Abstract:The construction of extensive tunnels in regions characterized by high geothermal activity presents significant challenges and inherent risks that affect both the safety and operational efficiency of construction personnel. This study investigated the factors influencing geothermal fields in shallow crustal rock formations through a comprehensive examination of existing literature and a detailed analysis of case studies. In addition, this study categorizes the geogenetic models of high-temperature heat hazards into three major classifications. Research findings indicate that several key factors significantly influence the geothermal fields. These factors, which include the deep geothermal background, heat transfer conditions, and localized additional heat sources, are paramount in shaping the geothermal field. Notably, it is observed that among these factors, the presence of additional heat sources, particularly the circulation of underground hot water, poses the most considerable threat to safety and operational efficiency. Moreover, this study utilizes a representative high geothermal tunnel in Southwest China to conduct a field investigation. This investigation assesses the potential for high-temperature thermal hazards within the tunnels, evaluates the geological conditions, verifies the factors governing the geothermal field, and outlines specific measures for the prevention and control of high geothermal tunnels. In conclusion, this study provides a structured analysis of lessons learned from these experiences, along with practical countermeasures for addressing high-temperature thermal hazards during the various stages of tunnel construction. The findings of this research serve as a valuable reference for those investigating the mechanisms behind geothermal disasters in tunnel construction. Furthermore, they offer practical guidance to ensure the secure and efficient excavation and sustainable operation of tunnels in the challenging geological environments characterized by high geothermal temperatures.

Abstract:Recently, an increasing number of tunnels were constructed in high-geotemperature regions and threatened with heat hazards, leading to an urgent required to analyze heat exchange characteristics and manage underground environment in these tunnels. To obtain the actual airflow and temperature field of high-temperature tunnel, a full coupled three-dimensional model incorporated with buoyancy flow was established describing the dynamic heat transfer process. The influence of buoyancy flow on temperature field in the radial and longitudinal direction of tunnel has been investigated respectively. Accounting for the buoyant effect is crucial to heat conduction and convection within tunnel, and it cannot be ignored in predicting air temperature with a large temperature difference tunnel. Additionally, this study highlights the significant effect of the presence and magnitude of groundwater flow on temperature variations and heat transfer of tunnel. When the magnitude of groundwater flow is larger than 0.01 m/d, the groundwater condition will significantly influence the temperature distribution of surrounding rock and airflow. The groundwater flow increases the temperature difference of tunnel and induces a clearer buoyancy effect inside the tunnel. As the groundwater flow direction angle increases from 0° to 90°, the influence of groundwater on heat transfer of tunnel increases first and then stabilizes. The longer the length of the seepage region is, the larger the average temperature at tunnel exit is, and the slower the temperature decreases with time. Furthermore, an orthogonal test was performed to investigate the influence degree of major factors on heat exchange of tunnel through range analysis. This study supplements the existing numerical model and research, making it more accurate to predict the thermal environment of tunnel, and guides optimization of tunnel design.

Genetic mechanism of high geotemperature in tunnels in consideration of temperature monitoring and hydrogeochemical analysis

Abstract:During the tunnel construction, high geotemperature is a recurrent phenomenon in geothermal anomalous zones, significantly affecting both human resources and equipment involved in the process. The current study takes the Nige tunnel, the tunnel with the highest known geotemperature in China, as a case study to analyze the underlying dynamics of this phenomenon. The geotemperature within the tunnel is monitored during excavation before delving into a detailed analysis of the basic characteristics of the high geotemperatures measured. Subsequently, an investigation is conducted into the hot springs in close proximity to the Nige tunnel, which serves to reveal potential heat sources contributing to the high geotemperature. To further reveal the hydrochemical and geothermal reservoir characteristics of the area surrounding the tunnel and hot spring, a water quality test is performed. Lastly, the study situates its findings regarding the geological genesis of high geotemperature within the context of investigating heat conduction channels. Results demonstrate the coexistence of high water temperature (Water T) and rock temperature (Rock T) in the Nige tunnel, with maximum temperatures recorded as 63.4 °C and 88.8 °C, respectively. This study concludes that the source of deep circulating hot water likely stems from infiltration and combination of atmospheric precipitation and shallow water from the continental environment. Additionally, the geotemperature within tunnels primarily stems from thermal anomalous bodies in the deep crust. The performances may be used as guidance to address similar issues that arise in regions with high geotemperature.

Abstract:It is crucial for financial providers, investment groups, resource developers and exploration companies to rate a new geothermal project in the respect of resource and reserve. The existing volumetric method is generally constrained by limited information when projects at the early stage of development. The objective of this study is to estimate the potential of a geothermal field by a refined geological model and 3D numerical temperature model. We establish a fine geological model of a geothermal field in South China and thereby calculate the conductive 3D numerical temperature model. Based on a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of borehole measured data and well-log data, the regional variation and spatial distribution of thermal and petrophysical properties are both incorporated in the geological model. The results show that the Neogene and Quaternary strata in the study area have an average porosity of 36% and an average rock thermal conductivity of 3.15 W (m K)−1, the Weizhou Formation have an average porosity of 29% and an average rock thermal conductivity of 2.54 W (m K)−1, the Liushagang Formation have an average porosity of 22 % and an average thermal conductivity of 2.21 W (m K)−1, the Changliu Formation have an average porosity of 13% and an average thermal conductivity of 2.75 W (m K)−1. Based on the fine geothermal geological model, the heat is assumed to be driven by conduction, and the results show that the bottom temperature of the Weizhou Formation in the hydrothermal sandstone reservoir is 96-168 degrees Celsius, and the high temperature area is concentrated near the down-thrown side of the fault, indicating that the geothermal resources are favorable area and the geothermal energy is 7.89 × 1014 J.

Abstract:Energy tunnel is attracting increasing attention because it provides an innovative and efficient approach to harvest geothermal energy. Most of the previous studies focused on its thermal performance and little attention was paid to the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour during the operation of energy tunnel, such as lining deformation and ground movement. To address this problem, a numerical model that can simulate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour was developed in this study and verified by a field test. Then, comprehensive parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of key soil properties and states (i.e. permeability, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and tunnel burial depth) on the mechanical responses of energy tunnel and surrounding soils under cooling. It is found that: (1) CTE and elastic modulus among the above parameters are the most influential parameters for ground settlement and normal stress from soil to lining, respectively; (2) The thermally induced change in normal stress highly depends on the burial depth, with a percentage change of 24% for a shallow tunnel and 5% for a deep tunnel. Based on the guidelines of tunnel management, the thermally induced ground settlement is a more critical aspect than the lining deformation.

Abstract:High-geothermal damage is one of the major challenges in high-speed railway tunnel construction. Current studies have shortcomings in the formation mechanism of tunnel environment and the environment evaluation system. This may lead to an over-optimal environmental acceptability evaluation and jeopardize tunnel construction safety. This study established a mathematical model of the tunnel environment formation mechanism, proposed the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) standard (26.49°C) for the tunnel construction, analysed the cooling efficiency of different environmental control measures. The results show that increasing the mechanical air supply volume can reduce tunnel temperature. Fog cannon can reduce the air temperature near the tunnel working face, the cooling range in front of the tunnel working face is 10.8 m. The cooling shield can control the WBGT below the standard. Under the 90°C rock temperature, the environmental acceptability of the tunnel under pure mechanical ventilation is 0%; the single fog cannon and double fog cannon (both cooperate with double-duct ventilation) are 22.85% and 54.29% respectively; the cooling shield with one fog cannon and double duct ventilation is 95.72%. This study improves the tunnel environment evaluation system during the construction stage, and provides design reference for temperature control measures in tunnel construction. Highlights:

Abstract:Fractured rock mass is extensively distributed in Karst topography regions, and its geological environment is different from that of the quaternary strata. In this study, the influences on geological environment induced by the construction and operation of a large-scale borehole group of ground source heat pumps are analyzed by a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling numerical model. It was found that groundwater is redirected as the boreholes can function as channels to the surface, and the flow velocity in the upstream of borehole group is higher than those downstream. This change in groundwater flow enhances heat transfer in the upstream boreholes but may disturb the original groundwater system and impact the local geological environment. Heat accumulation is more likely to occur downstream. The geo-stress concentration appears in the borehole area, mainly due to exaction and increasing with the depth. On the fracture plane, tensile stress and maximum shear stress simultaneously occur on the upstream of boreholes, inducing the possibility of fracturing or the expansion of existing fractures. There is a slight uplift displacement on the surface after the construction of boreholes. The correlations of the above THM phenomena are discussed and analyzed. From the modeling results, it is suggested that the consolidation of backfills can minimize the environmental disturbances in terms of groundwater redirection, thermal accumulation, occurrence of tensile stress, and possible fracturing. This study provides support for the assessment of impacts on geological environments resulting from shallow geothermal development and layout optimization of ground heat exchangers in engineering practices.

Abstract:Mid-deep geothermal reinjection technology is crucial for the sustainable development of geothermal resources, which has garnered significant attention and rapid growth in recent years. Currently, various geothermal reinjection technologies lag behind, lacking effective integration to address issues like low reinjection rates and thermal breakthrough. This paper reviews the basic principles and development history of mid-deep geothermal reinjection technology, focusing on various technical methods used in the process and analyzing their applicability, advantages, and disadvantages under different geological conditions. It highlights the unique challenges posed by deep geothermal resources, including high temperature, high pressure, high stress, chemical corrosion, and complex geological structures. Additionally, it addresses challenges in equipment selection and durability, system stability and operation safety, environmental impact, and sustainable development. Finally, the paper explores future directions for mid-deep geothermal reinjection technology, highlighting key areas for further research and potential pathways for technological innovation. Abstract:Under the influence of plate collision, the high geothermal is a widespread phenomenon within the region of Tibet. Due to the aforementioned high geothermal, lining cracking is a common disaster in Sangzhuling tunnel during construction period. This paper presented the mechanical behaviour of tunnel lining under high geothermal temperature, which is studied by thermo-mechanical numerical method. The results both from field investigation and numerical analysis demonstrate that high geothermal temperature can cause the tunnel lining cracking and the variation of the stress of the tunnel lining. Thus, a novelty sandwich composite lining supporting scheme is proposed to overcome such geothermal temperature effects, in which a thermal insulation layer between primary supporting and secondary supporting is designed. The numerical analysis results indicate that the insulation layer can significantly improve the mechanical characteristics of the lining structure. In addition, the effect of the insulation layer is not linear with its thickness. For this reason, the optimum insulation thickness of the insulation layer is chosen as 0.06 m, which was optimized by a numerical parametric analysis. The research can provide a reliable reference for tunnelling works in high geothermal regions.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the study of the evolutionary mechanism governing the temperature field of geothermal reservoir under low-temperature tailwater reinjection conditions, which is crucial for the sustainable geothermal energy management. With advancing exploitation of geothermal resources deepens, precise understanding of this mechanism becomes paramount for devising effective reinjection strategies, optimizing reservoir utilization, and bolstering the economic viability of geothermal energy development. The article presents a comprehensive review of temperature field evolution across diverse heterogeneous thermal reservoirs under low-temperature tailwater reinjection conditions, and analyzes key factors influencing this evolution. It evaluates existing research methods, highlighting their strengths and limitations. The study identifies gaps in the application of rock seepage and heat transfer theories on a large scale, alongside the need for enhanced accuracy in field test results, particularly regarding computational efficiency of fractured thermal reservoir models under multi-well reinjection conditions. To address these shortcomings, the study proposes conducting large-scale rock seepage and heat transfer experiments, coupled with multi-tracer techniques for field testing, aimed at optimizing fractured thermal reservoir models' computational efficiency under multi-well reinjection conditions. Additionally, it suggests integrating deep learning methods into research endeavors. These initiatives are of significance in deepening the understanding of the evolution process of the temperature field in deep thermal reservoirs and enhancing the sustainability of deep geothermal resource development.
Detailed thermal environment classification of high geothermal tunnel based on thermal comfort indices

Abstract:High temperature and high humidity in geothermal tunnels pose significant risks to the well-being of construction workers. This study aims to establish critical environmental thresholds to protect workers in these challenging conditions. Field tests were conducted in a high geothermal tunnel in southwest China, continuous measuring parameters such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), skin temperature, and heart rate. The collected data were analyzed, leading to the development of a nonlinear programming mathematical model. This model enabled a systematic classification of the tunnel's environmental conditions and the calculation of threshold values for various environmental parameters. Furthermore, critical thresholds for heat stress indicators such as the discomfort index (DI), heat index (HI), and relative strain index (RSI) were determined. The study categorized the tunnel's hot and humid environment into five distinct zones: comfortable zone, general comfortable zone, safety zone, heat tolerance zone, and danger zone. The findings indicate that in this geothermal tunnel, the comfort zone thresholds are 26 °C for dry bulb temperature, 30 % for relative humidity, and 20 °C for the WBGT index. The safety zone thresholds are 37 °C, 64 %, and 32 °C, while the danger zone thresholds are 43 °C, 81 %, and 40 °C, respectively. For heat stress indices, the safety thresholds for DI, HI, and RSI are 25.42 °C, 26.31 °C, and 0.28, while the danger thresholds are 28.59 °C, 35.30 °C, and 0.38, respectively. This research provides essential insights for safeguarding the health of construction workers operating in high geothermal tunnel environments.

Abstract:Geothermal energy will become an important part of energy in the future because of its advantages in source stability, sustainability, and potential high utilization ratio. In particular, the development and utilization of deep geothermal energy from HDR have gradually attracted people’s attention. Aiming at solution to the bottleneck of EGS-D, a new EGS-E based on excavation technology is proposed. In this paper, a concise and direct method for estimating the early performance of this disruptive and innovative geothermal development scheme is established as a viable alternative to supercomputing for the subsequent quantitative research of the corresponding relationship between a typical deep engineering structure and its heat extraction efficiency. Firstly, the effects of the fixed temperature at a tunnel wall, the radius of a tunnel, and the rock type on the annual heat extraction rate of the tunnel are studied based on the analytical solution of a one-dimensional radial plane problem of the transient heat conduction through high-temperature surrounding rock to the tunnel wall covering 30 years. Then, three different estimation methods of EGS-E efficiency with comb-shaped and chessboard-shaped underground tunnels, respectively, are studied, and the research ideas for the estimation of the EGS-E system with more complicated cobweb-shaped tunnels are pointed out.

Numerical Study on Damage Zones Induced by Excavation and Ventilation in a High-Temperature Tunnel at Depth

Abstract:Geothermal power is being regarded as depending on techniques derived from hydrocarbon production in worldwide current strategy. However, it has artificially been developed far less than its natural potentials due to technical restrictions. This paper introduces the Enhanced Geothermal System based on Excavation (EGS-E), which is an innovative scheme of geothermal energy extraction. Then, based on cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening model (CWFS) and literature investigation of granite test at high temperature, the initiation, propagation of excavation damaged zones (EDZs) under unloading and the EDZs scale in EGS-E closed to hydrostatic pressure state is studied. Finally, we have a discussion about the further evolution of surrounding rock stress and EDZs during ventilation is studied by thermal-mechanical coupling. The results show that the influence of high temperature damage on the mechanical parameters of granite should be considered; Lateral pressure coefficient affects the fracture morphology and scale of tunnel surrounding rock, and EDZs area is larger when the lateral pressure coefficient is 1.0 or 1.2; Ventilation of high temperature and high in-situ stress tunnel have a significant effect on the EDZs scale; Additional tensile stress is generated in the shallow of tunnel surrounding rock, and the compressive stress concentration transfers to the deep. EDZs experiences three expansion stages of slow, rapid and deceleration with cooling time, and the thermal insulation layer prolongs the slow growth stage.

A global review of deep geothermal energy exploration: from a view of rock mechanics and engineering

Abstract:Deep geothermal energy exploitation has gained a lot of attentions in energy field due to its large reserve. Enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is the only one mode to explore hot dry rock (HDR) with real engineering practice throughout the world. To date, it is also a topic facing several key issues among sustainable and renewable energies because no commercialized mode has been made. Rock plays an important role in deep geothermal energy exploitation because it is not only a carrier of heat energy but also provides artificial paths for heat exchange after stimulation. There are some practices and researches about rock drilling, stimulation and stability of fractures in deep geothermal engineering. This paper collected the results of the previous deep geothermal exploitation researches that relate to rock mechanics and engineering and summarized the experiences and lessons of deep geothermal energy exploitation from literatures. Some new thoughts like the mode based on EGS and pipe were also collected. Finally, the knowledge about deep geothermal energy exploitation has been derived. Despite of many works on HDR, some key issues still face challenges and need breakthrough. Therefore, deficiencies and prospection in future research were pointed out. The review results showed that the evolution and mechanism of HDR such as weathering, damage, cracking, failure and stability under multi-field coupling with the interaction of fluid is an important issue to be further studied and addressed.

Abstract:Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) store unstable and non-continuous energy underground, releasing stable heat energy on demand. This effectively improve energy utilization and optimize energy allocation. As UTES technology advances, accommodating greater depth, higher temperature and multi-energy complementarity, new research challenges emerge. This paper comprehensively provides a systematic summary of the current research status of UTES. It categorized different types of UTES systems, analyzes the applicability of key technologies of UTES, and evaluate their economic and environmental benefits. Moreover, this paper identifies existing issues with UTES, such as injection blockage, wellbore scaling and corrosion, seepage and heat transfer in cracks, etc. It suggests deepening the research on blockage formation mechanism and plugging prevention technology, improving the study of anticorrosive materials and water treatment technology, and enhancing the investigation of reservoir fracture network characterization technology and seepage heat transfer. These recommendations serve as valuable references for promoting the high-quality development of UTES.
The Study and Application of the Relationship Between the Geothermal Field and the Deep Uranium Ore Deposit

Abstract:Based on the principle of geothermy,this paper studied the relationship between the geothermal field and the deep uranium ore deposit in such aspects as the enrichment of radioactive elements,the numerical simulation of the heat production of uranium ore deposit and the uranium information identification from geothermal data.Some experiments were conducted in Zoige area by using the thermal infrared remote-sensing method.The results show that the message of deep uranium ore deposit is closely related to the geothermal distribution,and the geothermal data can be used in search for deep uranium ore deposits.
Cooling effect and parameter analysis of applying heat insulation layer to tunnel regionalization in construction period based on geothermal level

Abstract:The construction of high geothermal tunnels presents significant difficulties due to the abnormal rock temperature gradients, including designing a reasonable and cost-effective insulation layer as well as effective cooling measures. In this study, the rock temperature distribution, environmental temperature, and lining surface temperature of the tunnel during the construction period were analyzed through field surveys. A numerical simulation model considering ventilation and heat transfer dynamics was established based on the geothermal measurements and construction characteristics of this tunnel. After validating the 3D numerical model, the effects of installing heat insulation layers according to geothermal levels on the tunnel temperature field control were investigated. Additionally, the impacts of different insulation layer thermal conductivities ( λ i ), ventilation air volume ( W a ), and duct thermal conductivities ( λ d ) were analyzed. The results indicate: (1) The comparison of temperature fields in tunnels with insulation layers, which is applied in the range of the rock temperature above 50 °C and without insulation layers was made. The temperature near the excavation face ( T Am-1 ) decreases by up to 0.3 % (0.5 °C), tunnel environment temperature with insulation layer applied ( T Am-2 ) decreases by up to 4.2 % (2.1 °C), the secondary lining temperature ( T Sec-lining ) decreases by up to 10.5 % (4.6 °C), and the wind temperature of air duct outlet ( T Air-duct ) decreases by up to 0.7 % (0.5 °C). (2) The length of the insulation layer increases to the full length of the tunnel, T Am-1 continues to decline by only 0.4 °C, T Am-2 by 0.5 °C, T Sec-lining by 0.9 °C, and T Air-duct by 0.1 °C, which shows that it is the most economical and reasonable to apply the insulation layer only in the tunnel area where the rock temperature is higher than 50 °C. (3) As λ i increases, both the tunnel environment and secondary lining temperatures exhibit linear increases, while increasing W a and λ i cause quadratic decreases and increases in tunnel temperature field parameters, respectively. (4) Range analysis of orthogonal experiments reveals that for tunnel temperature field impact level. For T Am-1 , the significance order is W a > λ d > λ i . And for T Am-2 and T Sec-lining , the significance order is W a > λ i > λ d , which can provide the more economical scheme for the insulation layer design and cooling schemes in the high ground temperature tunnel.

Abstract:Underground traffic tunnels serve as the entry and exit buildings for underground spaces. Most of the ventilation and air-conditioning systems in underground spaces rely on traffic tunnels for cooling or preheating to save energy. The temperature distribution of traffic tunnels has always attracted the attention of researchers. In this study, a heat transfer model of a traffic tunnel was established based on energy conservation and boundary layer theory, and the field test was carried out. The calculation model provided in this study was in good agreement with the field measurement results. It is found that the dimensionless air temperature of the traffic tunnel decays exponentially along the tunnel at the same time. The air temperature in the traffic tunnel fluctuates with time, and the simple harmonic fluctuation decreases along the tunnel. In summer, the air temperature decreases and increases exponentially along the tunnel during the day and night, respectively. In this study, a heat transfer model for calculating the temperature distribution of underground traffic tunnels was theoretically established, which provided an important theoretical support for underground traffic tunnels as natural air conditioners. The establishment of heat transfer model of underground traffic tunnel has significant economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Long-term freeze–thaw cycles have a significant impact on the safety and durability of tunnels located in cold regions. In this study, a hydro-thermal–mechanical coupling model and calculation method were developed based on the Guanjiaoshan Tunnel. The model's precision and rationality underwent comprehensive validation. The study aimed to discuss the temporal and spatial distributions of temperature, water, and mechanical fields under long-term freeze–thaw cycles. The findings revealed that the water migration influence zones can be classified into three distinct zones. The ice-water phase change and stress exhibit periodic fluctuations following an annual cycle. Significantly, the lining's stress, or danger level, exhibited two peaks during the autumn and spring seasons. The magnitude of the autumn peak exceeded that of the spring peak. Throughout the initial 12-year period, the tunnel's danger level consistently remained below the threshold value of 1.0, affirming its adherence to safety standards during its early service period. Furthermore, the construction of tunnels has the potential to contribute to frozen soils expansion in specific zones due to prolonged freeze–thaw cycles. These study results not only enhance our understanding of hydro-thermal variations but also provide valuable insights for predicting the long-term security performance of tunnels in cold regions.
