Abstract:The present paper supplies biological and lithological evidence for the mechanisms of biochemical cementation in modern beachrocks on the tropical Yongle Atoll, Xiasha Islands in the South China Sea. High-throughput sequencing was used to precisely determine the epilithic microbial community in beachrocks. Microscopic mineralogical examination of sedimentary grains further showed complex processes from rapid carbonate precipitation. The results from 18/16 s rRNA diversity examination indicated that green algae and cyanobacteria only occupied a small proportion of the community, albeit they had considerable amounts. The occurrences of Lyngbya (Family Oscillatoriaceae), Calothrix and Dichothrix (Family Rivulariaceae) with light colour may be related to calcified sheaths coated on the living cells. The short rod-like Mg calcite in Lyngbya sheaths and anhedral to euhedral Mg calcite in Calothrix or Dichothrix sheaths were organominerals mediated most likely by photosynthesis of microorganisms with chloroplasts. Different initial crystal patterns were closely related to different cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) structures. After cell death, these microcrystals were released into the voids and removed by interstitial water. The carbonate seeds scattered all around the particle surface and then began to enlarge the grain size with the degradation of organic matter. Different paths of crystal growth eventually cemented the intertidal grains abiotically or biotically. This case sheds light on cryptic microbially mediated mineralization in beachrock. Even though chemical processes were considerable in the formation of the beachrocks on the modern reef flat, the pervasive microbial geological processes occurred quietly but effectively.
Minerals Determined a Special Ecological Niche and Selectively Enriched Microbial Species from Bulk Water Communities in Hot Springs

Abstract:Minerals provide physical niches and supply nutrients or serve as electron donors/acceptors for microorganism survival and growth, and thus minerals and microbes co-evolved. Yet, little is known about how sediment minerals impact microbial community assembly in hot springs and to what extent mineralogical composition influences microbial community composition and diversity. Here the influences of minerals on thermophiles in Tengchong hot springs were revealed by network analysis of field samples, as well as in-situ microcosm experiments with minerals. A molecular ecological network was constructed based on high throughput sequencing data of 16S rRNA gene, with a combination of water geochemistry and sedimentary mineralogical compositions. Six modules were identified and this highly modular network structure represents the microbial preference to different abiotic factors, consequently resulting in niche partitioning in sedimentary communities in hot springs. Diverse mineralogical compositions generated special niches for microbial species. Subsequently, the in-situ microcosm experiments with four minerals (aragonite, albite, K-feldspar, and quartz) and spring water were conducted in a silicate-hosted alkaline spring (i.e., Gmq) and a carbonate-hosted neutral hot spring (i.e., Gxs) for 70 days. Different microbial preferences were observed among different mineral types (carbonate versus silicate). Aragonite microcosms in Gmq spring enriched archaeal genera Sulfophobococcus and Aeropyrum within the order Desulfurococcales by comparison with both in-situ water and silicate microcosms. Sulfophobococcus was also accumulated in Gxs aragonite microcosms, but the contribution to overall dissimilarity is much lower than that in Gmq spring. Besides, Caldimicrobium was a bacterial genus enriched in Gxs aragonite microcosms, in contrast to in-situ water and silicate microcosms, whereas Candidatus Kryptobacter and Thermus were more abundant in silicate microcosms. The differences in microbial accumulations among different mineral types in the same spring implied that mineral chemistry may exert extra deterministic selective pressure in drawing certain species from the bulk water communities, in addition to stochastic absorption on mineral surface. Taken together, our results highlight the special niche partitioning determined by mineralogical compositions and further confirm that minerals could be used as "fishing bait" to enrich certain rare microbial species.

Abstract:Authigenic carbonates were recovered from several locations of the South China Sea continental slope at a 470m to 770m water depth. The sources of seeping fluids, the time involved in carbonate formation and the potential driving forces are increasingly understood, but little is known about the biogeochemical processes that occur during this type of carbonate precipitation. Here, a molecular and isotopic investigation of authigenic carbonates was conducted to determine the factors controlling the types of microbial consortia in cold-seep environments. The studied carbonates were one aragonitic crust and three high-Mg calcitic tubular concretions from specific sites. A significant input of biogenic methane to the carbon pool during the precipitation of the carbonates was suggested by the presence of 13C-depleted molecular fossils of methanotrophic archaea (with δ13C values as negative at −141.5‰) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (with δ13C values as negative at −128.5‰). The methane was primarily oxidized in an anaerobic process. The predominant consortia were ANME-2 assemblages in the aragonitic carbonate (sample TVG3-C2), whereas high-Mg calcitic carbonates (samples TVG14-C2 and TVG8-C5) were dominated by ANME-1 assemblages according to the specific biomarkers observed. Taking the favored environments for specific AOM consortia and crystallization conditions for aragonite and calcite together, the factors selecting for specific AOM communities appear to be constrained by their biogeochemical settings. Accordingly, higher alkalinity, abundant sulfate concentration and being closer to the water–sediment interface conditions favor the precipitation of aragonite over high-Mg calcite.

Abstract:Microbialites are important reservoirs for oil and gas. The mineralization of organic matter in microbialites during early diagenesis can produce acidic fluids that dissolve carbonate grains, and can also result in an alkaline pore water that precipitates cement. The mineralization of organic matter in microbialites and its effect on microbialite reservoirs have not yet been studied in detail. In this study, quantitative statistical analysis of the two-dimensional spatial occurrence of pores and microbial fabrics, in situ geochemical analysis of specific components (microbial, transitional zone, and fine spar fabrics), and qualitative evaluation of the implications for microbialite reservoirs were undertaken on microbialites from Member IV of the Leikoupo Formation, Sichuan Basin, China. The quantitative statistical analysis shows that pores are spatially associated with microbial fabrics, but porosity has a poor correlation with microbial fabric content. In situ geochemical data indicate that microbialites with different porosities experienced different processes of organic matter mineralization. The processes of organic matter mineralization such as oxidation and nitrate reduction can provide more dissolution micropores than the process related with sulfate reduction, whereas the process of organic matter mineralization related with Fe–Mn oxide reduction results in cementation. Micropores created by organic matter mineralization can act as fluid channels for later dissolution and are important in the development of microbialite reservoirs.

Abstract:In Tengchong County, springs with wide physicochemical diversity provide a multitude of niches for extremophilic microorganisms. In this study, eight middle-low temperature spring sites along two continuous small streams with low water flow and slow speed in the fourth geothermal experience area of Rehai scenic spot were chosen, and geochemical characteristics and HTS of the 16S rRNA V4 region were used to analyze the prokaryotic community structure and diversity in the water and sediment of these sites. The effect of environmental factors on the microbial communities was explored via redundancy analysis (RDA). All sediment samples had higher alpha diversity values than the corresponding water samples. Twenty-five phyla were annotated; Euryarchaeota, Crenarchaeota, Aquificae, Thermotogae and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla, accounting for 95.31% of all prokaryotes, with relative abundances above 5%. Aquificae dominated in water samples, while Euryarchaeota dominated in sediment samples. RDA indicated that temperature was the main factor influencing the microbial communities in the two streams. The study expands the current understanding of the microbiology of Tengchong hot springs and provides a basis for further mining of hot spring microbial and functional gene resources.

Abstract:Cold seeps create diverse habitats in the deep sea and play an important role in the global carbon cycling. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and biogenic mineralization are essential carbon pathways of methane and carbon transformation in cold seeps, however, the effects of habitat heterogeneity on the processes are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the microbial communities and mineral assemblages at distinct habitats in the Haima cold seep and their relationships with environmental factors. These habitats were classified as methane seep site (MS), seep-free faunal habitat (FH), and control site (CS). Bacterial communities were significantly different among the three habitats. ANME-3 archaea, Sulfurovum bacteria, and mineralization-associated microbes (e.g., Campylobacterales) were detected in high relative abundances at ROV2. Mineralogical analysis revealed abundant calcite minerals at the seep site, indicating that authigenic carbonate minerals were formed at highly active seep. Multivariate statistical analysis demonstrated that the concentrations of SO 4 2– , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ were significantly correlated with the presence of calcite minerals and bacterial communities. These results suggested that AOM-accompanied authigenic carbonate formation is an important factor influencing the mineral assemblages in seep habitats. This finding improves our understanding of marine microbial carbon cycling.

Abstract:Minerals and microbes have coevolved throughout much of Earth history. They interact at the microscopic scale, but their effects are manifested macroscopically. Minerals support microbial growth by providing essential nutrients, and microbial activity alters mineral solubility and the oxidation state of certain constituent elements. Microbially mediated dissolution, precipitation, and transformation of minerals are either directly controlled by microorganisms or induced by biochemical reactions that usually take place outside the cell. All these reactions alter metal mobility, leading to the release or sequestration of heavy metals and radionuclides. These processes therefore have implications for ore formation and the bioremediation of contaminated sites.

A novel iron biomineralization on basaltic rocks from the Challenger Deep, southern Mariana Trench

Abstract:The habitability of the hadal zone is not well understood and how microbes survive and adapt to this extreme environment is still largely unknown. Here we report the discovery of microbial biofilm that experience extensive Fe-mineralization on the surface of rocks from the Challenger Deep in the southern Mariana Trench. We found microbial biofilms of abundant globules internally permineralized by acicular goethite. The EDS analyses, combined with SEM and TEM, show that the globules are enriched in carbon and phosphorus, potentially indicating their biological origin. Cross sections of globules reveal a bilayer structure consisting of an acicular nano-crystalline core and a colloidal envelope. Vibrational spectroscopy reveals that this colloidal envelope is composed of EPS (extracellular polymeric substances). This mineralization is completely different from Fe-mineralization induced by all other known Fe-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting previously unknown interactions between Fe and microorganisms in hadal settings. Our findings highlight the significance of Fe-mineralization and its contributions to the ecosystem in hadal environments.

Abstract:XRD analyzing on the surface sediments from the East Pacific found that there is an identical assemblage of quartz, albite and barite in most samples. Under SE an euhedral crystal structure appears in the most samples, which shows that they have been without considerable transpartatin and can be regarded as authigenic minerals in situ.Up to now, authigenic albite is mainly found in reservoir sandstone in great depth, with a crystalline temperature above 70 ℃. Barite with similar idiomorph has been reported in the Guaymas Basin, California, and been confirmed with hydrothermal origin. For these reasons, the authors believe that the authigenic quartz albite barite found in the surface sediment from East Pacific is a typical thermal water assemblage. This means that in the ocean basin far away from the mid ocean ridge there is thermal water activities with certain scale, which may have some impacts on the global environment, especially the long cycle climate changes.

Abstract:The properties of rocks can be greatly affected by seepage hydrocarbons in petroleum-related mud volcanoes. Among them, the color of sedimentary rocks can reflect the changes of sedimentary environment and weathering history. However, little is known about the microbial communities and their biogeochemical significance in these environments. In this study, contrasting rock samples were collected from the Aiqigou mud volcano on the southern margin of the Junggar Basin in Northwest China as guided by rock colors indicative of redox conditions. The physicochemical properties and mineral composition are similar under the same redox conditions. For example, the content of chlorite, muscovite, quartz, and total carbon were higher, and the total iron was lower under reduced conditions compared with oxidized environments. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed that different functional microorganisms may exist under different redox conditions; microbes in oxidized conditions have higher diversity. Statistical analysis and incubation experiments indicated that the microbial community structure is closely related to the content of iron which may be an important factor for color stratification of continental sedimentary rocks in the Aiqigou mud volcano. The interactions between organics and iron-bearing minerals mediated by microorganisms have also been hypothesized.

Abstract:Thermoacidophilic sulfate reduction, which remains a poorly studied process, was investigated in the present work. Radioisotope analysis with 35S-labeled sulfate was used to determine the rates of dissimilatory sulfate reduction in acidic thermal springs of Kamchatka, Russia. Sulfate reduction rates were found to vary from 0.054 to 12.9 nmol SO4/(cm3 day). The Oil Site spring (Uzon caldera, 60°C, pH 4.2) and Oreshek spring (Mutnovskii volcano, 91°C, pH 3.5) exhibited the highest activity of sulfate-reducing prokaryotes. Stable enrichment cultures reducing sulfate at pH and temperature values close to the environmental ones were obtained from these springs. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium Thermodesulfobium sp. 3127-1 was responsible for sulfate reduction in the enrichment from the Oil Site spring. A chemoorganoheterotrophic archaeon Vulcanisaeta sp. 3102-1 (phylum Crenarchaeota) was identified in the enrichment from Oreshek spring. Thus, dissimilatory sulfate reduction under thermoacidophilic conditions was demonstrated and the agents responsible for this process were revealed.

Abstract:A hot spring is a distinctive aquatic environment that provides an excellent system to investigate microorganisms and their function in elemental cycling processes. Previous studies of terrestrial hot springs have been mostly focused on the microbial community, one special phylum or category, or genes involved in a particular metabolic step, while little is known about the overall functional metabolic profiles of microorganisms inhabiting the terrestrial hot springs. Here, we analyzed the microbial community structure and their functional genes based on metagenomic sequencing of six selected hot springs with different temperature and pH conditions. We sequenced a total of 11 samples from six hot springs and constructed 162 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) with completeness above 70% and contamination lower than 10%. Crenarchaeota, Euryarchaeota and Aquificae were found to be the dominant phyla. Functional annotation revealed that bacteria encode versatile carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZYmes) for the degradation of complex polysaccharides, while archaea tend to assimilate C1 compounds through carbon fixation. Under nitrogen-deficient conditions, there were correspondingly fewer genes involved in nitrogen metabolism, while abundant and diverse set of genes participating in sulfur metabolism, particularly those associated with sulfide oxidation and thiosulfate disproportionation. In summary, archaea and bacteria residing in the hot springs display distinct carbon metabolism fate, while sharing the common energy preference through sulfur metabolism. Overall, this research contributes to a better comprehension of biogeochemistry of terrestrial hot springs.
Microbial communities and arsenic biogeochemistry at the outflow of an alkaline sulfide-rich hot spring

Abstract:AbstractAlkaline sulfide-rich hot springs provide a unique environment for microbial community and arsenic (As) biogeochemistry. In this study, a representative alkaline sulfide-rich hot spring, Zimeiquan in the Tengchong geothermal area, was chosen to study arsenic geochemistry and microbial community using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Over 0.26 million 16S rRNA sequence reads were obtained from 5-paired parallel water and sediment samples along the hot spring’s outflow channel. High ratios of As(V)/AsSum (total combined arsenate and arsenite concentrations) (0.59–0.78), coupled with high sulfide (up to 5.87 mg/L), were present in the hot spring’s pools, which suggested As(III) oxidation occurred. Along the outflow channel, AsSum increased from 5.45 to 13.86 μmol/L, and the combined sulfide and sulfate concentrations increased from 292.02 to 364.28 μmol/L. These increases were primarily attributed to thioarsenic transformation. Temperature, sulfide, As and dissolved oxygen significantly shaped the microbial communities between not only the pools and downstream samples, but also water and sediment samples. Results implied that the upstream Thermocrinis was responsible for the transformation of thioarsenic to As(III) and the downstream Thermus contributed to derived As(III) oxidation. This study improves our understanding of microbially-mediated As transformation in alkaline sulfide-rich hot springs.

Abstract:Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of nodules and crusts support their biogenic origin. Within the nodules, bacteria with surface S-layers are arranged on biofilm-like structures, around which Mn deposition starts. In crusts, coccoliths represent the dominant biologically formed structures that act as bio-seeds for an initial Mn deposition. In contrast, hydrothermal vents have apparently an abiogenic origin; however, their minerals are biogenically transformed by bacteria. In turn, strategies can now be developed for biotechnological enrichment as well as selective dissolution of metals from such concretions. We are convinced that the recent discoveries will considerably contribute to our understanding of the participation of organic matrices in the enrichment of those metals and will provide the basis for feasibility studies for biotechnological applications.
Formation and preservation of Eocene lacustrine microbialites in the western Qaidam Basin (northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China): Petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical constraints

Abstract:Studying the lacustrine microbialites in the Qaidam Basin may provide clues to the occurrence and mineralization processes of microbial communities in extremely harsh terrestrial environments. In the Eocene lacustrine systems of the Qaidam Basin, thick thrombolites (~0.4 to 1 m thick) generally formed in near-shore settings with rare to plentiful terrigenous admixtures and are characterized by four different clotted structures (i.e., maze-like, cortoid-like, tightly bound, and aggregated). In contrast, the small-scale stromatolitic, thrombolitic, and composite clotted-laminated microbialites (cm level) exhibit domical, columnar, and stratiform shapes, likely indicating that they developed in very shallow settings (e.g., a lagoon). The early lithification of the outer crusts and the internally laminated and clotted textures facilitated the preservation of the microbialites. The laminated and clotted textures of the Eocene microbialites analyzed in this study were composed of crypto- to micro-crystalline (mimetic) dolomite, which likely formed during the early mineralization process. This was likely caused by the strong evaporative lacustrine conditions on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau during the Eocene-Oligocene climate transition. The microbial mineralization process in dolomite-supersaturated pore fluids may also have contributed to early dolomitization. In contrast, the medium to coarsely crystalline components of the microbialites are composed of calcite minerals, implying that these components experienced cementation/recrystallization during diagenesis. In addition, large quantities of authigenic sulfate (celestite-barite) and sulfide (framboidal pyrite) minerals are exclusively distributed within the mimetically-dolomitized, laminated and clotted microbial structures. It is inferred that the saline lake conditions and the mineral dissolution (both carbonate and terrigenous particles) contributed to the SrSO4- and BaSO4-supersaturated fluid conditions and enabled the crystallization of celestite-barite. The development of Eocene lacustrine microbialites on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau provides a case for comparison with widely-distributed records of lake microbial carbonates, and the microstructural characteristics and analytical tools used in this study may offer a new perspective to explore the complex mineralization processes of microbialites.

Abstract:Clay minerals are ubiquitous on epigeosphere, especially in soils and sediments where microbes thrive. The clay-microbe interactions are common in these geological media and greatly contribute to accelerating the mineral transformation process, e.g. the illitization of nontronite (a Fe-rich smectite) catalyzed by microbes under anoxic atmosphere in 2 weeks. However, few has considered montmorillonite, a Fe-poor smectite more typical in natural environments than nontronite. This study therefore focuses on the interaction between montmorillonite and bacteria under conditions relevant to those in natural soils and sediments.
Microbial-induced Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Mineralization: Investigating the Bio-Mineralization Chemistry Process and the Potential of Storage in Sandstone Reservoir

Abstract:Mineralization represents a crucial technological approach for carbon sequestration. In this study, a strain ZL-03 with carbon mineralization ability was screened and identified as Bacillus mucilaginosus Krassilnikov by 16SrDNA. The growth morphology, physicochemical properties, and metabolic products of the strain under CO2 stress were comprehensively investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, employing the highly precise 13CO2 isotope, the chemical pathway of microbial extracellular induction for CO2 sequestration and biomineralization was elucidated. The results indicate that strain ZL-03 exhibits increased carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity and secretes extracellular organic matrix containing electron-donating functional groups such as -OH and -COOH under CO2 stress. The study reveals two pathways for strain ZL-03's extracellular mineralization of CO2:the secretion of CA promotes the dissolution and ionization of CO2 into HCO3 , which then combines with Ca2+ to form minerals; the microbial secretion of extracellular organic matrix complexes with Ca2+ in the solution to form a mineralization matrix, and CO2 reacts with the mineralization matrix (metal complex) to generate amorphous calcium carbonate (CaCO3 & sdot;H2O). Moreover, the research results reveal that the selected microorganisms can reduce reservoir permeability by 63.8%. The findings provide valuable insights into the growth behavior, physicochemical characteristics, and intricate metabolic pathways of the bacterial under CO2 stress conditions. The research significantly contributes to the understanding and advancement of microbial-mediated biomineralization processes for efficient CO2 mineralization, with implications for environmental sustainability and carbon utilization strategies.
Metagenomic Features Characterized with Microbial Iron Oxidoreduction and Mineral Interaction in Southwest Indian Ridge

Abstract:The Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is one of the typical representatives of deep-sea ultraslow-spreading ridges, and has increasingly become a hot spot of studying subsurface geological activities and deep-sea mining management. However, the understanding of microbial activities is still limited on active hydrothermal vent chimneys in SWIR. In this study, samples from an active black smoker and a diffuse vent located in the Longqi hydrothermal region were collected for deep metagenomic sequencing, which yielded approximately 290 GB clean data and 295 mid-to-high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). Sulfur oxidation conducted by a variety of Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Campylobacterota was presumed to be the major energy source for chemosynthesis in Longqi hydrothermal vents. Diverse iron-related microorganisms were recovered, including iron-oxidizing Zetaproteobacteria, iron-reducing Deferrisoma, and magnetotactic bacterium. Twenty-two bacterial MAGs from 12 uncultured phyla harbored iron oxidase Cyc2 homologs and enzymes for organic carbon degradation, indicated novel chemolithoheterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria that affected iron biogeochemistry in hydrothermal vents. Meanwhile, potential interactions between microbial communities and chimney minerals were emphasized as enriched metabolic potential of siderophore transportation, and extracellular electron transfer functioned by multi-heme proteins was discovered. Composition of chimney minerals probably affected microbial iron metabolic potential, as pyrrhotite might provide more available iron for microbial communities. Collectively, this study provides novel insights into microbial activities and potential mineral-microorganism interactions in hydrothermal vents. IMPORTANCE Microbial activities and interactions with minerals and venting fluid in active hydrothermal vents remain unclear in the ultraslow-spreading SWIR (Southwest Indian Ridge). Understanding about how minerals influence microbial metabolism is currently limited given the obstacles in cultivating microorganisms with sulfur or iron oxidoreduction functions. Here, comprehensive descriptions on microbial composition and metabolic profile on 2 hydrothermal vents in SWIR were obtained based on cultivation-free metagenome sequencing. In particular, autotrophic sulfur oxidation supported by minerals was presumed, emphasizing the role of chimney minerals in supporting chemosynthesis. Presence of novel heterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria was also indicated, suggesting overlooked biogeochemical pathways directed by microorganisms that connected sulfide mineral dissolution and organic carbon degradation in hydrothermal vents. Our findings offer novel insights into microbial function and biotic interactions on minerals in ultraslow-spreading ridges.

Abstract:The dissolution of the metal sulfides in polymetallic mines not only produces acid mining drainage (AMD),but also releases the abundant heavy metals into the surroundings,which results in serious environmental contamination.Existing studies indicate that various microorganisms play important roles in the dissolution of minerals and in the release,transportation,precipitation and enrichment of heavy metals.In this papers,the new approaches on the mechanisms of microbiologically mediated dissolution of minerals,the interfacial processes between microbes and minerals,and the function of biofilms are summarized.The features of microbes community and species phylogeny are discussed.Furthermore,the microbiogeochemical cycles of the heavy metals released by the microbiological dissolution of metal sulfides and the influence of the heavy metals on the microbiological oxidation are reviewed.Finally,the potential applications of microorganisms in the remediation of contaminated environments are also addressed.
Insights into coupling between in-situ coalbed water geochemical signatures and microbial communities

Abstract:The degradation of coal into CH4 by microorganisms is a multi-stage process involving a variety of bacteria and archaea. However, little understood about the coupling between in-situ coalbed water geochemical signature and microbial communities involved in different degradation processes. Here, the relation is made between the geochemical signature of the in-situ coalbed water (pH, anions, light metal cations and trace metal elements) and the microbial community (Miquan area, southern Junggar Basin, China). The results show that when the hydrolytic bacteria are the dominant group, they cause an increase in the concentration of certain trace elements in the coalbed water, and different types of hydrolytic bacteria dissolve different types of trace metal elements. Azoarcus and Pseudomonas together dissolve 27 elements including Tl, Sm and Lu. Five trace elements including Nb and V dissolved by Luteolibacter. Even though different hydrolytic bacteria require different Sr concentrations, there is no doubt that hydrolytic bacteria are enriched in Sr-rich environments. As far as methanogenic archaea concerned, Methanobacterium and Methanocorpusculum, which utilize reduced CO2 as a methanogenic pathway, are unaffected by trace metal elements. Although the anions SO42−, NO3− and F− have opposite promoting and inhibiting effects on Methanocorpusculum and Methanobacterium, they do not affect the methanogenic pathway of the microorganisms. Methanothrix increases in relative abundance in low Sr and high Mo concentration and produces CH4 in an acetic acid fermentation pathway. Higher concentrations of the trace elements Cs and Mn increased the relative abundance of Methanolobus, which uses methyl fermentation as the methanogenic pathway. Trace metal elements interactions with bacteria in situ coalbed water and the influence on fluctuations in methanogenic pathways of archaea outweigh other geochemical signatures (pH, anions and light metal cations). This discovery is a significant contribution to the understanding of the interactions between microorganisms and trace metal elements involved in different methanogenic processes in situ coalbed water, and lays the foundation for research on microbial coalbed gas.
