Abstract:We develop and validate an empirical measure of the informativeness of accounting assets in measuring firm-specific economic capital, an important determinant of both cash flows and intrinsic values. Our validation tests show that the asset-informativeness measure is sensitive to differences in both accounting methods and implementation decisions at the firm level, and corresponds to the way equity investors use the information in accounting assets. We find that accounting assets contain substantial information about firms’ productive capacity (economic capital) and the information is not summarized in several earnings attributes often associated with earnings quality.

Abstract:This paper exhibits the historical evolution of the balance sheet in the People's Republic of China. In particular, we examine three major changes in the balance sheet (which reports the financial position of an economic or business entity) since the founding of the new China in 1949 and the political, social and economic changes during this period. The content, structure and presentation of the balance sheet (or alternative forms of the statement in use) are illustrated. The political and economic factors driving its evolution are analyzed to assist readers in understanding the rapid changes in Chinese accounting over the last six decades. The implications of the Chinese experience for international accounting convergence are also briefly outlined.

Abstract:Under the action of the international capital flow and the government budget deficits,bank credit expansion of China was continuous,the financial instability was increased.Based on the currency crisis theory,adopting the Bal-ance Sheet Approach,this paper analyzes the capital structure mismatch of excessive debt of China′s economic sector, the mismatch of economy gross debt which tends to be short term,and the currency mismatch of the creditor′s right that increasingly becomes apparent and aggravated,and illustrates the reason of the mismatching of national balance sheet in order to analyze its possible financial instability from the whole economy.In order to promote financial stability China, we should use innovative financial products to revitalize the money stock,break the soft budget constraint and implement the macro-prudential regulation on capital project,then dissolve the risk of mismatching of national balance sheet.

Abstract:Balance sheet approach is an important method developed and promoted by the IMF in macro-prudential analysis.The article attempts to apply the approach in the analysis of China's regional financial risk.By constructing the matrix of balance sheet positions of public departments,policy banks,state-owned and joint-stock banks,local corporation banks,large and medium sized enterprises,private and micro enterprises,the article examines the situation of term mismatch,solvency and capital structure of all the macro economic and financial departments in specific regions from 2005 to 2009.It also points out that issues such as the term mismatch in local corporation banks,the over-concentrated creditor's right of financial departments,and the raise of leverage ratio in large and medium sized enterprises may exacerbate the fragility of regional economic and financial system.

Abstract:After 2000, with the Chinese reform in market economics, the standard in accounting, which includes the account code and systems, takes great changes. Based upon the assembling theory and logical reason of extenics, this paper analyzes the conflicting problems between the former two completely, such as the containing ability in economic factors, extensive reform in accounting systems, the related net and divergent tree in account code, the interaction conversion between two standards, and its self-contradict solution. It presents the dynamic target and formal inevitability of the account code and systems upon the conjugant pair theory. At last, it reaches the cognition of the developmental purpose in accounting standard.

Abstract:AN INDEPENDENCE OF THE asset and liability composition of the firm is implied in much modern financial theory; the independence of investing and financing decisions is a prominent part of Modigliani and Miller's classic capital structure research. While the separation of financing and investing decisions is an invaluable assumption which greatly simplifies many corporate financial decisions, the actual balance sheets of modern corporations do not exhibit an independence between the two sides of the balance sheet. The purposes of this paper are (1) to identify relationships between the two sides of the balance sheet exhibited by these corporations and (2) to explain the nature of these relationships. The independence of asset and liability composition is explicit in Modigliani and Miller's capital structure propositions [15]. In their 1958 article, they demonstrate that, given a stream of risky earnings, the total market value of the firm and cost of capital are independent of capital structure (M & M's Proposition I). Furthermore, the cutoff rate for an investment project is completely independent of the way an investment is financed (M & M's Proposition III), thus implying a complete separation between the investing and financing decisions of the firm.' The teaching of corporate finance, as reflected in the major textbooks, compartmentalizes the decision areas of finance and, within each compartment, management is assumed to attempt to maximize the firm's wealth, holding the other areas of the firm constant. For example, capital budgeting decisions are made given a cost of capital or required rate of return (a capital project is evaluated independent of how it is financed), or the capital structure is chosen given the character of the firm's assets. Cash, receivables, and inventory balances tend to be optimized independently. Abstract:<span>Investigating the principles and methods of natural resource asset accounting and balance sheet compilation is an important aspect of protecting natural resources and promoting ecological civilization. Accounting should be based on physical quantity accounting and supplemented by value quantity accounting. To avoid interest distortion caused by excessive paid use and valuation, the monopolized use of natural resources should be avoided. The contents of land resource asset accounting should include the area, quality, and price, and value quantity accounting should follow the principle of marketability. The balance sheet of natural resources should belong to the category of the national balance sheet. It is proposed that emphasis should be placed on promoting the use of modern information technology, as well as surveying and mapping techniques, to conduct comprehensive and accurate surveys of various types of natural resources. Scientific, solid, and accurate investigation and monitoring data are the foundation of natural resource asset accounting.</span>

Attribution of Earnings Restatements: From the Perspective of Balance Sheet Bloat

Abstract:Earnings restatements have been filed at record levels in the past few years,which undermine the credibility of accounting information and influence the efficiency of capital markets.However,a significant debate remains regarding the underlying cause of restatements.Most scholars think that earnings restatements should be blamed on error,or misunderstanding of accounting standards,other researchers persist that restatements are due to intentional earnings management.This paper studies the reasons of earnings restatements from the perspective of balance sheet bloat drawing on existing research to solve the dispute of scholars.With regression analysis,we find out that overstated companies have higher balance sheet bloat compared with no-restatement companies in restated years,indicating that overstated companies have adjusted upward earnings.There is no significant difference in net operating assets between core restatements companies and no-core restatements companies.The beginning balance sheet bloat of irregular restatements companies is higher than that of the regular companies in restated years,which means that the limited opportunities to adjust earnings within accounting standards flexibility is the main reason of restating companies linked to accounting violations.In order to provide additional assurance that balance sheet bloat measure is consistent with earnings management behavior,we also analyze discretionary accruals in restated years.Robustness test results indicate that overstated companies mainly adjust upwards earnings via accruals.This proves that earnings restatements should be attributed to intentional earnings manipulation.Existing research on earnings management focuses on income statements,and this paper shifts it to the balance sheet,which is another contribution of the paper.Our findings indicate that the balance sheet contains information above and beyond that contained in the income statement that is useful for evaluating the financial prospects of the firms.Therefore,policymakers should reduce the flexible space of accounting choice and strengthen the supervision of restatements to improve the quality of accounting information.

Abstract:International financial integration has accelerated at an unprecedented pace in recent years. External holdings of financial assets and liabilities for both industrial and emerging countries have grown rapidly since the mid-1990s, many times exceeding their respective national income, and traditional surveillance methods using flow data are increasingly incapable of satisfactorily explaining the recent major global economic developments. Using Lane and Milesi-Ferretti's (2006) rich data-set of external positions for 145 countries from 1970 to 2004, this paper selects several issues to highlight the usefulness of balance sheet analysis as a tool for historical understanding and to examine how it can help in an analysis of possible future vulnerabilities. Starting from a global overview, the study looks at China from a comparative angle vis-a-vis the world and the rest of Asia, and finally focuses on the evolution of the external position of China. Although the investigations are preliminary in nature, this paper demonstrates how China has emerged as an important net creditor in an increasingly integrated world and suggests that as China becomes more important globally as a net creditor, the balance sheet analysis of trends and a clearer focus on real total rates of return on external assets, and their risk management, have become increasingly more important over time. It is hoped that this paper will stimulate more academic and policy analysis in this growing area of policy importance.

Abstract:Financial statement analysis bases on financial statements and other information, using special analytical tools and methods to systematically analyze and evaluate the past and present operating results and financial position of an enterprise. It also predicts the future development trend of the enterprise and provides valuable information for decision-making to reduce uncertainty in decision-making. The current financial statements have limitations in the financial statements themselves, including the lack of non-financial information, the lagging nature of the financial statements, accounting policies, optional accounting treatments and subjective estimates by accountants. In terms of financial analysis indicators, some of the solvency indicators and operating capacity indicators have limitations. In terms of financial analysis methods, the comparative analysis method, factor analysis method and trend analysis method all have certain limitations. These limitations are discussed and analyzed in this paper. Suggestions are also made on the financial statements themselves, the indicators to be analyzed in the financial statements and the methods of financial analysis.

Abstract:The balance sheet of PBC reflects our monetary policy operation.While central banks in developed economies have high ratios of government claims and currency,PBC owns a totally opposite feature,a high ratio of foreign currency assets and a low ratio of currency.Though such asset-liability structure is to some extent explainable,given the special role of monetary policy in the economic transformation.However,this distorted structure entails some potential financial risks.The paper proposes some useful ideas to improve the current asset-liability structure of PBC.

Abstract:<p>One of the top priorities of the Chinese government's oversight is to address the conflicts between economic growth and resource consumption and between economic development and ecological damage. In this regard, the advocacy and compilation of the natural resources balance sheet can boost the efficiency of the government's oversight and improve the quality of resource management. However, China's natural resources balance sheet is still at an exploratory stage, lacking the theoretical framework of balance sheet preparation, preparatory ideas, and a reporting system, which must be established urgently. First, the study states the purpose of compiling the natural resources balance sheet, and, subsequently, analyzes the theoretical basis, framework system, preparatory ideas, and sample sheet format, thereby offering theoretical and methodological support for its preparation. Moreover, the development, functions, deficits, and future development of the balance sheet are analyzed in the context of the Chinese system, which provides theoretical and methodological support for the preparation of the natural resources balance sheet and government oversight.</p>

Abstract:Many studies have pointed out two motivations in setting up provisions for asset write-downs: economic factors and manipulation. We put forward a third motivation: conservatism, which means that in the same impairment circumstances, "bad news" companies will take more write-downs than "good news" companies. It could be regarded as a systematic measurement error. Furthermore, we study the influence of conservatism and manipulation in setting up provisions on reliability and relevance of accounting information, and suggest some measures on setting, executing and supervising accounting standards.

Abstract:The deposit inbalance has increased continuously in recent years.This paper analyzes the intrinsic factors causing deposit inbalance from the perspective of mechanization by which it generates.Through empirical analyses based on the data from 2001 to 2005,it is shown that the rapid increase of base money is the direct cause of deposit inbalance;lower cash leakage ratio is also one of the causes of deposit inbalance;and the diversification of assets induces the expanding of deposit inbalance,too.
