Abstract:Surfactants and builders are the two most important ingredients in laundry, household and personal-care cleaning products. They play a key role in washing processes. The development of various surfactants (e.g., anionic, nonionic, cationic, zwitterionic, and silicone surfactants) and builders (inorganic, organic and polymeric builders) used in the detergent compositions are reviewed and their detergency performance and biodegradability are discussed. In the future, the development of the surfactants and builders used in detergent compositions should be based on economic and environmental considerations. The use of the eco-friendly surfactants and builders derived from inexpensive renewable resources (e.g., alkyl polyglucosides and bio-based polyesters) in detergent compositions is the developing trends in detergent industry.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, we have investigated the washing performance of sodium oxalate-based detergents containing different enzymes (protease, lipase and cellulase). The results show that sodium oxalate-based detergents with enzymes have a better washing performance than formulations containing the conventional builder STPP and zeolite 4A. For sodium oxalate-based with protease, the amount of sodium oxalate and protease have a significant effect on the detergency. Lipase can improve detergency of sodium oxalate-based detergents after “first washing” in the presence of different anionic surfactant (LAS, MES and AES). For cellulase, only sodium oxalate in the presence of LAS has a detergency increase.

Abstract:Abstract The application of phosphate compounds as a builder in a detergent formulation created eutrophication that encouraged industry to produce more eco-friendly detergents. To overcome that problem, phosphate can be substituted by zeolit that is more effective in cleaning and also biodegradable. In this study, zeolite was synthesized from rice husk ash using a melting method followed by hydrothermal processes. Effervescent detergent tablets were prepared with the following formulations: 3 formulations containing zeolite (F1–F3), 3 formulations containing sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP: P1–P3) and 1 control formulation. The synthesized zeolit was analysed by XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Furthermore, all detergent formulas were characterized for flowability, compressibility, compatibility, disintegration time, pH, cleaning action and biodegradability. The results of FTIR, XRD and SEM characterization showed that the synthesized zeolite was an amorphous type-A crystal and the predominance of the amorphous phase with a cubic structure and CEC value of 95.71 cmol (+) kg −1 . In this study the formulation F1 with 15-% zeolite was found to be the best formulation with granule flow rate parameters of 13.6 g/s, stationary angle of 22.0°, compressibility of 16.6-%, detergent tablet hardness accounted to 0.81 kgf/cm 2 , crushed time of tablet detergent of 1.5 min, pH 6.7, and biodegradability value of 70.3-% in BOD 5 test. A higher concentration of zeolite provided a better cleaning effect of the detergent tablets.

Abstract:Overbased calcium sulfonate is one of the largest commercially produced nanomaterials; the phase transformation mechanism involved in the key process of carbonation reaction for overbased detergent preparation has not yet been fully understood. Following our previous investigation based on the heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (HABS) surfactant of industrial byproduct, two commercial products with well-defined chemical compositions and structures, long-chain alkylbenzene sulfonate (LCABS) and comparative short-chain linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (SLABS), are employed in this study as model surfactants for further mechanism study of this pivotal process by the combination of analytical techniques such as potentiometric titration, DLS, TEM, FTIR, and XRD. It has been demonstrated that amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a prerequisite for the preserving and stabilization of the alkaline reserve, especially under thermal work environment. The phase transformation from ACC to crystalline vaterite polymorph rather than calcite has been unambiguously confirmed as a universal mechanism for all the alkylbenzene sulfonate based systems. Furthermore, the length and number of alkyl tails of alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants exhibit a strong influence on characteristics of detergent products. The LCABS with long-chain alkyl substituents or HABS with dialkyl substituents plays an important role not only in inhibiting the agglomeration process, but also in protecting the metastable inorganic cores from fusion to avoid phase transformation. Such understanding should be of crucial importance for guiding the preparation of overbased detergents and greases. In addition, the study on the influence of the molar ratio of calcium oxide in the total alkaline calcium salts and the dosage of surfactant LCABS, promoter methanol, and catalyst anhydrous calcium chloride help to determine the suitable work window for detergent production, and moreover, the water content provides a handle for better understanding the reaction process and achieving good quality control for detergent manufacturing.
A Novel Method for Purification of Low Grade Diatomite Powders in Centrifugal Fields

Abstract:This study presented a novel method for purification of three different grades of diatomite from China by scrubbing technique using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as dispersant combined with centrifugation. Effects of pH value and dispersant amount on the grade of purified diatomite were studied and the optimum experimental conditions were obtained. The characterizations of original diatomite and derived products after purification were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and specific surface area analyzer (BET). The results indicated that the pore size distribution, impurity content and bulk density of purified diatomite were improved significantly. The dispersive effect of pH and SHMP on the separation of diatomite from clay minerals was discussed systematically through zeta potential test. Additionally, a possible purification mechanism was proposed in the light of the obtained experimental results.

Abstract:Sodium lignosulfonate (LS) was modified by polypropylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PPGDE) for the preparation of a surfactant (GLS), and firstly used for detergent builder. The effects of PPGDE content on the reaction and the properties of GLS were investigated. The structure of GLS was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), emulsifying ability, lime soap dispersing power (LSDP), and detergency were characterized. The results showed that GLS had higher surface activity and better emulsifying ability, LSDP, and detergency than that of LS. After decolorized by H2O2, the whiteness retention value of decolorized LS on white cloth reached 91.9%, while that of decolorized GLS increased up to 99.4%. These results suggested that the decolorized GLS may provide a new perspective for detergent builders.

Abstract:Under an increasing social demand for improving the so-called eutrophication problems in stagnant surface waters, the development of non-phosphated powder detergent is just initiated in our country. Zeolite 4A is the main substitute builders for STPP in non-phosphated detergent, and it can be manufactured from montmoril- lonite, which may greatly reduce the cost. This paper investigates the synthesis of zeolite 4A from montmorillonite in which montmorillonite is treated with sulfuric add at first. Many factors'that have great effects on the qualities of zeolite 4A product, including the acidification conditions and synthesis conditions as well as removing quartz from clay, are studied in detail. And pilot plant scale test of 400L has also been carried out. The results show that the acidification conditions, including acid concentration, weight ratio of solid to liquid, temperature, time, etc, have effect on the whitenes and purity of zeolite 4A product. The optimal acidification conditions are to use 30% H2SO4 solution, 1:3 wright ratio of solid to liquid, at 95, and for 10h. For the synthesis conditions we find: screen and alkalinization of activated silicic add gel, decreasing moral composition of Na2O/H2O of reaction mixture, adding direct agent, increasing rotate speed and etc., can decrease the mean particle size of zeolite 4A product. But if Na2O/H2O0. 06 hydrated sodalite which is another unexpected type of zeolite would be generated. Consequently the moral composition of reaction mixture (we think better) is 3Na2O:Al3O3: SiO2: 100H2O. bodes adding direct agent can reduce the time of crystallization of zeolite 4A greatly. In addition, cleanup of kettle scale in time can prevent the birth of hydrated sodalite. The results also show that removing quartz impurities from clay can improve the purity and qualities of zeolite 4A. Finally detergent-used zeolite 4A with good qualities is synthesized successfully in the pilot plant scale test of 400L. Main properties of zeolite 4A obtained are: whiteness: 93-95%, ion exchange capacity: 285-322 Ca- CO3/g, particle size distribution: 4um occupying 85-87% and 10um occupying 99%. These properties of zeolite 4A product have reached or e-coeded the industrial standard of PRC. Compared with conventional method that uses water glass as its silica resource, this method has exactly the same perfect qualities and is more economical.

Abstract:The symmetric Gemini quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactant dichloride-N,N,N′,N′-tetra methyl-N,N′-dicetyl-2-propanol-1,3-ammonium(DTDPA)was synthesized based on the laboratory study.The chemical structure of compound was identified by IR;heat analysis was conducted by DTA and TG.The surface activity of DTDPA solution was better than traditional classic amphiphilic moieties surfactants.The interfacial tensions between crude oil from Zhongyuan Oil Filed of China and DTDPA solution were measured and the study results demonstrated that DTDPA is effective in lowering crude oil-water system interfacial tension.The relationship between DTDPA and the viscosity of PAM solution was studied and the result demonstrated that DTDPA is fit to be applied to Surfactant-Polymer(SP) system.

Abstract:This study presents a novel technique for the controllable preparation of calcium benzene sulfonate [Ca(Ar-SO3)(2)] detergents using a microdispersion process. Neutralization and carbonation were conducted in an oil-in-water system instead of the typical water-in-oil system. n-Butanol was employed as the oil phase for the in situ formation of the hydrophobic cores of the detergents. The mechanism of synthesis in different bulk phases was investigated. Microreactors were used to enhance the mixing performance and mass transfer. Low-cost Ca(OH)(2) and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (Ar-SO3H) were supplied as the reactants. An efficient synthesis with a high utilization ratio of CO2 and a high product yield was achieved. CaCO3 nanoparticles with average sizes from 8 to 20 nm were used as detergent cores, and Ca(Ar-SO3)(2) detergents with total base numbers (TBNs) ranging from 300 to 420 mg of KOH/g were successfully prepared.

Abstract:Surface tension, micelle formation, surface adsorption, and solubilization of dimethylaminoazobenzene (DMAB) are studied in aqueous solutions of 3-alkoxyl-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (alkoxyl = C n H 2n+1 O, n = 8, 12, 14, 16), of sodium dodecyl sulfonate, and of mixtures of these cationic surfactants and the anionic surfactant at 40°C. Synergistic effects on micelle formation, surface tension reduction, and solubilization enhancement of DMAB are observed in the cationic–anionic mixed surfactant systems. The experimental results are discussed in the light of the interactions between the two kinds of surfactant ions.

Abstract:As a mussel-inspired material, the unique property of polydopamine (PDA), such as a simple preparation, strong adhesive property, easy functionalization, et. al. qualifies it a promising intermediary for the preparation of anion exchangers. Herein, we describe the fabrication of a core-shell structure utilizing poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) (PS-DVB) microspheres as core and PDA coating as shell. Then PDA coating shell was used as the secondary functional platform for further quaternization based on the residual amino groups. The anion exchanger was characterized by scanning electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis. The chromatographic performance was evaluated by separating seven conventional anions, organic weak acids, et. al. According to the results, the introduce of PDA functional platform makes PS-DVB to be quaternized under mild conditions. The quaternization strategy presented here is suitable for the preparation of anion exchangers.

Abstract:The paper deals, through a comparative hermeneutical macro and microanalysis, identical and very similar representational and meaning systems of such great medieval mystical writings as the Book Bahir, the Targum to Song of Songs and the Royal Mirror of St Stephen of Hungary. The basis of the comparison is the hidden (“highest”) presence of the spirit of the Great Monarch. The ‘identified’ mystical patterns are compared with the representational and meaning systems in the great medieval art-works related to Constantine Porphyrogenitus in Part II of the paper.

Abstract:Protease is the main enzyme of detergent. Through the combination of different proteases and the combination of protease and detergent additives, it can adapt to different washing conditions to improve the washing effect. In this experiment, whiteness determination, microscope scanning, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to detect the whiteness values of the cloth pieces before and after washing, as well as the stain residue between the fibers on the surface of the cloth pieces. The protease detergent formula with better decontamination and anti-deposition effects was selected. The combination of alkaline protease, keratinase, and trypsin was cost-effective in removing stains. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the molecular weight of the protein significantly changed after adding the enzyme preparation during washing, and the molecular weight of the protein was directly proportional to protein redeposition. The composite protease had a better comprehensive decontamination effect, and when compatible with suitable surfactants, anti-redeposition agents, and water-softening agents, the compound protease detergent exhibited a stronger decontamination ability than commercial detergents.

Abstract:Enzymatic additives, particularly alkaline proteases, play a crucial role in enhancing detergent effectiveness against protein-based stains. Despite advancements in enzyme stabilization techniques, there is a need for innovative strategies to further improve protease stability in laundry detergents. However, research exploring the utilization of substrate imprinting technology to achieve this objective remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the stability of alkaline proteases in laundry detergents by employing casein as an imprinting substrate and utilizing transglutaminase-mediated (TGase) crosslinking to modify proteases 102 and 306. The optimal temperature, pH, and thermal stability of the modified alkaline proteases 102 and 306 showed no significant changes. However, these two modified alkaline proteases exhibited varying degrees of improvement in stability among the 14 detergent additives tested. Under 40 °C incubation for 24 h, the relative enzyme activity of modified alkaline protease 102 increased approximately 1.4–15-fold in AEO-9, BS-12, CMI, APG, FMEE, and SOE, while the relative enzyme activity of modified alkaline protease 306 increased approximately 1.2–3.7-fold across different additives (FMEE, AEO-9, BS-12, SOE, FAA, and AEC-9Na). These modified proteases demonstrated improved stability and wider applicability across commercial detergent formulations available. Integrated into standard laundry detergent at a 1:7 ratio before and after modification, they effectively removed protein stains from the cotton fabric after 24 h of 40 °C incubation. These findings provide insights into more effective stain-removal techniques.

Abstract:The effects of surfactants on protease with and without stabilizer boric acid were investigated in this paper. From the structural features of surfactants, we discussed the possible mechanism between surfactants and protease. Surfactants studied were anionic surfactants having varying hydrophilic group and nonionic surfactants having varying hydrophobic types and chain length. The results showed that anionic surfactant linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) has the biggest influence on protease, due to benzene ring in its structure; nonionic surfactant fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene (AEO) with more ethylene oxide shows bigger impact on protease; carbon chain length in alkyl polyglucosides (APGs) has less influence on protease. Understanding the reaction mechanism of surfactants and protease is essential for many industry uses. Especially the results provide references for the application of protease in laundry formulation.

Abstract:Brushite (dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, DCPD) is considered one of the possible precursors of the apatitic phase that constitutes the mineral component of bones, and it is often utilized in the preparation of biomaterials for hard tissue repair. In this work, we investigated the influence of ionic substitution on the synthesis, structure, and morphology of this calcium phosphate, as well as on its hydrolysis process. The results of structural refinements indicate that the range of possible substitution can reach values up to about 38 atom % for the big Sr ion, whereas it is quite limited for Zn, Co, and Mn. In particular, DCPD cannot be obtained as a single phase in the presence of zinc ions in solution. The kind and amount of substituent ions significantly influence the morphology of DCPD, promoting aggregation and crystal shape modifications, as well as its hydrolysis in solution. The results provide useful information for the understanding of the mineralization processes and for the design of new biomaterials.The different roles played by some bivalent cations—namely, strontium, zinc, cobalt, and manganese—in the synthesis and hydrolysis of brushite are presented. The kind of substituent ion has a main influence on the extent of possible replacement to calcium, as well as on the structural and morphological features of obtained crystals.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The use of softeners is essential for enhancing laundered fabrics and hair textures after washing. For these, products based on double‐tailed cationic surfactants are used to reduce friction and static electricity, resulting in softer and smoother fibers. These surfactants form lamellar phases in water, which can be turned into vesicles and other bilayer aggregates upon shearing, greatly impacting on the rheological properties of these formulations. This study aims at elucidating how some parameters of the formulation process impact bilayer structures formation and the product rheology, using di(hydrogenated tallow)dimethylammonium chloride (DHTDMAC) aqueous dispersions as model system. Small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) analyses revealed lamellar phases starting from 3% DHTDMAC, with a bilayer thickness of 1.90 ± 0.03 nm, indicating significant carbon chain interdigitation. At this concentration (3%), bilayers exhibited a repetition distance of 69 nm, unveiling a behavior close to the one predicted for infinite swelling, in which lamellar structures persisted even at high dilution. Temperature plays a significant role in the rheological behavior, with elevated temperatures favoring vesicle formation, resulting in reduced apparent viscosity due to lower resistance of vesicles to flow. Upon heating, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed a transition from Lβ (gel) to Lα (fluid) structures between 28 and 41°C, which was further confirmed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Both structural and thermotropic features observed were discussed and compared to information reported for a high‐purity grade homologue of DHTDMAC, dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) mixed with water. These findings deepen the understanding of fabric softener formulation and the impact of bilayer structures formation on their properties, and should be used to optimize new formulations, enhancing their overall performance and sensorial quality.
