Abstract:The effect of hydrothermal (HTP) and Ca(OH)2 pretreatments on the biogas produced by the anaerobic digestion of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was studied. HTP, Ca(OH)2 and combination pretreatment had significant effects on hemicellulose and lignin degradation during pretreatment and methane yield through digestion. The highest biogas production observed in combination pretreatment HTP 180 + 8.5% of SCB reached 318 mL/g Volatile Solids (VS), which were 47% higher than the untreated SCB, with the highest methane content 69% and highest lignin degradation 44%. The functional groups and the structural changes in the pretreated SCB have also been analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Kinetic analysis of methane production potential from SCB was determined to compare ultimate methane yields and kinetic constants. The results of this research contribute useful information to improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of SCB by pretreatment.

Abstract:Canteen waste was hydrothermal pretreated to investigate the characters of degreasing, hydrolysis and digestibility by biochemical methane assays. Liquidization and hydrolysis were enhanced in hydrothermal pretreatment. pH of hydrolysate decreased, and SCOD and VFA increased significantly followed by increasing hydrothermal temperature. Floatable grease increased to appropriate ratio for removal, and digestion process completed in 4 days to 6 days with double degradation rate after pretreatment at 150 degrees C for 60 minutes. The 4-day incubation biogas yield was maximum after pretreatment at 170 degrees C, and the methane potential, however, was decreased at higher pretreatment temperature. Energy consumption of optimized pretreatment was recoverable with energy balance analysis.

Abstract:The effects of thermal pretreatment at moderate temperatures (70, 80 and 90 degrees C) and high temperatures (120, 140 and 160 degrees C) over heating durations of 10-120 min on the physical and chemical properties of kitchen waste and on anaerobic digestion were investigated. The results show that thermal pretreatment significantly enhances the solubilisation of organic compounds (chemical oxygen demand, crude proteins, crude fats and volatile fatty acids) and their biodegradability during subsequent anaerobic digestion. High temperature and long heating duration are beneficial for the release and reduction of organic compounds, and the efficiency of subsequent anaerobic digestion is improved markedly under these conditions. Moreover, both the methane production rate and methane yield were observed to increase significantly at moderate treatment temperatures when the anaerobic digestion time was longer than 50 h. Abstract:Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is envisaged as a promising technology to treat the lignocellulosic biomass. HT temperature is an important parameter influencing the hydrolysate compositions such as organic compounds and potential inhibitors, and therefore affect the subsequential anaerobic digestion (AD) process. Herein, HT-AD was employed to treat the wheat straw-derived digestate. The HT temperature of 190 °C was proved to be the best performance with a higehst reducing sugar yield (45.05 mg g −1 ) in the hydrolysate and a highest methane yield (120.8 mL g TS −1 ) from the AD of the hydrolysate, which was 42.5% higher than the methane yield in the control without the hydrolysate addition (84.8 mL g TS −1 ). 3-Furaldehyde was the dominant organic in the hydrolysates. The HT temperature of 210 °C led to the presence of AD inhibitory moieties (e.g., phenols and furans) in the hydrolysate, resulting in a low methane yield. Although the treatments with the addition of 100% hydrolysate outperformed those of 50% hydrolysate in the methane yields in the late stage, the latter had higher methane yields in the first stage, suggesting that the additional ratios of hydrolysates should be carefully considered in AD, especially the detrimental effects of inhibitors and adaptability issues of AD consortia. The MiSeq sequencing showed that the hydrolysis/acidogenesis was dominant in the first stage, while methanogenesis became dominant in the late stage with the acetoclastic/hydrogenotrophic methanogens ( Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium ) enriched in the hydrolysate-feeding reactors. These findings demonstrated that a integration of HT-AD was a promising approach for the digestate valorization and to reduce the potential carbon emission from waste treatments.
Enhanced Nitrogen Distribution and Biomethanation of Kitchen Waste by Thermal Pre-Treatment

Abstract:The effects of thermal pretreatment (90, 120, 140 and 160 degrees C) on the morphology (organic and inorganic nitrogen) and distribution properties (in solid phase, liquid phase and gas phase) of nitrogen in kitchen waste (KW) and on anaerobic digestion performance were investigated. The results show that thermal pretreatment could efficiently enhance the solubilisation of organic nitrogen compounds in KW, especially at high temperatures and long heating durations. Approximately 3.0-47.9% of organic nitrogen in KW decreases in total nitrogen content was obtained in the solid phase after thermal pretreatment. Higher biogas production and biodegradability of organics (in terms of the removal rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand, total organic nitrogen, and volatile solids) during subsequent anaerobic digestion were observed compared with the levels for untreated KW. An overall economic analysis indicates that the most profitable pretreatment process was achieved at 90 and 120 degrees C for treatment time of 30 and 15 min respectively, with a net potential profit (2-8 (sic) ton(-1) kW). Abstract:The effects of thermal pretreatment on the physical and chemical properties of three typical municipal biomass wastes (MBWs), kitchen waste (KW), vegetable/fruit residue (VFR), and waste activated sludge (WAS) were investigated. The results show that thermal pretreatment at 175 °C/60 min significantly decreases viscosity, improves the MBW dewatering performance, as well as increases soluble chemical oxygen demand, soluble sugar, soluble protein, and especially organic compounds with molecular weights >10 kDa. For KW, VFR and WAS, 59.7%, 58.5% and 25.2% of the organic compounds can be separated in the liquid phase after thermal treatment. WAS achieves a 34.8% methane potential increase and a doubled methane production rate after thermal pretreatment. In contrast, KW and VFR show 7.9% and 11.7% methane decrease because of melanoidin production.

Abstract:The effect of thermal pretreatment (55-160 degrees C) on the degradation characteristics of kitchen waste during anaerobic fermentation at medium temperature was investigated. The breakdown of both organics and inorganics and the enhancement of biogas production in batch tests caused by thermal pretreatment during subsequent anaerobic fermentation were examined. Considering the effect of the acidification products and ammonia nitrogen in the acidification phase on subsequent biogas production, the influencing factors and related characteristics of various fermentation types were investigated. The results indicate that thermal pretreatment cannot only promote the anaerobic degradability of KW and the biogas production from MW but can also reduce the retention time necessary for anaerobic acidification by five days. At 50-70 degrees C and 140-160 degrees C, the biogas production and organic removal rates of the subsequent anaerobic digestion process decreased slightly, whereas at 90 and 120 degrees C, superior results were achieved during digestion. Abstract:The study investigated the effects of methanogen pretreatment on pyrolysis behaviors of corn stalk (CS) by using Py-GC/MS analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Results indicated that biopretreatment changed considerably the pyrolysis behaviors of CS from four weight loss stages to two weight loss stages. Increasing biopretreatment time from 5 days to 25 days enhanced the kinds and contents of chemicals in volatile products. In pyrolysis products, the contents of sugars, linear ketones and furans decreased from 1.43%, 12.60% and 7.38% to 1.25%, 10.22% and 3.25%, respectively, and the contents of phenols increased from 15.08% to 27.84%. The most content change from 6.83% to 13.63% indicated that methanogen pretreatment improved the pyrolysis selectivity of CS to product the 4-VP, but it was disadvantageous to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, levoglucose and furfural. The changes of chemical compositions and structure of CS after biopretreatment were the main reason of the differences. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Biochemical methane potential (BMP) of fallen leaf and model kitchen garbage were tested after alkaline hydrothermal pretreatment to investigate the effects of thermal-chemical treatment on the digestibility of waste. pH of hydrolysate decreased after pretreatment, and organics were solubilized acceleratedly and hydrolyzed into low molecular products. Different optimum hydrothermal conditions were obtained for different waste. The BMP of leaf was observed when hydrothermal temperature was above 150 degrees C under alkaline condition, and SCOD concentration was 13 203 mg/L. Kitchen garbage was completely liquidized and suspended at 130 degrees C and SCOD concentration was 12412 mg/L, and addition of alkali show unobvious influence on methane production. Maximum specific methane yield were 112 mL/g VS and 276 mL/g respectively. The conversion rates on the basis of total carbon were 24.81% and 53.34%.
Enhanced Split-Phase Resource Utilization of Kitchen Waste by Thermal Pre-Treatment

Abstract:Our society currently faces the twin challenges of resource reclamation from rapidly escalating KW (kitchen waste) and increasingly expensive depletion costs and restrictive disposal legislation due to environmental impacts and fast depleting global resources necessitate action. This work studied the influence of thermal hydrolysis on the utilization of KW based on the principle of split phase processing, including solid phase for pig feed, liquid phase for anaerobic digestion and floating oil for biodiesel. It shows that the solid phase of KW after thermal treatment could satisfy the nutrition content requirements as raw materials for pig feed. The efficiency of the subsequent anaerobic digestion of liquid phase increased for KW pretreated at 120 degrees C and higher methane production and soluble chemical oxygen demand reduction were achieved after a pretreatment time of 40 min. Composition analysis of floating oil during thermal hydrolysis indicates that unsaturated fatty acid accounts for more than 61% and the main ingredients are monounsaturated fatty acid (more than 36%). All parameters important for biodiesel quality except the acid value could satisfy the biodiesel requirements according to the European standard. From overall analysis, the thermal pre-treatment was profitable with output value of $ 57.52 ton(-1) KW. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Co-digestion of wasted sewage sludge, restaurant kitchen waste, and fruit vegetable waste was carried out in a pilot plant with thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment. Steam was used as heat source for thermal hydrolysis. It was found 38.3% of volatile suspended solids were dissolved after thermal hydrolysis, with digestibility increased by 115%. These results were more significant than those from lab studies using electricity as heat source due to more uniform heating. Anaerobic digesters were then operated under organic loading rates of about 1.5 and 3 kg VS/(m(3) d). Little difference was found for digesters with and without thermal pre-treatment in biogas production and volatile solids removal. However, when looking into the digestion process, it was found digestion rate was almost doubled after thermal hydrolysis. Digester was also more stable with thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment. Less volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were accumulated and the VFAs/alkalinity ratio was also lower. Batch experiments showed the lag phase can be eliminated by thermal pretreatment, implying the advantage could be more significant under a shorter hydraulic retention time. Moreover, it was estimated energy cost for thermal hydrolysis can be partly balanced by decreasing viscosity and improving dewaterability of the digestate. Abstract:Biochemical methane potential (BMP) experiments of thermo-hydrolyzed sewage sludge are carried out to investigate the effects of thermal hydrolysis on the digestibility of sewage sludge. The results show that thermal hydrolysis pretreatment can facilitate the dissolving of organic solid in sludge, and soluble organics hydrolyzed into low molecular organics, in which volatile fat acids accounted for 30% - 40 % of soluble COD, so the digestibility of sewage sludge remarkably improved. The optimum pretreatment temperature and holding time were 170 degrees C and 30 minutes, under which the total COD removal rate enhanced from original 38.11% to 56.78%, and biogas production rate of COD in feeding sludge from 160mL/g to 250mL/g.

Abstract:The digestibility of sorted municipal solid waste (MSW) is often limited by the high content of structured green waste. The objectives of this study are to investigate the effect of alkaline hydrothermal pretreatment on the anaerobic digestion of sorted waste and to analyze the biogas production of different parts of the waste. The waste was hydrothermally pretreated in a dilute alkali solution. The hydrolysis product was then incubated in a 500 mL saline bottle to determine the biochemical methane potential (BMP) under mesophilic anaerobic conditions. The optimum hydrothermal condition was 170℃ at 4 g NaOH/ 100 g solid for one hour. The concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was 13 936 mg/L and the methane yield was 164 mL/g volatile solid (VS) for 6 days incubation at the optimum conditions. The biogas production was increased more than 50% over the control, with the methane conversion ratio on a carbon basis enhanced to 30.6%. The organic part of the sorted waste was mainly kitchen garbage and leaves. Model kitchen garbage completely liquified at 130℃ for one hour had a methane yield of 276 mL/g VS. The alkali addition slightly enhanced the hydrolyzation rate and methane yield. The biogas potential of leaves was improved by pre-treatment at above 150℃ under alkaline conditions.
