Abstract:The rapid development of molecular biology and molecular genetics, especially the increasingly perfection of gene cloning technology make it possible that molecular mechanism of plant development can be researched genetically. In the recent decade, great achievements were obtained and a new emerging branch of genetics-plant developmental genetics-was borne. Researches on plant developmental genetics become one of the most popular research fields in life science. Abstract:With some technological breakthroughs such as sequencing and microarray in the recent years, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics have made a great progress in the world. Theories and technologies of crop breeding have also been revolutionarized considerably. Traditional crop breeding is based on phenotypic selection, which is often called "empirical breeding" with poor predictability, long breeding cycle and low breeding efficiency. Modern crop molecular breeding including marker-assisted breeding, transgenic breeding and molecular design breeding has become an important direction in the field of plant breeding. It is based on the combination of genotypic selection and phenotypic selection and thus target genes/alleles can be directly selected and pyramided. Therefore, the efficiency of molecular breeding can be improved and the breeding duration can be shortened. The paper defines the concept of molecular breeding, briefly analyzes current status and issues of crop molecular breeding in China, and discusses strategies in the future.

Abstract:Focusing on the global food security and analyzing the challenges now confronting human being of global climate change, sustainable development of agriculture, energy and environment, plant scientists should take the social responsibility and play the role in solving the global problems like food security from the developmental status and potential of plant science and technology. Moreover, by working with agronomists, ecologists and environmental experts, plant scientists do provide novel ideas and technologies for developing low carbon agriculture, for breeding new crop varieties with high yield and quality and stress resistance, for developing new type of energy plants, for supplying healthy foods and drugs, reasonably using land and water resources, and for ameliorating environment, making better contribution to the sustainable development of the globe and human being ourselves.

Abstract:One of the most exciting scientific advances in recent decades has been the realization that the diverse and immensely active microbial communities are not only 'passengers' with plants, but instead play an important role in plant growth, development and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. A picture is emerging where plant roots act as 'gatekeepers' to screen soil bacteria from the rhizosphere and rhizoplane. This typically results in root endophytic microbiome dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and to a lesser extent Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, but Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes being almost depleted. A synthesis of available data suggest that motility, plant cell-wall degradation ability and reactive oxygen species scavenging seem to be crucial traits for successful endophytic colonization and establishment of bacteria. Recent studies provide solid evidence that these bacteria serve host functions such as improving of plant nutrients through acquisition of nutrients from soil and nitrogen fixation in leaves. Additionally, some endophytes can engage 'priming' plants which elicit a faster and stronger plant defense once pathogens attack. Due to these plant growth-promoting effects, endophytic bacteria are being widely explored for their use in the improvement of crop performance. Updating the insights into the mechanism of endophytic bacterial colonization and interactions with plants is an important step in potentially manipulating endophytic bacteria/microbiome for viable strategies to improve agricultural production.

Abstract:Plant science in China has been developing steadily in 2014 in that there is a rapid growth in the original and creative research papers. Chinese scientists have made significant contributions to insights into important plant scientific issues, such as the mechanism of strigolactone signaling transduction in rice, the regulation of rice metabolic hereditary, the genetic basis of rice male sterility, agronomy and the environmental biology. Researches on plant genomics exhibit multi-dimensional and integrative trends, spaning from function to evolution with diverse materials from model crops to cash crops. Significant progresses have been made on the responses of ecosystem carbon sink to global climate change. The achievements of plant sciences, especially in rice biology, in China have been drawn great attentions by the high impact journals including Nature. This review aims to provide an overall picture of plant science researches in China and highlights some of the important findings in 2014.

Abstract:Plant science in China continued to forge ahead in 2016, with a steady increase in number of original articles published in the top high-impact-factor international journals. Journals of Chinese plant science improved and entered the top three ranks of research journals in the world. Chinese scientists have made impressive and enviable achievements in many important field of plant science. The molecular genetics mechanism of heterosis in rice yield was included in the "Top 10 achievements in Chinese Science in 2016". The "Breakthrough of the year: The top 10 scientific achievements of life science in China in 2016" included studies on signaling between male and female gametophytes during fertilization in plants and the perception mechanism of the strigolactones receptor. Plant science in China, especially in the field of crop research, represented by rice science, is occurring in the international arena. For example, a series of significant advance has been made in rice genome resources and technology platform, resequencing, clone of rice functional genes and analysis of regulatory network(revealing the mechanism of disinhibition activation of strigolactones signal transduction, interpreting sterility hybrid between indica and japonica at molecular level and the mechanism of action of wide compatibility gene S5, finding a genomic loci of controlling cold tolerance of rice), leading the scientific research of rice and even crops in the world. In this review, we comment on the significant progress made in plant science in China in 2016, review the latest findings and hot events in plant science in 2016, and share the great achievements made by Chinese scientists.

Abstract:Abstract Orchidaceae is one of the largest, most diverse families in angiosperms with significant ecological and economical values. Orchids have long fascinated scientists by their complex life histories, exquisite floral morphology and pollination syndromes that exhibit exclusive specializations, more than any other plants on Earth. These intrinsic factors together with human influences also make it a keystone group in biodiversity conservation. The advent of sequencing technologies and transgenic techniques represents a quantum leap in orchid research, enabling molecular approaches to be employed to resolve the historically interesting puzzles in orchid basic and applied biology. To date, 16 different orchid genomes covering four subfamilies (Apostasioideae, Vanilloideae, Epidendroideae, and Orchidoideae) have been released. These genome projects have given rise to massive data that greatly empowers the studies pertaining to key innovations and evolutionary mechanisms for the breadth of orchid species. The extensive exploration of transcriptomics, comparative genomics, and recent advances in gene engineering have linked important traits of orchids with a multiplicity of gene families and their regulating networks, providing great potential for genetic enhancement and improvement. In this review, we summarize the progress and achievement in fundamental research and industrialized application of orchids with a particular focus on molecular tools, and make future prospects of orchid molecular breeding and post-genomic research, providing a comprehensive assemblage of state of the art knowledge in orchid research and industrialization.

Abstract:Plant science in China has been developing rapidly, with an increased number of original papers published in top international journals. Chinese scientists have made remarkable achievements in insights into important plant scientific issues, such as the structural basis for energy transfer pathways in the plant PSI-LHCI supercomplex, the perception and tolerance of rice chilling, and the molecular mechanism of ethylene signal transduction. In the "Breakthrough of the year: The top 10 scientific achievements of life science in China in 2015", two outstanding outcomes of plant science were included. Chinese native plant scientists(including Youyou Tu and other scientists) found that artemisinin as a new drug to cure malaria, which won the Nobel Prize for natural science, marking a great achievement in plant chemistry and Chinese pharmacy. The achievement has drawn great international attention and also points to the effectiveness of the model developed by Chinese scientists—to focus on science and technology issues related to the major needs of the country. In this review, we provide a commentary on the significant progress made in plant science in China in 2015, review the latest findings and hot events in plant science in 2015, and share the great achievements made by Chinese scientists.
