper presents the evaluation technique of the mean time to failure (MTTF) and reliability corresponding to a programmable logic controller (PLC) structures such as a single controller, a dual controller and a triple modular redundancy (TMR) controller. The failure and repair period of PLCs are surveyed, and the failure rate of each unit composing a PLC is calculated. The MTTF of a single PLC system and a dual PLC system is computed with failure rate and compared. Reliability and MTTF with respect to a dual controller and a TMR controller are calculated and analyzed by using the Markov model in order to present the operation standards of a PLC.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with analytical models and methods for reliability planning, optimization, and operation of the control and monitoring system of SMS-network platforms. The difference between classical models of reliability and models developed here is that the last ones take into account the economy is often an important aspect of reliability planning. Network providers operate in a competitive environment, so the main principle of reliability planning is not so much to increase reliability as well (as it’s done in fully technical approach) as to maximise the total profit of the network. Thus, new methods must allow to find the combination of factors (costs, investments into reliability, redundancy and increased maintenance, the profit from system operation, penalties for delays and failures, risks defined in a service level agreement, etc.) that maximises the profit. We employ the well-known from an actuarial science a model that considers a network through two cash flows: incoming cash from customers and outgoing claims paid due unreliability under SLA. Also we include into the optimisation model more general assumptions about the reliability of systems: different ways of reliability improvements and redundancy, non-exponentially distributed failures and recoveries, dependent failures, and reliability control.

Abstract:Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are widely used in industry. The reliability of the PLC is vital to many critical applications. This paper presents a novel approach to the symbolic analysis of PLC systems. The approach includes, (1) calculating the uncertainty characterization of the PLC system, (2) abstracting the PLC system as a Hidden Markov Model, (3) solving the Hidden Markov Model with domain knowledge, (4) combining the solved Hidden Markov Model and the uncertainty characterization to form a regular Markov model, and (5) utilizing probabilistic model checking to analyze properties of the Markov model. This framework provides automated analysis of both uncertainty calculations and performance measurements, without the need for expensive simulations. A case study of an industrial, automated PLC system demonstrates the effectiveness of our work.

Abstract:High reliability is the key to performance of electrical control equipment. PLC combines computer technology, automatic control technology and communication technology and becomes widely used for automation of industrial processes. Some requirements of complex PLC systems cannot be satisfied by the traditional verification methods. In this paper, an efficient method for the PLC systems modeling and verification is proposed. To ensure the high-speed property of PLC, we proposed a technique of “Time interval model” and “notice-waiting”. It could reduce the state space and make it possible to verify some complex PLC systems. Also, the conversion from the built PLC model to the Promela language is obtained and a tool PLC-Checker for modeling and checking PLC systems are designed. Using PLC-Checker to check a classical PLC example, a counter-example is found. Although the probability of this logic error occurs very small, it could result in system crash fatally.

Abstract:<p>The transition from analog to digital safety‐critical instrumentation and control (I&C) systems has introduced new challenges for software experts to deliver increased software reliability. Since the 1970s, researchers are continuing to propose software reliability models for reliability estimation of software. However, these approaches rely on the failure history for the assessment of reliability. Due to insufficient failure data, these models fail to predict the reliability of safety critical systems. This paper utilizes the Bayesian update methodology and proposes a framework for the reliability assessment of the safety‐critical systems (SCSs). The proposed methodology is validated using experiments performed on real data of 12 safety‐critical control systems of nuclear power plants.</p>

Abstract:Reliability analysis is an important part of safety critical programmable logic controller (PLC) systems. The complexity of PLC system reliability analysis arises in handling the complex relations among the hardware components and the embedded software. Different embedded software types will lead to different arrangements of hardware executions and different system reliability quantities. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic model, called the hybrid relation model (HRM), for the reliability analysis of PLC systems. Its construction is based upon the execution logic of the embedded software and the distribution of the hardware components. We prove the constructed HRM to be a Bayesian network (BN) that captures the execution logic of the embedded software. Then, we map the hardware components to the corresponding HRM nodes and embed the failure probabilities of the hardware components into the well-defined conditional probability distribution tables of the HRM nodes. With the computational mechanism of the BN, the HRM handles the failure probabilities of the hardware components as well as the complex relations caused by the execution logic of the embedded software. Experiment results demonstrate the accuracy of our model.

We have derived the expression of the reliability of a system using the Markovian model for the transfer of control between modules in order. We have given the expression of reliability by considering both benign and catastrophic failure. The expression of reliability presented in this work is applicable for some control software which are designed to detect its own internal errors.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe reliability of multi-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs) is affected by several inter-dependent system-level and physical effects. Accurate and fast reliability modeling is a primary challenge in the design and optimization of reliable MPSoCs. This paper presents a reliability modeling framework that integrates device-, component-, and system-level models. This framework contains modules for electromigration, time-dependent dielectric breakdown, stress migration, and variable-amplitude thermal cycling. A new statistical reliability distribution is proposed for accurate characterization of components containing too few devices for an extreme value distribution to be appropriate. A hierarchical system-level survival lattice based Monte Carlo technique is used to estimate the temporal fault distributions of MPSoCs that use arbitrary static and dynamic reliability-enhancing redundancy schemes. Physical process variation, which may have a significant impact on MPSoC reliability, is considered in the model. The proposed modeling technique has only 5% average error in mean time to failure and reduces simulation time by nearly 3 orders of magnitude relative to a non-hierarchical Monte Carlo technique

Abstract:As the class notation of DP system increases, the states and components of interest rapidly becomes large leading to difficulty in constructing and solving the reliability model. The key point of this paper is innovatively using the Markov modeling method to quantitatively assess the reliability of Class 3 DP control system, although the Markov methodology is not new in reliability analysis. To simplify the Markov process, the target Class 3 DP control system is decomposed into main DP and back-up DP system and the whole system is modeled using Markov models of sub-systems. The failure rate of the whole system can be obtained from the Markov models of two independent subsystems. Finally, the reliability of the whole Class 3 DP control system can be predicted with subsystem failure rates. The results present can be used for reliability-centered design and maintenance of DP control system.

Abstract:Redundant controllers are widely used in control systems of nuclear-powered facilities requiring high reliability.The reliability of dual-redundant controllers is improved by analyzing the controllers' possible working states in a state transition diagram.The two critical circumstances where the reliability is impaired are failures caused by dual-master collisions and the loss of redundancy resulting from the failure of a stand-by unit.To avoid these critical circumstances, this paper presents a redundant controller scheme with dual dedicated communication paths using heartbeat double checking and slave reporting.A Markov-chain model was developed to evaluate the reliability of redundant controllers and the effectiveness of this scheme.The results show that this redundant controller design significantly improves the reliability with a three orders of magnitude reduction of the failure rate.

Abstract:The article discusses the option of constructing of the mathematical model of the reliability of a computer system (CS), which is functioning in the residual class system (RCS). In contrast to the known ones, the proposed mathematical model of reliability, in terms of the probability of failure-free operation, takes into account the influence of the reliability of switching devices on the process of functioning of the CS in the RCS. The results of studies of the proposed mathematical model of the reliability of the CS and the results of the comparative analysis of reliability showed that the use of the RCS provides higher reliability of the CS with lower hardware costs) than the majority tripleting method of the CS, which is widely used in the positional binary notation. This is achieved due to the fact that in the considered version of the mathematical model of the CS reliability, such types of redundancy as: structural, informational and functional, the presence of which is due to the properties of the RNS, are more fully taken into account. This circumstance makes it possible to apply the appropriate backup methods. The article shows that a gain in the amount of CS equipment is achieved from 2.5 to 42%.
