Abstract:The research present situation and mechanism of bioleaching of cobaltiferous sulfide ores are introduced.Experiments on bioleaching of cobalt from a low-grade cobalt ore using thiobacillus ferrooxidans was performed.Leaching rate of cobalt was 55%~60% under the conditions of slurry density of less than 20% and leaching times of 10 days.

Abstract:The cobaltiferous ores were studied by the process mineralogy for their main composition, ore particle size distribution, contents of primary elements and mineral dissemination characteristics. The results showed that the main content of the sulfide ores was carrollite that most of them were in monomer form, while a part of them were intergrowth with other ores. The copper ores were composed of chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, covellite. The ferric sulfide is pyrite primarily. The cobaltiferous ores were comprised of 1.63% cobalt, 1.05% copper, 15.00% sulfur and 12.4% iron. Shaking flask experiments were used to test the leaching efficiency of the cobaltiferous ores using ZY101 bacteria which was cultured with good anti-cobalt properties in the lab. The results showed that the cobalt bioleaching efficiency by bioleaching was 85.71% which was 63.26% higher than that by chemical leaching with high iron solution. So it was more suitable that recovery of cobalt by bioleaching than by chemical leaching, and ZY101 was favored for cobalt leaching because of its high leaching efficiency and cobalt tolerance.

Abstract:The copper-cobalt ore received from Congo contains around 2.0% copper and 0.356% cobalt, with oxidation rates of 92.09% and 88.57% for Cu and Co, respectively. Malachite and cornetite are the main copper minerals, while heterogenite and carrollite are the main Co-bearing minerals. To optimize the leaching efficiency of Cu and Co for this type of ore, various operating parameters were investigated, including particle size, pulp density, acidity, leaching time, and reductant. The recovery for Cu and Co can reach 88.36% and 74.58% under pulp density of 33%, acidity of 84 kg/t, leaching time of 4 h, and reductant 12 kg/t. In order to improve the metal recovery, an intensified operating condition (fine grinding, high acidity, and reductant) was applied, and the copper and Co recovery reached 93.07% and 89.56%, respectively.

Abstract:This study is a continuation of previous work designed to further explore the mechanism of the bioleaching of sulfide concentrate at neutral pH by heterotrophic bacteria Bacillus megaterium QM B1551. The concentrate contained 13.2 percent nickel (Ni) and 0.2 percent cobalt (Co), which presented primarily as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Contact and noncontact bioleaching experiments were conducted with finely ground ore at an initial pH of 6, resulting in 44.7 percent of Ni and 38.2 percent of Co leached in the contact-bioleaching treatment. Oxidation experiments of sulfur, thiosulfate (S2O32−) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) by cell membrane were performed to verify whether sulfur transferase, thiosulfate quinone reductase and enzyme cytochrome B558 on the surface of the bacteria could be expressed to oxidize the sulfide. The results show that thiosulfate quinone reductase and cytochrome B558 could be expressed to oxidize S2O32− and Fe2+ to SO42− and Fe3+, respectively.

Abstract:Pressure leaching is a promising technology to process the copper-cobalt sulfide ore owing to its flexibility, short process flow, higher leaching rate, comprehensive recovery of valuable metals. Copper-cobalt sulfide flotation concentrates received from Congo were mainly composed by chalcopyrite, bornite, carrollite and linnaeite with the contents of 23 % copper, 6.4 % cobalt as well as 15.3 % iron. In this work, the behaviors of copper and cobalt during pressure leaching were investigated for varying temperature, acidity, leaching time, solid to liquid ratio, and oxygen partial pressure. The leaching efficiency for copper and cobalt can reach 99% and 98% under optimal condition of temperature 190 ℃, oxygen partial pressure 6 atm, leaching time 2 h, liquid to solid ratio 5:1, initial acidity 0 g/L. The kinetic study shows that the chemical reaction is the control step during pressure leaching of copper and cobalt. The higher apparent activation energy of copper than cobalt confirms that the copper leaching is slower than that of cobalt. During pressure leaching, sulfur was directly oxidized into sulfate and high-valent iron ions are generated and partially oxidized into metal sulfides. The hematite encapsulation is the main reason for the incomplete leaching of copper and cobalt.

Abstract:The distribution of the metal-bearing mineral grains within a particulate ore prepared for leaching, and the impact of this spatial heterogeneity on overall extraction efficiency is of key importance to a mining industry that must continuously target ever-reducing grades and more complex ore bodies. If accessibility and recovery of the target minerals is to be improved, a more detailed understanding of the behaviour of the system must be developed. We present an in situ analysis using X-ray computed tomography to quantify the rates of volume reduction of sulfide mineral grains in low grade agglomerated copper bearing ores during a miniature laboratory scale column leaching experiment. The data shows the scale of the heterogeneity in the leaching behaviour, with an overall reduction of sulphide mineral grains of 50%, but that this value masks significant mm(3) to cm(3) scale variability in reduction. On the scale of individual ore fragments, leaching efficiency ranged from 22% to 99%. We use novel quantitative methods to determine the volume fraction of the sulfide that is accessible to the leachate solution.
Bacterial Leaching of Discarded Copper Ores from Yongping, China

Abstract:The elementary and phase analysis of discarded copper ores from Yongping of China has been performed. The experiments of extracting copper from the discarded copper ores were done with the mixed bacteria obtained through a series of enrichment, separation, domestication and combination tests. The results show that in the process of bioleaching, the pH value rises at first and drops gradually. The E-h value keeps rising along with the time and the appropriate E-h value varying between 750 and 800 mV will benefit the bioleaching copper. The high concentration of ferric ions is detrimental to the bioleaching copper. The results of bioleaching copper are good. That is, the copper recovery is 31.8% after 27 days.

Abstract:To recover and utilize the low-grade primary copper sulfide ore resource in the waste ore in Yongping Copper Mine,the effect of inoculation concentration,initial Fe~(2+) concentration,ore particle size and pulp density on its bioleaching was studied.The results show that the conditions beneficial to the copper leaching include inoculation concentration of 20%,initial Fe~(2+) concentration of 0 g/L,initial pH value of 1.2,controlling the pH value in the leaching process to be under 1.50,ore particle size of 5 mm and pulp density of 20%~25%.Too high a ferric concentration and the iron precipitation in the solution will directly affect the bioleaching effect.Though the leaching bacteria can well adapt to the ore leaching environment,measures for strengthening the leaching should be taken due to the slow leaching speed and rate of copper.

Abstract:The recovery of metals from spent LiCoO2 batteries (SLBs) is essential to avoid resource wastage and the production of hazardous waste. However, the major challenge in regard to recovering metals from SLBs using traditional bioleaching is the low Co yield. To overcome this issue, a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus caldus and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans was designed for use in SLBs leaching in this study. With the assistance of Fe2+ as a reductant, 99% of Co and 100% of Li were leached using the above mixed-culture bioleaching (MCB) process, thus solving the problem of low metal leaching efficiency from SLBs. Analysis of the underlying mechanism revealed that the effective extraction of metals from SLBs by the Fe2+-MCB process relied on Fe2+-releasing electrons to reduce refractory Co(III) to Co(II) that can be easily bioleached. Finally, the hazardous SLBs was transformed into a non-toxic material after treatment utilizing the Fe2+-MCB process. However, effective SLBs leaching was not achieved by the addition of Fe0 to the MCB system. Only 25% Co and 31% Li yields were obtained, as the addition of Fe0 caused acid consumption and bacterial apoptosis. Overall, this study revealed that reductants that cause acid consumption and harm bacteria should be ruled out for use in reductant-assisted bioleaching processes for extracting metals from SLBs.

Abstract:How to recycle metals from the waste resources becomes a hotspot all around the world. Non-ferrous residues, which was produced by non-ferrous melting industry, and various of Cu and Co compounds exist in the residues in the form of CuxOy, CuxSy, CoxSy. In order to efficiently extract valuable metals from the non-ferrous residues, this study investigated the bioleaching behavior of Cu and Co from non-ferrous residues, using iron-oxidizing bacteria (IOB, Leptospirillum ferriphilum CS13) and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB, Acidithiobacillus caldus S2) by controlling the microbial composition, initial pH, and initial ferrous ion concentration. The results showed that IOB had a better performance on extracting Cu and Co than that of SOB, especially for Cu. Furthermore, 77.7 and 79.8% of Cu and Co were extracted under the optimal ratio of the initial number of IOB and SOB (1:1) after bioleaching, which was more than that when bioleaching by any one of these two kinds of bacteria. However, the changes of initial pH and ferrous ion concentration could not significantly enhance bioleaching performance. The results indicated that bioleaching had a good performance on recovering of metals from non-ferrous residues and excellent application prospect for the cleaner resource recycling.

Abstract:The mechanism of sulfide copper ore bio-oxidation and the characteristics of underground solution leaching were discussed. Three kinds of copper sulfide ore sample were used to conduct a comparison test on weak sulfuric acid leaching and sulfuric acid-ferric leaching(ferric in the form of chemical compound and produced by oxidation using T ferrooxidans),The test results show that the extraction of copper was increased by 756%,21.62%,10.59% according to reserves of copper sulfide ore is 15.02%,45.60%,79.35% respectively with addition of ferric 2.0～3.0g/L.Extraction of iron was 10.68%,8.9%,7.12% with addition of ferric 0.0,1.0,3.0g/L respectively.Base on the experiment,leaching process enhanced by biooxidation has been developed and become easy to be performed in engineering practice for recovering the copper from sulfide ore.

Abstract:An experimental study on a high Ca-Mg contents and sulphide-oxide mixed copper-cobalt ore in Congo (Kinshasa) has been conducted ,and the study compared with technology and economy of three different process methods :leach raw ore directly ,sulphide flotation-oxide flotation (no cleaning )-leaching , sulphide flotation-oxide flotation (cleaning )-leaching .Results show that :copper and cobalt recoveries of second process method is highest ,but the third process method have the best economic benefits .In addition , magnetic separation of flotation tailings can add 7.15 percentage points to total cobalt recovery of beneficiation .

Abstract:Bioleaching of sulfide minerals at neutral pH has been rarely reported. In this study, a bacterium, Bacillus megaterium QM B1551, was isolated from Jinchuan sulfide tailings and used to leach a complex sulfide flotation concentrate for the extraction of Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ at near neutral pH. A total of 38.2% Co, 44.7% Ni and 3.6% Cu were extracted from the sulfide concentrate in 5 days with an initial pH of 6. An enhanced Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ extraction extent was achieved by first bioleaching the concentrate with Bacillus megaterium QM B1551 at 35 degrees C and then followed by chemical leaching with 4 M sulfuric acid at 90 degrees C. As a result, a total of 60.7% Co2+, 76.3% Ni2+ and 39.8% Cu2+ were extracted. On an industrial scale, the profits from the metal recovery by such a combined leaching procedure are optimum if considering the cost-benefit ratio.

Abstract:Series of bioleaching experiments were performed in small flasks to determine the effects of substrate (Fe2+ from ferrite or FeSO4·7H2O and elemental sulfur) and concentration on the release of metals (Cu and Zn) from a dewatered digested municipal sludge. The profiles of pH, Fe2+ and SO2-4, and heavy metal removal of the leaching experiments were obtained to illustrate the progress of the leaching process and the various effects. The pH was lowered and that the metals were released by actions of Thiobacillus contained in the sludge sample; pH was lowered to 2.1 in the S system and to 2.6 in the ferrite system. Ferrite was a more effective substrate for bioleaching of the metals from the sludge; 29.1% of Cu and 36.8% of Zn were removed from the sludge using the best dose of Fe2+ as substrate (25 g/L of FeSO4·7H2O) compared with 18.8% of Cu and 34.8% of Zn removed using the best S substrate (6 g/L).
Bioleaching of a low-grade nickel-copper sulfide by mixture of four thermophiles

Abstract:This study investigated thermophilic bioleaching of a low grade nickel-copper sulfide using mixture of four acidophilic thermophiles. Effects of 0.2g/L l-cysteine on the bioleaching process were further evaluated. It aimed at offering new alternatives for enhancing metal recoveries from nickel-copper sulfide. Results showed a recovery of 80.4% nickel and 68.2% copper in 16-day bioleaching without l-cysteine; while 83.7% nickel and 81.4% copper were recovered in the presence of l-cysteine. Moreover, nickel recovery was always higher than copper recovery. l-Cysteine was found contributing to lower pH value, faster microbial growth, higher Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP), higher zeta potential and absorbing on the sulfide surfaces through amino, carboxyl and sulfhydryl groups. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns of leached residues showed generation of S, jarosite and ammoniojarosite. Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) results revealed that l-cysteine could have variant impacts on different microorganisms and changed the microbial community composition dramatically during nickel-copper sulfide bioleaching.

Abstract:The catalytic effect of activated carbon on cobalt mineral bioleaching was studied. The results show that, with the presence of activated carbon, the carrollite dissolution rate accelerates and the cobalt recovery rate increases, which attributes to the galvanic interaction between the activated carbon and carrollite. When 1.0 g/L activated carbon and 20 g cobalt ore are added in the Erlenmeyer flasks that are incubated in a rotary shaker at 180 r/min and constant temperature at 45℃, the leaching rate of cobalt increases by approximately 22%, and the copper leaching rate improves by 15.43%. The catalytic effect of activated carbon particles is the same with that of powder on carrollite bioleaching. Therefore, it is feasible that, using activated carbon grain can improve the cobalt recovery, instead of powder. The adsorption of Co2+ by activated carbon is affected by pulp pH. With dropping pH, the adsorption capacity of Co2+ by activated carbon reduces.

Abstract:Bioleaching has been widely applied to recover metals from sulfide minerals at medium or high temperatures, however, little is known about the bioleaching at low temperature. Electrochemical analysis techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), combined with surface detection methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), applied to study the electrochemical behavior of chalcopyrite during bioleaching at 6 °C. Chalcopyrite bioleaching experiments demonstrated that the maximum cell density could achieve 5.3 × 108 cells/mL. Copper extraction by Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans could reach 1.92 g/L, which is better than the 0.67 g/L of sterile experiment. CV tests found that as the leaching time passed, the anodic and cathodic current signals decreased and the anodic peak moved gradually from low potential to high potential. The increase of corrosion potential and the decrease of corrosion current in potentiodynamic polarization proved the passivation on the surface of the chalcopyrite. EIS results showed that ion exchange resistance increased from 306.1 Ω to 1913.0 Ω, which is larger than the passivation film impedance originated from elemental sulfur and polysulfide on the mineral surface. It suggested that the impedance of chalcopyrite electrode at low temperature is mainly due to ion exchange impedance but not passivation layer, which is different from the bioleaching at normal or high temperature.

Abstract:The effect of ore size and slurry density on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite ore in shake flask and the oxidation activity of bacteria and its effect on leaching ore are studied.The results show that the beneficial conditions of ore size and slurry density on leaching copper are 5 mm and 20%～25% respectively in the course of bioleaching chalcopyrite ore.The high ferric concentration or the producted precipitation of iron directly affects the oxidation activity of bacteria and its effect on leaching.

Abstract:Copper and cobalt were leached from heterogenite in sulfuric acid using Na2SO3 as reducing agent,and the influences of the type and amount of reducing agent,leaching temperature,acid concentration,etc on leaching rates of copper and cobalt were investigated through single-factor experiments.The results show that the optimal conditions,at which the leaching efficiencies of copper and cobalt were 99.06% and 98.87%,were as follows: the dosage of Na2SO3 is 10% of the mass of heterogenite,and c(H2SO4)=3 mol/L,T=60 ℃,L/S ratio=2:1,t=60 min.The proposed flowsheet is Cu recovery by M5640→Fe removal by jarosite→Al removal by Na2CO3→Ca,Mg removal by NaF→evaporative crystallization valuable.This process flow can be applied in the extraction of metals from heterogenite and similar materials effectively in industry.
Role of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in bioleaching of copper

Abstract:Copper leaching in the presence and absence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans(A.f) cultivated from coal mine water are carried out,in 3 leaching solutions: 9 K substrate(S),the solution without bacteria(FS) and the solution with bacteria(MS).The experimental results show that:(1) copper leached in all three solutions,and the concentrations of leached copper in different solutions increases by the order: S,FS,and MS,which are 4 433 mg/L,5 377 mg/L,6 296 mg/L,respectively;(2) in the initial stage of the experiments,the copper leaching rate is the fastest in MS,followed by the solution without bacteria then by substrate(FS),and after leaching for 24 h,the leaching rates approach the same in all three solutions;(3) the changes of pH and Eh in the three solutions are similar.The pH values increase from 2.5 to 3.4 then maintain relatively steady;and the Eh values maintain relatively steady after decreasing sharply to 280 mV.The study shows that indirect bioleaching took the dominant place in the leaching of copper and the dissolved oxygen(DO) effect on copper leaching in solution MS could not be ignored.
