Abstract:We aim at deriving accurate atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances of 19 barium (Ba) stars, including both strong and mild Ba stars, based on the high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution Echelle spectra obtained from the 2.16 m telescope at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The chemical abundances of the sample stars were obtained from an LTE, plane-parallel and line-blanketed atmospheric model by inputting the atmospheric parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicity and microturbulent velocity) and equivalent widths of stellar absorption lines. These samples of Ba stars are giants indicated by atmospheric parameters, metallicities and kinematic analysis about UVW velocity. Chemical abundances of 17 elements were obtained for these Ba stars. Their light elements (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn and Ni) are similar to the solar abundances. Our samples of Ba stars show obvious overabundances of neutron-capture (n-capture) process elements relative to the Sun. Their median abundances of [Ba/Fe], [La/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] are 0.54, 0.65 and 0.40, respectively. The YI and ZrI abundances are lower than Ba, La and Eu, but higher than the light elements for the strong Ba stars and similar to the iron-peak elements for the mild stars. There exists a positive correlation between Ba intensity and [Ba/Fe]. For the n-capture elements (Y, Zr, Ba, La), there is an anti-correlation between their [X/Fe] and [Fe/H]. We identify nine of our sample stars as strong Ba stars with [Ba/Fe]>0.6 where seven of them have Ba intensity Ba=2-5, one has Ba=1.5 and another one has Ba=1.0. The remaining ten stars are classified as mild Ba stars with 0.17<[Ba/Fe]<0.54.

Abstract:We obtain abundances of alpha, iron peak and neutron capture (n-capture) process elements in four Ba stars HD 26886, HD 27271, HD 50082 and HD 98839 based on high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra. We find that all of these Ba stars are disk stars. Their alpha and iron peak elements are similar to the solar abundances. The n-capture process elements are overabundant relative to the Sun. In particular, the second peak slow neutron capture process (s-process) elements, Ba and La, are higher than the first peak s-process elements, Y and Zr. Analyzing the abundances of four sample stars, the heavy-element abundances of the strong Ba star HD 50082 are higher than those of other three mild Ba stars. The stellar mass of the strong Ba star HD 50082 is 1.32 M-. (+0.28, -0.22 M-.), which is consistent with the average mass of strong Ba stars (1.5 M-.). For mild Ba star HD 27271, we derive 1.90 M-. (+0.25, -0.20 M-.), consistent with the average mass of mild Ba stars (1.9 M-., with 0.6 M-. white dwarf companion). For mild Ba star HD 26886, the derived 2.78 M-. (+0.75, -0.78 M-.) is consistent with the average 2.3 M-. of mild Ba stars with 0.67 M-. companion white dwarfs within the errors. Mass of mild Ba star HD 98839 is high to 3.62 M-., which inspires more thoughts on the formation of Ba star phenomenon. Using our angular momentum conservation theoretical model of wind accretion of Ba binary systems, we obtain the theoretical heavy-element abundances of Ba stars that best fit our data. The results show that the observed abundances of the typical strong Ba star HD 50082 and the typical mild Ba star HD 27271 are consistent with the theoretical results very well. This suggests that their heavy-element abundances were caused by accreting the ejecta of AGB stars, the progenitors of the present white dwarf companions, through stellar wind. However, wind accretion scenario cannot explain the observed abundance pattern of the mild Ba star HD 26886 with shorter orbital period (P = 1263.2 d). The mild Ba star HD 98839 with high mass (up to 3.62 M-.) and very long orbital period (P > 11 000 d) may be either a star with the heavy elements enriched by itself or a "true Ba" star.

Abstract:In this paper we present an homogeneous analysis of photospheric abundances based on high-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 182 barium stars and candidates. We determined atmospheric parameters, spectroscopic distances, stellar masses, ages, luminosities and scale height, radial velocities, abundances of the Na, Al, $alpha$-elements, iron-peak elements, and s-process elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd. We employed the local-thermodynamic-equilibrium model atmospheres of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code {\sc moog}. We found that the metallicities, the temperatures and the surface gravities for barium stars can not be represented by a single gaussian distribution. The abundances of $alpha$-elements and iron peak elements are similar to those of field giants with the same metallicity. Sodium presents some degree of enrichment in more evolved stars that could be attributed to the NeNa cycle. As expected, the barium stars show overabundance of the elements created by the s-process. By measuring the mean heavy-element abundance pattern as given by the ratio [s/Fe], we found that the barium stars present several degrees of enrichment. We also obtained the [hs/ls] ratio by measuring the photospheric abundances of the Ba-peak and the Zr-peak elements. Our results indicated that the [s/Fe] and the [hs/ls] ratios are strongly anti-correlated with the metallicity. Our kinematical analysis showed that 90% of the barium stars belong to the thin disk population. Based on their luminosities, none of the barium stars are luminous enough to be an AGB star, nor to become self-enriched in the s-process elements. Finally, we determined that the barium stars also follow an age-metallicity relation.

Abstract:Based on the high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra, we derived the chemical abundances of 20 elements for 20 barium (Ba-) stars. For the first time, the detailed abundances of four sample stars, namely HD 92482, HD 150430, HD 151101 and HD 177304 have been analyzed. Additionally, Ba element abundance has been measured using high resolution spectra for the first time in six of the other 16 sample stars. Based on the [s/Fe] ratios, the Ba-unknown star HD 115927 can be classified as a strong Ba-star, while the Ba-likely star HD 160538 can be categorized into a mild Ba-star. Consequently, our sample comprises three strong and 17 mild Ba-stars. The light odd-Z metal elements and Fe-peak elements exhibit near-solar abundances. The [{\alpha}/Fe] ratios demonstrate decreasing trends with increasing metallicity. Moreover, the abundances of n-capture elements show significant enhancements in different degrees. Using a threshold of the signed distances to the solar r-process abundance pattern ds = 0.6, we find that all of our sample stars are normal Ba-stars, indicating that the enhancements of s-process elements should be attributed to material transfer from their companions. We compare the observed n-capture patterns of sample stars with the FRUITY models, and estimate the mass of the Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch stars that previously contaminated the Ba-stars. The models with low masses can successfully explain the observations. From a kinematic point of view, we note that most of our sample stars are linked with the thin disk, while HD 130255 may be associated with the thick disk.

Abstract:Barium (Ba) stars are polluted by material enriched in the slow neutron capture (s-process) elements synthesised in the interior of their former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion star, which is now a white dwarf. We compare individual Ba star abundance patterns to AGB nucleosynthesis models to verify if the AGB model mass is compatible with independently derived AGB mass. We selected a sample of 28 Ba stars for which both self-consistent spectroscopic observation and analysis are available and stellar mass determinations, via positioning the star on the HR diagram and comparing with evolutionary tracks. For this sample stars we considered both previously and recently derived elemental abundances. Then, we performed a detailed comparison of these s-process elemental abundances to different AGB nucleosynthesis models from the Monash and the FRUITY theoretical data sets. We simplified the binary mass transfer by calculating dilution factors to match the [Ce/Fe] value of each star when using different AGB models, and we then compared the diluted model abundances to the complete Ba-star abundance pattern. Our comparison confirms that low mass, non-rotating AGB stellar models with 13C as the main neutron source are the polluters of the vast majority of the considered Ba stars. Out of the 28 stars, in 21 cases the models are in good agreement with both the determined abundances and the independently derived AGB mass, although in 16 cases higher observed abundances of Nb, Ru, Mo and/or Nd, Sm than predicted. For 3 stars we obtain a match to the abundances only by considering models with masses lower than those independently determined. Finally, 4 stars show much higher first s-process peak abundance values than the model predictions, which may represent the signature of a physical and/or nucleosynthetic process that is not represented in the set of models considered here.

Abstract:High signal to noise, high resolution spectra were obtained for a sample of normal, mild barium, and barium giants. Atmospheric parameters were determined from the FeI and FeII lines. Abundances for Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd, were determined from equivalent widths and model atmospheres in a differential analysis, with the red giant Eps Vir as the standard star. The different levels of s-process overabundances of barium and mild barium stars were earlier suggested to be related to the stellar metallicity. Contrary to this suggestion, we found in this work no evidence of barium and mild barium to having different range in metallicity. However, comparing the ratio of abundances of heavy to light s-process elements, we found some evidence that they do not share the same neutron exposure parameter. The exact mechanism controlling this difference is still not clear. As a by-product of this analysis we identify two normal red giants misclassified as mild barium stars. The relevance of this finding is discussed. Concerning the suggested nucleosynthetic effects possibly related to the s-process, for elements like Cu, Mn, V and Sc, we found no evidence for an anomalous behavior in any of the s-process enriched stars analyzed here. However, further work is still needed since a clear [Cu/Fe] vs. [Ba/H] anticorrelation exists for other s-process enriched objects.

Abstract:Barium (Ba) stars help to verify asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star nucleosynthesis models since they experienced pollution from an AGB binary companion and thus their spectra carry the signatures of the slow neutron capture process (s process). For 180 Ba stars, we searched for AGB stellar models that match the observed abundance patterns. We employed three machine learning algorithms as classifiers: a Random Forest method, developed for this work, and the two classifiers used in our previous study. We studied the statistical behaviour of the s-process elements in the observational sample to investigate if the AGB models systematically under- or overpredict the abundances observed in the Ba stars and show the results in the form of violin plots of the residuals between spectroscopic abundances and model predictions. We find a significant trend in the residuals that implies an underproduction of the elements Nb, Mo, and Ru in the models relative to the observations. This may originate from a process (e.g. the intermediate neutron-capture process, i process) at the metallicity of the Ba stars not yet included in the AGB models. Correlations are found between the residuals of these elements, suggesting a common origin for the deviations. In addition, there is a weak metallicity dependence of their residuals. The s-process temperatures derived with the [Zr/Fe] - [Nb/Fe] thermometer have an unrealistic value for the majority of our stars. The most likely explanation is that at least a fraction of these elements are not produced in a steady-state s process, and instead may be due to processes not included in the AGB models. The mass distribution of the identified models confirms that our sample of Ba stars was polluted by low-mass AGB stars. Most of the matching AGB models require low accreted mass, but a few systems with high accreted mass are needed to explain the observations. (abridged)

Abstract:We aim to analyse the abundance pattern of 169 Barium (Ba) stars, using machine learning techniques and the AGB final surface abundances predicted by Fruity and Monash stellar models. We developed machine learning algorithms that use the abundance pattern of Ba stars as input to classify the initial mass and metallicity of its companion star using stellar model predictions. We use two algorithms: the first exploits neural networks to recognise patterns and the second is a nearest-neighbour algorithm, which focuses on finding the AGB model that predicts final surface abundances closest to the observed Ba star values. In the second algorithm we include the error bars and observational uncertainties to find the best fit model. The classification process is based on the abundances of Fe, Rb, Sr, Zr, Ru, Nd, Ce, Sm, and Eu. We selected these elements by systematically removing s-process elements from our AGB model abundance distributions, and identifying those whose removal has the biggest positive effect on the classification. We excluded Nb, Y, Mo, and La. Our final classification combines the output of both algorithms to identify for each Ba star companion an initial mass and metallicity range. With our analysis tools we identify the main properties for 166 of the 169 Ba stars in the stellar sample. The classifications based on both stellar sets of AGB final abundances show similar distributions, with an average initial mass of M = 2.23 MSun and 2.34 MSun and an average [Fe/H] = -0.21 and -0.11, respectively. We investigated why the removal of Nb, Y, Mo, and La improves our classification and identified 43 stars for which the exclusion had the biggest effect. We show that these stars have statistically significant different abundances for these elements compared to the other Ba stars in our sample. We discuss the possible reasons for these differences in the abundance patterns.

Abstract:We determined the atmospheric parameters and abundance pattern for a sample of metal-rich barium stars. We used high-resolution optical spectroscopy. Atmospheric parameters and abundances were determined using the local thermodynamic equilibrium atmosphere models of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code MOOG. We show that the stars have enhancement factors, [s/Fe], from 0.25 to 1.16. Their abundance pattern of the Na, Al, alpha-elements, and iron group elements as well as their kinematical properties are similar to the characteristics of the other metal-rich and super metal-rich stars already analyzed. We conclude that metal-rich barium stars do not belong to the bulge population. We also show that metal-rich barium stars are useful targets for probing the s-process enrichment in high-metallicity environments.

Abstract:Based on the high-resolution, high signal-to-noise-ratio spectra from the Keck/HIRES, we have analyzed the barium abundances of 602 stars. The parameter space of our sample are in the range of 4700 < < 6100 K, −0.1 < [Fe/H] < 0.6 dex, and 2 < log g < 5 dex. It is found that the nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects are large for barium, and the barium abundances can be underestimated by up to 0.2 dex compared to the the local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis for lines at 5853 and 6141 Å. In addition, the average barium abundances of the high- and low-α stars are −0.10 and 0.00 dex, respectively, and higher [Ba/Fe] corresponds to a lower [Mg/Fe] ratio. We note that there are 18 Ba-rich stars (with [Ba/Fe] > 0.3 in NLTE), which contains six dwarfs and 12 giants. The Ba-rich objects make up around 3% in our sample.

Abstract:The abundances of the slow neutron-capture (s-) process elements observed in barium stars can be explained by considering mass transfer in a binary system from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star onto a smaller mass and less evolved binary companion star. Based on the abundances of neutron-capture elements the barium stars are broadly divided into two categories, "strong" and "mild" barium stars. However, an understanding of the role of the characteristic properties of the companion AGBs on the formation of the different types of barium stars is still lacking. This work focuses on investigating the role of the mass of the companion AGB stars in this context. In a recent high-resolution spectroscopic study, we studied in detail the chemical composition of a few barium stars that we have identified. In order to understand the nature and the mass of the companion stars, we first estimated the mass of these objects and then used a parametric model-based analysis to derive the masses of the primary companion stars. The calculation is extended to 205 barium stars taken from literature. An analysis of the mass distribution revealed that both the strong and the mild barium stars occupy the same range of masses. However, their companion AGB stars' mass distributions peak at two different values 2.5 M$_{\odot}$ and 3.7 M$_{\odot}$, for the strong and the mild barium stars respectively. This provides clear evidence that the formation of mild and strong Ba stars is greatly influenced by the initial masses of the companion AGB stars. It remains, however, to be seen the possible impact of other factors such as orbital period and metallicity on the formation scenarios of barium stars.

For a large number (180) of Ba stars, we searched for AGB stellar models that match the observed abundance patterns. We aim to uncover any systematic deviations of the sample abundances from the predictions of the nucleosynthesis models. We employed three machine learning algorithms as classifiers: a Random Forest method, developed for this work, and the two classifiers used in our previous study. Compared to that work, we also expanded our observational sample with 11 Ba stars available in the supersolar metallicity range. We studied the statistical behaviour of the different $s$-process elements in the observational sample to investigate if the AGB models systematically under- or overpredict the abundances observed in the Ba stars and show the results in the form of violin plots of the residuals between spectroscopic abundances and model predictions. We inspected the correlations between the observed Fe/H the $s$-process elemental abundances, and the residuals. We employed the Zr/Fe and Nb/Fe abundances as a thermometer to constrain the operational temperature that rules the production of these elements in the sample stars, assuming a steady-state $s$ process. We also investigated the mass distribution of the identified polluter AGB stars and the behaviour of the delta parameter, which describes the fraction of accreted AGB material relative to the Ba star envelope. We find a significant trend in the residuals that implies an underproduction of the elements just after the first $s$-process peak (Nb, Mo, and Ru) in the models relative to the observations. This may originate from a neutron-capture process (e.g. the intermediate neutron-capture process, $i$ process) not yet included in the AGB models of metallicity from solar to roughly 1/5 solar, corresponding to the range of the Ba stars. Correlations are found between the residuals of these peculiar elements, suggesting a common origin for the deviations from the models. In addition, there is a weak metallicity dependence of the residuals of these elements. The $s$-process temperatures derived with the Zr/Fe Nb/Fe thermometer have an unrealistic value for the majority of our stars. The most likely explanation is that at least a fraction of these elements are not produced in a steady-state $s$ process, and instead may be due to processes not included in the AGB models. Abstract:Barium (Ba) stars are chemically peculiar stars that show enhanced surface abundances of heavy elements produced by the slow-neutron-capture process, the so-called s-process. These stars are not sufficiently evolved to undergo the s-process in their interiors, so they are considered products of binary interactions. Ba stars form when a former Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) companion, which is now a white dwarf, pollutes them with s-process-rich material through mass transfer. This paper presents a detailed chemical characterization of two newly discovered Ba giants. Our main goal is to confirm their status as extrinsic s-process stars and explore potential binarity and white dwarf companions. We obtained high-resolution spectra with UVES on the Very Large Telescope to determine the chemical properties of the targets. We perform line-by-line analyses and measure 22 elements with an internal precision up to 0.04 dex. The binary nature of the targets is investigated through radial velocity variability and spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that both targets are enhanced in all the measured s-process elements, classifying our targets as Ba giants. This is the first time they are classified as such in the literature. Additionally, both stars present a mild enhancement in Eu, but less than in pure s-process elements, suggesting that the sources that polluted them were pure s-process sources. Finally, we confirmed that the two targets are RV variable and likely binary systems. The abundances in these two newly discovered polluted binaries align with classical Ba giants, providing observational constraints to better understand the s-process in AGB stars.

Barium Even-to-odd Isotope Abundance Ratios in Thick Disk and Thin Disk Stars

Abstract:We present the Ba even-to-odd isotope abundance ratios in 25 cool dwarf stars with the metallicity [Fe/H] ranging between 0.25 and -1.35. Our method takes advantage of the hyperfine structure (HFS) affecting the Ba II resonance line of the odd isotopes. The fractional abundance of the odd isotopes of Ba is derived from a requirement that Ba abundances from the resonance line. 4554 and subordinate lines. 5853 and. 6496 must be equal. The results are based on NLTE line formation and analysis of high resolution (R similar to 60 000) high signal-to-noise (S/N = 200) observed spectra. We find that the fraction of the odd isotopes of Ba grows toward the lower Ba abundance (or metallicity) and the mean value in the thick disk stars equals 33 +/- 4%. This indicates the higher contribution of the r-process to barium in the thick disk stars compared to the solar system matter. The obtained fraction increases with the [Eu/Ba] abundance ratio growth in agreement with expectations. A significant fraction of the even isotopes of Ba found in old Galactic stars (the thick disk stars), similar to 67%, is in contrast to the prediction of the "classical" model of the s-process and favors the value predicted by the "stellar" models of Arlandini et al. (1999) and Travaglio et al. (1999).

Abstract:Abstract Based on high resolution, high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio spectra from Keck/HIRES, we have determined abundances of 20 elements for 18 Ba candidates. The parameter space of these stars is in the range of 4880 ≤ T eff ≤ 6050 K, 2.56 ≤ log g ≤ 4.53 dex and − 0.27 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0.09 dex. It is found that four of them can be identified as Ba stars with [s/Fe] > 0.25 dex (s: Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce and Nd), and three of them are newly discovered, which include two Ba giants (HD 16178 and HD 22233) and one Ba subgiant (HD 2946). Our results show that the abundances of α , odd and iron-peak elements (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Mn, Ni and Cu) for our program stars are similar to those of the thin disk, while the distribution of [hs/ls] (hs: Ba, La, Ce and Nd, ls: Sr, Y and Zr) ratios of our Ba stars is similar to those of the known Ba objects. None of the four Ba stars show clear enhancement in carbon including the known CH subgiant HD 4395. It is found that three of the Ba stars present clear evidence of hosting stellar or sub-stellar companions from the radial velocity data.

Two barium stars in the Galactic bulge

Abstract:Barium stars conserve important information on the s-process and the third dredge-up in intermediate mass stars. Their discovery in various environments is therefore of great help to test nucleosynthesis and mixing models. Our aim is to analyse two stars with a very strong barium line detected in a large survey of red giants in the Galactic bulge. Abundance analysis was done comparing synthetic model spectra based on the COMARCS code with our medium resolution spectra. Abundances of Ba, La, Y, and Fe were determined. Beside the two main targets, the analysis was also applied to two comparison stars. We confirm that both stars are barium stars. They are the first ones of this kind identified in the Galactic bulge. Their barium excesses are among the largest values found up to now. The elemental abundances are compared with current nucleosynthesis and mixing models. Furthermore, we estimate a frequency of barium stars in the Galactic bulge of about 1%, which is identical to the value for disc stars.

Abstract:Barium stars are peculiar stars with enhanced slow neutron capture process (s-process) elements. Abundance analysis of them aids in better understanding the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. In this paper, we introduce a data-driven method named the memory-enhanced adaptive spectral network (MEASNet) to search for barium candidates in the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) low-resolution survey (LRS) and estimate the abundance of five s-process elements: Sr, Y, Ba, Ce, and Nd. MEASNet, trained using spectra from common stars in both LAMOST and the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES survey, showcases notable performance: for the classification task, precision = 98.22% and recall = 94.12%; in prediction, the mean absolute error for the seven elements range between 0.07 and 0.15 dex. After training, we apply the model to 4,083,003 stellar spectra from LAMOST DR10 LRS, successfully identifying 1,803,670 spectra of barium candidates ([Ba/Fe] ≥ 0.25 dex) along with their five s-process elemental abundances. The catalog enlarges the sample size, providing a wealth of data for further statistical analysis of the formation and evolution of barium stars. Meanwhile, this work highlights the potential value of MEASNet in star classification and abundance estimation, offering a strong reference for future data-driven models.

Abstract:Barium stars are one of the important probes to understand the origin and evolution of slow neutron-capture process elements in the Galaxy. These are extrinsic stars, where the observed s-process element abundances are believed to have an origin in the now invisible companions that produced these elements at their Asymptotic Giant Branch phase of evolution. We have attempted to understand the s-process nucleosynthesis, as well as the physical properties of the companion stars through a detailed comparison of observed elemental abundances of 10 barium stars with the predictions from AGB nucleosynthesis models, FRUITY. For these stars, we have presented estimates of abundances of several elements, C, N, O, Na, Al, $\alpha$-elements, Fe-peak elements and neutron-capture elements Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu. The abundance estimates are based on high resolution spectral analysis. Observations of Rb in four of these stars have allowed us to put a limit to the mass of the companion AGB stars. Our analysis clearly shows that the former companions responsible for the surface abundance peculiarities of these stars are low-mass AGB stars. Kinematic analysis have shown the stars to be members of Galactic disk population.

Abstract:Ba-enhanced stars are interesting probes of stellar astrophysics and Galactic formation history. In this work, we investigate the chemistry and kinematics of a large sample of Ba-enhanced ([Ba/Fe]>1.0) dwarf and subgiant stars with 5000 < T eff < 6700 K from LAMOST. We find that both stellar internal evolution processes and external mass exchange due to binary evolution are responsible for the origins of the Ba enhancement of our sample stars. About one third of them exhibit C and N enhancement and an ultraviolet brightness excess, indicating they are products of binary evolution. The remaining Ba-enhanced stars with normal C and N abundances are mostly warm stars with T eff > 6000 K. They are likely the consequences of stellar internal element transport processes, but they show very different element patterns to hotter Am/Fm stars. Our results reveal a substantially lack of high-[α/Fe], Ba-enhanced stars in the [Fe/H]–[α/Fe] plane, which we dub as a "high-[α/Fe] desert". We suggest it is due to a lower efficiency for producing Ba-enhanced stars by low-mass asymptotic giant branch progenitors in binary systems. Our results call for detailed modeling of these Ba-enhanced stellar peculiarities, in the context of both stellar internal element transport and external mass accretion.
