Abstract:Transit network design is an important component of transit system planning and development. This paper proposed a multi-level (skeleton, arterial, and feeder networks) and multi-mode optimization model for transit route network design. It overcame the disadvantages of the existing methods, which relied on excessive assumptions making the optimization problems over-simplified or idealized. In this research, the planning of skeleton and feeder networks was treated as a minimum cost and maximum flow problem and was solved by a labeling method. As for the arterial network, multi-objective optimization is an appropriate solution. In order to solve the multi-objective problem, a hybrid heuristic approach was introduced, which consists of a k-shortest path algorithm, a simulated annealing algorithm, and an artificial ant colony optimization mechanism. This approach not only took into account the transit planners’ knowledge and expertise, but also integrated the results of a resident trip survey. Finally, the proposed methodology was applied to a case study of the city of Zhaoyuan in China. The results show that the proposed method outperformed the competing methods in terms of direct travelers, percentage of demand, and the total travel time.
