Abstract:In this paper we study pluricanonical maps of minimal projective 3-folds of general type with geometric genus 1, 2 and 3. We go in the direction pioneered by Enriques and Bombieri, and other authors, pinning down, for low projective genus, a finite list of exceptions to the birationality of some pluricanonical map. In particular, apart from a finite list of weighted baskets, we prove the birationality of φ_16, φ_6 and φ_5 respectively.

Abstract:Nonsingular projective 3-folds $V$ of general type can be naturally classified into 18 families according to the pluricanonical section index${\it\delta}(V):=\text{min}\{m\mid P_{m}\geqslant 2\}$ since $1\leqslant {\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 18$ due to our previous series (I, II). Based on our further classification to 3-folds with ${\it\delta}(V)\geqslant 13$ and an intensive geometrical investigation to those with ${\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 12$, we prove that $\text{Vol}(V)\geqslant \frac{1}{1680}$ and that the pluricanonical map ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ is birational for all $m\geqslant 61$, which greatly improves known results. An optimal birationality of ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ for the case ${\it\delta}(V)=2$ is obtained. As an effective application, we study projective 4-folds of general type with $p_{g}\geqslant 2$ in the last section.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We shall give a detailed classification up to baskets of singularities on a minimal model of $V$. We show that the $m$-canonical map of $V$ is birational for all $m\geq 73$ and that the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/2660}$. When $\chi(\mathcal{O}_V)\leq 1$, our result is $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/420}$, which is optimal. Other effective results are also included in the paper.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a minimal projective 3-fold of general type. The pluricanonical section index $\delta(X)$ is defined to be the minimal integer $m$ so that $P_{m}(X)\geq 2$. According to Chen-Chen, one has either $1\leq \delta(X)\leq 15$ or $\delta(X)=18$. This note aims to intensively study those with maximal such index. A direct corollary is that the $57$th canonical map of every minimal 3-fold of general type is stably birational.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We prove $P_{12}(V)>0$ and $P_{24}(V)>1$ (which answers an open problem of J. Kollar and S. Mori). We also prove that the canonical volume has an universal lower bound $\text{Vol}(V) \geq 1/2660$ and that the pluri-canonical map $\Phi_m$ is birational onto its image for all $m\geq 77$. As an application of our method, we prove Fletcher's conjecture on weighted hyper-surface 3-folds with terminal quotient singularities. Another featured result is the optimal lower bound $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/420}$ among all those 3-folds $V$ with $\chi({\mathcal O}_V)\leq 1$.

Abstract:There are many examples of 3-folds of general type with $\chi(\mathcal {O})=1$ found by Iano-Fletcher and Reid about twenty years ago. Iano-Fletcher has ever proved $P_{12}(X)\ge 1$ and $P_{24}(X)\ge 2$ for all minimal 3-folds $X$ of general type with $\chi(\mathcal {O}_X)=1$. In this paper, we improve on Fletcher's method. Our main result is that $\phi_m$ is birational onto its image for all $m\ge 54$. To prove this we establish a general theory on birationality for general 3-folds which improve known results. Also we will show $P_m\geq 1$ for all $m\geq 14$ and $P_{18}\geq 3$.

Abstract: We prove the following results: (1) for any nonsingular projective $3$-folds $X$ of general type with $\chi(\mathcal{O}_X)\neq 2,3$, the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(X)$ has the optimal lower bound $\frac{1}{420}$; (2) for nonsingular projective $3$-folds (resp. $4$-folds) $X$ of general type with $h^{2, 0}(X)\geq 108\cdot 42^3+4$ (resp. with sufficiently large $h^{2, 0}(X)$), the $3$-canonical map (resp. $5$-canonical map) is stably birational; (3) for any nonsingular projective $n$-fold $X$ of general type with $q(X)>n\geq 4$, the canonical stability index $r_s(X)$ is upper bounded by the $(n-1)$-th canonical stability index $r_{n-1}$.

Abstract:We work over the complex number field C. In this paper, we study multi-canonical systems |mKV | on complex projective 3-folds V of general type. On a smooth complex complete curve C of genus g(C) ≥ 2, it is well known that the 3-canonical map φ3 := Φ|3KC | is always an embedding. On a smooth minimal projective surface S of general type, Bombieri [2] proved that the m-canonical map is a birational morphism for all m ≥ 5. The work of Tsuji [31], Hacon–McKernan [13] and Takayama [28] says that there exists a universal constant r3 such that the r3-canonical map Φr3 is birational for all smooth projective 3-folds of general type. We note that Tsuji [31] announced a very large r3. Recently Chen and the first author [5] have given an explicit r3 (≤77). Under extra assumptions there have been already the following optimal results about r3 for minimal projective 3-folds X of general type with Q-factorial terminal singularities:

Abstract:We study the canonical stability of a smooth projective 3-fold $V$ of general type. We prove that (1) $|5K_V|$ gives a birational map onto its image provided the geometric genus $p_g\geq 4$; (2) $|6K_V|$ gives a birational map provided $p_g=3$. Known examples show that both are optimal. This fact can be viewed as parallel to surface case, though people know very little on 3-folds of general type with $p_g\leq 1$.

Abstract:We prove that the canonical model of a $3$-fold of general type with geometric genus $2$ and with minimal canonical volume $\frac{1}{3}$ must be a hypersurface of degree $16$ in $\mathbb{P}(1,1,2,3,8)$, which gives an explicit description of its canonical ring. This implies that the coarse moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{\frac{1}{3}, 2}$, parametrizing all canonical $3$-folds with canonical volume $\frac{1}{3}$ and geometric genus $2$, is an irreducible variety of dimension $189$. Parallel studies show that $\mathcal{M}_{1, 3}$ is irreducible as well and is of dimension $236$, and that $\mathcal{M}_{2, 4}$ is irreducible and is of dimension $270$. As being conceived, every member in these 3 families is simply connected. Additionally, our method yields the expected Noether inequality $\textrm{Vol}>\frac{4}{3}p_g-\frac{10}{3}$ for $3$-folds of general type with $p_g=5$.

Abstract:If $X$ is a smooth complex projective 3-fold with ample canonical divisor $K$, then the inequality $K^3\ge {2/3}(2p_g-7)$ holds, where $p_g$ denotes the geometric genus. This inequality is nearly sharp. We also give similar, but more complicated, inequalities for general minimal 3-folds of general type. (A noether type of inequality lies, by all means, on the other side of the Miyaoka-Yau inequality from the geographical point of view.)

Abstract:We answer an open problem raised by Chen and Zhang in 2008 and prove that, for any minimal projective 3-fold $X$ of general type with the geometric genus $\geq 5$, $X$ is birationally fibred by a pencil of $(1,2)$-surfaces (i.e. $c_1^2=1$, $p_g=2$) if and only if the $4$-canonical map $\varphi_{4,X}$ is non-birational. The statement does not hold for those with the geometric genus $\leq 4$ according to our examples.

Abstract:We answer an open problem of the first author and Zhang (see Open Problem 6.4 (3) in Math. Abstract:In this paper, we completely classify the canonical threefolds on the Noether line with geometric genus $p_g \ge 11$ by studying their moduli spaces. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, estimate the number of its irreducible components and prove the dimension formula. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components grows linearly with the geometric genus, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate the canonical threefolds on the Noether line to the simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces by proving a conjecture stated by two of the authors in [CP].
