Abstract:In this work, crystal structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of Nd0.7Gd0.3Mn2Si2 alloy were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Nd0.7Gd0.3Mn2Si2 crystallizes in ThCr2Si2-typed structure with space group I4/mmm, in which the Nd, Gd, Mn and Si atoms occupy 2a (0, 0, 0), 2a (0, 0, 0), 4d (0, 1/2, 1/4) and 4e (0, 0, 0.38261) position, respectively. The Curie temperature (Tc) of Nd0.7Gd0.3Mn2Si2 alloy is 42 K, while the spin reorientation temperature (TSR) is 26 K and the Nel temperature (TN) is 410 K. The Tc and TN were determined using PPMS and DSC, respectively. The maximum value of the magnetic entropy change (-Smax) in the field change of 0-5 T is 11.862 J/kg K, while the value of relative cooling power (RCP) in Nd0.7Gd0.3Mn2Si2 alloy is 69.666 J/kg under the field change of 5 T.

Abstract:Ribbon-shaped amorphous alloys with nominal compositions Gd55Co35M10 (M = Mn, Fe and Ni) have been successfully prepared and their thermal, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties were investigated. A large reduced glass transition temperature (Tg/Tm) (>0.60) are found in Gd55Co35M10 amorphous alloys. The relatively high Tx1/Tm and small Tm confirm the excellent glass forming ability of these alloys. The Curie temperatures (TCs) of the amorphous alloys Gd55Co35M10 with M = Mn, Fe and Ni are 197, 268 and 192 K, respectively. Under an applied field change of 2 T, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM)max for Gd55Co35Mn10, Gd55Co35Fe10 and Gd55Co35Ni10 are 3.03, 1.72 and 3.37 J kg−1 K−1, while the values of refrigerant capacity (RC) are 224, 337 and 253 J kg−1, respectively. The large RC for Gd55Co35Fe10 is due to the broad (−ΔSM) peak (∼200 K), which is higher than that of the well-known crystalline Gd5Si2Ge2. Large RC and a considerable (−ΔSM) jointly make Gd55Co35M10 (M = Mn, Fe and Ni) amorphous alloys attractive candidates for magnetic refrigerant.

Abstract:The alloys with great magnetocaloric effect (MCE) are expected to be a good alternative for magnetic refrigerantion. In this work, ribbons were prepared by the melt-spinning method using Gd70Al20Fe10-x,Co-x (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10) alloys. Crystal structure, thermal stable, specific heat and magnetic properties of the ribbons were investigated by x-ray diffraction, Dynamic flow differential scanning calorimetry and Physical Properties Measurement System. Results show all samples are in amorphous state, and their onset crystallization temperatures (595-634 K) are higher than the magnetic transition temperature, which contributes to the stable of amorphous structures in practical application. In applied magnetic field of 5 T, the value of magnetic entropy change vertical bar Delta S-M vertical bar increases from 7.1 to 8.7 J . kg(-1). K-1 near the Curie temperature (151-114 K) of Gd70Al20Fe10-xCox alloys (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10) , respectively, which is ascribed to the exchange interaction between magnetic atoms Co and Fe; the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of Delta S-M and refrigeration capacity (RC) increase by 91% and 56% compared with those of pure Gd, respectively; the adiabatic temperature change are in the range of 3.4-3.7 K for the alloys. In addition, all alloys undergo a second order ferroparamagnetic phase transition, which is certified by the Arrott plots and universal curves.

Abstract:A series of the amorphous Gd75-55Al25-5Fe0–40 alloy ribbons were prepared by melt spinning. The structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of these alloys were investigated. The prepared samples have shown the characteristics of a second-order phase transition with zero hysteresis loss and the T c can be tuned by changing the Fe contents. For the different compositions, the magnetic entropy change (−ΔS m) for a field change of 0–5 T reached a maximum value of 7.14 J kg−1 K−1 in the Gd70Al20Fe10 alloy near its Curie temperature (T c) of 149 K. The non-linear composition dependence of (−ΔS m) could be caused by the competitions between Fe-Fe, Fe-Gd and Gd-Gd interactions. The refrigeration capacity (RC) values of these alloys are about 532–780 J/kg under a magnetic field change of 0–5 T. The results indicate that amorphous GdFeAl alloys can be considered as ideal candidates for a magnetic refrigerant in the temperature range of 104–222 K.

Abstract:The thermal, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of amorphous Fe80-xMxB10Zr9Cu1 (M = Ni or Ta; x = 0, 3, and 5) alloys were investigated. Both Ni and Ta additions reduce the crystallization temperature (T-x1). The Curie temperature (T-C) can be increased or decreased by the addition of Ni or Ta, respectively. The saturation magnetization (M-S) decreases from 126.5 Am-2 kg(-1) (without Ni or Ta) to 83.5 or 29.4 Am-2 kg(-1) for 5 at.% Ni or Ta addition, respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-Delta S-M)(max) of the amorphous alloys shows a decline trend with increasing Ni or Ta content. Under an applied magnetic field change of 5 T, the (-Delta S-M)(max) for Fe80-xNixB10Zr9Cu1 with x = 0, 3, and 5 are 3.28, 3.13, and 3.04 J kg(-1) K-1, respectively, while the (-Delta S-M)(max) for Fe80-xTaxB10Zr9Cu1 with x = 3 and 5 are 2.84 and 2.03 J kg(-1) K-1, respectively. The values of refrigeration capacity (RC) for the experimental alloys are higher than those of Fe80-xGdxCr8B12 (x = 5 and 10) alloys. In particular, the RC for the Fe80-xNixB10Zr9Cu1 (x = 3 and 5) and Fe77Ta3B10Zr9Cu1 alloys are comparable to that of the well-known MCM crystalline Gd5Si2Ge2. With large RC, negligible hysteresis and good thermal stability, these alloys can be used as the high temperature magnetic refrigerants working in the temperature range of 330-410 K. Abstract:The thermal stability, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Gd55Co35M10 (M = Si, Zr and Nb) melts-pun ribbons were studied. The relatively high reduced glass transition temperature (T-x1/T-m > 0.60) and low melting point (T-m) resulted in excellent glass forming ability (GFA). The Curie temperatures (T-c) of melt-spun amorphous ribbons Gd55Co35M10 for M = Si, Zr and Nb were 166, 148 and 173 K, respectively. For a magnetic field change of 2 T, the values of maximum magnetic entropy change (-Delta S-M)(max) for Gd55Co35M10, Gd55Co35Zr10 and Gd55Co35M10 were found to be 2.86, 4.28 and 4.05 J kg(-1)K(-1), while the refrigeration capacity (RC) values were 154, 274 and 174 J kg(-1), respectively. The RCFWHM values of amorphous alloys Gd55Co35M10 (M = Si, Zr and Nb) are comparable to or larger than that of LaFe11.6Si1.4 crystalline alloy. Large values of (-Delta S-M) and RC along with good thermal stability make Gd55Co35M10 (M = Si, Zr and Nb) amorphous alloys be potential materials for magnetic cooling operating in a wide temperature range from 150 to 175 K, e.g., as part of a gas liquefaction process.

Abstract:Gd-based amorphous alloys exhibit excellent magneto-caloric effect (MCE) at low temperature. For practical use of these amorphous alloys as refrigerants, it is vitally important to improve their Curie temperature (T c ). Unfortunately, the peak value of magnetic entropy change (−ΔS m peak ) of these metallic glasses usually decrease with the increasing T c . In the present work, we add small amount of Co for the substitution of Ni in the binary Gd–Ni amorphous alloys and improve the T c and −ΔS m peak simultaneously. The dependence of magnetic and magnetocaloric properties on the Co content of the Gd63Ni37-xCox amorphous alloys, and the mechanism involved, were investigated. The results provide a method to improve the T c without decreasing the −ΔS m peak of the Gd-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:We have employed Gd55Co30NixAl15-x (x = 10, 5 and 0) amorphous microwires as a model system to unravel the impact of multiple magnetic interactions on the magnetism and the magnetocaloric behavior in Gd-alloy microwire systems. Our study shows that in addition to the RKKY ferromagnetic (FM) interaction (Gd-Gd), antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions (Gd-Co, Gd-Ni) coexist and contribute to the magnetic and magnetocaloric response of the system. The dilution effect of Al element on the FM Gd-Gd interaction is responsible for the decrease of the Curie temperature (TC), whereas the increase of the saturation magnetization (MS) is originated from the reduced AFM Gd-Ni interaction. A thorough analysis of critical exponents suggests that the presence of the AFM interactions hinders the system to exhibit a long-range FM order below the TC. Adjusting these interactions is shown to preserve the large refrigerant capacity (RC) while tuning the TC over a wide temperature range, which is desirable for active magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:Crystallized Gd4Co3 alloy has shown promising magnetocaloric properties resulting from two successive magnetic-entropy changes of the hexagonal phase. In this work, magnetic (Gd4Co 3)100-xBx (x = 0, 5, 10 and 15) amorphous ribbons were prepared by melt spinning. The onset crystallization temperatures Tx for the alloys with x = 0, 5, 10 and 15 were found to be about 560, 565, 575 and 585 K, respectively. The Ho4Co 3-type hexagonal phase was obtained for crystallized ribbons after annealing. All the amorphous and crystalline alloys order ferromagnetically and undergo the second-order transition at their Curie temperatures. Under an applied field change from 0 to 5 T, the maximum value of (-ΔSM) for (Gd4Co3)100-xBx amorphous alloys increased from 6.7 to 7.8 J kg-1 K-1 with increasing B content. Large values of the refrigerant capacity (RC) were also obtained. For the crystallized alloys, the maximum value of (-ΔS M) decreased to 6.2-6.4 J kg-1 K-1. Large magnetic entropy change and RC value, negligible coercive force and hysteresis, as well as high stability enable the (Gd4Co3) 100-xBx amorphous alloys competitive candidates for the magnetic refrigeration materials working in the vicinity of 200 K. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Structure, Magnetic Properties and Magnetocaloric Effects of Fe 50 Mn 15− X Co X Ni 35 Alloys

Abstract:Fe50Mn15−x Co x Ni35 (x=0, 1, 3, 5, 7) alloys were prepared by arc melting under purified argon atmosphere. The ingots were homogenized at 930°C for 90 h followed by water quenching. The crystal structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects of the alloys were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and MPMS-7-type SQUID. The results show that all samples still maintained a single γ-(Fe, Ni)-type phase structure. With the increase of the content of Co, the Curie temperatures of these alloys increased and exhibited a second-order magnetic transition from ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) state near Curie temperature. The maximum magnetic entropy change and the relative cooling power of Fe50Mn10Co5Ni35 alloy was 2.55 J/kg·K and 181 J/kg, respectively, for an external field change of 5 T. Compared with rare earth metal Gd, Fe50Mn15−x Co x Ni35 series of alloys have obvious advantage in resource price; their Curie temperatures can be tuned to near room temperature, maintain a relatively large magnetic entropy change at the same time and they are a type of potential magnetic refrigeration materials near room temperature.

Abstract:The multiphase GdNi x Al 2− x (0.35 ≤ x ≤ 0.70) compounds were synthesized, and the relationship between the composition and magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the as-cast alloys was subsequently established in this work. For the alloys with composition close to the GdNiAl-end, large magnetic entropy changes occur. Decreasing ratio of Ni to Al induces considerable refrigerant capacity due to the large broadening of temperature range of the phase transitions. In particular, a plateau-shaped magnetocaloric feature was found in the fully crystalline GdNi 0.40 Al 1.60 alloy composed of three ferromagnetic phases. The maximum magnetic entropy change and refrigerant capacity of the as-cast GdNi 0.40 Al 1.60 alloy are 8.8 J/kg K and 567 J/kg, respectively, for magnetic field change of 50 kOe. The good “table-like” magnetocaloric response makes it a promising refrigerant candidate for Ericsson cycle-based magnetic refrigeration at low temperatures. Furthermore, this type of material promises to provide a cost-effective strategy for the search of efficient magnetic refrigerants with table-like magnetocaloric feature, beneficial for Ericsson cycle.
Enhanced Magnetocaloric Performance in Nanocrystalline/amorphous Gd3Ni/Gd65Ni35 Composite Microwires

Abstract:A novel class of nanocrystalline/amorphous Gd3Ni/Gd65Ni35 composite microwires were created directly from melt-extraction through controlled solidification. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed the formation of a biphase nanocrystalline/amorphous structure in these wires. Magnetic and magnetocaloric experiments indicate a large magnetic entropy change (-ΔSM ~9.64 J/kg K), large refrigerant capacity (RC ~742.1 J/kg), and large maximum adiabatic temperature change (ΔTadmax~5 K) around the Curie temperature of ~120 K for a field change of 5 T. These values are ~1.5 times larger relative to its bulk counterpart and are superior to other candidate materials being considered for active magnetic refrigeration in the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

Abstract:The microstructure, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the Gd3NixAl2_x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys were systematically studied. Three phases of Gd3Al2, GdAl and Gd2Al were observed in the Gd3Al2 alloy. The lamellar GdAl and Gd2Al phases were dispersed in the main phase of Gd3Al2 alloy, which was not conducive to the plasticity of the alloy. It was demonstrated that the introduction of a small amount of Ni changed the phase composition. The Gd3NixAl2_x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys underwent second-order magnetic phase transition around their Curie temperatures (TC) of 275 K, 274.5 K, 271 K and 269.5 K, respectively. The maximum isothermal magnetic entropy changes (_Delta SM)max were 2.95 J kg- 1 K-1, 2.45 J kg- 1 K-1, 2.02 J kg- 1 K-1 and 1.42 J kg- 1 K-1 under the magnetic field change of 0-2 T. The maximum adiabatic temperature changes (Delta Tad)max were 2.74 K, 2.18 K, 1.56 K and 1.14 K for Gd3NixAl2_x alloys with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. Compared with pure Gd, the Gd3NixAl2_x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys exhibited weaker comprehensive mag-netocaloric effect due to the reduction of magnetization caused by the addition of a large amount of Al. However, the cheaper raw material price and relatively large magnetocaloric effect make the Gd3NixAl2_x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys be the potential magnetic refrigerants at near room temperature.

Abstract:The amorphous alloys (Gd4Co3)1−xSix (x=0, 0.05, and 0.10) were prepared by melt spinning. The Curie temperature can be tuned from 213 to 198K with increasing Si content, while the maximum value of magnetic entropy change for a magnetic field change of 0–5T can reach 7.3, 7.2 and 6.4Jkg−1K−1 for x=0, 0.05 and 0.10 respectively. Large values of the refrigerant capacity are obtained in these alloys. The saturation magnetization at 5K equals 26.5μB, 24.2μB and 22.4μB per (Gd4Co3)1−xSix formula with x=0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. All samples undergo a second order ferri–paramagnetic phase transition. The critical behavior around the transition temperature is investigated by means of the modified Arrott plots technique, the Kouvel–Fisher method and the Widom scaling relation. The results indicate that for x=0 and 0.05, the critical exponents are close to those of the 3D Ising model, while the critical exponents for x=0.1 are between those of the 3D Ising model and mean-field model.

Abstract:To understand the structure and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the crystallized Gd-Co-Al bulk metallic glasses, investigations were performed on the unknown phase of the crystallization product. As a result, the new ternary phases with composition of Gd57.5Co20Al22.5 have been found in the Gd-Co-Al alloy system. The as-cast alloy adopts the orthorhombic crystal system with the space group of Pbam. The alloy preserves the single phase structure during annealing but experiences structural phase transition to crystallize in a different structure. The as-cast alloy orders antiferromagnetically at 59 K and continuous field-induced metamagnetic transition can be observed. The annealed one orders ferromagnetically at 101 K. The magnetization measurements suggest that the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions coexist in both the as-cast and the annealed samples and they have complex magnetic structure. MCE of the two samples are far lower than that of the Gd-Co-Al bulk metallic glasses.

Abstract:The Gd55Fe30P15 alloy ribbons were prepared by melt-spinning technique.By means of X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurement,the phase structure,Curie temperature and magnetocaloric effect of the alloys were investigated.The results showed that the Gd55Fe30P15 ribbon is completely amorphous and the Curie temperature TC of the amorphous phase is 240K.The magnetic phase transition occurring near TC is a second order transformation.The maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change under 5T magnetic field is 2.73 J/kg·K.A platform of magnetic entropy changes appears in a wide temperature range from 185 K to 295 K for lower fields and from 185 K to 270 K for higher fields,respectively.The results indicated that this material can meet requirements of Ericsson-type refrigerator.

Abstract:The new magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology, which uses the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of materials for refrigeration, has shown apparent advantages over the compression refrigeration of freon and other gases. Therefore, how to obtain materials with excellent magnetic entropy change near room temperature is of great significance for the realization of MR. In order to achieve high Tc of a Gd-based amorphous alloy, Gd45Co50Al5 amorphous alloy with good room temperature MCE was selected, and a series of Gd45Co50−xFexAl5 (x = 2, 5, 10) amorphous alloys were prepared by adding Fe instead of Co. In this paper, the effect of Fe addition on the Curie temperature, and the magnetic entropy change in the alloys, were studied thoroughly. The results show that the Curie temperature is increased to 281 K by adding 5% Fe elements, which is mainly related to the enhanced 3d-3d interaction of transition elements caused by Fe addition, and the maximum value of magnetic entropy change is 3.24 J/(kg·K) under a field of 5 T. The results are expected to provide guidance for further improving the room temperature MCE of Gd-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the Gd3NixAl2‒x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys were systematically studied. Three phases of Gd3Al2, GdAl and Gd2Al were observed in the Gd3Al2 alloy. The lamellar GdAl and Gd2Al phases were dispersed in the main phase of Gd3Al2 alloy, which was not conducive to the plasticity of the alloy. It was demonstrated that the introduction of a small amount of Ni changed the phase composition. The Gd3NixAl2‒x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys underwent second-order magnetic phase transition around their Curie temperatures (TC) of 275 K, 274.5 K, 271 K and 269.5 K, respectively. The maximum isothermal magnetic entropy changes (‒ΔSM)max were 2.95 J kg−1 K−1, 2.45 J kg−1 K−1, 2.02 J kg−1 K−1 and 1.42 J kg−1 K−1 under the magnetic field change of 0–2 T. The maximum adiabatic temperature changes (ΔTad)max were 2.74 K, 2.18 K, 1.56 K and 1.14 K for Gd3NixAl2‒x alloys with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. Compared with pure Gd, the Gd3NixAl2‒x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys exhibited weaker comprehensive magnetocaloric effect due to the reduction of magnetization caused by the addition of a large amount of Al. However, the cheaper raw material price and relatively large magnetocaloric effect make the Gd3NixAl2‒x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys be the potential magnetic refrigerants at near room temperature.

Abstract:The structure and magnetocaloric effect of Gd5Si1.975Ge1.975T0.05 (T=Ni, Mn, Cr, Co and Fe) alloys were studied. XRD results show that when the atomic number of T element is even, the Gd5Si1.975Ge1.975T0.05 (T=Ni,Fe,Cr)alloys have a single Gd5Si2Ge2 phase with monoclinic crystalline and hold the giant magnetocaloric effect, but in the case of odd atomic number in T element, the Gd5Si1.975Ge1.975T0.05 (T = Mn, Co)alloys have mixed phases with monoclinic and orthorhombic crystalline and a second order transition was found. In addition, the magnetic refrigeration capacity (MRC) reached to 112 J/kg in Gd5Si1.975Ge1.975Cr0.05 alloys, which increases by 50% compared with Gd5Si2Ge2 alloy.

Abstract:Gd99.75Fe0.25 alloy prepared by arc melting under purified argon atmosphere and homogenization annealing treatment at 1123 K for 168 h was investigated by X-ray diffraction, physical property measurement system, microhardness tester and electrochemical workstation. The results show that the Gd99.75Fe0.25 alloy still retains hexagonal crystal structure of pure Gd. The Curie temperature of Gd99.75Fe0.25 alloy is 294 K, and the alloy exhibits a second-order magnetic transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. The maximum magnetic entropy changes of Gd99.75Fe0.25 alloy under magnetic field changes of 0 similar to 2 T and 0 similar to 5 T are 4.99 J-kg(-1).K-1 and 9.37 J-kg(-1).K-1, respectively, which are larger than that of pure Gd. The micro-hardness (HV0 2) of Gd99.75Fe0.25 alloy is 590 MPa, which is equivalent to that of pure Gd. But the corrosion resistance is improved by doping a small amount of Fe. Large magnetocaloric effect and good application features make the Gd99 75Fe0.25 alloy as a potential magnetic refrigerant at room temperature.
