Abstract:This paper presented a comparative study on the non-motorized driver behavior with flashing green and with green countdown during signal transition phase. Two similar intersections in Shanghai were eventually selected to be recorded with two video cameras and analyzed using video image processing software. An in-depth comparative analysis of stop/pass decision process with flashing green and with green countdown was carried out by identifying the non-motorized driver behavior four types which were "late arrivals", "racers", "runners", and "impatients". The findings indicated that the earlier stop/pass decisions to be made with green countdown and green countdown had a greater impact on conservative non-motorized drivers than flashing green. Based on the analysis of approaching speed at the decision point and the average number per cycle of "racers" and i°runners", it can be concluded that the risk probability at the intersection with green countdown is bigger, but the severity of accidents with flashing green is larger. Analyzing the share non-compliant of the four types of non-motorized vehicles, two results can be found: Non-motorized drivers overestimated the time to the end of amber with flashing green and green countdown, but the strength of overestimation with green countdown is larger.; Green countdown would only help to encourage stopping but not curbing red-violations compared the flashing green.
