Abstract:This paper investigates the driving forces, emission trends and reduction potential of China's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions based on a provincial panel data set covering the years 1995 to 2009. A series of static and dynamic panel data models are estimated, and then an optimal forecasting model selected by out-of-sample criteria is used to forecast the emission trend and reduction potential up to 2020. The estimation results show that economic development, technology progress and industry structure are the most important factors affecting China's CO2 emissions, while the impacts of energy consumption structure, trade openness and urbanization level are negligible. The inverted U-shaped relationship between per capita CO2 emissions and economic development level is not strongly supported by the estimation results. The impact of capital adjustment speed is significant. Scenario simulations further show that per capita and aggregate CO2 emissions of China will increase continuously up to 2020 under any of the three scenarios developed in this study, but the reduction potential is large.

Abstract:With the deepening of the concept of sustainable development, a green economy has become the primary goal of urban development. Therefore, to improve the sustainability and far-reaching development of the urban economy, this work first discusses the concept of sustainable development. Second, the concept of a "green economy" is discussed. Lastly, based on the concept of green economic development, this work studies carbon emissions in Hebei Province, China, and discusses the impact of carbon emissions on the urban economy. On this basis, the impact of carbon intensity and CO2 emissions on economic growth is analyzed by establishing an endogenous growth model and state-space model, thereby revealing the importance of carbon emissions to the economic development of Hebei Province. In the analysis process, sensitivity analysis and a robustness test are also used to verify the reliability and robustness of the model results. Finally, this work summarizes the research conclusions and puts forward relevant policy suggestions, which provide a reference for developing a green economy in Hebei Province. The results reveal that from 1999 to 2020, the average output elasticity of labor, capital, and CO2 in Hebei Province are 0.4002, 0.3057, and 0.2941, respectively. This shows that carbon emissions are essential to Hebei's economic growth. In other words, Hebei's economic development mainly depends on enterprises with high carbon emissions. Additionally, in the optimistic case, Hebei's potential output growth rate will show a downward trend, but will soon rise. This indicates that even under strict carbon emission control, Hebei's economic growth rate will still pick up based on the support of high-tech. This work not only provides a reference for the development of Hebei's green economic system, but also contributes to the sustainable development of the urban economy in the future.

Abstract:An extended Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology (STIRPAT) model, incorporating factors that drive carbon emissions, is built from the regional perspective. A spatial Durbin model is applied to investigate the factors, including population, urbanization level, economic development, energy intensity, industrial structure, energy consumption structure, energy price, and openness, that impact both the scale and intensity of carbon emissions. After performing the model, we find that the revealed negative and significant impact of spatial-lagged variables suggests that the carbon emissions among regions are highly correlated. Therefore, the empirical results suggest that the provinces are doing an exemplary job of lowering carbon emissions. The driving factors, with the exception of energy prices, significantly impact carbon emissions both directly and indirectly. We, thus, argue that spatial correlation, endogeneity and externality should be taken into account in formulating polices that seek to reduce carbon emissions in China. Carbon emissions will not be met by controlling economic development, but by energy consumption and low-carbon path.

Abstract:Based on the autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) model, this paper conducts an empirical study on the relationship between carbon emissions, economic growth, urbanization, and foreign trade in China from 1971 to 2020. The results show that when carbon emissions, economic growth, and urbanization are used as explained variables, there is a long-term cointegration relationship with other variables. In the long-term relationship, urbanization has a significant positive effect on economic growth and carbon emissions, with coefficients of 2.2172 and 0.2921, respectively. The long-term elasticity coefficient of economic growth to urbanization is 0.4864, passing the 1% significance test. In the short-term relationship, economic growth and carbon emissions, urbanization and carbon emissions, and economic growth and urbanization are all mutually reinforcing relationships, and foreign trade will suppress carbon emissions in the short term. Therefore, policymakers should transform the urbanization model and develop a green economy to achieve environmental sustainability.

Seasonal Contributions and Influencing Factors of Urban Carbon Emission Intensity: A Case Study of Tianjin, China

Abstract:The escalating concern over global warming has garnered significant international attention, with carbon emission intensity emerging as a crucial barrier to sustainable economic development across various regions. While previous studies have largely focused on annual scales, this study introduces a novel examination of Tianjin’s quarterly carbon emission intensity and its influencing factors from 2012 to 2022 using quarterly data and the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model. The analysis considers the carbon emission effects of thermal power generation, the power supply structure, power intensity effects, and economic activity intensity. The results indicate a general decline in Tianjin’s carbon emission intensity from 2012 to 2020, followed by an increase in 2021 and 2022. This trend, exhibiting significant seasonal fluctuations, revealed the highest carbon emission intensity in the first quarter (an average of 1.4093) and the lowest in the second quarter (an average of 1.0019). Economic activity intensity emerged as the predominant factor influencing carbon emission intensity changes, particularly notable in the second quarter (an average of −0.0374). Thermal power generation and electricity intensity effects were significant in specific seasons, while the power supply structure’s impact remained relatively minor yet stable. These findings provide essential insights for formulating targeted carbon reduction strategies, underscoring the need to optimize energy structures, enhance energy efficiency, and account for the seasonal impacts of economic activity patterns on carbon emissions.

Abstract:Global economies aim for economic expansion through natural resource utilization, yet resource extraction and consumption are directly linked to global warming and environmental degradation. While efforts to address climate change and global warming are underway, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the key drivers of environmental degradation at a global level. This study explores the drivers of global carbon emissions from 1990 to 2021. The data was found to be stationary at the first difference using various diagnostic tests, and cointegration tests confirmed a long-run equilibrium relationship between the variables. Employing the Method of Moment Quantile Regression, the study reveals heterogeneous influences of different natural resource components on environmental quality. Forest rents and oil rents positively impact carbon emissions, while natural gas rents reduce emissions. Economic and population growth contribute significantly to carbon emissions, while technological innovation and renewable consumption have adverse effects. The results are robust, and verified through parametric and non-parametric econometric tools, leading to relevant policy implications such as enhancing technological innovation and renewables investment.

Abstract:In recent years, global warming has become increasingly devastating, leading to severe consequences, such as extreme weather events and sea-level rise. To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, it is essential to recognize different emission sources and key driving factors. Three main carbon emission sources from the period between 1990 and 2017 were identified in China: the energy industry, fuel combustion in other industries, and industrial process. For each source, a driving force model was developed via multiple linear regression. Based on these models, forecasts of the carbon intensity and total CO 2 emissions were obtained from 2018 to 2030. The results demonstrate that the CO 2 emission intensity and total emissions will continue to decrease but more effort will be required to achieve the goal of Paris Agreement.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth in China with 29 Chinese provincial data of waste water,solid wastes and exhaust gas as environmental indexes and per capita income as economic index over the period 1989-2005.The results show that with the rise of per capita income,per capita waste water emission appears a relationship of first increasing and then decreasing,but per capita solid wastes generated and per capita waste gas emission take on monotonously increasing relationships.

Abstract:Amid global efforts to combat climate change, China's targets for reaching carbon peak and achieving carbon neutrality are critical for enhancing environmental governance and promoting sustainable economic growth. This study investigates the impacts of experimental carbon emissions trading markets on industrial coordination within a typical inland urban cluster in China, employing innovative regression control methods (RCM) to analyze changes in regional industrial dynamics. The analysis reveals significant findings: firstly, the establishment of carbon emissions trading markets has tangibly influenced industrial coordination across the economic zone; and secondly, while industrial coordination within the manufacturing sectors has seen a substantial increase, coordination in the productive service sectors remains relatively unchanged. These outcomes highlight the differential effects of carbon market policies on various sectors and underscore the importance of targeted interventions in achieving broader environmental and economic objectives.

Abstract:In recent years, the issue of regional economics and carbon emissions has become a research hotspot in the cross field of economy, environment and ecology. This paper selects the regional economics and carbon emissions related literature collected in the Web of Science (WOS) database as the basis, and uses the bibliometric software Citespace and VOSviewer to visually analyze the time distribution, organization, author and keywords in this research field. This paper provides a more systematic analysis of how different regions of China could achieve carbon emission objectives, from the aspects of regional industrial transformation, energy consumption structure, policy implementation and regional coordinated development. The keywords with high frequency are carbon emissions, economic growth and energy consumption, etc. The research hotspots can be divided into structural decomposition analysis, low-carbon industry transformation path, policy framework and energy efficiency, etc. The results show that future research should strengthen multidisciplinary cross-integration in different universities and institutions. However, based on in-depth analysis, the key factors which affect regional carbon emissions are regional policy implementation, changes in industrial structures, optimization of energy consumption structure and carbon trade market mechanism. Finally, we suggest that institutions and scholars should conduct adequate interdisciplinary and cross-industry cooperation; industrial sector development should consider local endowment; there should greater use of clean energy to optimize the energy consumption structure; and an increase in R&D carbon capture and sequestration technology.

Abstract:This study attempts to measure the drag effect of carbon emissions on China’s economic growth by incorporating carbon emissions as an endogenous variable into an economic growth model and by relaxing the assumption that the size of the economy will remain unchanged. The drag effect of carbon emissions on the process of urbanisation is derived based on the intrinsic relationship between economic growth and urban development. Then, unit root and cointegration tests are performed using panel data from 30 provincial regions in Mainland China from 2003 to 2016 to prove and estimate the resistance caused by carbon emission in the process of urbanisation. Results show that the drag effect of carbon emission between 2003 and 2016 has a certain negative impact on the process of urbanisation in China. Due to the constraints of carbon emissions, the growth rate of China’s economic growth and urbanization level is 0.74% and 4.96% lower than that without constraints, respectively. Therefore, in the process of rapid urbanisation, formulating a reasonable carbon emission reduction strategy by the provincial government is conducive to the healthy and sustainable development of urbanisation.
