Abstract:Piying is an old Chinese art form and one of the origins of the modern movie. In Piying, the shadow of fur made characters with delicate carving could be seen by audience in front of the curtain. The artists behind the curtain control the actions of shadows using sticks fastened to the characters. The spirit of traditional Piying performance is to express rich stories and emotion through action change controlled by artists. Now, digital forms of Piying characters can be made as a way of retaining cultural legacy. The thing is how people could interact with the digital characters instead of just watching screen animations without the traditional improvising change. It is an exploration of ways of preserving the classic cultural treasure in a natural and novel way. The studio draws a connection between an old Chinese form and modern-day movies and TEI can provide a fun intersection between culture and creation.

Abstract:Abstract Shadow play is the collective name of different forms of art performance such as “shadow puppets” (皮影戏, Piyingxi), “puppet play” (傀儡戏, Kuileixi), and so on. It is a folk art taught through practices and oral traditions, “creating shadows with light”, and came into being over two millennia ago. It emerged in different forms at different times and across different regions and cultures, thus the phrase can connote slightly different art forms depending on cultural context. Chinese people later used “shadow play” to refer to films introduced to China. Such usage not only addresses the connections between film and opera, but highlights how film inherited traditions of shadow play – telling stories through shadows.

Abstract:Shadow play is one of the intangible cultural heritages in China and was popular in most areas of the country. But, only few people watch the play now because of the increasing popularity of new media. To attract more people's attention, we offer a new digitised performance method based on multi-point interactive controlling. The method maps transforms of a small group of controlling points to character controlling points accordingly. We define mapping rules that decrease the complexity of controlling with fingers. Even the performer with no skills can perform well in our run-time system. With this method, the performers can perform digitised shadow play effectively with no limitation of the traditional shadow play resources.

Abstract:Abstract In China, “Yingxi” (shadow play) is a compound term referring to various forms of traditional performance, shadow play in particular. As a folk art of oral and personal instruction for more than 2000 years, “presenting through light” is shadow play’s most basic artistic characteristic. This concept is recorded in different periods, nationalities and regions and the term Yingxi also refers to various signifieds. Following the historical convention, we adopt the term to name modern “film” introduced from the West. In fact, Yingxi not only emphasizes the internal relationship between film and Chinese traditional opera, but also adheres to the historical tradition of “performing stories with light and shadow” that embedded in the art of shadow plays.

Abstract:To promote the development of the intangible cultural heritage of the world, shadow play, many studies have focused on shadow puppet modeling and interaction. Most of the shadow puppet figures are still imaginary, spread by ancients, or carved and painted by shadow puppet artists, without consideration of real dimensions or the appearance of human bodies. This study proposes an algorithm to transform 3D human models to 2D puppet figures for shadow puppets, including automatic location of feature points, automatic segmentation of 3D models, automatic extraction of 2D contours, automatic clothes matching, and animation. Experiment proves that more realistic and attractive figures and animations of the shadow puppet can be generated in real time with this algorithm.

Abstract:This paper presents a method of performing traditional Shadow Play with the user's motions via Kinect depth image. Given the discrepancy between planar shadow puppet and spatial human body, we propose triggering puppet movements by the recognition of the user's motions, which could precisely maintain the motion feature of traditional shadow play, and the user could perform complex movements of the shadow puppet with simple motions. Besides, we render the background scene with Chinese Ink Painting effect to be compatible with planar image of shadow puppet, add waterfall, mist and flying birds to establish artistic conception, and also integrate traditional operatic arias to complete shadow play. The implementation results reveal that shadow puppet possessed of traditional puppet characters can be manipulated by users' motions in real time, and scenes of ink painting effect integrate planar shadow puppets well.

For hundreds of years, shadow puppetry has gradually spread with the performance of folk artists everywhere, due to the different customs and habits everywhere, it has begun its own localization process, especially Wang Shadow Puppetry in northern Sichuan. Abstract:Shadow Puppet Art is a traditional animated storytelling form in ancient China. Because of the development of technology and the impact of modern entertainment, shadow puppet is gradually disappearing. However, this traditional cultural heritage just needs to be retained, inherited and developed. Through our research on children, we find that children always imagine a story in their minds during painting, and such stories can only be expressed statically on paper by brush. In order to protect and inherit shadow puppet art culture and combine with the characteristics of children's drawing, we designed an interactive shadow toy making system that can transform children's static paintings into their own unique interactive shadow toys. The interactive system consists of two parts: the software system that automatically identify the image to split, complement, and generate an image of it being made into a shadow toy, and the intelligent hardware system that provides various interactive modes to the shadow toy. During this process, the children will experience brainstorming, assembling, interacting and demonstrating. While inherit the shadow puppet art culture, they can train their creative abilities by drawing their own works, hands-on skills by assembling the shadow toy and expression ability by telling stories with shadow toy.

Abstract:It has long been recognized that there is a particularly close relationship between art and politics in post-1949 China. And indeed this is true. The relationship, however, has usually been viewed only in “macro” terms, as one in which the Party – or the Party through its agents – stifles dissent and makes demands on writers and artists for works reflecting “the Party line”. As a general description of course there may be more than a grain of truth in this, but put in this way nothing could be less interesting. A more complex and dialectical picture emerges when one focuses more sharply on the process of artistic production in its immediate social context. The study of village-level drama and song-and-dance is ideal for this kind of investigation, in spite of the fact that it is “mere propaganda”: not only does it allow us a closer look at the actual implementation and effects of cultural policy, rather than just policy formulation, but often evidence is sufficient for us to discern salient features of the local cultural context and the ways in which artistic form and content have been adapted to specific local issues and local personalities. At this level in Chinese society, where relationships between cadres, artists and their audiences are personalized and the deeds of local labour heroes re-enacted on stage, the distinction between art and reality is not all that clear, stage action mimics political action, and vice versa, and the roles of the Party cadre and stage director are intertwined.

Abstract:Jiang Han Ping Yuan Shadow Puppetry, a traditional Chinese performing art rooted in Hubei Province’s cultural heritage, embodies intricate shadow play, music, and storytelling. This research aims to explore the efficacy of integrating Jiang Han Ping Yuan Shadow Puppetry into education for cultural protection and literacy development among students. Conducted in Qianjiang City, the birthplace of Jiang Han Ping Yuan Shadow Puppetry, the study employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on ethnomusicology, historical theory, and the anthropology of music. Two key informants, selected for their expertise and local cultural ties, provide insights into the historical development, artistic characteristics, and cultural resilience of this shadow puppetry. Through a meticulous analysis of historical aspects, artistic features, props, and cultural practices, the research uncovers the rich tapestry of Jiang Han Ping Yuan Shadow Puppetry. Findings suggest that despite challenges such as declining popularity and economic factors, the art form has persisted, showcasing adaptability through reforms and innovations. Recommendations include curriculum development, community engagement, and awareness initiatives to strengthen the role of Jiang Han Ping Yuan Shadow Puppetry in literacy programs and cultural preservation.

Abstract:—The art of shadow play is on the verge of extinction. With the development of computer technology, digital shadow play has gradually become an effective means to protect shadow play art. This comprehensive performing art covers drama, music, fine arts, painting, sculpture, is China's precious intangible cultural heritage, with high historical value, artistic value, aesthetic value and cultural value. However, the traditional shadow play production process is complicated and the cycle is long, and shadow play has high requirements for the performance scene and the performer's skills. The impact of all kinds of modern art and the limitations of traditional shadow play art lead to the slow development of traditional shadow play art. In the long-term development, although the performing art of shadow play absorbs the strength of multi-culture and pursues innovation and modernization, multi-culture and entertainment methods still have a huge impact on its development. With the development of computer technology, digital shadow play has gradually become an effective means to protect shadow play art. In the fast-paced and fragmented modern society, fewer young people pay attention to shadow play culture. In order to make young people pay attention to shadow play culture again, inherit and develop the rich connotation of shadow play culture, this study takes the mode of motion-sense interaction as an innovative way, discusses the combination and development of shadow play culture with modern new media technology and interactive devices, and innovatively designs shadow play art through digital interactive technology.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, based on the 5W theory of American scholar, Harold Dwight L asswellr, the research model of short video transmission of shadow play culture in Hua nxian County, Gansu Province is constructed. Through empirical research methods, thi s paper aims at the influence of 5W theory: Who, What, Which, Who, With What Effect. It is found that star communication has a significant positive impact on the transmis sion of shadow play culture, local villagers have a significant negative impact on the tr ansmission of shadow play culture, and professional teams have a significant positive i mpact on the transmission of shadow play culture. Text communication, picture comm unication, live video communication and cartoon communication all have a significant positive impact on the communication power of shadow play culture.

Abstract:Xiao Hong is one of the four most talented women of the Republic of China in the modern era, and is known as “the goddess of literature” of the 1930s. Xiao Hong can be said to be a female writer with a unique artistic style at that time. In terms of literary creation, her works contain a mixture of sad and happy emotional tone as well as a rigid and soft language style. Xiao Hong’s writing is fresh and natural because she believed in beauty even though she was traumatized. Abstract:Puppets, a kind of wooden figure whose movements are manipulated by artists, were frequently used in ancient Chinese singing and dancing activities and dramas. The uniqueness of substituting human beings for puppets has drawn tremendous attention from scholars. However, despite previous research on the long development process of puppet dramas, a considerable number of details remain neglected, and behind these details lies an abundance of complicated religious factors. Therefore, this paper uses several fragments as entry points in terms of puppet dramas' modeling, materials, craft, rites, function, artists, organization, and other aspects to comprehensively analyze the influence of witchcraft, Daoism, and Buddhism on China's puppet dramas. This research first unveils that a ferocious appearance and mahogany as a material, both used in puppets, are outer manifestations to reveal the magical power of witchcraft. Next, the rites performed in Li Yuan Jiao using ritual puppets were characterized by mystery in their implication and ambiguity in their religious sect, which was related to the attempt to hide their notorious identities as wizards on the part of the artists. Third, general puppet artists enjoyed a fairly high social status, conferred by their semi-religionist identity and the puppet dramas' historical status. Finally, the improvement in the puppet-making process and the emergence of skeleton-style puppets embody the secularization of the spread of Buddhism.

It also makes efforts to explore the profoundness and vitality of history, the presence of northeast China, and the culture and spiritual philosophy of the region. Undoubtedly, such narrative is self-perpetuating, just as is the historical process of northeast China.
