Abstract:Though the research work of the history of Chinese Communist Party started as early as the Yan'an period, the establishment and great development of the descipline of party history occured after the reform and opening up. During the over 30 years since the reform and opening up, much achievements have been made in material collection, finding historical truth, broadening research field, evaluate major events and figures, compiling books and others. The research in future will focus on the following few aspects: research of the period of democratic revolution and the period of socialism construction will be continued; the period since the reform and opening up will be the key of the further study; research of certain specific themes will be conducted systematically and readings for the public will be compiled so that the achievements of the research will have more extensive social influence.

Abstract:new materials account for more than half of the total materials included in the book, this includes materials first made public since the 1990s. Finally, the book is compiled collectively, with the result that the quality is reliable and excellent. It is not a common monograph by an individual historian; instead, it has been compiled by one of the most prestigious think tanks in China. This institution is often referred to as the foremost authority on the history of the CCP. Therefore this monograph signifies the highest level of study on the history of the Chinese Communist Party. Indeed, there are still some problems, which need further discussion and deeper investigation in the future. For example, many in academia have differing opinions about whether the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the CCP should be defined as the end of the socialist revolution and construction. This view is upheld by the book reviewed here, but raises the question of how scholars should look upon the two trends of development in the history of the CCP.

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:The Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has overseen the compilation of a ten-volume Comprehensive History of Modern China, edited by the well-known historian Zhang Haipeng. The People's Publishing House of Jiangsu began publishing the work in 2006. Since then, each successive volume has received considerable interest in both Chinese and overseas academic circles. This project - totaling over 5,500,000 - characters boasts an unparalleled level of detail, not only in the narrative sections but also in its critical assessments which give readers a thorough understanding of the late Qing and republican periods. This work has also made great efforts to incorporate research done in a number of specific fields of modern Chinese history, and as a result its level of detail is in many ways equivalent to that found in specialized monographs.

Abstract:"already been decided" with the success of the (Maoist) strategies followed in the latter part of the War of Resistance (p. 186). The development of Maoist military practice and its recurrent problems with "internationalist" and "militarist" tendencies within the party are the focus of Meyer's occasional commentary. Unfortunately, the care and scholarship evident in the translations are less obvious in the text. While raising some new and interesting points, particularly in regard to intraparty factional disputes, the commentary as a whole offers a general and unexceptional history of military-political developments, at times only tangentially related to the documents that follow. A few quite fascinating documents (for example, no. 25, on the Red Army's policy toward deserters) are given no introduction at all. The rich and varied materials in this volume should prove useful reading for specialists in the fields of party history and military history and, perhaps above all, for graduate students inclined in those directions.

Abstract:The Volume Ⅱ of Li Zicheng depicts battles and fights of peasant rebellion led by Li Zicheng against Ming Dynasty,the contradictions between Li Zicheng and Zhang Xianzhong,and also those inside the ruling group of Ming.The conflicts,along with characters like Li Zicheng,Mrs.Gao,Liu Zongmin,and Chong Zhen reveal several causations,including the peasants' resistance to officials and landlords at the end of Ming,the corruption of Ming's authorities,the chaotic hierarchy and consequently,the collapse of Ming Dynasty.Meanwhile,the conflicts unfold with the ebb and flow of the peasant uprising the rapid expansion and then the fall of Li Zicheng's peasant troops.The major themes of the novel are clear,structures well-organized,figures various and vivid in many aspects,and the plot is fluctuating in a natural way,the language rich and colorful.It also intensifies ethnic features.Still it has several deficiencies like elevating and purifying the characters,and excessively concerning the classes of people,as a result of which overlooking their humanities.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the influence of the dissolution of the Comintern on the events in China, as well as to the activities of the Department of International Information (DII) formed instead of the Comintern under the Central Committee of the VKP(b). The self-dissolution of the Comintern was positively received by both political forces in China — the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang. This decision of the ECCI (Executive Committee of the Communist International) allowed Mao Zedong to secure a leading position in the party and isolate the Comintern in the Politburo from the CPC Central Committee. Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek took advantage of the disappearance of the "International Communist Headquarters" to discredit the CPC as a "foreign product" hostile to China. However, quite quickly, China found itself on the brink of civil war, threatening the collapse of the anti-Japanese national united front. Only the position of the USSR, the USA and the democratic forces in China did not allow Chiang Kai-shek to start a punitive campaign against the Special Region of China and the Communist Party. For more than two years, relations between the two parties remained extremely tense. G. Dimitrov, the actual head of the DII, had neither the authority nor the opportunity to somehow influence the political events in the neighboring country. The functions of his department were reduced mainly to the collection of information. Moreover, the main role in obtaining information was played by representatives of the Soviet special services located at the headquarters of the Central Committee of the CPC in Yan'an, as well as in Chongqing, the country's temporary capital, where the negotiations between the CPC and the Kuomintang took place. The defeat of Japan and the end of World War II changed the form and the possibilities of relations between the VKP(b) and the CPC.

Abstract:In Mainland China,the studies on history of Republican China (1912-1949) has been developing very fast within recent three decades,and became a relative independent subject with enormous research achievement.During three decades,the leading historical theory of studying on history of Republican China transferred mainly from the Historical Concept of Revolution to the Historical Concept of Nationalism and the Historical Concept of Modernization.With new fields are carved out and new materials are used in research,the studies of history of Republican China are showing more multiple and colorful in 21th Century.For its brighter future,the Chinese scholars should do their best to re-draw a clear line of research object's demarcation,to re-construct theory system,and to wide their cooperates with academic world abroad.

Abstract:The Communist Party of China (CPC) completed 100 years of its existence in July 2021, with the last 70 plus years spent as the ruling party in China. The centenary occasioned a fresh consideration by the CPC of the challenges to its identity, legitimacy and power. Using select speeches and commentaries produced by the CPC in the context of the centenary, this article analyses how the Party deploys discourses on its history to articulate its concerns and promote its interests today. It also looks at how these interpretations of the Party’s history and role in China translate into a growing sense of exceptionalism in the Party-state. The article argues that despite frequent calls to ‘seek truth from facts’, an overriding desire to retain power is once again pushing the CPC down the path towards dogmatism.

Abstract:The Red Star Over China written by Edgar Snow is the first book written by a foreign author to record the Red Army in the Soviet area. This book not only truthfully and objectively portrays the image of the communists during the Yan'an period through Snow's perspective as the other, but also serves as an effective medium for propagating the real Chinese Communist Party and its members from the other's viewpoint during the period of the Anti-Japanese War. From the perspective of others, Snow used the transformation of narrative perspectives and contrast to show the characteristics of CPC members in political ideology, military affairs, daily life, and other aspects, and creates a series of unique communists who are different from the old and other parties. Male CPC members are firm in faith and invincible in courage, female CPC members are as powerful as men, "red devils" have strong self-esteem and strong ability, and leaders are both wise and brave and empathic with their subordinates. Snow, because of his own unique characteristics and value judgment, creates an objective, real and vivid three-dimensional image from the perspective of the other.

Abstract:This article reviews the origins, development and current trends of what is known as ‘party literature work’ and the principal organisation that carries out this work—the Central Party Literature Office (CPLO). Party literature work plays a crucial role for each generation of Chinese communist leadership to assert its ideological ‘line’ and build its canon. It is an integral part of the ideological apparatus of the Communist Party of China. Under Xi Jinping, CPLO was merged into a new organisation, but party literature work remains and continues to play a key role, supporting his ideological line.

Abstract:This article is an intervention in some controversies concerning the role of the Communist International in and outside China. It seeks to tackle the inappropriate denial of its guidance and aid to the Chinese Revolution. In doing so, this paper makes several arguments. First, it argues that the Communist International provided the Chinese Revolution with valuable guidance, support and assistance. These contributed tremendously to the Communist Party of China's birth, development, consolidation and maturation and advanced its theoretical self-consciousness. Second, while the Communist International gave its guidance in the sincere hope that the Chinese Revolution would benefit from correct theories and advanced experiences, it absolutised the theoretical conceptions of the classical Marxists and the Russian experience. This led to mistakes or misjudgments that deserve an accurate evaluation. Third, the Communist International was itself conducting theoretical exploration, and was generally able to adjust its own theories and change its strategies. Fourth, for all the Communist International's guidance, the universal tenets of Marxism had to be integrated with the concrete practice of the Chinese Revolution, and it was the ability of Chinese communists to Sinicise Marxism–Leninism in what amounted to a theoretical revolution under Mao Zedong's leadership that accounts for the revolution's ultimate victory.
