Abstract:With the maturation of satellite technology, Hyperspectral Remote Sensing (HRS) platforms have developed from the initial ground-based and airborne platforms into spaceborne platforms, which greatly promotes the civil application of HRS imagery in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and environmental monitoring. China is playing an important role in this evolution, especially in recent years, with the successful launch and operation of a series of civil hyperspectral spacecraft and satellites, including the Shenzhou-3 spacecraft, the Gaofen-5 satellite, the SPARK satellite, the Zhuhai-1 satellite network for environmental and resources monitoring, the FengYun series of satellites for meteorological observation, and the Chang'E series of spacecraft for planetary exploration. The Chinese spaceborne HRS platforms have various new characteristics, such as the wide swath width, high spatial resolution, wide spectral range, hyperspectral satellite networks, and microsatellites. This paper focuses on the recent progress in Chinese spaceborne HRS, from the aspects of the typical satellite systems, the data processing, and the applications. In addition, the future development trends of HRS in China are also discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:Highly accurate observations at various scales on the land surface are urgently needed for the studies of many areas, such as hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture. With the rapid development of remote sensing techniques, remote sensing has had the capacity of monitoring many factors of the Earth's land surface. Especially, the space-borne microwave remote sensing systems have been widely used in the quantitative monitoring of global snow, soil moisture, and vegetation parameters with their all-weather, all-time observation capabilities and their sensitivities to the characteristics of land surface factors. Based on the electromagnetic theories and microwave radiative transfer equations, researchers have achieved great successes in the microwave remote sensing studies for different sensors in recent years. This article has systematically reviewed the progresses on five research areas including microwave theoretical modeling, microwave inversion on soil moisture, snow, vegetation and land surface temperatures. Through the further enrichment of remote sensing datasets and the development of remote sensing theories and inversion techniques, remote sensing including microwave remote sensing will play a more important role in the studies and applications of the Earth systems.

Abstract:Over the past 60 years, China has made fruitful achievements in the field of ocean microwave remote sensing satellite technology. A long-term plan has now been formulated for the development of Chinese ocean satellites, as well as the construction of a constellation of ocean dynamic environmental and ocean surveillance satellites. These will gradually form China’s ocean monitoring network from space, thereby playing important roles in future ocean resource and environmental monitoring, marine disaster prevention and reduction, and global climate change. In this review manuscript, the developmental history of ocean microwave satellites and the development status of oceanic microwave remote sensing satellites in China are reviewed. In addition, China’s achievements in the field of oceanic microwave remote sensing satellite technology are summarized, and the future development of China’s ocean microwave remote sensing satellite program is analysed.

Abstract:In this paper, the latest progress, major achievements and future plans of Chinese meteorological satellites and the core data processing techniques are discussed. First, the latest three FengYun (FY) meteorological satellites (FY-2H, FY-3D, and FY-4A) and their primary objectives are introduced. Second, the core image navigation techniques and accuracies of the FY meteorological satellites are elaborated, including the latest geostationary (FY-2/4) and polar-orbit (FY-3) satellites. Third, the radiometric calibration techniques and accuracies of reflective solar bands, thermal infrared bands, and passive microwave bands for FY meteorological satellites are discussed. It also illustrates the latest progress of real-time calibration with the onboard calibration system and validation with different methods, including the vicarious China radiance calibration site calibration, pseudo invariant calibration site calibration, deep convective clouds calibration, and lunar calibration. Fourth, recent progress of meteorological satellite data assimilation applications and quantitative science produce are summarized at length. The main progress is in meteorological satellite data assimilation by using microwave and hyper-spectral infrared sensors in global and regional numerical weather prediction models. Lastly, the latest progress in radiative transfer, absorption and scattering calculations for satellite remote sensing is summarized, and some important research using a new radiative transfer model are illustrated.

Abstract:China has made significant achievements on the applications of satellite ocean remote sensing since 1970s. Three series of Chinese ocean satellites including the ocean color satellites, marine dynamic environment satellites and ocean surveillance satellites have already been constructed, and a preliminary complementary opera-tional application system of satellite ocean remote sensing has been found. In this paper, we review the important progresses of the application of ocean satellite remote sensing in China, focusing on the typical satellite remote sensing application demonstration systems in marine environment and resources monitoring, marine disasters mon-itoring, marine rights and interests maintaining, marine environment forecasting and safety assurance, as well as typical operational marine satellite monitoring applications. Finally, we give a prospect of the future development of ocean satellite remote sensing applications in China.

Abstract:Active and passive microwave sensor are very important for atmospheric and surface parameters monitoring. In past decades, microwave sensors like SSM/I, AMSR-E and PR have got great achievements in measuring global temperature profile and Precipitation, as well as surface parameters like soil moisture and snow water equivalent. FY3 series satellite is the new generation meteorological satellites of China. Its main objective is to provide data needed for meteorological application. There are 2 microwave sounders and 1 microwave imager onboard the FY3 satellite, provide the air temperature, humidity and surface parameters information under all weather conditions. we plan to develop our own active microwave sensor In FY3-02 series satellites, which is planed to be launched in 2012. In FY3-02 series, the active microwave sensor, together with other two sensors, are to be setting in a low altitude orbit satellite, together with other two mid-altitude satellites, consists the whole FY3-02 series meteorological satellite constellation. The main target of the active microwave sensor is to monitor the precipitation and disaster weather in global scale. © 2009 SPIE.
Advances on Technology and Application of Ocean Color Remote Sensing in China (2004 - 2006)

Abstract:China has great progress in the technology and application of ocean color remote sensing during 2004-2006. In this report, firstly, four major technical advances are displaying, including (1) the vector radiative transfer numerical model of coupled ocean-atmosphere system; (2) the atmospheric correction algorithm specialized on Chinese high turbid water; (3) systematical research of hyper-spectrum ocean color remote sensing; (4) local algorithms of oceanic parameters, like ocean color components, ocean primary productivity, water transparency, water quality parameters, etc. On the foundation of technical advances, ocean color remote sensing takes effect on ocean environment monitoring, with four major kinds of application systems, namely, (1) the automatic multi-satellites data receiving, processing and application system; (2) the shipboard satellite data receiving and processing system for fishery ground information; (3) Coastal water quality monitoring system, integrating satellite and airborne remote sensing technology and ship measurement; (4) the preliminary system of airborne ocean color remote sensing application system. Finally, the prospective development of Chinese ocean color remote sensing is brought forward. With Chinese second ocean color satellite (HY-1B) orbiting, great strides will take place in Chinese ocean color information accumulation and application.
Developing Vicarious Calibration for Microwave Sounding Instruments Using Lunar Radiation.

Abstract:Accurate global observations from space are critical for global climate change study. However, atmospheric temperature trend derived from spaceborne microwave instruments remains a subject of debate, due mainly to the uncertainty in characterizing the long-term drift of instrument calibration. Thus, a highly stable target with a well-known microwave radiation is required to evaluate the long-term calibration stability. This paper develops a new model to simulate the lunar emission at microwave frequencies, and the model is then used for monitoring the stability of the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard Suomi NPP satellite. It is shown that the ATMS cold space view of lunar radiation agrees well with the model simulation during the past five years and this instrument is capable of serving the reference instrument for atmospheric temperature trending studies, and connecting the previous generation of microwave sounders from NOAA-15 to the future Joint Polar Satellite System Microwave Sounder onboard NOAA-20 satellite.

Abstract:<span>Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, several countries have made great efforts to develop space remote sensing for building a high-resolution earth observation system. Under the great attention of the government and the guidance of the major scientific and technological project of the high-resolution earth observation system, China has made continuous breakthroughs and progress in high-resolution remote sensing imaging technology. The development of domestic high-resolution remote sensing satellites shows a vigorous trend, and consequently, a relatively stable and perfect high-resolution earth observation system has been formed. The development of high-resolution remote sensing satellites has greatly promoted and enriched modern mapping technologies and methods. In this paper, the development status, along with mapping modes and applications of China's high-resolution remote sensing satellites are reviewed, and the development trend in high-resolution earth observation system for global and ground control-free mapping is discussed, providing a reference for the subsequent development of high-resolution remote sensing satellites in China.</span>

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing technology has been widely used in environmental protection in China. Based on China’s environmental protection characteristics, this paper reviews the application advancements of optical, infrared, microwave and hyperspectral satellite remote sensing techniques in atmospheric environment, water environment and ecological environment, respectively, including the atmospheric environment monitoring of aerosols, particulate matter, pollution gases, and greenhouse gases; the water environment monitoring of water blooms water quality, oil spills, water pollution and drinking water safety; the ecological environment monitor of national nature reserves, environmental damages from mines development, soil contamination, urban/rural ecological environment and biodiversity richness. Furthmore, it summarizes the limitations and future directions of satellite remote sensing studies in China environmental protection. The paper specifically notes that the development of high-resolution satellite remote sensing technology, as well as the launch and use of China series satellites could significantly improve the level of government’s environmental management.

Abstract:The Gaofen-3 (GF-3) satellite is China's first civilian quad-polarized C-band imaging microwave satellite that can provide high-resolution marine and land observations. Also, it is China's first low Earth orbit remote sensing satellite with a design life of eight years. During the design and development of this satellite, many major challenges have been overcome, such as the design of complex radio frequency channels, difficult system integration, high quantitative requirements, and strict component life requirements. In this article, a series of independent technological innovations in the development of GF-3 is presented. Meanwhile, the on-orbit operation of the satellite in the past five years is introduced, as well as the application of satellite data in marine observation, emergency relief, disaster reduction, surveying and mapping, water conservancy, etc. The further advancement and improvements of the GF-3 satellite are described at the end of this article.

Abstract:This paper presents the progress toward marine applications of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and a review of the SAR satellite program in China. The technique development includes the development of algorithms and of methodology for extracting oceanographic parameters from SAR data. Marine applications range from environmental monitoring to oceanographic research. Two series of SAR satellites have been planned. The first SAR satellite of the Environmental and Disaster Monitoring Satellite series (HJ series) will be launched in 2009 while the first SAR satellite of the Ocean SAR Satellite series (HY-3 series) is in planning phase. A description is given of the instruments and their plateforms.

Abstract:During recent decades, China has successfully launched several programs of satellite-borne remote sensing, including the meteorological Feng-Yun (FY, “wind cloud”) series and oceanic Hai-Yang (HY, “ocean”) series, in broad spectra, i.e., optical, infrared, and microwave. Since the initiation from the early 1970s, a total of nine meteorological satellites, FY series, including five polar-orbit satellites and four geostationary satellites, have been successfully launched. Chinese FY has become an important component of global meteorological satellites systems and continues to maintain long-term stable operations of both polar and stationary meteorological satellites. Later in 2002, China's HY-1, an oceanic color satellite, was launched and is now in good operation. The successive HY-2 and HY-3 of the HY series, including microwave sensors, are also on schedule. Relevant basic research, application, and operational service of satellite-borne remote sensing and Earth observation have been well implemented. In this paper, a brief overview of Chinese satellite-borne remote sensing, FY and HY series, is presented, and some progress is introduced.
Development of Airborne Remote Sensing System in China

Abstract:Airborne remote sensing as an important remote sensing technique has its great advantage and indispensability in the remote sensing system. By giving full play to its importance , the airborne remote sensing technologies and system have been developed to meet the needs of environmental studies, resources exploration and also of the research and development of sciences and technologies in China at recent years. The airborne remote sensing system developed in China has include the sensors system, technical support system and application system etc.. The sensors developed for airborne platform are covered wide range of electromagnetic spectrum from UV, VS, IR to microwave regions. The optical, optic-electronic, multispectral and hyperspectral systems have been developed, operated and successfully used for multidiscipline application, while the airborne synthetic aperture radar and other microwave remote sensing system are also developed and used in many areas, especially in all-weather condition. The great success has been found for disasters monitoring and also in case of emergency response. 1 fig., 4 tabs.

Abstract:The special ocean color satellite HY-1 was in the orbit on May 15, 2002, whose main purpose is detection of marine environment of China Sea. On the satellite there are two sensors, the main load is optical sensor. One is the Chinese Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (COCTS), the other is CCD Coastal Zone Imager (CZI). The main technical system of optical remote sensing were developed both by Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO), State Oceanic Administration (SOA), in 1997 and by National Satellite Ocean Application Service (NSOAS) in 2002. Those systems include the functions of data receiving, processing, distribution, calibration, validation and application for different kinds of satellite, such as FY-1, HY-1, SeaWiFS, AVHRR and MODIS. The science and technology of marine optical remote sensing application progress with the rapid development of national space technology in China, especially with the carrying out of the National High Tech. Project 863.In the paper, three aspects of its advances are mainly introduced. First, a number of sets of marine bio-optical in situ data which are water AOPs and IOPs, such as water leaving radiance, attenuation and up and down water radiance, are measured by investigation boats, and those in-situ data have been applied for HY-1A satellite orbit calibration and the atmospheric correction; Second, the neural network technique is used to inverse the chlorophyll a, and the slope of two optical channel reflectance is developed for more accuracy suspended material mapping and the optical data are tested to extract the marine chemical constituents, such as dissolved organic carbon; Third, the optical remote sensing products are applied for red tide detection, coastal water quality classification, oil spilling monitoring and fishery. Some beneficial suggestions about continuous development of science and technology of the marine optical remote sensing application are discussed in the paper.
Progress in the application of ocean color remote sensing in China

Abstract:After many years' endeavor of research and application practice, the ocean color remote sensing in China has been growing into a new technique with valuable practically from its initiate stage of trial research. With the aim of operational service, several kinds of ocean color remote sensing application systems have been developed and realized the long-term marine environmental monitoring utilizing the real-time or near real-time satellite and airborne remote sensing data. New progresses in the technology and application of ocean color remote sensing in China are described, including the research of key techniques and the development of various application systems. Meanwhile, according to the application status and demand, the prospective development of Chinese ocean color remote sensing is brought forward. With Chinese second ocean color satellite (HY-1B) orbiting on 11 April 2007 and the development of airborne ocean color remote sensing system for Chinese surveillance planes, great strides will take place in Chinese ocean color remote sensing application with the unique function in marine monitoring, resources management and national security, etc.

Abstract:Being one of the rapid discipline branches in atmospheric science,atmospheric remote sensing technology is a critical support to the development of the science.As a branch,passive microwave remote sensing is characteristic of small volume,low power consumption and all-weather observation,and it can provide direct and useful information of the atmosphere,ocean and land surface.As water vapor and cloud liquid water play important roles in the weather and climate changes,the sensing techniques for water vapor and cloud liquid water are important in current meteorological operation.In this paper,we briefly introduce the advancement of passive microwave remote sensing,and chiefly introduce research progress in statistical,physical and physical/statistical retrieval algorithms of water vapor,liquid water and precipitation using microwave sensing.In the last section,future growth prospects of microwave sensing are briefly presented.

Abstract:Remote sensing satellite(Land satellite)has been developed for about 30 years.Since then,the commercial remote sensing satellite technology in the world has great progress.The future developments are quite exciting.This paper is to provide a general concept about present and future image information sources for the application of remote sensing;analyze the present condition of the remote sensing satellite of our country from aspects of the land observation satellite;and introduce the international cooperation circumstance.Through the comparative analysis,it can find out that the trend of the remote sensing satellite mainly develops toward the high resolution of a small scaled and the commercial satellites.

Abstract:The development of earth observation techniques has expanded and deepened the application area of remote sensing further. Meanwhile, the application on remote sensing for land resources has entered a new era marked by high spatial resolution, high spectral resolution and high temporal resolution. Nowadays, remote sensing techniques serve as an important support for the great discovery of geosciences and the modernization of geological work. The remote sensing satellites of our country develop to groups, networks and seriations; its application area develops to fine and quantitative direction; the recent researches both in basic field and application area develop to integration. In the following years, the need for remote sensing application will be more and more imminent. It is an inevitable tide for land remote sensing to use all-weather and multi-angle observation system by which we can observe the earth real-time to survey, suspect and research the resources, energy, and environment What is more, impractical hyper-spectral remote sensing system is an urgent technical platform problem to be solved for further application in remote sensing for resources and energy.
