Abstract:Endosulfan, a persistent organic pollutant newly listed under the Stockholm Convention, is currently widely produced and used as a pesticide in China. Concentrations of endosulfans (including α-, β-isomers, and their metabolite endosulfan sulfate) were determined in surface soil collected from Huai’an city, where the largest endosulfan producer is located. The concentrations of Σendosulfan (sum of α-endosulfan, β-endosulfan, and endosulfan sulfate) at all sites ranged from 0.28 to 44.81 ng/g dry weight (dw), following a lognormal distribution. The geometric mean was 1.09 ng/g dw, and the geometric standard deviation was 3.02. The β-endosulfan levels were consistently greater than those of α-isomer. The concentration ratios of α-endosulfan to β-endosulfan ranged from 0.03 to 0.70, which were much lower than the commercial endosulfan mixture. This is because that α-endosulfan is more volatile and degrades faster than β-endosulfan in soil. The contour map of Σendosulfan levels in soil indicates that the factory was the point pollution source with the highest endosulfan level in its surrounding area, especially the southern area. However, the non-point agricultural sources are more important. Based on Monte Carlo simulation, the Σendosulfan inventory in soil in Huai’an is estimated to be 0.8–3.0 tons. In order to understand the potential ecological risk of endosulfan, the Monte Carlo-based hazard quotient distribution was estimated and showed that Σendosulfan posed a potentially high risk to soil organisms. To our knowledge, this study is the first that reports soil pollution and risk of endosulfan around the manufacturer in China. This study will help China’s implementation of Stockholm Convention for the reduction and elimination of endosulfan in future.

Abstract:The recently discovered endosulfan-degrading bacterial strains Pusillimonas sp. JW2 and Bordetella petrii NS were isolated from endosulfan-polluted water and soil environments. The optimal conditions for the growth and biodegradation activity of the strains JW2 and NS were studied in detail. In addition, the ability of the strains JW2 and NS to biodegrade endosulfan in soils during in situ bioremediation experiments was investigated. At a concentration of 2 mg of endosulfan per kilogram of soil, both JW2 and NS had positive effects on the degradation of endosulfan; JW2 degraded 100% and 91.5% of α- and β-endosulfan, respectively, and NS degraded 95.1% and 90.3% of α- and β-endosulfan, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of soil samples showed the successful colonization of JW2 and NS, and the toxicity of the soil decreased, as determined by single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assays of Eiseniafetida and micronucleus (MN) assays of Viciafaba root tip cells. Furthermore, the metabolic products of the bacterially degraded endosulfan from the in situ experiments were identified as endosulfan ether and lactone. This study provided potentially foundational backgrounds information for the remediation of endosulfan-contaminated soil.
Endosulfan in the Chinese Environment: Monitoring and Modeling

Abstract:This paper reviews the usage and emissions of endosulfan, the newest member of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), in China, and its fate and behavior in Chinese environment. Endosulfan usage in China has been estimated to be approximately 25700 t between 1994 and 2004. Concentrations of endosulfan in different environmental compartments in China, such as air, soil, water, and biota, but focusing at air and surface soil, have been summarized. Concentrations of total endosulfan in surface soil across China were ranged from below detection limit (BDL) to 19000 pg·g-1 dry weight (dw), with geometric mean of 120 pg·g-1dw. The results indicated that endosulfan sulfate had highest concentration in Chinese soil, followed by β- and α-endosulfan. Air concentrations of endosulfan in China were ranged 0–340 pg·m-3 for α-endosulfan and 0–121 pg·m-3 for β-endosulfan, with high concentrations occurred in the cotton production areas. Gridded usage inventories of endosulfan on a fine gridded system with a 1/4° longitude by 1/6° latitude resolution were compiled, from which, emission to air and residues in soil of endosulfan were calculated in each grid by using a modified simplified gridded pesticide emission and residue model (SGPERM), an integrated modeling system combining mathematical model, database management system, and geographic information system. Total emissions were around 10800 t from 1994 to 2004. Based on the emission and residue inventories, concentrations of α- and β-endosulfan in Chinese air and agricultural surface soil were also calculated for each grid cell, which are in general consistent with the published monitoring data.
Effects of endosulfan on the spermatogenesis and oxidative damage in rats

Abstract:AIM To investigate if the effects of endosulfan on spermatogenesis in rats are related to oxidative damage. METHODS Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups with 6 rats in each. Animals in the 1 st to 4 th groups were orally administrated with endosulfan of 0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg·kg-1 daily, 6 times a week for 10 weeks. Those in the 5 th and 6 th group were given intraperitoneally with vitamin C 20 and 40 mg·kg-1 synchronously with the oral administration of 7.5 mg·kg-1 endosulfan. Daily sperm production (DSP), sperm count and morphology were studied after the treatments. Lipid peroxidation product (LPO) and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in serum, liver and testis homogenates were determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS The DSP and epididymal sperm count decreased, whereas the incidence of sperm abnormality increased significantly in the endosulfan treated groups compared with those in control group. LPO and 8-OHdG in serum, liver, and testis homogenates increased significantly in the endosulfan treated groups compared with those in control group. The acknowledged antioxidant vitamin C administered simultaneously with endosulfan partly protected against the endosulfan induced sperm toxicity and the oxidative damages to liver and testis. CONCLUSION These results implied that the oxidative damage may be involved in the mechanism of endosulfan induced reproductive toxicities.

Abstract:Endosulfan is one of the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and also a candidate to be included in a group of new persistent organic pollutants (UNEP 2007). The first national endosulfan usage inventories in China with 1/4° longitude by 1/6° latitude resolution has been reported in an accompanying paper. In the second part of the paper, we compiled the gridded historical emissions and soil residues of endosulfan in China from the usage inventories. Based on the residue/emission data, gridded concentrations of endosulfan in Chinese soil and air have been calculated. These inventories will provide valuable data for the further study of endosulfan.

Abstract:Short-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP) pollution has become a global threat. Much attention has been paid to their environmental occurrence and toxicity. In this review, we summarized the wide distribution of SCCPs in various environmental matrices and biota, including human beings. Toxicokinetics and the toxicities of SCCPs, including lethality, hepatotoxicity, developmental toxicity, carcinogenicity, endocrine- and metabolism-disrupting effects, and immunomodulatory effects have been considered. The mechanisms of SCCP toxicity are mainly related to oxidative stress, metabolic disturbance, endocrine disruption and binding to biomacromolecules. In the future, further studies of SCCPs should focus on searching for their novel toxicity targets, and uncovering their toxic effects using transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and mutigenerational toxicity.

Abstract:Food contamination with aflatoxins is the focus of current concern. The i ntermittent incidence of these toxins in agricultural commodities has negative effects on the economy of the affected regions where harvest and postharvest techniques for the prevention of mold growth are seldom practiced. Aflatoxins are highly hepatotoxic, hepatocarcinogenic,teratogenic, and mutagenic in nature and they contaminate a wide variety of important agricultural commodities, such as peanuts, maize, rice and cottonseed, before, during and after harvest in various environmental conditions/settings. The biosynthesis of aflatoxins in nature depends upon the various factors such as carbon, nitrogen, temperature, water activity,pH, developmental stages, oxidative stress, and plant metabolites. These toxins can cause several ailments and can be controlled by blocking and interfering with the absorption and disturbing the metabolic enzymes. The present article overviews the biosynthesis, infection, transport, metabolism and toxicity of aflatoxins. Detailed studies on their biosynthesis,mechanism of toxicity, structure-function relationship, metabolism and transport will provide deep insight into the technology involved in the development of an effective control measures for aflatoxins.

Abstract:The potential for toxicants to harm organisms in the environment is influenced by the physicochemistry of the substances and their environmental behaviors and transformation within ecosystems. This special issue is composed of 20 papers that report on studies which have investigated the fate and toxicity of various toxicants including engineered nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, antibiotics, pathogens, heavy metals, and agricultural nutrients. The environmental transformations of these substances and how these processes affect their toxicity are emphasized. This paper highlights the important findings and perspectives of the selected papers in this special edition, with an aim of providing insights into full-scale evaluation on the toxicity of various contaminants that exist in ecosystems. General suggestions are provided for the future directions of toxicological research.
Combined Effects of Cadmium and Sulfamethoxazole on Eisenia Fetida: Insights into Accumulation, Subcellular Partitioning, Biomarkers and Toxicological Responses

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) frequently coexist in farmlands, yet their synergistic toxicological impacts on terrestrial invertebrates remain unexplored. In this study, earthworms were exposed to artificial soils percolated with Cd (5 mg/kg), SMX (5 mg/kg) or combination of them for 7 days, followed by a 12-day elimination phase in uncontaminated soil. The uptake of Cd and SMX by the earthworms, along with their subcellular distribution, was meticulously analyzed. Additionally, a suite of biomarkers-including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and weight loss-were evaluated to assess the health status of the earthworms and the toxicological effects of the Cd and SMX mixture. Notably, the cotreatment with Cd and SMX resulted in a significantly higher weight loss in Eisenia fetida (41.25 %) compared to exposure to Cd alone (26.84 %). Moreover, the cotreatment group exhibited substantially higher concentrations of Cd in the total internal body, fraction C (cytosol), and fraction E (tissue fragments and cell membranes) in Eisenia fetida compared to Cd alone counterparts. The combined exposure also significantly elevated the SMX levels in the total body and fraction C compared with the SMX-only treated earthworms. Additionally, Eisenia fetida subjected to the combined treatment showed markedly increased activities of SOD, CAT, and MDA compared to those treated with Cd alone. The effect addition indices (EAIs), ranging from 1.00 to 2.23, unequivocally demonstrated a synergistic effect of the combined treatments. Interestingly, relocating the earthworms to clean soil did not mitigate the observed adverse effects. These findings underscore the increased risk posed by the Cd-SMX complex to terrestrial invertebrates in agricultural areas.
The Potential Endocrine Disruption of Pesticide Transformation Products (tps): the Blind Spot of Pesticide Risk Assessment.

Abstract:The ecological and health risk assessment of environmental pesticide residues have attracted ever-growing attention; however, their transformation products (TPs) have seldom been considered. Herein, we examined the endocrine-disrupting effects of 4 widely used pesticides as pyriproxyfen (Pyr), malathion (ML), benalaxyl (BX), and fenoxaprop-ethyl (FE), together with their 21 TPs through in vitro and in silico approaches, and found approximately 50% of the TPs exhibited stronger endocrine-disrupting effects than their corresponding parent compounds. Specifically, Pyr and 9 TPs (five TPs of Pyr, one of ML, one of BX, and two of FE) exhibited estrogen-disrupting effects, which were also confirmed by results of E-screen and pS2 expression assays, and molecular docking showed that certain hydroxylated TPs could well mimic the binding mode of estrogen with ERα. Meanwhile, two TPs of Pyr, ML and its TP demonstrated weak glucocorticoid antagonistic activities partially contributed by hydrogen bonds. We also discovered that in H295R cells, all the endocrine disruptors increased hormone secretion and the related gene expression levels. Conclusively, since an increasing number of pesticide TPs have been being detected in various environmental media, a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological risk of pesticide TPs is imperative for risk assessments more extensively and regulatory policy-making on pesticide restriction in the future.

Abstract:<p>Strobilurin fungicides (SFs), a class of new fungicides, use strobilurin A as a lead compound. However, with excessive production and usage, the SF residues in soil and aquatic ecosystems may lead to environmental pollution. The mechanism of action (MOA) of SFs is respiratory inhibition of fungal mitochondria. Specifically, azoxystrobin (AZO), pyraclostrobin (PYR), trifloxystrobin (TRI), fluoxastrobin (FLUO), picoxystrobin (PICO), and kresoxim-methyl (KRE) are considered the most widely used SFs. The toxicities of those six fungicides in the environment are still unclear. The present review summarized the toxicities of the six SFs to terrestrial and aquatic biota, including mice, amphibians, aquatic organisms (fish, daphnia, algae, etc.), apoidea, soil animals (earthworms and <em>Folsomia fimetaria</em>), and soil microorganisms. We also review the residue, fate, and transportation of SFs. The results indicate that SFs are highly toxic to aquatic and soil organisms and pose potential risks to ecosystems. Current toxicology studies are more focused on acute or chronic toxicity, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear and require further analysis. In addition, a simple and scientific analysis method is needed to compare the toxicity differences of different SFs to the same test organisms or differences in the same SFs to different test organisms.</p>

A nationwide survey on the endosulfan residues in Chinese cotton field soil: Occurrence, trend, and ecological risk

Abstract:The nationwide occurrence of endosulfan residues in cotton fields has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, 202 surface soil samples from 27 cities were collected from cotton fields in 8 major cotton-planting provinces of China, covering more than 97% of the national cotton sown area. The results showed that endosulfan residues were detected in cotton fields throughout the country. The main type of residue found was endosulfan sulfate (ES-sulfate), followed by β-endosulfan and α-endosulfan, with average concentrations of 0.475, 0.129, and 0.048 μg/kg, respectively. Significant spatial variations in the endosulfan residues was noted, and the highest concentration of endosulfan residues was observed in the northwest inland cotton-growing area, followed by that in the Yellow River basin and Yangtze River basin cotton-growing areas. The endosulfan residues showed significant positive correlations with soil organic matter and soil clay contents. The α/β endosulfan ratio was determined to be in the range of 0.02–1.20, indicating that endosulfan residues originated from the endosulfan application performed in historical cotton cultivation efforts. Together with the literature data, the concentrations of α-endosulfan and β-endosulfan residues peaked in 2015 and 2017, respectively, and showed an overall decreasing trend from 2002 to 2021. The results of the ecological risk assessment suggested that Folsomia candida was most sensitive to endosulfan residues, with 20.8% of the sites presenting a high risk. However, in general, the soil ecological risk of cotton fields across the country was low. Our study demonstrated that China has achieved promising results in controlling the use and pollution of endosulfan, especially after 2014.

Abstract:Endosulfan is a broadly applied cyclodiene insecticide which has been in use across 80 countries since last 5 decades. Owing to its recalcitrant nature, endosulfan residues have been reported from air, water and soil causing toxicity to various non-target organisms. Microbial decontamination of endosulfan has been reported previously by several authors. In the current study, we have evaluated the pathways of endosulfan degradation and its hazardous impact on other living beings including insects, humans, plants, aquatic life and environment by in-silico methods. For establishment of the endosulfan metabolism in different ecosystems, cell designer was employed. The established model was thereafter assessed and simulated to understand the biochemical and physiological metabolism of the endosulfan in various systems of the network. Topological investigation analysis of the endosulfan metabolism validated the presence of 207 nodes and 274 edges in the network. We have concluded that biomagnification of the endosulfan generally occurs in the various elements of the ecosystem. Dynamics study of endosulfan degrading enzymes suggested the important role of monooxygenase I, II and hydrolase in endosulfan bioremediation. Endosulfan shows toxicity in human beings, fishes and plants, however it is biodegraded by the microbes. To date, there are no reports of in- silico analysis of bioremediation of endosulfan and its hazardous effects on the environment. Thus, this report can be important in terms of modelling and simulation of biodegradation network of endosulfan and similar compounds and their impact on several other systems.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract:Chlorpyrifos was widely used in prevention of insect pests and treatment of diseases in agriculture since it was thought to be an efficient,safe and broad-spectrum heterocyclic insecticide.Chlorpyrifos was suggested to replace insecticide high-toxic pesticide for pollution-free agricultural products by National Development and Reform Commission.However,it has recently been prohibited for use in USA and some European countries because of environment safety concerns.Here the toxicological mechanisms,environmental exposures,transformation,and environmental quality criteria of Chlorpyrifos were discussed in this paper based on recent literatures.This work aimed to provide basic background and data for environmental health risk assessment,the ecological risk assessment and water quality criteria assessment in China.

Abstract:Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. SCCPs have persistence, bioaccumulation, long-range environmental mobility and biological toxicity, significant toxicity to aquatic organisms, and potential carcinogenicity. Little study was on the progress research on the current environmental pollution in China. We reviewed the pollution conditions of SCCPs in air, soil, and water and their accumulation in food and organisms in China, especially for the contaminations of aquatic ecosystem. Meanwhile, we summarize the recent studies on the toxic effects and toxicological mechanisms of SCCPs on aquatic organisms and mammals. Finally, the further direction and trends for SCCP research were proposed. More efforts are necessary to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment and evaluate the relative importance of the various exposure routes.

Environmental Toxicology EFFECTS OF B-Endosulfan ON THE GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION OF ZEBRAFISH (DANIO RERIO)

Abstract:Because of persistent organic pollution in aquatic environments, the widely used organochlorine pesticide endosulfan, which is a potential endocrine disruptor, is expected to pose a significant risk to aquatic organisms. In the present study, we explored the potential endocrine-disrupting risk of b-endosulfan by investigating its effect on the growth, reproduction, plasma vitellogenin, and organ histology of adult zebrafish. We found that, although b-endosulfan did not significantly affect the growth of zebrafish, it greatly decreased the hatching rate, even at a concentration as low as 10 ng/L. Interestingly, the decrease of the hatching rate was highly correlated with pathological alterations of the testes. Additionally, the values of the gonadosomatic index were significantly reduced in female zebrafish treated with 200 ng/L b-endosulfan, which was also closely associated with ovarian histological changes. More importantly, a significant increase in the level of vitellogenin was observed in all male fish treated with b-endosulfan. Based on these findings, we conclude that b-endosulfan severely affects the reproductive function of zebrafish and the synthesis of vitellogenin in the liver, and thus, b-endosulfan has a serious endocrine disruption function in zebrafish. Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), recognized worldwide as emerging pollutants, may pose a substantial threat to human health and our environment due to their stability, high concentrations, wide distribution, and easy accumulation. Ever since perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid were recognized by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, the public has become increasingly concerned about potential contamination and the environmental risks associated with PFASs. Ubiquitous PFAS contamination of drinking water, groundwater, surface water, and sediment has been detected, especially in areas with rapid industrial and economic development. Its accumulation in living organisms and foods has accentuated the importance of investigations into aquatic organisms at the bottom of the food chain, as the stability and integrity of the food web as well as the population quantity and structure of the aquatic ecosystem may be affected. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the toxic and toxicity-related effects of PFASs on aquatic plankton, aquatic invertebrates and microorganisms, the characteristics of different target aquatic organisms in toxicity investigations, and a feasibility evaluation of PFAS substitutes to provide valuable suggestions for further utilization and regulation of PFASs and their substitutes.

Abstract:The practice of incorporating post-harvest crop waste is widely used because it maintains soil fertility and avoids environmental pollution from straw burning. However, the practice of straw incorporation may also retain the pesticides that are applied to crop plants, which may pose a potential long term risk to local and regional environments if the applied pesticide is a Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) substance or a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP). Here we investigate the influence of the "receiving-retention-release" route on the distribution of a POP pesticide (endosulfan) and the associated environmental risk among different environmental compartments. Our study indicates that most endosulfan enters the atmosphere (phi(atmcsphere) = 64.5-72.5%), which is dominated by the indirect route of volatilization from crop plants (phi(atmosphere), indirect = 54.7-70.3%). In contrast, soil releases are minor (phi(soil) = 10.8-20.5%), and are dominated by direct release during application (phi(soil), (direct) = 8.0-18.0%). Under the practice of straw incorporation, the use of endosulfan posed an environmental risk to agricultural soil. In addition, the atmospheric deposition of endosulfan also posed an environmental risk to sediment. The study highlights the significance of the "receiving-retention-release" route by crop plants in determining the fate of POP pesticides associated with straw incorporation; hence complementing the current methodology for assessing the environmental risk of these compounds. Environmental Concerns and Toxicogenetic Endpoints of Priority Substances (pss) and Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (cecs): A Comprehensive Review

Abstract:Priority Substance (PSs) and Contaminant of Emerging Concerns (CECs) exhibited a wide range of environmental and public health concerns worldwide.This review summarized the documented studies related to the current surface water occurrence, spatial distribution, ecological risks and toxicity of selected PSs, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and CECs, such as Di(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) and Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs).The spatial distribution analysis revealed alarming levels of PAHs in the surface waters of Asian counties, e.g., 84210 ng L -1 in Gomti River, India, 29325 ng L -1 in Daya Bay, China and 1287 ng L -1 in Chenab River, Pakistan.As for DEHP, the highest concentrations of 13050 µg L -1 in Liao River, China, and 2306 µg L -1 in Rivers of Eastern Cape, South Africa were reported.These environmental levels of PAHs and DEHP were many folds higher than the surface water permissible levels devised by WHO and USEPA.Contrarily, the emerging PPCPs were reported in relatively lower levels in the surface waters globally, compared to that of PAHs and DEHP.Consistent with the environmental levels, PAHs and DEHP revealed alarming ecological risks in the surface water sources, compared to that of PPCPs.Regarding to the sources of PSs and CECs, PAHs emissions were mostly linked to the incomplete combustion of petroleum products, DEHP contamination was associated to its applications in consumption and production of plastic appliances and PPCPs emissions were largely related to the domestic and industrial effluents.As for toxic endpoints of PAHs, DEHP and PPCPs, all of these were reported to cause DNA damage, genotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, developmental toxicity and immunotoxicity, as revealed in reviewed in vitro/vivo studies.In addition, the current review also highlighted the existing environmental regulations to control the emissions of these pollutants to the environmental matrices.Taken together, this review concluded that despite the existing environmental regulations, the current levels of organic pollutants are still on rising, especially in Asian countries.Therefore, the strict implementation of the existing regulations is highly necessary to control these pollutants to ensure public health and ecological integrity.

Abstract:Over a third of the global chemical production and sales occurred in China, which make effective assessment and management for chemicals produced by China's chemical industry essential not just for China but for the world. Here, we systematical assessed the persistence (P), bioaccumulation (B), mobility (M) and toxicity (T) potency properties for the chemicals listed in Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances of China (IECSC) via experimental data retrieved from large scale databases and in silico data generated with well-established models. Potential PBT, PMT and PB&MT substances were identified. High risk potentials were highlighted for groups of synthetic intermediates, raw materials, as well as a series of biocides. The potential PBT and PMT synthetic intermediates and/or raw materials unique to the IECSC were dominated with organofluorines, for example, the intermediates used as electronic light-emitting materials. Meanwhile, the biocides unique to the IECSC were mainly organochlorines. Some conventional classes of insecticides, such as organochlorines and pyrethroids, were classified as being of high concern. We further identified a group of PB&MT substances that were considered to be both "bioaccumulative" and "mobile". Their properties and common substructures for several major clusters were characterized. The present results prioritized groups of substances with high potentials to cause adverse effects to the environment and humans, many of which have not yet been fully recognized.
