Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.
Highly swelling, tough intelligent self-healing hydrogel with body temperature-response

Abstract:Achieving hydrogels with mechanical and self-healing properties is highly desirable for their expanding applications, yet remains an ongoing challenge. The synergistic design of dynamic reversible chemical bond opens a new research direction for this material. Herein, a molecular design strategy is proposed via dynamic reversible ionic bond formed between amino and sulfonic acid groups endow self-healing properties for hydrogels while introducing the N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) crosslinked network realized the strength property including high compressive strength and high ductility, and intrinsic temperature sensitivity due to its unique amphiphilic structure for water. By adjusting the mass ratios of NIPAm, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and chitosan (CS), the optimal synthesis conditions for the P(AMPS-NIPAm)/CS hydrogel were obtained. Importantly, this intelligent P(AMPS-NIPAm)/CS hydrogel reveals a successful balance between mechanical and self-healing properties into advanced materials. The self-healing efficiency is as high as 98.51%. Furthermore, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of sample AMPS/CS-1.4:1 is 37 ℃, which is closest to the human body temperature. These characteristics open a novel pathway to intelligent self-healing hydrogels in terms of drug delivery and wound dressings.

Abstract:Based on the strategy of dynamic metal-coordination for improving mechanical properties, a further ideal was taken to prepare the tough hydrogels with the combination of self-crosslinking monomer and metal-coordination complexes. Herein, a series of hydrogels of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (P(AM-co-AAc-co-NMAM)) consisting the chemical crosslinking induced by NMAM units and the physical crosslinking derived from the coordination complexes of carboxyl-Fe3+ were prepared. The molecular structure was investigated with the ATR-FTIR, Raman and UV-vis spectra. These hydrogels with different water content of 57-93% possess good mechanical performances. The optimal hydrogels possess high tensile strength (8.56 MPa), prominent modulus (15.5 MPa), remarkable toughness (37.85 MJ/m(3)) and superb tearing energy (7062 J/m(2)). The tough hydrogels also display excellent self-recovery (95% toughness recovery within 50 min), pH-triggered healing, shape memory and plasticity abilities. These hydrogels having high strength and toughness may broaden range of potential applications in load-bearing soft actuators, flexible electronics, etc.

Abstract:The utility model relates to a self‐healing hydrogel with good mechanical properties, healing and plugging properties. The P(AM‐co‐AMPS)/SA DN hydrogel was synthesized through aqueous polymerization in this study. It formed a crosslinking network with hydrophobic associations between acrylamide (AM) and lauryl methacrylate (LMA), as well as an ionic bond network involving sodium alginate and Ca2+. To enhance its high‐temperature resistance, 2‐acrylamide‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) was incorporated into the hydrogel formulation. The structure of the hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Results demonstrated that the hydrogel exhibited excellent temperature resistance and possessed a porous structure. Mechanical testing revealed a high tensile strength of 110 kPa, elongation at break of 995.31%, along with good fatigue resistance and self‐recovery performance during multiple cyclic stretching. Healing experiments indicated that the healing strength of the hydrogel was influenced by temperature variations. Furthermore, pressure plugging tests were conducted on steel models with crack widths of 0.5 and 1 mm, respectively; it was found that the 0.8%P(AM‐co‐AMPS)/SA DN hydrogel could withstand pressures up to 4.5 MPa at a temperature of 70°C. This novel hydrogel material exhibits remarkable mechanical properties along with certain self‐healing capabilities, making it suitable for leak control applications.

Abstract:Through the use of non-covalent chitosan (CS) crosslinkers, reversible yet strong non-covalent interactions are introduced into the poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) temperature-sensitive hydrogel, which renders desirable mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and most importantly high-level self-healing capability, in combination of facile temperature response near body temperature for drug loading/release. Best overall performance is then reached by optimizing the formulation of CS, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), acrylic acid (PAA), and acrylamide (AM) in the CS-g-P(NIPAM-AM-AA) graft copolymer system. By virtue of quantum chemical calculations, the nature of a variety of non-covalent interactions within the hydrogel framework is uncovered, those of which between CS and PAM units is found to be superiorly strong, being predominately responsible for the excellent self-healing capability. Synthesis of the hydrogel system simply requires a single-step one-pot procedure, where low cost of all components and the production process is guaranteed. After a series of synthetic optimizations, we notice that hydrogel with NIPAM/AM = 7/1 have the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, 37 °C) corresponding to human body temperature, elongation at break of more than 1500%, strain recovery ratio and stress recovery ratio of 92.89% and 96.15%, remarkable biocompatibility and can provide a good and stable drug loading and release platform. In a nutshell, this study provides a low-cost yet highly viable approach for self-healable thermosensitive hydrogels with biocompatibility, which is appropriate for commercial uses.

Abstract:Herein, we report an easy-to-prepare polyamic acid salt (PAAS) hydrogel with multiple functionalities including rapid self-healing, stimuli-responsive properties, and conductivity. This study describes a method for synthesizing PAAS hydrogel in aqueous solution. Phenylenediamine and 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride were used to prepare a hydrogel with a fully aromatic backbone via gradual polymerization. It is possible to use the gel in the field of biomaterials in the absence of organic solvents. The prepared hydrogel was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic rheometry. The gel has good toughness and the storage modulus and tensile stress are, respectively, about 0.25 and 0.45 MPa. Our study may pave the way for the manufacture of PAAS hydrogel, which may promote the development of hydrogel materials.

Abstract:Tough polyampholyte hydrogels have attracted large attention owing to their favorable mechanical strength, shape memory, and self-healing properties. However, traditional tough polyampholyte hydrogels only have salt responsiveness, and the self-healing usually takes a long time or needs extra treatments. Moreover, self-reinforcement of the hydrogels is essential for the hydrogels during use after the preparation process. In the present work, a weak cationic monomer is introduced to the polyampholyte hydrogel system and copolymerized with a strong cationic monomer and strong anionic monomer with an equal mole ratio between total cationic monomers and anionic monomers. The hydrogel can fix the temporary shape in HCl solution and recover to the original shape in NaOH solution. Interestingly, the hydrogel shows a self-reinforcement capability and the tensile strength increases continuously to ten times larger than that of the as-prepared one by alternately immersing in HCl and NaOH solutions, which presents a new strategy to strengthen the polyampholyte hydrogel. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits a rapid self-healing capability within 5 min just by making contact without any extra treatment. Healable simulated blood vessels and conductive hydrogel devices are designed consequently. Abstract:In this study, we report the fabrication and characterization of self-healing and shape-memorable hydrogels, the mechanical properties of which can be tuned via post-polymerization crosslinking. These hydrogels were constructed from a thermo-responsive poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (NAGAm) copolymer containing N-acryloyl serine methyl ester (NASMe) units (5 mol%) that were readily synthesized via conventional radical copolymerization. This transparent and free-standing hydrogel is produced via multiple hydrogen bonds between PNAGAm chains by simply dissolving the polymer in water at a high temperature (~90 °C) and then cooling it. This hydrogel exhibited moldability and self-healing properties. The post-polymerization crosslinking of the amino acid-derived vinyl copolymer network with glutaraldehyde, which acts as a crosslinker between the hydroxy groups of the NASMe units, tuned mechanical properties such as viscoelasticity and tensile strength. The optimal crosslinker concentration efficiently improved the viscoelasticity. Moreover, these hydrogels exhibited shape fixation (~60%)/memory (~100%) behavior owing to the reversible thermo-responsiveness (upper critical solution temperature-type) of the PNAGAm units. Our multifunctional hydrogel, with moldable, self-healing, mechanical tunability via post-polymerization crosslinking, and shape-memorable properties, has considerable potential for applications in engineering and biomedical materials.

Abstract:The growing list of potential applications of soft materials increases the demand for, among others, new multifunctional hydrogels. We propose a hybrid double-network hydrogel based on synthetic poly(acrylic acid) and alginate, a natural polymer. These polymer networks were double crosslinked: chemically and physically. The ferrous ion was used to catalyze the decomposition of the initiator and later, after its oxidation by the initiator to the ferric ion, was coordinated by the carboxylic groups of the polymer networks and acted as a physicochemical crosslinker. The composition of the hydrogel was optimized to get improved mechanical and electrical properties, and the self-healing ability. The introduction of the coordination bond between Fe3+ and the carboxylic groups of AA and alginate molecules created the ability of self-healing of the hydrogels; they could regenerate without any external stimulus and regain their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Inspired by smart biological tissues, artificial muscle-like actuators offer fascinating prospects due to their distinctive shape transformation and self-healing function under external stimuli. However, further practical application is hindered by the lack of simple and general routes to fabricate ingenious soft materials with anisotropic responsiveness. Here, we describe a general in situ polymerization strategy for the fabrication of anisotropic hydrogels composed of highly-ordered lamellar network crosslinked by the metal nanostructure assemblies, accompanied with remarkably anisotropic performances on mechanical, optical, de-swelling and swelling behaviors. Owing to the dynamic thiolate-metal coordination as healing motifs, the composites exhibit rapid and efficient multi-responsive self-healing performance under NIR irradiation and low pH condition. Dependent on well-defined anisotropic structures, the hydrogel presents controllable solvent-responsive mechanical actuating performance. Impressively, the integrated device through a healing-induced assembly way can deliver more complicated, elaborate forms of actuation, demonstrating its great potentials as superior soft actuators like smart robots.

Abstract:In this study, we report the fabrication and characteristics of a self-healing polymer forming an ionically bonded network based on carboxylic acids and alkyl amines. The self-healing polymer forming an ionically bonded network is prepared from acrylic acid-containing carboxylic groups in the main chain and ammonium carboxylate salts derived from alkyl amines of varying lengths. The nature of the ion bonding between alkyl amines and carboxylic acids within the polymer matrix was analyzed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The self-healing polymer, incorporating ionically bound entities like ammonium carboxylate salts, demonstrated 100% self-healing efficiency at room temperature overnight, in contrast to the reference polymer without ion bonding. Various lengths of alkyl amines used to form ammonium carboxylate salts exhibited remarkable properties such as over 500% elongation at break, adhesive strength exceeding 300 gf, and light transmittance of over 90%, all dependent on the length of the alkyl chain.

Autonomous Ultrafast-Self-healing Hydrogel for Application in Multiple Environments

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels have attracted much attention in the fields of biomedicine and wearable electronic devices. However, traditional hydrogels require external stimulation to induce the repair process. Moreover, the relatively weak mechanical properties and long repair time often limit the depth of the hydrogel application. Nevertheless, in this work, we report an ultrafast-self-healing high-strength hydrogel with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the structural support framework, borax/H3BO3 (BB) solution was used for crosslinking and PVA/glycerin as the dynamic covalent bond. The skeletal structure restricts free PVA segments, and small glycerin molecules form dynamic bonds in a limited area, and thus, a hydrogel with a locally ordered structure is formed. In particular, since numerous hydrogen bonds and dynamic covalent bonds are reversibly formed under the limitation of the skeleton, the hydrogel has a high degree of adaptability and can exhibit self-healing (<5 s, 0.74 MPa) under various conditions. Based on this skeletal structure, the positive feedback function can be realized, so that the hydrogel has ultrafast-self-healing ability, excellent mechanical, anti-freezing performances, and electrical conductivity. The physically connected hydrogel thus prepared can be used in various future application fields, including sensor technology, tissue engineering, and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Based on the favorable biocompatibility, thermo-responsive hydrogels have attracted much attention. Therefore, more and more researchers have focused on the synthesis, characterizations and applications of thermo-responsive hydrogels.In this study, copolymer of P(N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide-co-diacetone acrylamide) P(NAM-co-DAA) with ketone groups were prepared to construct the thermo-responsive hydrogel through cross-linking induced thermo-response (CIT). The dihydrazide compounds were employed to cross-link the copolymer to make a self-healing hydrogel which containing ketone type reversible acylhydrazone bond. The resultant self-healing hydrogel has shown the excellent mechanical properties and chemical stabilities. At the same time, the hydrogel presented reversible gel-sol based on the pH value and group ratio. These thermo-responsive self-healing hydrogels also demonstrate wonderful biocompatibility, which extends its potential applications as biomaterials.

Abstract:Bentonite is a natural clay mineral with high cationic exchange properties and plays an important role in organic-inorganic composite hydrogels. We report an organic-inorganic cross-linked self-healing hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties by introducing acrylic acid-modified bentonite(AABT) into its cross-link network. AABT with unsaturated double bonds was co-polymerized with AA to construct the hybrid cross-link network of the hydrogel. Then, the carboxyl groups in the PAA chain reacted with CS to form a physically cross-linked network with a hydrogen bond structure. As confirmed by FTIR, XRD, XPS and SEM, the AABT participated in the formation of the hydrogel network, and the hydrogen bonds between PAA and CS chains were formed. Our AABT-PAA/CS hydrogels possessed tensile strength, compressive modulus and elongation at break as high as 0.96 MPa, 4.5 MPa and 1331%, respectively. Besides, our hydrogels also exhibited excellent self-healing properties, with recovered rate stress and strain of ∼76.6% and ∼77.7% after 4 h, respectively.

Abstract:Poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA) with a protein-like thermoresponsive gelation behavior in water has been developed as a high strength self-healable supramolecular polymer(SP) hydrogels recently. However, harsh conditions, such as high temperature treatment and long waiting time, were required for achieving the complete healing due to strong dual amide hydrogen bonding interactions. In this study, to create an autonomic rapid self-healing SP hydrogel, we deliberately introduced a methyl into the opposite side to dual amide to synthesize N-methacryloyl glycinamide (MNAGA) monomer. Rheological analysis, dynamic light scattering(DLS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Gaussian calculation revealed that one substitution methyl caused a considerable perturbation to the hydrogen bonding interaction, thus leading to the increased starting gelling concentration and pronounced decrease in mechanical properties of PMNAGA hydrogel compared to PNAGA hydrogel. The PMNAGA hydrogel was shown to exhibit rapid autonomic reparability without any external intervention, and dynamic swelling measurement indicated this PMNAGA hydrogel could evolve from permanent to transient network due to the metastable hydrogen bonding crosslinkage, depending on its environmental temperature. Abstract:Biological soft tissues usually execute their functions via nonequilibrium and dynamic structural transformations. By contrast, functional hydrogels are mainly constructed by implementing static and equilibrium structures in the polymer network. Here, using polyampholyte hydrogel as a model system, we demonstrated that the nonequilibrium structure transformation in self-healing hydrogels enables the gels with many new features, including thermal history dependence, quick and asymmetric thermal response (instant transparent-to-turbid transition but slow turbid-to-transparent transition), tunable cloud point, tunable recovery time, and tiny changes in sample size and mechanical performance. These features make them distinct to conventional thermoresponsive hydrogels based on thermodynamic equilibrium and endow them with a new type of promising thermoresponsive materials. We revealed the structure change and studied the role of the thermal protocol on this thermoresponsive behavior by combining ultraviolet spectrum, small-angle X-ray scattering, rheology, and mechanical measurements. We also presented two conceptual applications of this thermoresponsive hydrogel in thermal imaging and security paper. We believe that this work will inspire future research on creating functional hydrogels via nonequilibrium structure transformations.

Abstract:With the prosperity of flexible energy storage and wearable strain sensing, the ion conductive hydrogel attracts booming attention as electrolyte materials of flexible supercapacitors and flexible strain sensors due to the distinguishing soft and wet feature. Herein, a self-healing hydrogel with mechanical, adhesive and conductive properties has been designed and prepared by introducing polydopamine nanoparticles and water-soluble ionic liquids into hydrophobic association polyacrylamide. The resultant hydrogel samples could be employed as an electrolyte and wearable strain sensor, simultaneously. As hydrogel electrolytes, the resultant supercapacitor possesses a capacitance of 0.37 F g(-1)and capacitance retention of 75.42% after 8000 cyclic charge-discharge tests. Furthermore, the supercapacitor exhibits a capacitance of 0.365 F g(-1)after self-healing, which is 98.65% compared to the original data. As flexible strain sensors, the hydrogels could detect tiny and large-scale human movements in accordance with resistive signals and a gauge factor of 0.841. It could be anticipated that the self-healing hydrogels could be prospective flexible materials for a new generation of flexible sensors and supercapacitors over a wide temperature range.

Abstract:Ionic hydrogels have important value for applications in bionic skin and flexible sensor fields. However, general ionic hydrogels suffer from inevitable damage and reduction of service life after long-term use. Here, we propose a dual-mechanism-driven strategy with a reversible metal coordination bond and dynamic hydrogen bond to construct a novel fast self-healing ionic hydrogel via a facile “two-step” approach based on environmental-friendly natural resources as raw materials. The dual-mechanism-driven mode endows the hydrogel with excellent self-healing properties (3 h, 95.31%), tensile strength (479.8 kPa), compression strength (5.235 MPa), and fatigue resistance. The hydrogel also showed excellent self-adhesion performance, even underwater, as well as high and stable conductivity (σ = 17.54 mS·cm–1). In addition, it has an ion-responsive deformation feature so that the hydrogel can be shaped and restored in different ion solutions. As a sensor on human skin, the high sensitivity (GF = 2.363) enables it to detect and distinguish various human movements and even different letter pronunciations and pulses. These excellent performances lay a solid foundation for its application in bionic skin and flexible sensor fields.
