Abstract:Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) provide a promising on-chip solution for powering future microdevices. However, their practical applications have been seriously hindered by IC-incompatible manufacturing processes and dimensional limitations. Here, interdigital MSCs with in situ fabricated 3D polysilicon/nickel nanoforest (SNNF) electrodes were developed through a scalable IC-compatible process. The produced MSCs exhibit an exceptionally small footprint area and an ultra-high spatial resolution that is one order of magnitude higher than those obtained by ex situ methods. With a new solid polymer electrolyte (PVDF-HFP)/LiBOB/TiO2, the all-solid-state MSCs demonstrated a superior device areal capacitance up to 0.53 mF cm(-2) (electrode areal capacitance: 5.47 mF cm(-2)), high volumetric power density of 4.15 W cm(-3) with an energy density of 0.15 mW h cm(-3), excellent cycling stability (>90% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles) and fast frequency response (relaxation time: 1.09 ms), showing great potential as a high-performance and reliable on-chip power source for miniaturized devices.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of wearable, highly integrated, and flexible electronics has stimulated great demand for on-chip and miniaturized energy storage devices. By virtue of their high power density and long cycle life, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), especially those with interdigital structures, have attracted considerable attention. In recent years, tremendous theoretical and experimental explorations have been carried out on the structures and electrode materials of MSCs, aiming to obtain better mechanical and electrochemical properties. The high-performance MSCs can be used in many fields, such as energy storage and medical assistant examination. Here, this review focuses on the recent progress of advanced MSCs in fabrication strategies, structural design, electrode materials design and function, and integrated applications, where typical examples are highlighted and analyzed. Furthermore, the current challenges and future development directions of advanced MSCs are also discussed.

Abstract:Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) stand out in the field of micro energy storage devices due to their high power density, long cycle life, and environmental friendliness. The key to improving the electrochemical performance of MSCs is the selection of appropriate electrode materials. To date, both the composition and structure of electrode materials in MSCs have become a hot research topic, and it is urgent to compose a review to highlight the most important research achievements, major challenges, opportunities, and encouraging perspectives in this field. In this review, research background of MSCs is first reviewed followed by their working principles, structural classifications, and physiochemical and electrochemical characterization techniques. Next, various materials and preparation methods are summarized, and the relationship between the MSC performance and structure and composition of materials are discussed in depth. Finally, this review provides a comprehensive suggestion on accelerating the development of electrode materials to facilitate the commercialization of MSCs.

Abstract:The increasing development of wearable, portable, implantable, and highly integrated electronic devices has led to an increasing demand for miniaturization of energy storage devices. In recent years, supercapacitors, as an energy storage device, have received enormous attention owing to their excellent properties of quick charge and discharge, high power density, and long life cycle with minimal maintenance. Micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs) as a promising candidate for miniaturized energy storage components have undergone considerable theoretical and experimental investigations. Particularly, planar MSCs with a 2D architecture design have more attractive application prospects due to their flexible design and excellent electrochemical performance. However, the major drawbacks of MSCs are their intrinsically low energy density. For this reason, researchers have conducted much investigation to improve their energy density in order to promote their practical application. Herein, the recent development and progress of planar MSCs from the scope of the substrates, electrode materials, fabrication methods, electrochemical properties, and applications are discussed. Finally, the currently existing challenges and developments associated with planar MSCs are also discussed. All in all, planar MSCs have great application potential in various fields of electrochemical energy storage, self‐powered wireless sensors, and stimuli‐responsive and photoresponsive, alternating current line filtering.

Abstract:Micro‐supercapacitors, emerging as promising micro‐energy storage devices, have attracted significant attention due to their unique features. This comprehensive review focuses on two key aspects: the scalable fabrication of MSCs and their diverse applications. The review begins by elucidating the energy storage mechanisms and guiding principles for designing high‐performance devices. It subsequently explores recent advancements in scalable fabrication techniques for electrode materials and micro‐nano fabrication processes for micro‐devices. The discussion encompasses critical application domains, including multifunctional MSCs, energy storage integration, integrated power generation, and integrated applications. Despite notable progress, there are still some challenges such as large‐scale production of electrode material, well‐controlled fabrication technology, and scalable integrated manufacture. The summary concludes by emphasizing the need for future research to enhance micro‐supercapacitor performance, reduce production costs, achieve large‐scale production, and explore synergies with other energy storage technologies. This collective effort aims to propel MSCs from laboratory innovation to market viability, providing robust energy storage solutions for MEMS and portable electronics.

The recent boom in portable electronic devices requires high-performance SCs that are flexible, simplified, thin, and integrated. Abstract:The applications of carbon-based micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) based on the electrical double layer capacitance mechanism are usually limited by the extremely low specific capacitances and energy storage densities of carbon electrodes fabricated from less active, large-size carbon materials. As a promising alternative, high-activity N and O co-doped graphene quantum dots (N-O-GQDs) offer a combination of advantages, such as ultrasmall sizes, rich active sites, high hydrophilicity, and facile assembly into conductive carbon films. Here we report the facile electrophoresis construction of carbonbased MSCs for ultrahigh energy density storage using N-O-GQDs as the initial electrode material. The N-O-GQD MSCs show extremely high volumetric capacitances of 325 F cm(-3) in H2SO4 due to their high pseudocapacitive activity, high loading density, and enhanced electrolyte wettingability ascribed to a large amount of doped nitrogen and oxygen functional groups. They deliver an ultrahigh volumetric energy density, superior to that of thin-film lithium batteries. Three connected all-solid-state N-O-GQD MSCs can light a red light-emitting diode. Furthermore, the pseudocapacitive MSCs maintain high power densities, and cycling stability owing to improvements in electrical conductivity and electrolyte penetration. The important results highlight the promising applications of high-activity nanographenes in on-chip power sources for driving diverse micro-devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Continuous development and miniaturization of electronic devices greatly stimulate the research for miniaturized energy storage devices. Supercapacitor, also called electrochemical capacitor or ultracapacitor, as one of the most promising emerging energy storage devices, is of great interest owing to its high power density, fast charge and discharge rates, and long cycle-lives. However, conventional supercapacitors are too large to be integrated with miniaturized electronic devices. Therefore, much research has been devoted to designing and fabricating high-performance miniaturized supercapacitors, also called micro-supercapacitors with typical device feature sizes in the range of centimeter or even millimeter that can be placed directly on a chip and integrated with other microelectronic devices for replacing or complementing thin film batteries or microbatteries for powering them. This paper briefly discusses main factors affecting the performance of micro-supercapacitors and mainly focuses on the architectural consideration of a micro-supercapacitor. Latest advances in the designing and fabrication of planar micro-supercapacitors for on-chip energy storage and related electrode materials are highlighted. Moreover, prospects and challenges in this field are discussed that are critical for further development of high-performance micro-supercapacitors.

Abstract:The rapid development of miniaturized electronic devices has greatly stimulated the endless pursuit of high-performance on-chip micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) delivering both high energy and power densities. To this end, an advanced three-dimensional (3D) microelectrode architecture design offers enormous opportunities due to high mass loading of active materials, large specific surface areas, fast ion diffusion kinetics, and short electron transport pathways. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the rational design of 3D architectured microelectrodes including 3D dense microelectrodes, 3D nanoporous microelectrodes, and 3D macroporous microelectrodes. Furthermore, the emergent microfabrication strategies are discussed in detail in terms of charge storage mechanisms and structure-performance correlation for on-chip MSCs. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on future opportunities and challenges in this thriving field.

Abstract:With the rapid development of miniaturized multi-functional systems, micro-energy-storage devices have drawn increasing attention due to the importance of power supply. In this paper, a novel fabrication for freestanding solid-state micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) has been proposed and developed by combining electrolyte transferring with laser patterning process. Typical freestanding MSC is composed of interdigital carbon nanotube/nanofibers as active material employed by laser patterning process, PVA/H3PO4 as both the solid-state electrolyte and the flexible substrate, and gold layer as the current collector. With the in-planar electrode and electrolyte-substrate layout, the dimension of the MSC could be greatly decreased without excess substrate. Taking advantage of electrospinning nanofibers with large surface area and carbon nanotubes with high conductivity, we optimize the line-width (200 mu m) of the interdigital finger of the MSC, which exhibits high areal capacitance (15.6 mF/cm(2)) and excellent cycling stability. With the serial design, the working range of MSC units could be greatly enhanced in wearable devices and low-power electronic systems. Therefore, such flexible MSC is a promising candidate to satisfy the requirements of miniaturized energy systems. [2017-0059]

Abstract:On-chip micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), as promising power candidates for microdevices, typically exhibit high power density, large charge/discharge rates, and long cycling lifetimes. However, as for most reported MSCs, the unsatisfactory areal energy density (<10 mu Wh cm(-2)) still hinders their practical applications. Herein, a new-type Zn-ion hybrid MSC with ultrahigh areal energy density and long-term durability is demonstrated. Benefiting from fast ion adsorption/desorption on the capacitor-type activated-carbon cathode and reversible Zn stripping/plating on the battery-type electrodeposited Zn-nanosheet anode, the fabricated Zn-ion hybrid MSCs exhibit remarkable areal capacitance of 1297 mF cm(-2) at 0.16 mA cm(-2) (259.4 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.05 A g(-1)), landmark areal energy density (115.4 mu Wh cm(-2) at 0.16 mW cm(-2)), and a superb cycling stability without noticeable decay after 10 000 cycles. This work will inspire the fabrication and development of new high-performance microenergy devices based on novel device design.
Three dimensional high-performance micro-supercapacitors with switchable high power density and high energy density

Abstract:In the field of microscale energy storage, the fabrication of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with high power density and high energy density has always been a focus of research. In this work, laser-induced porous graphene and chemically deposited manganese dioxide nanoparticles are used as electrode materials, and a switchable MSC with two energy storage principles is obtained by designing symmetric interdigitated and square electrode structures. The aim is to overcome the preparation challenge of supercapacitors with high energy density and high power density by switching between two modes. In this MSC, the energy density of the high energy density mode (5.89 μW h cm-2) is 3.36 times that of the high power density mode (1.75 μW h cm-2), while the power density of the high power density mode (43.06 μW cm-2) is 1.44 times that of the high energy density mode (29.96 μW cm-2). In addition, under the drive of five serially connected MSCs, 27 LED lights can be continuously lit for 5 minutes. Therefore, this work provides a facile and novel method for the development of MSCs with high power density and high energy density, suggesting a great practical application value in the development of MSCs.
Flexible, Planar Integratable and All-Solid-state Micro-Supercapacitors Based on Nanoporous Gold/ Manganese Oxide Hybrid Electrodes Via Template Plasma Etching Method

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of miniaturization of mobile devices and wearable integrated electronics system, flexible integrated micro electrical energy storage devices with high-performance, deformability and cycling stability will be the technological trend for a long time in the future. In this work, template plasma etching method and electrochemical deposition method have been combined to fabricate nanoporous gold/manganese oxide interdigitated electrodes that can be easily utilized in flexible micro-supercapacitors(MSCs). These MSCs exhibit relatively high specific capacitance of 18.47mF cm(-2) in 0.5M Na2SO4 electrolyte and 11.58 mF cm(-2) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/LiCl solid state electrolyte. A high energy density of 6.93 x 10(-7) Wh cm(-2) to 1.03 x 10(-6) Wh cm(-2) while power density ranging from 4.63 x 10(-5)Wcm(-2) to 3.12 x 10(-4)Wcm(-2). The NPG/MnO2 MSCs excellent long term cycling stability of 80.7% can be seen even after cycling for 5000 times. Moreover, the MSCs devices also demonstrate a sound flexibility and a superior frequency response (1.25 ms). In addition, the effects of various finger width and finger spacing on performance are compared, the critical importance of adjusting interdigitated structure is highlighted. Abstract:Micro supercapacitors (MSCs) with ultrahigh capacitance density and thin-film fabrication capability are promising energy storage and power-filtering devices for integrated systems. However, the wafer-scale fabrication and encapsulation of MSCs are challenging, mainly resulting from incompatibility between chemically active electrolytes and standard microfabrication techniques. Here, we report a complete wafer-scale preparation of well-encapsulated MSCs based on newly developed electrolyte deposition and device package methods. The proposed encapsulation process only compromises spin-coating and photolithography processes; hence, it is cost-effective, gives high throughput, and is intrinsically scalable. The experimental results demonstrate that the encapsulation approach promises a longer device lifetime and minor impacts on capacitive performances. The prototype MSC has a capacitance density exceeding 2 mF/cm2 at a high scan rate of 10 V/s and a time constant of ~8 ms, meeting the AC-line-filtering requirements. Moreover, the process uniformity, operation leakage current, and temperature endurance range are also investigated and discussed. This work will significantly promote the practical application of MSCs.
High-energy-density, All-Solid-state Microsupercapacitors with Three-Dimensional Interdigital Electrodes of Carbon/polymer Electrolyte Composite

Abstract:Novel all-solid-state microsupercapacitors (MSCs) with three-dimensional (3D) electrodes consisting of active materials (i.e., graphene or activated carbon (AC) particles) and polymer electrolyte (PE) designed for high-energy-density storage applications were fabricated and tested in this work. The incorporation of PE in the electrode material enhances the accessibility of electrolyte ions to the surface of active materials and decreases the ion diffusion path during electrochemical charge/discharge. For a scan rate of 5 mV s−1, the MSCs with graphene/PE and AC/PE composite electrodes demonstrate a very high areal capacitance of 95 and 134 mF cm−2, respectively, comparable to that of 3D MSCs with liquid electrolyte. In addition, the graphene/PE MSCs show a ∼70% increase in specific capacitance after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles, attributed to an electro-activation process resulting from ion intercalation between the graphene nanosheets. The AC/PE MSCs also demonstrate excellent stability. The results of this study illustrate the potential of the present 3D MSCs for various high-density solid-state energy storage applications.

Electrochemical Materials Design For Micro-Supercapacitors

Abstract:Micro-supercapacitors (m-SC) arise from the demand of developing micro-power system for MEMS devices, attracting much research interest in recent years. As m-SC has to achieve high areal energy and power densities, the volumetric capacitance and the rate capability of the electrode materials have become the most important concern. This review compares the intrinsic electrochemical properties of the state-of-art electrode materials for m-SC, reporting the recent advances in the three types of electrode materials. For carbon electrode materials, two developing trends are identified: one is to enhance volumetric capacitance through a proper film fabrication process, while the other one is to further promote its fast response rate by making open-structured devices. For pseudocapacitive oxides, in order to achieve better rate capability and cyclability, the relationship between the electrochemical property and the structure is worth further exploration. As an example, the composition, microstructure, and morphology of the molybdenum oxide film were optimized to realize superior electrochemical performance as an electrode material for m-SC. Architecture design is another important factor for m-SC. In-plane interdigital architectures have proven its success to fabricate fast response devices. Further study on the interplay effect between such architecture and pseudocapacitive materials is in need.

However, the unsatisfied electrochemical performance (e. g., narrow potential window, low areal energy density) impedes their wide applications. Here, we demonstrate a novel type of nonaqueous Na-ion hybrid MSC, using VS2 nanosheets grown on electrochemically exfoliated graphene (VS2@EG) as the negative electrode and activated carbon as the positive electrode in nonaqueous sodium-ion electrolyte. Such constructed nonaqueous Na-ion hybrid MSCs show a remarkable areal capacitance of 110.7 mF cm(-2) at 0.2 mA cm(-2) in a wide potential range of 0.01-3.5 V and an outstanding areal energy density of 188.3 mu Wh cm(-2). Besides, an impressive cycling stability up to 5000 cycles without noticeable decay is also achieved for the nonaqueous Na-ion hybrid MSCs. This new hybrid MSC holds great potential application in on-chip electronics.
