Abstract:We observed in superconducting (Tl, Rb)(2)Fe4Se5 spin-wave branches that span an energy range from 6.5 to 209 meV. Spin dynamics are successfully described by a Heisenberg localized spin model whose dominant in-plane interactions include only the nearest (J(1) and J(1)') and next nearest neighbor (J(2) and J(2)') exchange terms within and between the tetramer spin blocks, respectively. These experimentally determined exchange constants would crucially constrain the theoretical viewpoints on magnetism and superconductivity in the Fe-based materials. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.100501

Abstract:The magnetic and iron vacancy orders in superconducting (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 single-crystals are investigated by using a high-pressure neutron diffraction technique. Similar to the temperature effect, the block antiferromagnetic order gradually decreases upon increasing pressure while the Fe vacancy superstructural order remains intact before its precipitous disappearance at the critical pressure Pc = 8.3 GPa. Combined with previously determined Pc for superconductivity, our phase diagram under pressure reveals the concurrence of the block AFM order, the iron vacancy order and superconductivity for the 245 superconductor. A synthesis of current experimental data in a coherent physical picture is attempted.

Abstract:Neutron diffraction has been used to study the lattice and magnetic structures of the insulating and superconducting Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$. For the insulating Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$, neutron polarization analysis and single-crystal neutron diffraction unambiguously confirm the earlier proposed $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ block antiferromagnetic structure. For superconducting samples (${T}_{c}=30$ K), we find that in addition to the tetragonal $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ superlattice structure transition at 513 K, the material develops a separate $\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{2}$ superlattice structure at a lower temperature of 480 K. These results suggest that superconducting Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$ is phase separated with coexisting $\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{2}$ and $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ superlattice structures.

Abstract:The magnetic structure of CsCo 2 Se 2 was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction technique. An antiferromagnetic transition with the propagation vector（0,0,1） was observed at TN= 78 K. The Co magnetic moment 0.772（6） μB at 10 K pointing in the basal plane couples ferromagnetically in the plane, which stacks antiferromagnetically along the c direction. Tuning and suppressing the interplane antiferromagnetic interaction may be crucial to induce a superconducting state in the material.

Abstract:The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in helimagnets(CrAs,MnP)has attracted considerable interest in understanding the relationship between complex magnetism and unconventional superconductivity.However,the nature of the magnetism and magnetic interactions that drive the unusual double-helical magnetic order in these materials remains unclear.Here,we report neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in CrAs single crystals at ambient pressure.Our experiments reveal well defined spin wave excitations up to about 150 meV with a pseudogap below 7 meV,which can be effectively described by the Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor exchange interactions.Most surprisingly,the spin excitations are largely quenched above the Néel temperature,in contrast to cuprates and iron pnictides where the spectral weight is mostly preserved in the paramagnetic state.Our results suggest that the helimagnetic order is driven by strongly frustrated exchange interactions,and that CrAs is at the verge of itinerant and correlation-induced localized states,which is therefore highly pressure-tunable and favorable for superconductivity.

Abstract:The present chapter reviews current neutron and x-ray scattering techniques employed to elucidate the magnetic structures and spin dynamics of magnetic materials. Both techniques provide measurements as a function of the energy and the momentum transferred from the spin system to the probe particles, in terms of five-dimensional data sets as a function of various thermodynamic fields at the control of the experimenter. These scattering techniques yield fundamental information about the equal-time correlations such the magnetic configuration and symmetry, as well as the dynamics that determine the exchange interactions for prototypical systems that behave as linear, planar, or three-dimensional systems. Historically, neutron scattering has been the magnetic scattering technique of choice for such investigations, but the extraordinary advances in resonant x-ray scattering techniques have enable new types of magnetic scattering measurements. The type of information obtained with the two techniques is largely complementary and depends on the interests of the investigators. We discuss these possibilities and provide numerous examples of the techniques applied to different classes of magnetic systems.

Abstract:We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of superconducting Ba 0.67 K 0.33 Fe 2 As 2 ( T c = 38 K). In addition to confirming the resonance previously found in powder samples, we find that spin excitations in the normal state form longitudinally elongated ellipses along the Q AFM direction in momentum space, consistent with density functional theory predictions. On cooling below T c , while the resonance preserves its momentum anisotropy as expected, spin excitations at energies below the resonance become essentially isotropic in the in-plane momentum space and dramatically increase their correlation length. These results suggest that the superconducting gap structures in Ba 0.67 Ka 0.33 Fe 2 As 2 are more complicated than those suggested from angle resolved photoemission experiments.

Abstract:Neutron diffraction technology as an advanced material research technique has special advantages in studying magnetic materials compared to the conventional techniques such as X-ray diffraction（XRD）,scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,transmission electron microscopy（TEM）,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）.In this review,the applications of neutron diffraction technology on permanent magnetic materials were briefly reviewed:（1） the determination of the crystal structure and magnetic structure of the typical permanent magnet material,（2） in situ neutron diffraction study of the crystal structure evolution of the permanent magnets,and（3） phase transition in permanent magnetic materials.

Abstract:The magnetic structure of BaFe2As2 was determined from polycrystalline neutron diffraction measurements soon after the ThCr2Si2-type FeAs-based superconductors were discovered. Both the moment direction and the in-plane antiferromagnetic wavevector are along the longer a-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell. There is only one combined magnetostructural transition at similar to 140 K. However, a later single-crystal neutron diffraction work reported contradicting results. Here, we show neutron diffraction results from a single-crystal sample, grown by a self-flux method, that support the original polycrystalline work.

Abstract:Because of the neutron's special properties, neutron diffraction may be considered one of the most powerful techniques for structure determination of crystalline and related matter. Neutrons can be released from nuclear fission, from spallation processes, and also from low-energy nuclear reactions, and they can then be used in powder, time-of-flight, texture, single crystal, and other techniques, all of which are perfectly suited to clarify crystal and magnetic structures. With high neutron flux and sufficient brilliance, neutron diffraction also excels for diffuse scattering, for in situ and operando studies as well as for high-pressure experiments of today's materials. For these, the wave-like neutron's infinite advantage (isotope specific, magnetic) is crucial to answering important scientific questions, for example, on the structure and dynamics of light atoms in energy conversion and storage materials, magnetic matter, or protein structures. In this primer, we summarize the current state of neutron diffraction (and how it came to be), but also look at recent advances and new ideas, e.g., the design of new instruments, and what follows from that.

Abstract:We report polarized neutron scattering measurements of the low energy spin fluctuations of the iron-selenide superconductor Li0.8Fe0.2ODFeSe below and above its superconducting transition temperature T (c) = 41 K. Our experiments confirmed that the resonance mode near 21 meV is magnetic. Moreover, the spin excitations are essentially isotropic in spin space at 5 <= E <= 29 meV in the superconducting and normal states. Our results suggest that the resonance mode in iron-based superconductors becomes isotropic when the influence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic/nematic order is minimized, similar to those observed in cuprate superconductors.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic structure of hard magnetic alloy Mn1.074Al0.871C0.055 have been investigated by neutron diffraction technique. Mn1.074Al0.871C0.055 has body center tetragonal structure. The refinement of neutron diffraction data shows that 0.992 Mn and 0.008 C occupy (0,0,0) site and 0.082 Mn, 0.871 Al and 0.047 C occupy(1/2,1/2,1/2)site. The magnetic moments of manganese atoms in the different sites are alongc-axis pointing in opposite directions. In comparison of these results with that of binary alloy Mn1.09Al0.91, the significant improvement of magnetic and mechanical properties in ternary alloy Mn1.074Al0.871C0.055 can be explained.

Abstract:The Kondo lattice antiferromagnet YbNiSi3 was investigated by neutron scattering. The magnetic structure of YbNiSi3 was determined by neutron diffraction on a single-crystalline sample. Inelastic scattering experiments were also performed on a pulverized sample to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations. Two broad CEF excitations were observed, from which the CEF parameters were determined. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility chi and the magnetic specific heat Cmag were calculated using the determined CEF model, and compared with previous results.

Abstract:CeNiSn is a Kondo semimetal where a gap opens at low temperatures due to hybridization between 4 f and conduction electrons, but a full insulating state fails to develop. Upon the insertion of hydrogen, long-range magnetic order is induced. Here we report zero-field muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of polycrystalline samples of the deuterides CeNiSnDx (x=1.0, 1.8). The muon spin relaxation results confirm magnetic ordering in the whole sample of CeNiSnD below around 4.7 K, while inelastic neutron scattering reveals two well-defined crystalline-electric field (CEF) excitations at around 13 and 34 meV in CeNiSnD, and 5 and 27 meV for CeNiSnD1.8. These results suggest that hydrogenation leads to the localization of the Ce-4f electrons, giving rise to long-range magnetic order. We propose CEF level schemes for both systems, which predict a ground-state moment of 0.96 mu B/Ce within the ab plane for CeNiSnD1.8 and a saturated moment of 1.26 mu B/Ce along the easy c axis for CeNiSnD, that account for the observed magnetic properties.

Abstract:The crystallographic and magnetic structure of YFe10Mo2 were studied by using the powder neutron diffraction on a neutron triple-axis spectrometer at room temperature. The atom fractional occupancies of Mo and the atom magnetic moments of Fe were obtained by Rietveld analysis program FULLPROF. The magnetic structure of YFe10Mo2 shows an easy-axis anisotropy with the Fe magnetic moments being parallel to c axis. The intrinsic magnetic properties were also discussed.
