Abstract:Reconfigurable computing is a new paradigm based on changing the hardware to reconfigure the computation and the communication structure. Currently, various reconfigurable devices have been developed by researchers and the industry. These various architectures form a very large design space. Both application mapping and design space exploration need an abstract model for the architecture. In this paper, a generic parameterized model(PRAM) for reconfigurable architecture is presented. Based on this model, we also propose an architecture description language( RADL). The proposed PRAM and RADL are applied to describe some practical architectures. The experiment results show that this modeling method is able to describe complex, heterogeneous and multi-granularity architectures.

Abstract:Through summarizing the general features of reconfigurable architectures,a reconfigurable architecture model,e.g.hierarchical-parameterized model,was presented in order to make the algorithm mapping and design space exploration method independent on any concrete reconfigurable architecture.This generalpurpose and hierarchical model consists of 4 parts.From top to bottom they are top structure,block structure,element structure and functional structure,where each part represents a structure level.With the corresponding parameters set into the description items,this model can describe the hierarchical architecture of target system,which is crucial to performance.The proposed parameterized model was applied to two domain representative components,in which one is dynamic system and the other is static one.The results showed that both these two cases can be described with this four-level model from top to down,which shows the good extensibility and universality of this modeling method.

Abstract:Reconfigurable computing has become a hot topic in research due to its high-performance and flexibility. In this paper we present a simulator called JRSim for mesh-based reconfigurable architectures. The purpose of this simulator is to provide a platform to evaluate new architectures, and to assist in analysis of algorithms as well as the visualization of their behavior. JRSim is a platform-independent tool which is implemented by Java. It supports flexible bus structure, user-defined function unit and dynamic reconfiguration. Case studies show that JRSim can simulate the behavior of mesh-based reconfigurable systems correctly and efficiently. This simulator can be used to evaluate reconfigurable system design, or demonstrate the ability of reconfigurable system in an educational environment.

Abstract:The reconfigurable CNC system plays an important role for the Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems. The relationship between Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems, Reconfigurable CNC system and open CNC system was analyzed to synthesize CNC system by the hardware and software mode. The focus is on a new application of Field Programmable Gates Array(FPGA) in Reconfiguralbe CNC system, which integrated Programmable Logical Device and Reconfigurable Hardware Technology. After the investigation of its possibility and economic feasibility, the future development of this system is predicted, so that CNC systems can be reconfigurated with this innovative method. An example of economical reconfigurable CNC system is provided to test its feasibility and availability.

Abstract:In the past a few years, wavelet transforms have become a hot topic of research. Discrete and continuous wavelet transforms have been widely used in signal and multimedia processing. Due to the high performance and flexibility of reconfigurable computing systems, it is very attractive to design a re configurable architecture for discrete and continuous wavelet transform of wide range of wavelet filters. In this paper, a unified computation framework for discrete and continuous wavelet transform based on lifting scheme and a reconfigurable architecture that includes reconfigurable lifting step arrays and reconfigurable address generator are proposed. The unified framework is the theory basis of this system. The step array is the computing core of this engine. And the address generator supports several memory scan pattern which is used to generate memory access addresses. In order to validate this architecture, an FPGA prototype is built based on Xilinx VirtexII FPGA to test the reconfiguration of 2-D discrete 5/3 and 9/7 transforms (defined in specification ofJPEG2000) and 2-D continuous Haar wavelet transform. Furthermore, a 3-level decomposition for a 512 times 512 grayscale image is performed and the results show that the decomposition can be finished within 12.16ms when running at 20MHz. It can be concluded that this design is applicable and scalable.

Abstract:We present a novel architecture of asynchronous reconfigurable computing array (ARCA) to seek the balance between performance and versatility. Advancing the completion detector of control circuit, a modified structure of asynchronous micropipeline based on DSDCVSL is discussed. The analysis and simulation of our ARCA have both resulted in high-performance and low-power consumption, and it can be used as an IP module integrated into a system on chip to built the reconfigurable computing platform. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper presents a reconfigurable architecture and associated design methodology for developing networking silicon chips. The tools include most of the common traffic QoS features and low level interfaces as well as some special features for extensible design. When coupled with the design tools, this architecture provides powerful capabilities for the design of highly flexible networking silicon IP cores.

Abstract:With the rapid development of technology, software is rapidly evolving with emerging applications.Chips that fail to adapt to software (e.g., application-specific integrated circuits, ASICs) suffer from a short lifecycle and high nonrecurring engineering (NRE) costs.Meanwhile, as the projection of Moore's law and Dennard scaling are decreasing, energy efficiency has shown a diminishing return with new technologies.The computing capacity of general-purpose processors is limited due to power budgets.Consequently, future chips must jointly optimize flexibility, power efficiency, and ease of programmability.Reconfigurable chips combine the high flexibility of a general-purpose processor and high energy efficiency of ASIC by providing on-demand customization of their architectures.This article thoroughly reviews the development and architecture of reconfigurable chips.Moreover, the future challenges of reconfigurable chips are analyzed.Based on these challenges, future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:It′s difficult to model and simulate reconfigurable computing system. In this paper, a producer-consumer system architecture is suggested following the fundamental character of reconfigurable system. After considering its basic elements′ nature such as data, computation and communication, and investigating the runtime dynamic task state and task scheduling, the authors propose a general modeling and simulation framework based on term-rewriting theory for dynamic reconfigurable system. In the end, the way to define system specification, design task module, simulate and verify the implementation is illustrated with an example. The result that different scheduling strategies generate different systems shows the versatility of this modeling framework.

Abstract:There is a clear turning point in the development history of reconfigurable architectures. Larger execution units (EU) used to be adopted in special domain applications to improve the cost performance of programmable architectures. However, after the granularity of EUs came up to the level of arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and multiplication accumulation unit (MAC), the trend almost stopped. At present, a great number of reconfigurable architectures make use of simple Von-Neumann-architecture processing elements (PE) with such EUs as ALU and MAC. Actually, today's application algorithms are far different from the previous counterparts with the development over the last decades. Larger operation units can be extracted from common application algorithms. Without the coherent enhancement of EUs, it is difficult for reconfigurable architectures to replace the application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) used for most of current high-throughput applications. In order to further improve the performance/cost ratio, this paper presents a novel architecture with very-coarse-grained EUs and fully-data-driven mechanism.

Abstract:The closed architecture and stand-alone operation model of traditional industrial control systems limit their ability to leverage ubiquitous infrastructure resources for more flexible and intelligent development. This restriction hinders their ability to rapidly, economically, and sustainably respond to mass customization demands. Existing proposals for open and networked architectures have failed to break the vicious cycle of closed architectures and stand-alone operation models because they do not address the core issue: the tight coupling among the control, infrastructure, and actuator domains. This paper proposes a reconfigurable architecture that decouples these domains, structuring the control system across three planes: control, infrastructure, and actuator. The computer numerical control (CNC) system serves as a primary example to illustrate this reconfigurable architecture. After reviewing open and networked architectures and discussing the characteristics of this reconfigurable architecture, this paper identifies three key challenges: deterministic control functionality, the decoupling of control modules from infrastructures, and the management of control modules, infrastructures, and actuators. Each challenge is examined in detail, and potential solutions are proposed based on emerging technologies.

Abstract:As general-purpose processors have hit the power wall and chip fabrication cost escalates alarmingly, coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs) are attracting increasing interest from both academia and industry, because they offer the performance and energy efficiency of hardware with the flexibility of software. However, CGRAs are not yet mature in terms of programmability, productivity, and adaptability. This article reviews the architecture and design of CGRAs thoroughly for the purpose of exploiting their full potential. First, a novel multidimensional taxonomy is proposed. Second, major challenges and the corresponding state-of-the-art techniques are surveyed and analyzed. Finally, the future development is discussed.

Abstract:Future manufacturing enterprises must significantly improve their product capabilities and manufacturing systems designs to increase market share and to enhance competitive core competencies. This paper analyzes the theory and methodology of reconfigurable design that manufacturing enterprises urgently need. Reconfigurability based on topological similarity was defined with a generalized axiomatic design theory. The theory takes into account not only the mimimum independent functional requirements, but also their interactions which can not be ignored. Related theorems, consequences and equations were also given. The result shows that the theory can be successfully applied to a rapid reconfigurable manufacturing system.
